- DirectorJon FavreauStarsJon FavreauRobert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonA head chef quits his restaurant job and buys a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family.Chef is a movie about so much more than just a man and his food truck. It's a wonderfully written story about family and friendships, with one of the years best casts.
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsJohn Lloyd YoungErich BergenMichael LomendaThe story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic 1960s rock group The Four Seasons. While it isn't quite as exciting as the stage play, the strong performances, exquisite cinematography, and great music make this one of the years most enjoyable films.
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsRalph FiennesF. Murray AbrahamMathieu AmalricA writer encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge.Wes Anderson does it again. TGBH is probably the best film Anderson has ever made. His unconventional methods of filmmaking combined with the great performances he always seems to get out of his casts make him one of the most interesting and exciting filmmakers today.
- DirectorSeth MacFarlaneStarsSeth MacFarlaneCharlize TheronLiam NeesonAs a cowardly farmer begins to fall for the mysterious new woman in town, he must put his newly found courage to the test when her husband, a notorious gun-slinger, announces his arrival.I'm not ashamed to be a Seth MacFarlane fan. If you love him, you'll agree with me that this is the funniest movie of the year so far. If you hate him, you probably think this movie sucks. Love him or hate him, it's worth a view for the hilarious performances from Neil Patrick Harris and Liam Neeson.
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsGary OldmanKeri RussellAndy SerkisThe fragile peace between apes and humans is threatened as mistrust and betrayal threaten to plunge both tribes into a war for dominance over the Earth.Even better than the 2011 Apes installment. Breathtaking special effects and one of the most memorable and despicable villains of the past few years make this the best of all this year's summer blockbusters.
- DirectorLuc BessonStarsScarlett JohanssonMorgan FreemanChoi Min-sikA woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.ScarJo slays as a woman who is able to use 100 percent of her brain after a botched drug trafficking operation. The film is a nonstop adrenaline rush from start to finish. The final 20 minutes is some of the coolest cinema you'll see all year.
- DirectorJohn StockwellStarsJonathan Daniel BrownKenny WormaldAaron YooAn eighteen year old high school drop out and his twenty-seven year old friend start trafficking marijuana across the border of Canada in order to make money and their lives are changed forever.Sure, it's not a landmark achievement in cinema. But it is a fun way to spend two hours being entertained. And, after all, isn't that the point of watching a movie? Stoners will love it, but even if you've never so much as taken a toke in your life, you're sure to enjoy this unique (and true) story.
- DirectorNicholas StollerStarsSeth RogenRose ByrneZac EfronAfter they are forced to live next to a fraternity house, a couple with a newborn baby do whatever they can to take them down.Seth Rogen is always funny, and this flick is no exception. It's also fairly accurate in it's portrayal of college fraternity life, even though those involved in fraternity life won't admit to that. It's another damn good comedy in a year full of disappointing ones.
- DirectorWally PfisterStarsJohnny DeppRebecca HallMorgan FreemanA scientist's drive for artificial intelligence takes on dangerous implications when his own consciousness is uploaded into one such program.Johnny Depp's latest mind bender is a good, thought provoking film. It may not be his best film in recent memory, but it is a welcome break from pirates, vampires, and talking chameleons.
- DirectorChristopher LandonStarsAndrew JacobsJorge DiazGabrielle WalshWhen a young man becomes the target of a malevolent entity, he must uncover its true intentions before it takes complete control of him.The only reason I include this film is because it is actually a decent movie, and every Paranormal Activity since the first one has been absolutely awful. I wasn't sold at first, but after the plot develops a bit you'll find yourself pleasantly surprised by this latest installment in a franchise that probably shouldn't have gone past the first film.
