Steve and his friend, Smiley Burnette, unravel the Sandersons' plot to kill Penny for her inheritance and Jack is ultimately freed.

Yager and Murdock, actually the leaders behind the outlaw gang, are out to get Steve, whose father had once jailed them elsewhere. Martin Oaks, the newly-appointed sheriff dupes Smiley into capturing Steve. Steve escapes jail again and, in the guise of the Durango Kid, renews the pursuit and capture of Yager and Murdock.

Steve pacifies him, and they both ride out to the range and discover a gang of men, led by "Spud" Henry, rounding up the wild horses. Henry produces a paper, similar to the one Steve gave "Bronc" and signed by the Secretary of the Interior, and Steve, knowing the paper is a forgery, slaps an injunction on the land, forbidding any horses to be rounded up until the matter is cleared. Henry has had a cleaver counterfeiter forge the signature and knows he will be found out, so he orders his men to rustle the horses and run them to the railroad siding for shipment. But the Durango Kid takes a hand.

Meanwhile,henchmen Rankin (George Chesebro) and Slade (Zon Murray) are vainly attempting to learn the location of the treasure from Dobbs. Steve begins to suspect that Munro is involved, and offers a $5,000 reward for information leading to Dobb's whereabouts and announces that the treasure will be divided among the needy ranchers in the area.

But the Durango Kid (Charles Starrett) gives chase and retrieves the money. At the relay station, Karen meets the Durango Kid again, and his pal Smiley (Smiley Burnette), but does not recognize the former in his guise of Steve Haverly. Durango learns of cattlemen scattering poisoned wheat, but does not know who the instigators are. Smiley's trading post is wrecked and Karen offers Smiley and his boys (Ozie Waters and His Colorado Rangers)a job playing for a show that night. Catlett catches Karen eavesdropping while he and his men are plotting to steal Steve's cattle herd. Catlett realizes he must change his plans and instead of attacking Steve's herd on the south range, he intends to attack the north range, and has Steve informed of the south range attack.

Hawkins' gang wrecks the newspaper office of Jake Parker, but Hawkins loses a marked $100 bill he had stolen from the Express rider. Jake finds it and sends for Steve and Sheriff Tim Collins. Knowing that Hawkins still poses a danger to Jake, Steve switches to the Durango Kid and kidnaps him, hiding him in the carpentry shop ran by his pal Smiley. There, Jake runs off handbills and notices that the Spur is opened for settlement and land will be acquired through a first-one-there landrush. The Hawkins gang, secretly led by rancher Caleb Garvey, tries to circumvent the landrush by taking a short cut and starting a prairie fire in the path of the landrushers. Steve aids the prospective land owners by having them dig fire ditches and then, as the Durango Kid, swooping down on the gang members who are setting up property claims in the Spur.

Mallory sells his interest in the business to Hudson for $50,000 and heads for California. Seeing him off are Hudson's secretary Anne Parker, her father Sam Parker, owner of the Gold Moon Mine and his miners Hank Penny and the Plantation Boys (Harold Hensley, Noel Boggs, Sanford Williams and Fenton Reynolds). Hudson plans to rob the wagon train and blame the Durango Kid, and sends Curlew and his henchmen to do the job. Killing Mallory in the raid, Curlew caches the money rather than taking it to Hudson. Despite that, Hudson learns that Carter plans a gold shipment and orders Curlew to rob the stage. Steve and Smiley hit town and Steves decides that Curlew and his brother Red could bear watching. The Durango Kid breaks up the first robbery attempt, but a second one is successful, although Durango learns from a wounded henchman that the Curlew gang has a hideout in Lost Canyon.

Steve suggests that Sheriff Connor visit the government about a railroad project, and Taggart instructs Slade and the gang leader to kill Connor on his trip back.

Along the trail, Steve witnesses the holdup of a wagon driven by Sally Boylston, the niece of missing rancher Andrew Boylston. After the robber steals a legal document belonging to Sally, Steve overtakes him and escorts him to town, arriving just after Sally and her passenger, banker Henry Emerson, arrive. Jim Norton, the foreman of the Boylston ranch, who is secretly in league with the rustlers, accuses Steve of being one of the bandits. The document in Steve's possession is used to convict him, and he is sentenced to be hanged. Preparations for Steve's execution are underway when Tex and Canonball ride into town and rescue him. Later, disguising himself as The Durango Kid, a masked fighter for justice, Steve visits Sally at her ranch, and she tells him that Norton, despite the threat of the rustlers, has decided to drive a herd of cattle to an isolated Army outpost. Suspecting a setup, Steve, Tex and Cannonball disrupt the ensuing cattle raid and follow the rustlers to their hideout. There, they discover that Boylston is being held hostage, and after a shootout in which the rancher is wounded, they free him and take him to his ranch. While Sally and Tex take Boylston to the doctor in town, Steve and Cannonball decoy the bandits. Just as Steve shoots one of the rustlers, the sheriff and his posse appear. The outlaws accuse Steve and Cannonball of being rustlers, but Steve claims that Boylston can prove his innocence. The sheriff then accompanies them all to town, but when Boylston and the others fail to arrive, he jails Steve and Cannonball. After breaking out of the cell, Steve, suspecting that Norton and his henchmen are holding Boylston, Tex and Sally prisoner, dons his Durango Kid disguise and rides to the Boylston ranch to search for evidence to incriminate Norton. Upon finding a damning bank book in Norton's name, Steve confronts him with the evidence and threatens to turn him over to the authorities unless Norton gives him half of his ill-gotten gains. Norton consents and leads Steve to his hideout, where a blazing gunfight ensues between Steve and the outlaws. Just in the nick of time, Cannonball and the sheriff arrive to apprehend Norton and his henchmen and bring them to justice.

Rancher Sam Lowry is killed by Mace Ballard because he learned that Ballard's men are waging war against the homesteaders. Ballard blames the killing on "The Durango Kid", a a mysterious frontier Robin Hood friendly to the homesteaders. This accusation makes Bill Lowry more than a little suspicious of Ballard for, unknown to anyone, he is the Durango Kid, a role he has assumed in order to fight against the Ballard gang. When Ballard's men raid the Ben Winslow homestead, they are driven off by Bill and his ranch hands but not before the home is burned and the cattle scattered. Taking a shine to Winslow's daughter, Nancy, Bill masks himself as "Durango", strips Ballard of all his cash and gives it to the homesteaders. Ballard has U. S. Marshal Trayboe post a reward for "Durango", and Trayboe, wiser than Ballard gives him credit for, makes Bill a deputy charged with bringing "Durango" in. The Kid keeps taking money from Ballard and giving it to the homesteaders that have been burned out and hiding in Hidden Valley. Ballard kidnaps Nancy and sets a trap for Bill, whom he now suspects is "Durango". But, with the help of Marshal Trayboe, Bill escapes and kills Ballard, who boasted in front of Bill that he has killed the elder Lowry, in a gunfight. Bill Lowry officially retires as "The Durango Kid" and settles in on his father's ranch with Nancy,
