1. The Princess Bride (1987)

PG | 98 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family

78 Metascore

A bedridden boy's grandfather reads him the story of a farmboy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love.

Director: Rob Reiner | Stars: Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Robin Wright, Chris Sarandon

Votes: 450,776 | Gross: $30.86M

Due to popular demand and because this movie just belongs here, the Princess Bride had to make this list.

This masterpiece shows us, how to toy with the expectations of your audience. To quote the movie itself: "Not just your basic, average, everyday, ordinary, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum fairy tale."

2. Stardust (2007)

PG-13 | 127 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

66 Metascore

In a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he'll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm.

Director: Matthew Vaughn | Stars: Charlie Cox, Claire Danes, Sienna Miller, Ian McKellen

Votes: 285,142 | Gross: $38.63M

If you liked the Princess Bride, you may like this one, too.

3. Labyrinth (1986)

PG | 101 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

50 Metascore

Sixteen-year-old Sarah must solve a labyrinth to rescue her baby brother when he is taken by the Goblin King.

Director: Jim Henson | Stars: David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly, Toby Froud, Shelley Thompson

Votes: 149,505 | Gross: $12.73M

A girl has to travel into a mystical world and find her way through a huge labyrinth to save her sibling.

The labyrinth is inhabited by strange creatures and confronts the heroine with unique riddles and other challenges. You may want to steal one of two ideas for your dungeons.

4. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

51 Metascore

Robin Hood decides to fight back as an outlaw when faced with the tyranny of the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Director: Kevin Reynolds | Stars: Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Christian Slater

Votes: 208,301 | Gross: $165.50M

A bunch of heroes fights an evil opressor. It's a very simple, very old story template, but it survived because it has a timeless appeal. This movie may have aged a bit here and there, but it is a quite vital version of the story.

Probably the best thing about this movie is the villain, played by the incredible Alan Rickman. Hear how he rants and you'll want to steal this character for one of your adventures.

5. The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)

PG | 102 min | Action, Adventure, Romance

97 Metascore

When Prince John and the Norman Lords begin oppressing the Saxon masses in King Richard's absence in 1190s England, a Saxon lord fights back as the outlaw leader of a resistance movement.

Directors: Michael Curtiz, William Keighley | Stars: Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains

Votes: 54,470 | Gross: $3.98M

Another, older take of the Robin Hood theme, featureing the immortal Errol Flynn.

Note that this movie stems from another age, where heroes were noble, villains had class, maidens were fair and everything was bright and colorful. If you look for the opposite of a dark, gritty approach, you may find this movie inspirational.

6. Prince Valiant (1954)

Approved | 100 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

A young Viking prince strives to become a knight in King Arthur's Court and restore his exiled father to his rightful throne.

Director: Henry Hathaway | Stars: James Mason, Janet Leigh, Robert Wagner, Debra Paget

Votes: 2,948

Note that this is the 1954 version, we stay with the classics here for a bit (avoid the 90'ties abomination of a movie at all costs).

Prince Valiant takes place in age of King Arthur and is based on an epic comic series, which is actually a must read for game masters. This movie, loaded with gallant knights, fair maidens and epic duels merely shows the tip of the mountain of potential inspiration the comics provide, but it is definitly worth a look.

7. The Court Jester (1955)

Approved | 101 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family

A hapless carnival performer masquerades as the court jester as part of a plot against an evil ruler who has overthrown the rightful King.

Directors: Melvin Frank, Norman Panama | Stars: Danny Kaye, Glynis Johns, Basil Rathbone, Angela Lansbury

Votes: 13,941 | Gross: $0.02M

This comedy belongs right here. It bears similarities and intersections with the Robin hood story template, but fortunately goes its own path.

The stroy about a hero infiltrating the villains castle by taking a fake identity is rich with intrigues and situational comedy. So how about an adventure, where your heroes go undercover?

8. Yojimbo (1961)

Not Rated | 110 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

93 Metascore

A crafty ronin comes to a town divided by two criminal gangs and decides to play them against each other to free the town.

Director: Akira Kurosawa | Stars: Toshirô Mifune, Eijirô Tôno, Tatsuya Nakadai, Yôko Tsukasa

Votes: 131,288

This samurai/ronin story by Akira Kurosawa was the inspiration for "a fistful of dollars". A village suffers from the conflict between two rivaling bands of scoundrels until a mysterious stranger arrives and changes the status quo, playing the two parties against each other.

As you may have noticed, this story template works pretty well in any setting, feudal japan, wild west... set it wherever you want.

9. Sanjuro (1962)

Not Rated | 96 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

A crafty samurai helps a young man and his fellow clansmen trying to save his uncle, who has been framed and imprisoned by a corrupt superintendent.

Director: Akira Kurosawa | Stars: Toshirô Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Keiju Kobayashi, Yûnosuke Itô

Votes: 41,099

The lone swordsman from Yojimbo returns. This time he accidently stumbles into the plot of a few, righteous but ... well... simple men, who want to stop a corrupt official. He sides with them, but the battle cannot be taken out in the open and requires not only a quick blade, but also a keen mind.

So if you like stories filled with intrigues and treachery, this one may provide some ideas for your next adventure. Fortunately this is another example of a time- and placeless story template.

10. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)

PG | 121 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

90 Metascore

Luke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader.

Director: George Lucas | Stars: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness

Votes: 1,448,910 | Gross: $322.74M

The original triology of Star Wars movies is so iconic and essential, that I have no other choice but including them here.

What to take away from part 1 (episode IV)?

The Jedi are only hinted at, that makes them very mysterious and interesting. I think it shows very well how to handle supernatural things like these: Leave room for imagination!

Another thing we can learn from Star Wars is, that you can easily switch the setting of a plot template by substituting elements. Think of a simple, medival adventure story with knights and dragons. Now replace the white knights with jedi, the dark knight with Darth Vader, the dragon/the villains lair with the death star... as you can see, there's rarely something locked in time and place.

11. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

PG | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

82 Metascore

After the Rebel Alliance are overpowered by the Empire, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett.

Director: Irvin Kershner | Stars: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams

Votes: 1,378,987 | Gross: $290.48M

What to take away from part 2 (episode V)?

Two words Plot twist!

The Empire Strikes Back features the most archetypical kind of plot twist one can come up with. I won't spoil it here, but it is so famous you probably know it yet. If you remember the impact it had on you, when you saw it for the first time, you'll know how lasting their impression is and how well a good plot twist can enrichen a story. Thus: have plot twists in your adventures!

12. Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)

PG | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

58 Metascore

After rescuing Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, the Rebel Alliance attempt to destroy the second Death Star, while Luke struggles to help Darth Vader back from the dark side.

Director: Richard Marquand | Stars: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams

Votes: 1,120,871 | Gross: $309.13M

What to take away from part 3 (episode VI)?

Obviously not the greatly critizised Ewoks. The best thing about Return of the Jedi is the "parallel showdown". The finale takes place in three different locations at the same time and cuts between them.

You could try to adapt cuts between different action scenes to your adventures. Another thing is, that you could offer your players various options where they want to be during the showdown and which kind of part they want to play in it.

13. The Mask of Zorro (1998)

PG-13 | 136 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

62 Metascore

A young thief seeking revenge for his brother's death is trained by the once-great, aging Zorro, who is pursuing his own vengeance.

Director: Martin Campbell | Stars: Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, José María de Tavira

Votes: 197,683 | Gross: $94.10M

A tongue in cheek adaption of Zorro, whom you are hopefully familiar with. What makes this story even more interesting, is, that the young hero isn't actually the first Zorro, but is trained by the old Zorro to become his successor. How about an adventure, where your player characters become students of a famous hero? Or what if they have to help an aged and thus not 100% fit hero to fullfill his destiny?

14. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

63 Metascore

Blacksmith Will Turner teams up with eccentric pirate "Captain" Jack Sparrow to save his love, the governor's daughter, from Jack's former pirate allies, who are now undead.

Director: Gore Verbinski | Stars: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley

Votes: 1,209,737 | Gross: $305.41M

There are so many good things to steal... sorry, I meant to plunder about this movie, that I don't know where to start. It is an amazingly entertaining revival of the pirate theme.

One thing standing out, is the way one of the main characters, Captain Jack Sparrow is introduced to us. In about 2 jawdropping minutes we learn more about him than we are told about many characters in entire movies. If you have an important NPC to introduce, you may want to show how they are by example not by telling. This is the lesson to learn here. Even better if you can help your players to introduce their new characters this way.

15. National Treasure (2004)

PG | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Mystery

40 Metascore

A historian races to find the legendary Templar Treasure before a team of mercenaries.

Director: Jon Turteltaub | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Sean Bean

Votes: 354,976 | Gross: $173.01M

A very american, Indiana Jones type of treasure hunt.

16. Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)

102 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

72 Metascore

A dashing thief, his gang of desperadoes and an intrepid cop struggle to free a princess from an evil count, and learn the secret of a treasure that she holds part of the key to.

Director: Hayao Miyazaki | Stars: Yasuo Yamada, Eiko Masuyama, Kiyoshi Kobayashi, Makio Inoue

Votes: 33,543

This is by far the best Lupin movie (don't worry you can enjoy it without knowing the other ones), and this is not surprising, since it was directed by no other than Hayao Miyazaki.

Action, fun, adventure, heroes, villains, damsels, mysteries and dungeons. This movie has it all.

You may stumble across a few things that will fit into your next rpg adventure

17. Sherlock Holmes (2009)

PG-13 | 128 min | Action, Adventure, Mystery

57 Metascore

Detective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.

Director: Guy Ritchie | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong

Votes: 670,675 | Gross: $209.03M

Solving crimes in historical setting can be pretty exciting and few movies have done it better than this.

18. Victor and the Secret of Crocodile Mansion (2012)

PG | 96 min | Adventure, Family, Mystery

When Victor and his family move into his grand-uncle's mysterious - and seemingly haunted - mansion, the young boy detective makes it his mission to solve the case of a girl who died there forty years earlier.

Directors: Cyrill Boss, Philipp Stennert | Stars: Kristo Ferkic, Joanna Ferkic, Vijessna Ferkic, Christoph Maria Herbst

Votes: 559

This is actually a childrens movie, but a good one. It's a mystery thriller where the young main character has to follow riddles and leads to uncover a 40 year old mystery.

19. The Changeling (1980)

R | 107 min | Horror, Mystery

70 Metascore

After the death of his wife and daughter in a car crash, a music professor staying at a long-vacant Seattle mansion is dragged into a decades-old mystery by an inexplicable presence in the mansion's attic.

Director: Peter Medak | Stars: George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere, Melvyn Douglas, Jean Marsh

Votes: 39,971

A haunted house horror movie and probably one of the finest.

As a gamemaster you may want to replicate the way this movie toys with the viewers imagination. The best example for that, is the scene with the ball... You'll know which one I mean.

20. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

R | 95 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

72 Metascore

Five college friends head out to a remote cabin for a getaway, but things don't go as planned when they start getting killed. They soon discover that there is more to the cabin than it seems.

Director: Drew Goddard | Stars: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz

Votes: 450,452 | Gross: $42.07M

You have probably seen this type of movie before: A bunch of college kids sets out for a sceluded place to enjoy themselves, drinking, having sex, taking drugs... and then all of a sudden a mysterious monster/killer/etc.. starts to hunt and kill them. The kids make stupid decisions and it becomes pretty predictiable who will die next... it's an often implausible cliche story that has been done over and over again.

Enter the grandmaster of story writing, Joss Whedon. In "The Cabin in the Woods" he takes the old template and constructs something new from it, by adding a completely new point of view, that actually explains a lot...

21. Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)

R | 89 min | Comedy, Horror

65 Metascore

Affable hillbillies Tucker and Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are mistaken for murderers by a group of preppy college students.

Director: Eli Craig | Stars: Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk, Katrina Bowden, Jesse Moss

Votes: 193,440 | Gross: $0.22M

Two totally friendly, helpful but redneck looking guys are mistaken for insane killers by a bunch of college kids. Accidents happen, hilarity ensues.

Being an incredibly funny movie aside, this lesson on the risks of predjudices also provides a good plot idea. What if the player characters are mistaken for killers? What if things happen that make things look not in their favor?

22. The Descent (2005)

R | 99 min | Adventure, Horror, Thriller

71 Metascore

A caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.

Director: Neil Marshall | Stars: Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid, Saskia Mulder

Votes: 246,786 | Gross: $26.02M

This is a really, really creepy horror movie, that makes formidable use of the setting it takes place in: Lightless, claustrophobical caves.

If your next dungeon happens to be a natural cave and you want to replicate that atmosphere beyond an artificial theme park experience, watch this and take notes. THIS is how a creepy cave feels.

By the way: Try the european cut, avoid the altered US version.

23. Tremors (1990)

PG-13 | 96 min | Comedy, Horror

65 Metascore

Natives of a small isolated town defend themselves against strange underground creatures which are killing them one by one.

Director: Ron Underwood | Stars: Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross

Votes: 150,417 | Gross: $16.67M

Monster(s) attack little town. It is a basic template. It has been done often with giant spiders or ants, zombies and this time with giant worms. If you are looking for a short, simple setup, why not something like this?

24. Aliens (1986)

R | 137 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

84 Metascore

Decades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring.

Director: James Cameron | Stars: Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Carrie Henn, Paul Reiser

Votes: 762,620 | Gross: $85.16M

Just see it if you haven't yet. If this doesn't inspire the gamemaster you, I don't know what will.

It's not only about heroes versus monsters, it's about the horror, the atmosphere and the pressure of it all and it has rarely, if ever, been done better than this.

25. The Ghost and the Darkness (1996)

R | 110 min | Adventure, Drama, Thriller

46 Metascore

A bridge engineer and an experienced old hunter begin a hunt for two lions after they start attacking local construction workers.

Director: Stephen Hopkins | Stars: Michael Douglas, Val Kilmer, Tom Wilkinson, John Kani

Votes: 65,946 | Gross: $38.62M

I am against vilifying animals. Wolves, sharks and in this case lions have often been depicted as something evil, which they are not.

Anyway, this movie gives you a great idea of how to surround monsters with an appropreate shroud of dread and mystery. The plot is easily adapted to any thinkable setting. Just replace the lions with supernatural monsters please.

26. The Last of the Mohicans (1992)

R | 112 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

76 Metascore

Three trappers protect the daughters of a British Colonel in the midst of the French and Indian War.

Director: Michael Mann | Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Russell Means, Eric Schweig

Votes: 187,541 | Gross: $75.51M

This is how to set an adventure in the wilderness. If this doesn't inspire you, you may at least want to use the soundtrack for your gaming sessions.

27. 13 Assassins (2010)

R | 141 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

84 Metascore

A group of assassins come together for a suicide mission to kill an evil lord.

Director: Takashi Miike | Stars: Koji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada, Yûsuke Iseya, Ikki Sawamura

Votes: 68,579 | Gross: $0.80M

If you like siege or last stand type of stories, you may be interested in watching this one. 13 assassins are tasked to kill a sadistic feudal lord in a suicide mission.

You may want to adapt the story template for your purposes.

28. We're No Angels (1955)

Not Rated | 106 min | Comedy, Crime, Romance

51 Metascore

Three Devil's Island escapees hide out in the house of a kindly merchant and repay his kindness by helping him and his family out of several crises.

Director: Michael Curtiz | Stars: Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, Aldo Ray, Joan Bennett

Votes: 10,773

The plot of this story will probably not be 1:1 translateable into an adventure in your campaign, but how about having your player characters try to keep a low profile while helping out others? It may be a funny time for your players when they try to hide their skills from other people around them.

29. Dave (1993)

PG-13 | 110 min | Comedy, Romance

76 Metascore

An uncanny Presidential lookalike named Dave is recruited by the Secret Service to become a momentary stand-in for the President of the United States.

Director: Ivan Reitman | Stars: Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Frank Langella, Kevin Dunn

Votes: 56,817 | Gross: $63.27M

This doesn't look like a gamer movie, does it? But how about this: What if one of your player characters looks like someone else? Someone important, and is hired (along with the rest of the party) to impersonate that person? Or what if the entire group is mistaken for another one? What if the players have to play along with the sharade to achieve their mission?

30. Murder on the Orient Express (1974)

PG | 128 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

63 Metascore

In December 1935, when his transcontinental luxury train is stranded by deep snow, detective Hercule Poirot is called on to solve a murder that occurred in his car the night before, with a multitude of suspects.

Director: Sidney Lumet | Stars: Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery

Votes: 69,103 | Gross: $0.07M

A classical "Who done it?". You may want to try this type of adventure on your players.
