Megalomaniacal Master Criminals.
Mad scientists, superthieves, Emperors of Crime, evil geniuses; in short, super-criminals. I'm not talking comic book arch-enemies, though I'll include a few. These are the masters of evil that graced the screen from other sources. These are names like Moriarty, Mabuse, Fu Manchu, and Bloefeld. I mostly want to stick to the megalomaniacs; but, I may throw in a super-thief or two. The line is often blurred. I will include comic and serial supervillains, if they are real big baddies; but, not generic nazis and gangsters, including enemy agents. So, no Dr Daka but there will be Lex Luthors.

- DirectorLouis FeuilladeStarsRené NavarreEdmund BreonGeorges MelchiorInspector Juve is tasked to investigate and capture an infamous criminal Fantomas. This French serial adapts the pulp criminal to the screen, as he battles Inspector Juve, who tries to stop his mad schemes of death and destruction. This was highly influential, both in literary form and on film. Several more serials would follow, all directed by French maestro Lois Feuillade, who would also direct Les Vampires and Judex. Rene Navarre stars as the criminal genius and master of disguise.
- DirectorLouis FeuilladeStarsRené NavarreEdmund BreonGeorges MelchiorIn Part Two of Louis Feuillade's 5 1/2-hour epic follows Fantômas, the criminal lord of Paris, master of disguise, the creeping assassin in black, as he is pursued by the equally resourceful Inspector Juve.Fantomas returns to battle Inspector Juve again.
- DirectorLouis FeuilladeStarsRené NavarreEdmund BreonGeorges MelchiorAfter a body disappears from inside the prison, a series of crimes take place, all seemingly by the dead man. With Juve presumed dead, Fandor must investigate alone. Will Fantomas finally be brought to justice?Back again.
- DirectorLouis FeuilladeStarsRené NavarreGeorges MelchiorLaurent MorléasThe press and the public opinion suggest that Inspector Juve may in fact be Fantômas. As Juve is jailed, the actual Fantômas schemes to keep him behind bars forever. And again.
- DirectorLouis FeuilladeStarsRené NavarreEdmund BreonGeorges MelchiorHaving committed murder in Belgium, Fantomas is sentenced to life imprisonment. Two crimes committed in France suggest to inspector Juve that the Fantomas gang is still at work. He conceives the idea that if Fantomas is set free it will be possible to follow him and capture him and the remaining members of the gang. The villain escapes from prison and makes his way to the railroad station and boards a train where he is tracked by private detectives. When the train stops at a country station, Fantomas alights with the intention of making good his escape, but he finds that he is being followed by two detectives, whom he recognizes. He goes back to his carriage, which leads the detectives to think he is quite safe, but he crosses the train and leaves by the opposite door, jumping into the baggage wagon of the train on the opposite rail. Just at that moment the train moves and a magistrate who happens to have nearly missed the train also jumps into the baggage wagon. Fantomas was who hiding, attacks the magistrate, and after a severe struggle in which he is victorious assumes the disguise of the magistrate and takes his clothes and papers. He continues the journey as the magistrate, successfully rescues certain criminals, who are brought before him to be tried, and manages to blackmail several members of society, with whom he is brought in contact. While here he is recognized by Fandor, the young and clever journalist who happens to come into the district and who has suspicions as to the authenticity of the magistrate. He decides to keep watch upon him. His suspicions are well founded and he identifies the magistrate as none other than Fantomas. After much trouble, he is able to get papers committing Fantomas to prison, but Fantomas' suspecting his immediate arrest, issues an order to the head warden, and tells him that it is Detective Juve's intention to be arrested disguised as Fantomas. The warden is not to tell a soul of the detective's intentional disguise, but is to let him remain in prison until 12 o'clock midnight, when the head warden is to personally release him. The police, not suspecting anything of this, feel quite safe when Fantomas is put in the cell and securely barred and locked. His scheme works favorably and once more Fantomas is at large.Guess who?
- DirectorLouis FeuilladeStarsMusidoraÉdouard MathéMarcel LévesqueAn intrepid reporter and his loyal friend battle a bizarre secret society of criminals known as The Vampires.Louis Feuillade directed this masterpiece, starring Musidora. The Vampires are a criminal gang, with an agent, played by Musidora, known as Irma Vep. She finds herself at odds with with other criminals and the Grand Master of The Vampires. Very influentil in its time and quite daring, with Musidora clad in a black leotard, in a era of great modesty. Irma Vep would influence such characters as Catwoman, Modesty Blaise, and even Emma Peel.
- DirectorAlexander ButlerStarsH.A. SaintsburyDaisy BurrellBooth ConwayAn ex-convict tries to kill the detective who once posed as a member of an American hooded clan.Moriarty appears in this silent-era Sherlock Holmes film. The literary Moriarty appeared in only one Sherlock Holmes story, "The Final Problem." His presence looms over the follow-up, "The Empty House," and he is referred to in others; but, he has a limited role in the Sherlock Holmes canon. However, it was so memorable that people can't say Sherlock Holmes without invoking Moriarty. He is one of the templates of the supercriminal.
- DirectorEdward SedgwickStarsEdward RosemanEdna MurphyJohnnie WalkerFantomas, a master criminal, offers to give up his life of crime if the authorities promise not to prosecute him for his past crimes. He is enraged when they refuse his ultimatum, and determines to terrorize the city into submitting to his demands. This was an American Fantomas, which altered the story and gave him an American opponent. The name was changed to Diablos, when it was shown in France.
- DirectorFritz LangStarsRudolf Klein-RoggeAud Egede-NissenGertrude WelckerArch-criminal Dr. Mabuse sets out to make a fortune and run Berlin. Detective Wenk sets out to stop him.Fritz Lang brings Norbert Jacques Dr Mabuse to life in this silent epic. Mabuse is a German Moriarty, with a bit of Dr Caligari thrown in. Mabuse is the mastermind at the center of a web of criminal activity, in Werimar Germany. Lang uses the film to showcase the corruption of the Weimar Republic. The film was generally shown in two parts, as it is over 4 hours long. It is considered to be a masterpiece of German expressionist cinema.
- DirectorA.E. ColebyStarsH. Agar LyonsFred PaulJoan ClarksonA killer kitty with poison-tipped claws, giant noxious mushrooms and aphonia-inducing flowers are just some of the challenges faced by Sir Denis Nayland Smith and Dr Petrie in their battles against arch-villain Fu Manchu. The Lord of Strange Deaths, Dr Fu Manchu, first came to the screen in this silent serial, starring Harry Agar Lyons. He would reappear in 1924 in The Further Mysteries of Dr. Fu Manchu, which seems to be missing from IMDB. Fu Manchu is a master of many scientific disciplines and a lover of exotic tortures. He is long-lived, thanks to the elixir vitae. The insidious doctor is the creation of Sax Rohmer, who allegedly based him on an actual London criminal, of the notorious Limehouse district (which was a major Asian area). He has long represented the so-called "yellow peril" that was prominent in politics and popular fiction of the era. At first, Fu Manchu is an agent of the Si-Fan secret society, which seeks to drive out the Western Imperialists. Later, he is master of the Si-Fan or, at least, one of the powers of the group. He uses Thugee and Dacoits to carry out his evil plans and assassinations and has a fondness for monstrous creatures. Opposing him is Nayland Smith and Dr. Petrie, a sort of Holmes and Watson. Smith and Petrie are able to defeat Fu Manchus schemes, but the world will hear from him again!
- DirectorRupert JulianLon ChaneyErnst LaemmleStarsLon ChaneyMary PhilbinNorman KerryA mad, disfigured composer seeks love with a lovely young opera singer.Lon Chaney is Erik, the maniacal maestro, in this never topped classic version of Gaston Leroux tale. The Phantom is a very specific madman; however, he is the template for many would-be world conquerors, especially those with hidden lairs and an appreciation for organ music.
- DirectorHenri DesfontainesStarsRené NavarreElmire VautierLucien DalsaceA phantom appears in the Louvre museum in the middle of the night in search of something in the dark corridors.French film, based on the crime novel, about a madman loose in the Louvre, who is actually stealing art treasures. It would be more prominently adapted into a popular tv series, in the 60s.
- DirectorRowland V. LeeStarsWarner OlandNeil HamiltonJean ArthurDuring the Boxer Rebellion in China during the early 20th century, in which a Chinese secret society attacked all westerners and anyone who associated with them, Dr. Fu Manchu's wife and child are killed by foreigners. Enraged, he vows to take his revenge on the British army officers he holds responsible for the killings. The first American Fu, with Charlie Chan's Warner Oland is the evil doctor. Fu Manchu's wife and child are killed during the Boxer Rebellion and he uses a white girl, left in his care before the attack, to seek revenge.

HeggieJean ArthurThe villainous master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu sets out to destroy the people he holds responsible for the death of his family.Warner Oland is back as the Lord of Strange Deaths. He returns from the dead to continue his revenge for the death of his family.
- DirectorDorothy ArznerOtto BrowerEdmund GouldingStarsJean ArthurClara BowMaurice ChevalierA musical revue that basically has Paramount stars and contract-players doing things some had never done on screen, and wouldn't again; such as Ruth Chatteron , in a French-café setting singing "My Marine" (written by Richard A. Whiting and Raymond B. Eagan) to a group of U. S. Marines, including Stuart Eriwn, Stanley Smith and Frederic March; Buddy Rogers doing a song-duet with Lillian Roth called "Any Time's the Time to Fall in Love" (written by Elise Jans and Jack King), on a cuckoo-clock set; and Clara Bow singing and dancing in the "True To The Navy Now" number to a group of sailors.Warner Oland appears as Fu Manchu, opposite William Powell as Philo Vance and Clive Brook as Sherlock Holmes, in the mini-spoof, Murder Will Out, in this omnibus film.
- DirectorLeslie S. HiscottStarsArthur WontnerIan FlemingMinnie RaynerA card cheat is threatened with exposure into joining a criminal enterprise that Holmes believes is controlled by Professor Moriarty.British film, where Moriarty is compelling a Foreign Office bureaucrat into helping with a counterfeiting operation, in Europe.
- DirectorLloyd CorriganStarsAnna May WongWarner OlandSessue HayakawaPrincess Ling Moy, a young and beautiful Chinese aristocrat lives next door, unbeknownst to her, to Dr. Fu Manchu, a brilliant but twisted genius who is out to rule the world. She is involved with Ah Kee, a handsome young man, who also unbeknownst to her, is a secret agent out to thwart the heinous plots of Fu Manchu. As it turns out, Fu is not only her next-door neighbor, he is also, (unbeknownst to her), her father. When she finds out, will she take her father's part and fight the men out to get Fu, or will she become a brave heroine and save the world even if it is from the devious doings of her own Dad? Yes, it's dated, and there isn't nearly enough of Warner Oland in it; but it moves along well, has a lot of action, Wong and Hayakawa were fine actors, and if you're a Charley Chan fan, it's worth it to how much, if any, of Fu Oland used when creating Charley Chan.Anna May Wong and Sessue Hayakawa join Warner Oland in this sequel. Wong is Ling Moy, a woman who lives next to an agent, Ah Kee, who seeks to destroy Fu Manchu. Little does he know that Ling Moy is the daughter of Fu Manchu. In the books, Fu Manchu's daighter is Fah Lo Suee, who often schemes against her father, as well as aiding him. The character was usually renamed in the movies.
- DirectorCharles BrabinCharles VidorStarsBoris KarloffLewis StoneKaren MorleyEnglishmen race to find the tomb of Genghis Khan before the sinister Fu Manchu does.Probably the most famous (and infamous) screen appearance of the Lord of Strange Deaths. Boris Karloff stars as the doctor, with Myrna Loy as Fah Lo See. The film features exotic tortures and elaborate sets, as well as a lot of racism and campy humor. Nayland Smith races against Fu Manchu to find the tomb of Ghengis Khan. The film was a major source of controversy, with the Chinese government launching an official protest and Asian-American groups protesting the depictions of Asians. It also gained controversy for lines like "Kill the white man and take his women" and scenes of Myrna Loy aroused by torture (before the Hayes Code). The scenes were taken out on the vhs release; but, restored for dvd release.
- DirectorPál FejösStarsThomy BourdelleTania FédorJean WormsThe Marquise de Langrune invites her friends at her castle in Beaulieu. Among them is Lord Beltham who also came to bring her a significant sum of money. The mysterious Fantômas kills the Marquise during the night. Inspector Juve is sent on his trail.1930s remake, from director Paul Fejos, drawing inspiration from the original novel.
- DirectorFritz LangStarsRudolf Klein-RoggeOtto WernickeThomy BourdelleA criminal mastermind uses hypnosis to rule the rackets after death.Lang returns to Dr Mabuse, this time using him as a warning against the Nazis. Mabuse apparently died at the end of the original film, yet his specter looms over Germany, via the writings of a mad man, in an insane asylum. A new criminal organization is operating, with a hidden puppet master. The film also features Inspektor Lohmann, the police inspector from Lang's film M, who tries to find the mastermind at the center of the criminal gang. This masterpiece of cinema was banned by the Nazis and Lang hightailed it out of Germany, though the story has been exaggerated, over time. he actually left before the Nazis had fully consolidated power.
- DirectorColbert ClarkAlbert HermanStarsBela LugosiViva TattersallMalcolm McGregorA mysterious criminal known as The Whispering Shadow commits crimes by means of a gang he controls by television and radio rays. Jack Norton, whose brother was murdered by The Whispering Shadow, suspects that the eerie Professor Strang - whose ghostly wax museum contains figures far too lifelike - may be involved in the crimes.Bela Lugosi stars as a mad scientist who kills via remote control.
- DirectorLeslie S. HiscottStarsArthur WontnerLyn HardingLeslie PerrinsHolmes, retired to Sussex, is drawn into a last case when his arch enemy Moriarty arranges with an American gang to kill one John Douglas, a country gentleman with a mysterious past.Moriarty is called in by an American criminal gang to help destroy an informant who sent them to prison. Holmes and Watson are there to stop him.
- DirectorFrederick StephaniRay TaylorStarsBuster CrabbeJean RogersCharles MiddletonFlash Gordon, Dale Arden and Dr. Alexis Zarkov visit the planet Mongo to thwart the evil schemes of Emperor Ming the Merciless, who has set his planet on a collision course with Earth.Ming the Merciless was essentially Fu Manchu, with a whole kingdom of soldiers, not just the Si-Fan. Charles Middleton is rather wooden as Ming; but, the serial is exciting enough to get past that. Ming is also at the center of the other two Buster Crabbe serials; but, I'll just use this one as a placeholder for Ming.
- DirectorThomas BentleyStarsArthur WontnerIan FlemingLyn HardingSherlock Holmes takes a vacation and visits his old friend Sir Henry Baskerville. His vacation ends when he suddenly finds himself in the middle of a double-murder mystery. Now he's got to find Professor Moriarty and the horse Silver Blaze before the great cup final horse race.Moriarty and Sir Henry Baskerville are brought into this story, which has little to do with the original Doyle story, "The Adventure of Silver Blaze," which deals with the disappearance of a champion race horse, on the eve of an important race. The film was retitlted Murder at the Baskervilles to cash in on the Rathbone Hound of the Baskervilles.
- DirectorErnst MoermanStarsJacqueline ArpéFrançoise BertL. DegrooteIn this surrealist piece of avant-garde generation of Belgian cinema, French masked master of crime Fantômas travels through the world seeking his beloved Elvire. He destroys all decency in his trip, as a great mischief-maker.Another 30s Fantomas film.
- DirectorJohn EnglishWilliam WitneyStarsLee PowellBruce BennettEleanor StewartThe US marine corps must battle a would-be world conqueror who uses electricity as a weapon.Few serial villains were as memorable as The Lightning. This wasn't just some guy in a robe and mask, talking to his henchmen via a radio. The Lightning had style! He wore a black helmet, tunic, pants, gloves boots, and cape. Sound familiar? Yep, The Lightning would help to inspire Darth Vader. The Lightning traveled around in his flying wing (left over from the first Dick Tracy serial), where he would launch his aerial torpedoes at targets, as he seeks to conquer the world. Opposing him are a pair of Marines, including Herman Brix, one of the non-Weismuller Tarzans. The serial is a lot of fun.
- DirectorAlfred L. WerkerStarsBasil RathboneNigel BruceIda LupinoThe master sleuth hunts his archenemy, Professor Moriarty, who is planning the crime of the century.Basil Rathbone's second Holmes film begins with Prof. Moriarty beating the rap, despite Holmes entering the courtroom to offer new evidence (sadly, after the not guilty verdict as been rendered). Moriarty continues to scheme, as Holmes looks for a way to bring him down. The film follows a threat on the life of the fiance of a young woman, played by Ida Lupino. Moriarty's true purpose, though, is to steal the Crown Jewels. Boo, hiss!!!

- DirectorJohn EnglishWilliam WitneyStarsHenry BrandonWilliam RoyleRobert KellardThe nefarious Dr. Fu Manchu searches for the keys to the tomb of Genghis Khan, in order to fulfill a prophecy that will enable him to conquer the world. His nemesis, Dr. Nayland Smith, and his associates fight to keep the evil doctor from getting his hands on the keys. This Republic serial features Fu Manchu and his beautiful agent, Karamaneh. It is considered to be one of Republic's finest serials, and was directed by William Witney and John English, Republic's best directors. Fu seeks the Scepter of Ghengis Khan, with which he will unite the people of Asia and rule the world. This was a rare serial that focused on the mystery elements, rather than action and stunts.
- DirectorJohn EnglishWilliam WitneyStarsEduardo CiannelliRobert WilcoxWilliam NewellA mad scientist plots the domination of America and only the masked hero, The Copperhead, can stop him. This was written as a Superman serial; but, Republic couldn't come to an agreement with National (DC). Instead, they put a guy in a suit and chain mail mask and sent him up against another hooded villain. It's here because the villain gets top billing, and for that reason only.
- DirectorJohn EnglishWilliam WitneyStarsTom TylerFrank Coghlan Jr.William 'Billy' BenedictTo protect a magic talisman from being used for evil, a teenage boy named Billy Batson is given the power to become an adult superhero, Captain Marvel, with a single magic word: "Shazam!"Captain Marvel made his screen debut in arguably the greatest adventure serial of all time. Opposing him is The Scarab, another masked and robed bad guy. However, this guy has an ancient scarab weapon that needs the entire set of lenses to create a death ray. His henchmen go around murdering people to get their lenses while we wonder which member of the original archeological expedition is the villain.
- DirectorRoy William NeillStarsBasil RathboneNigel BruceLionel AtwillSherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson must protect a Swiss inventor of an advanced bomb sight from falling into German hands. This time, that rotter Moriarty is working with the Nazis. Bad show, wot? Just not cricket....
- DirectorArthur LubinStarsNelson EddySusanna FosterClaude RainsAn acid-scarred composer rises from the Paris sewers to boost his favorite opera understudy's career.Claude Rains stars in this Universal version of the story. Rains is excellent and the film tries to establish more motivation for the Phantom's actions.
- DirectorRoy William NeillStarsBasil RathboneNigel BruceHillary BrookeSherlock Holmes investigates when young women around London turn up murdered, each with a finger severed. Scotland Yard suspects a madman, but Holmes believes the killings to be part of a diabolical plot.Moriarty comes down in the world a bit here. He schemes to hypnotize rich men into thinking they have murdered their lovers and then blackmails them over the guilt. Kind of low rent, for Moriarty.

- DirectorFred C. Why they couldn't have used this for Captain America and make the villain the Red Skull, I don't know.
- DirectorSpencer Gordon BennetFred C. That's right, no Lex Luthor. Instead, we get a hot chick in a slinky dress, with her gang of thugs. Carol Foreman is great though, so the Spider Lady gets supervillain status in my book.
- DirectorRobert VernayStarsMarcelle ChantalAimé ClariondAlexandre RignaultEveryone in Paris thinks Fantomas is dead. A wave of extortion, blackmail and murder all point to the master criminal. Inspector Juve and his reporter friend Fandor set out to find the truth. Not 100% sure; but, this is likely a remake of the Feuillade serial.
- DirectorFred C. Enter the head of security and scientist in his own right Jeff King, as the Rocket Man. Probably the last great Republic serial.

- DirectorRichard FleischerStarsKirk DouglasJames MasonPaul LukasA ship sent to investigate a wave of mysterious sinkings encounters the advanced submarine, the Nautilus, commanded by Captain Nemo. The greatest version of Jules verne's classic, with James Mason as Nemo. Nemo is less a maniacal villain and more of a misguided crusader. Nemo is a very layered character and far more sympathetic than most antagonists, so it's hard to call him a supervillain or criminal. He is the template for many mad scientists, though.
- StarsGlen GordonLester MatthewsClark HowatDr. Fu Manchu, evil genius and possessor of seemingly unlimited financial resources, has pledged to bring about the downfall of western civilization to avenge unknown wrongs of the past. Only Sir Dennis Nayland-Smith of the Yard is able to thwart his evil plans, ranging from assassination to germ attacks to sparking an all-out war. This tv series featured the exploits of Dr Fu Manchu. It had the feel of a serial (and was produced by republic); but, the plots were resolved at the end of each episode.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsAnthony PerkinsJanet LeighVera MilesA Phoenix secretary embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother.Alfred Hitchcock presents us with the template for future cinematic villains, the Nietzschian serial killer. Actually, Norman ends up being closer to the reality of actual serial killers, than people like Hannibal Lecter or the killer in Se7en. Unfortunately, that is the modern trend in master criminals, ones who are psychopaths in search of destruction, rather than power mad criminals who want total control. The psychopath gets more into the psychology of criminal behavior; but it isn't nearly as fun.
- DirectorFritz LangStarsDawn AddamsPeter van EyckGert FröbeIn 1960s Germany, criminal mastermind Dr. Mabuse uses hypnotized victims and the surveillance equipment of a Nazi-era bugged hotel to steal nuclear technology from a visiting American industrialist.German producer Arthur Brauner convinced Fritz Lang to return to Germany and his Mabuse character. The plot revolves around a hotel with cameras hidden throughout. Mabuse hypnotizes a woman into attempting to commit suicide. An American saves her and works to stop Mabuse's plot. Lang's last great masterpiece. Brauner wanted Lang to create more; but Lang wasn't interested. Brauner continued without the director. Goldfinger's gert Frobe plays Inspector Kraus, who is investigating the events in the hotel and Wolfgang Preiss is a clairvoyant, named Prof. Jordan.
- DirectorWilliam WitneyStarsVincent PriceCharles BronsonHenry HullIn 1868, an American scientist and his team become hostages of fanatical pacifist Robur who uses his airship Albatross to destroy military targets on Earth.Vincent Price stars as Robur, who finds himself in opposition to Charles Bronson. Price is well cast; but, Bronson is a bit out of place, as Verne's heroes tend to be thinkers more than punchers. The film mixes elements of both Robur novels (Clipper of the Clouds and Master of the World) and makes him more like Nemo than Verne did (though there was always a lot of that). Robur seeks to make war on people who create armaments and perpetuate war, which is fairly noble, really. Again, more misguided than evil.

Robert Shaw is the cold blooded assassin Grant. The original novel features the same plot, but it is instigated by SMERSH, a sub-section of the KGB. here, SPECTRE assumes the role. It isn't really a film about conquest or crime, just revenge and murder. But, SPECTRE is a maniacal organization.

What Fleming and Eon failed to understand is that FT Knox wasn't the key repository for US gold. It was actually in New York. Regardless, it's a great film and Goldfinger was one of the great Bond megalomaniacs.

Only two of them reappeared. One was Victor Buono's Count Mazeppi; but, the man we all loved to hate was the amazingly talented Michael Dunn as Dr Miguelito Loveless, small in stature, titanic in brainpower. Dr Loveless was one of the greatest villains ever seen on tv, along with Richard Kiel as bodyguard/henchman, Voltaire. - DirectorDon SharpStarsChristopher LeeNigel GreenJoachim FuchsbergerAfter cheating death, master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu returns with a plot to contaminate the River Thames with a powerful toxin extracted from Tibetan poppies. After a long absence from the movie screen, The Lord of Strange Deaths returned, in the form of Christopher Lee. The series is set in th 20s, though it appears as an odd mix of the 20s and 60s. The women are very 1960s, while the cars and men seem a bit more 1920s. This is the best of the series, with Fu Manchu surviving an execution (seen at the beginning of the film) and launching a plot to destroy England with a poison, derived from a deadly flower. Fu kills an entire village in tests of the poison. he operates from a secret base, under the Thames; but must eventually flee, while Nayland Smith tracks him to Tibet. Nigel Green is an excellent Nayland Smith, with Howard marion as Petrie, and Tsai Chin as the very sexy Lin Tang, Fu's daughter (a surrogate Fah Lo Suee). The series gets progressively worse after this; but, lee is always great.
- CreatorLorenzo Semple Jr.William DozierStarsAdam WestBurt WardAlan NapierThe Caped Crusader and his young ward battle evildoers in Gotham City.Batman appeared in two serials, where he fought a Japanese agent and a generic hooded serial villain, which weren't quite up to the task. This time, we got the major Batman baddies, with Joker, Penguin, and Catwoman, plus the Riddler, who never really wowed, in the comics. We got new baddies, as well, though most were fairly pointless, except for the always awesome Victor Buono as King Tut. The series was wonderful, both funny parody and great adventure, depending on your point of view. The first season is the best and the second is mostly good. The third season gave us Batgirl; but, the stories really varied in quality and some of the worst episodes are in that season. I'd classify Joker, Penguin and Catwoman as the reall master criminals, with Riddler close behind. Most of the rest are just gimmicks for the sake of a gimmick.

Unfortunately, they didn't bring her back. The second was Fausta, the Nazi Wonder Woman, played by Linda Day George. She was great; but, they had her turned by the end and she didn't come back. They should have had her defeated (she was an Olympic athlete; but, not superhuman); but, come back and face WW again, with super powers. Alas, 70s tv didn't go with story arcs.

Watson, despairing at Holmes increasing addiction to cocaine (the seven per-cent solution, of the title), consults with Holmes' brother Mycroft, who enlists Moriarty's help to lead Sherlock to Vienna. There, he finds that the trail has been a ruse and he is introduced to Dr. Sigmund Freud, who is to treat his addiction.
