Kobe Bean Bryant was an American professional basketball player. A shooting guard, he spent his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, Bryant won five NBA championships, was an 18-time All-Star, a 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, a 12-time member of the All-Defensive Team, the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), and a two-time NBA Finals MVP. Bryant also led the NBA in scoring twice, and ranks fourth in league all-time regular season and postseason scoring. He was posthumously voted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020 and named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.
Born in Philadelphia and partly raised in Italy, Bryant was recognized as the top American high-school basketball player while at Lower Merion. The son of former NBA player Joe Bryant, he declared for the 1996 NBA draft and was selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the 13th overall pick; he was then traded to the Lakers. As a rookie, Bryant earned a reputation as a high-flyer by winning the 1997 Slam Dunk Contest, and was named an All-Star by his second season. Despite a feud with teammate Shaquille O'Neal, the pair led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA championships from 2000 to 2002.
In 2003, Bryant was charged with sexual assault;with the alleged victim being a 19 year old hotel employee. Criminal charges were later dropped after the accuser failed to testify, and a lawsuit was settled out of court, with Bryant issuing a public apology and admitting to a sexual encounter while maintaining the interaction was consensual. The accusation briefly tarnished Bryant's reputation, resulting in the loss of several of his endorsement contracts.
After the Lakers lost the 2004 NBA Finals, O'Neal was traded and Bryant became the cornerstone of the Lakers. He led the NBA in scoring in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. On January 22, 2006, he scored a career-high 81 points; the second most points scored in a single NBA game, behind Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game. Bryant led the team to consecutive championships in 2009 and 2010, both times being named NBA Finals MVP. He continued to be among the top players in the league through the 2012-13 season, when he suffered a torn Achilles tendon at age 34. His next two seasons were cut short by injuries to his knee and shoulder, respectively. Citing physical decline, Bryant retired after the 2015-16 season. In 2017, the Lakers retired both his #8 and #24 jerseys, making him the only player in NBA history to have multiple jerseys retired by the same franchise.
The all-time leading scorer in Lakers history, Bryant was the first guard in NBA history to play 20 seasons. His 18 All-Star designations are the second most all time, and he has the most consecutive appearances as a starter. Bryant's four NBA All-Star Game MVP Awards are tied with Bob Pettit for the most in NBA history. He gave himself the nickname "Black Mamba" in the mid-2000s, and the epithet became widely adopted by the general public. He won gold medals on the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic teams. In 2018, he won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for the film Dear Basketball (2017).
Bryant died, along with his daughter Gianna and seven others, in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, in 2020. A number of tributes and memorials were subsequently issued, including renaming the All-Star MVP Award in his honor.

Composer and conductor Alexandre Desplat, Oscar winner and seven-time Academy Award nominated, for his prolific filmography and his collaborations with Stephen Frears, Terrence Malick, Ang Lee, Kathryn Bigelow, Jacques Audiard, Wes Anderson, Roman Polanski, George Clooney or Matteo Garrone is one of the most worthy heirs of the French masters of film music.
Brought up in a cultural and musical mix thanks to his Greek mother and his French father who studied and got married in California, he grew up listening to French symphonists, Ravel or Debussy , world music and jazz.
He studied piano and trumpet before choosing the flute as the main instrument. As a free auditor in Claude Ballif's analysis class at the CNSM, he enriches his classical musical education by studying Brazilian and African music. He will record later with Carlinhos Brown or Ray Lema.
Passionate about film music, it's as much his musical sensitivity as his intimate approach to cinematographic language that will allow his privileged relationship with filmmakers. Inspired by the scores of Maurice Jarre, Bernard Herrmann, Nino Rota or Georges Delerue, it is after hearing the score of John Williams for Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) that he decides to compose exclusively for the big screen.
During the recording of his first feature film he meets violinist Dominique Lemonnier. This is the beginning of an exceptional artistic exchange as she becomes her favorite soloist, artistic director and wife. With his strong sense of interpretation, his creative spirit and his singular violin playing, Solré inspired Alexandre's compositions, influencing his music in depth, initiating a new way of writing for the strings in the cinema.
Collaborator of Jacques Audiard since his first film, he creates for his works strong and singular compositions and he won in 2005 for The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005) the Silver Bear of the Berlinale, and his first Caesar. He works in France with Philippe de Broca and Francis Girod but Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) of Peter Webber, his 50th score for the film, he gets a first Golden Globe nomination and BAFTA and began his rise in Hollywood. Leading American career and European collaborations and remaining faithful to his directors, he composes among others Syriana (2005)'s scores of Stephen Gaghan, Birth (2004) of Jonathan Glazer, Coco Before Chanel (2009) by Anne Fontaine, Army of Crime (2009) by Robert Guédiguian, The Heir Apparent: Largo Winch (2008) by Jérôme Salle, Intimate Enemies (2007) or Hostage (2005) by Florent-Emilio Siri.
Prizes and collaborations with the greatest directors follow one another. In 2007, he received his first Oscar nomination for Stephen Frears's The Queen (2006) and won his first European Film Award. The same year, he won the Golden Globe, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award, and the World Soundtrack Award for John Curran's score The Painted Veil (2006), performed by pianist Láng Lang. He composed in 2008 for Lust, Caution (2007) by Ang Lee and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) by David Fincher which will earn him a second Oscar nomination and a fourth Golden Globes and BAFTA nomination.
With his score for The Ghost Writer (2010) by Roman Polanski, he won in 2010 a second César and a second European Film Award. The same year he wrote the music of The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) by Chris Weitz, whose album was a platinum record, and Tom Hooper's The King's Speech (2010) for which he won the BAFTA, the Grammy Award, and was nominated for the fourth time at the Oscars and for the fifth time at the Golden Globes.
In 2010-2011 he wrote the music of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) which became the third greatest success of all time. He composed in 2011 nine partitions, The Tree of Life (2011) of Terrence Malick, Carnage (2011) by Roman Polanski, Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) by George Clooney , which earned him another Oscar nomination, The Well-Digger's Daughter (2011) by Daniel Auteuil and The Ides of March (2011) by George Clooney.

Actor, father, motorbike fanatic: Charley Boorman is the epitome of the modern adventurer in pursuit of fresh challenges away from the success of his personal life. Choosing two wheels as his preferred mode of transport, Charley harnessed the challenges of a 'round the World trip with Ewan McGregor. Now his sights are set on the unyielding sands of the desert.
Charley Boorman has been riding motorcycles since he was seven years old. The son of renowned film director John Boorman, he grew up on a farm in Ireland and used to ride through the fields on his first motorbike and took part in schoolboy motor cross and Enduro races. The bike bug remained with Charley and, for four years, he ran a motorcycle race team and spent the years riding with David Jeffries and Matt Llewelyn.
In 2004, Charley and his best mate Ewan McGregor came up with the madcap idea of circumnavigating the globe on motorbikes. After months of intense preparations when at times, it looked like the project would not get off the ground, the pair set off from London in April 2004.
Over the next three grueling months, they traveled through three continents and fifteen countries. Long Way Round (2004) was the realisation of a dream born out of two friends' love of motorbikes, the freedom of the open road, and the adrenaline rush of an extreme challenge. Their entire journey was filmed for Long Way Round (2004), a unique television series that was broadcast on Sky One in the UK and Bravo (USA) and spawned a best-selling DVD, book and CD soundtrack. It has now sold the world over into many territories including Australia, Canada, Japan, France, Spain, and Italy.
Following the overwhelming success of Long Way Round (2004), Charley has become an icon in the motorcycling world. On the Long Way Round (2004), UK Tour Charley visited motorcycle and adventure exhibitions plus BMW dealerships across the UK to talk about his adventures. Each event was a sell-out as crowds flocked to catch a glimpse of Charley and have their book or DVD signed. A similar tour of the southern hemisphere is to take place this winter.
Next up, Charley is taking on the desert with one of the World's harshest challenges: the Lisbon-Dakar Rally. This is not just a race out of Europe via the Iberian Peninsula and down through West Africa. This is one of the most physically and emotionally demanding battles across inhospitable terrain, alone, to achieve the impossible. But for Charley, it is, as for many others, one of the most romantic and dangerous races known to man.
It remains the only race open to both amateur and professional bikers and for a first time participant like Charley, finishing the race in Dakar will be the ultimate goal.- Actress

Ed left his hometown two years after graduating from Plainwell High School (Plainwell, Michigan) at the age of 20 with $41 in his pocket and hitched a ride California to pursue his dream of being not a "star", but a steady working Hollywood "actor". His very first experience in the "biz" was auditioning for and subsequently winning the lead role of Howard The Duck. Initially he was told "you are too tall" (he keeps that letter readily available in his living-room and often refers to it with a humble smile).
Early in his career, Ed had performed many of his own stunts such as being run over by a big rig, flying on wires, fight scenes, being tossed, thrown & dropped great distances, and crashing through the windshield of a moving vehicle. However, his most impressive stunts just might be his Full Body Burns in the first Child's Play movie and his Full Body Burn while "flying" on wires in Leprechaun 3.
Ed Gale has appeared in over 130 Television Shows, Films, and Commercials to date; playing some of Hollywood's most famous (and infamous) characters such as "Howard" in the movie Howard The Duck; "Chucky" in Child's Play, Child's Play 2, and the Bride of Chucky; "Birdie the Early Bird" in one of the very few McDonland's commercials in which "Birdie" actually flew; "Tasha" (the baby dinosaur in the ABC Saturday morning kids show The New Land of the Lost; and the "The Mole" in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle.
Other popular films to Ed Gale's credit include; Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, Mom & Dad Save the World, and the Christmas Holiday Hit: the Polar Express.
Out of Costume, Ed has played some rather notable "human" roles as well; "Hank Tarver" (The District), "Oscar" (3rd Rock from the Sun), "Stan" (Santa, Jr.), "Benson" (Call Me Claus), "Mr. Larry Briggs" (The Hughley's), "Jimmy" (Just Shoot Me), and "Baby Jesus" (Grounded for Life).
Ed is probably most recognized for his roles as "Lavalle" (Bones), "Little Prisoner" (My Name is Earl), "Simon McKay" (Baywatch) and as the "Little Man" (O Brother, Where Art Thou?)
Ed has starred, co-starred, & guest starred along side of some of the biggest names in Hollywood, the likes of which include: Lea Thompson, Kym Whitley, John Candy, Mel Brooks, Keanu Reeves, Catherine Hicks, Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Matthew McConaughey, Ray Liotta, Charlton Heston, Billy Bob Thornton, Jeffrey Jones, Teri Garr, Hal Sparks, Holly Robinson-Peete, Caroline Rhea, Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz, Bobby Lee and many, many more!
Ed Gale is no stranger to Television Commercials either, pitching such products as: Burger King, Toys R US, Cingular Wireless, Best Buy, Progressive Insurance, Nike, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter (with Fabio), Kinko's, Twisted Metal 4, Taco Bell, Polaroid Cameras, Snapple, McDonald's, Holiday Inn, Nissan Cars (Japan), California Eggs, & Sony Video. Best known as "Officer Rabbit" from the 2001 cult-classic comedy Super Troopers and the 2018 sequel Super Troopers 2, Erik Stolhanske is a popular Hollywood comedian, actor, writer, producer, and member of the Broken Lizard Comedy Group. As one of the five principal members of the famed sketch comedy troupe, he has starred in all of the Broken Lizard films including Beerfest (2006), The Slammin' Salmon (2009), Club Dread (2004), and Puddle Cruiser, as well as performed in The Sweetest Thing (2002) and The Onion Movie (2008). On television, he can be seen on the HBO critically acclaimed series Curb Your Enthusiasm and Six Feet Under, as well as the Comedy Central special Broken Lizard Stands Up.
Erik has written, produced and starred in all the Broken Lizard comedies, including all the Super Troopers films. Together, they collaborate on the screen-writing, acting and productions of all their films. He has worked alongside a number of Academy Award-winning actors and nominees from Cloris Leachman to Donald Sutherland and Michael Clarke Duncan. He acted alongside Golden Globe winner Brian Cox in Super Troopers and Super Troopers 2. He also starred opposite Rob Lowe in Super Troopers 2 and Bill Paxton in Club Dread. He is among Hollywood's top comedic actors, known to have worked with Jim Gaffigan, Will Forte, and Johnny Knoxville. Stolhanske has co-written various screenplays, including one with NFL star Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings. A regular guest of the #1 rated morning show "The Power Trip" on KFAN Minnesota Sports Radio Station, the humorous show and video podcasts feature local and national guests.
In 1994, the Broken Lizard Group wrote and starred in the comedy short Tinfoil Monkey Agenda - about a staged hoax in which the U.S. invades the small South American country of Palogna, directed by Kevin Cooper. It earned them a trip to the Ft. Lauderdale Film Festival, and cemented in the group's minds that they should be creating full-length feature films. Their 1996 film Puddle Cruiser, where Erik plays "Freaky Reaky," was their first full-length film and premiered at the Hamptons Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prize for "Best Film". It then went on to screen at Sundance Film Festival, South by Southwest, and the London International Film Festival, securing official selections at the Berlin and London Film Festivals. The movie was filmed entirely on the campus of Colgate University. The group put together the script for their first wide-release feature movie Super Troopers, (shot in 2000), which portrays rural highway patrolmen as regular guys desperate to make their jobs entertaining. The film was invited to Sundance, where raucous screenings earned it a distribution deal with Fox Searchlight Pictures, a unit of 20th Century Fox. The film was released in February 2002, and has since developed a growing cult following over the years.
Fox Searchlight financed and distributed the group's next feature, Club Dread (2004), a parody of slasher films that takes place at an idyllic tropical resort. It was here that Erik garnered the wildly-known title "Fun Police" after his role as Sam, in charge of games and activities on the island. After Chandrasekhar directed The Dukes of Hazzard for Warner Bros., Broken Lizard was offered a deal with the studio. This relationship resulted in the group's fourth feature, Beerfest (2006), about two brothers (played by Erik Stolhanske and Paul Soter) who discover an underground Oktoberfest beer-drinking Olympics and assemble a team to compete. In 2009, Stolhanske played Guy "Meat Drapes" Metdrapedes in the comedy film The Slammin' Salmon by Broken Lizard. In the film, former Heavyweight Champion of the World, Cleon "Slammin" Salmon played by Michael Clarke Duncan, is the celebrity owner of a high-end Miami seafood restaurant, Stolhanske's comedic talents are on full display as Guy, an arrogant waiter who rightfully gets his comeuppance in the end.
In 2013, Stolhanske starred in the independent comedy feature RockBarnes: The Emperor in You, which won him "Best Performance" at the Orlando Film Festival for his lead role as RockBarnes. Using the crowd-sourcing site Indiegogo, Broken Lizard raised more than $4.5m from fans to make Super Troopers 2-the sequel to Super Troopers. The movie was released by Fox Searchlight in theaters nationwide on April 20th, 2018. And on Friday, April 20th, 2018, Super Troopers 2 was the #1 movie in America.
On television, Erik can be seen on Larry David's critically acclaimed HBO series, Curb Your Enthusiasm, where he made a cameo as "Sven Johnson" in 'The 5 Wood' in 2004, and in the Six Feet Under episode 'In Place of Anger' in 2002. He also stars in the Comedy Central special Broken Lizard Stands Up (2010) as one of the five principal members of the famed Broken Lizard sketch comedy troupe.- Actress

Eugene Curran Kelly was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the third son of Harriet Catherine (Curran) and James Patrick Joseph Kelly, a phonograph salesman. His father was of Irish descent and his mother was of Irish and German ancestry.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was the largest and most powerful studio in Hollywood when Gene Kelly arrived in town in 1941. He came direct from the hit 1940 original Broadway production of "Pal Joey" and planned to return to the Broadway stage after making the one film required by his contract. His first picture for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was For Me and My Gal (1942) with Judy Garland. What kept Kelly in Hollywood were "the kindred creative spirits" he found behind the scenes at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The talent pool was especially large during World War II, when Hollywood was a refuge for many musicians and others in the performing arts of Europe who were forced to flee the Nazis. After the war, a new generation was coming of age. Those who saw An American in Paris (1951) would try to make real life as romantic as the reel life they saw portrayed in that musical, and the first time they saw Paris, they were seeing again in memory the seventeen-minute ballet sequence set to the title song written by George Gershwin and choreographed by Kelly. The sequence cost a half million dollars (U.S.) to make in 1951 dollars. Another Kelly musical of the era, Singin' in the Rain (1952), was one of the first 25 films selected by the Library of Congress for its National Film Registry. Kelly was in the same league as Fred Astaire, but instead of a top hat and tails Kelly wore work clothes that went with his masculine, athletic dance style.
Gene Kelly died at age 83 of complications from two strokes on February 2, 1996 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California.- Gina Maria Hidalgo was born on 23 August 1928 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Thin, fidgety James Millholin made a career out of playing dyspeptic bureaucrats, nervous hotel clerks and other officious authority types. Somewhat reminiscent of Edward Everett Horton or Franklin Pangborn, Millhollin's pinched face, somewhat pop eyes and flighty mannerisms fit those roles like a glove, one of the best examples being the army psychiatrist driven to distraction trying to give Andy Griffith a psychological examination in No Time for Sergeants (1958) (a role he also played on Broadway). Born in Peoria, IL, Millhollin had a career on the Broadway stage and did much television in the early 1950s before breaking into films. At 14 years of age, Huggy fell into the acting business when his mother brought him to a cattle-call audition in New York for the Warner Brothers feature "Lean on Me", a starring role as a misguided drug-abusing junior high school student. The line to get in to the audition for the role of Thomas Sams was so long, it wrapped around three city blocks. Huggy and his mother became so discouraged waiting in the enormous line, they were just about to leave as the film's writer, Michael Schiffer, walked by and spotted the two leaving. Huggy's unique look caught the screenwriter's eye and he promptly brought Huggy to the front of the line to meet the producers and the director. Needless to say, he booked the job and the rest is history. Huggy had a string of back-to-back successes in an acting career just beginning. His very next project "Juice, " helmed by Ernest R. Dickerson, had him starring as Steel along side Samuel L. Jackson, Queen Latifah, 'Dr. Dre', Omar Epps and the late Tupac Shakur. Huggy subsequently starred in the HBO worldwide release "Strapped" that would be Forest Whitaker's directorial debut. Huggy went on to carry his first film, Phat Beach (1996) as the star from beginning to end. The next two years were even more rewarding for Huggy, as he worked his way through episodes of "Murder One, " "Moesha" and six episodes as Dupree on "The Wayans Brothers" series before finishing production on his next film "How to Be a Player" starring opposite Bill Bellamy and comedian Pierre Edwards.- Actress

John T. Woods is an award-winning actor originally from Portland, Oregon. He studied Computer Science and Archaeology at Portland State University, and trained as an actor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Based in Los Angeles for the last 20 years, he has continued to work steadily in film and television.- The daughter of glamorous British film star Margaret Lockwood was destined for an acting career by the age of five when she was enrolled in a theatrical school. Around this time her parents separated and then divorced three years later. Young Julia was often left in the care of a nanny, though her mother remained on hand to provide gentle prodding into the world of entertainment. Julia's film debut duly followed in 1947 with a tiny role in Daphne Du Maurier's Hungry Hill (1947). Mother and daughter also shared the stage on several occasions. In 1953, Julia returned to the screen as the juvenile lead in a television adaptation of Johanna Spyri's Swiss classic novel Heidi (1953). 'Toots', as she was affectionately called, went on to reprise her role in a BBC children's serial in 1954. By decade's end, she had moved from standard teenage family fare (including The Flying Eye (1955), which is possibly the first film to presage the development of drones) to bawdy comedy (Please Turn Over (1959), directed by the regular helmsman of the Carry On franchise, Gerald Thomas). Julia spent most of the 60s alternating between stage ('Peter Pan', 'Arsenic and Old Lace') and TV work. She twice more co-starred with her mother in The Royalty (1957) and its sequel The Flying Swan (1965), about the daily goings on at a posh London hotel. Her last recurring role was in a short-lived sitcom with Richard Briers, Birds on the Wing (1971), which ran to just six episodes. Julia married the character actor Ernest Clark (best known as the bluff Sir Geoffrey Loftus in the 1970s "Doctor" comedies) in December 1972. Keith John Moon was born to working class parents in Wembley, London, England, on the 23rd August, 1946. At the age of 12, he had joined the Sea Cadet Corp and was given his first musical instrument, the bugle. He left school by 15 and was in his first band, The Beachcombers; this was around the summer of 1963. There was rumour that Keith was self-taught, but history says otherwise, he was shown how to play by the late Carlo Little (1938-2005), Carlo was the original drummer in The Rolling Stones and Screaming Lord Sutch's band, The Savages.
By the age of 18, he had joined a local London band, The High Numbers; this was to consist of what is now known as The Who.
With his own unique style of drumming, rolling the sticks along the skins as to banging the typical beat, he was to become extrovertly charismatic in his life as well as his playing. With a desire, a need if you like, to be the centre of attention, this hyperactive, and largely, self destructive, personality became his own worst enemy.
With a flair for theatrical and ridiculous behaviour, he was the centre point and self-publicist for, if they liked it or not, The Who.
In the meantime, he had fathered a daughter, Mandy, to Kim. He may have been the perfect showman, but behind the scenes, he was often a very aggressive man to live around and with. Kim soon left him, taking their young daughter with her.
He started to live the high life in California, with the likes of John Lennon, Harry Nilsson and Ringo Starr, Ringo's son, Zak, was his godson, ironically, it was Zak who played with The Who in their later career, during the nineties and beyond.
While in California, he made his only solo album, Two Sides of The Moon, for MCA Records, a 1975 release, with many guest artists. Keith rarely played the drums while away from The Who, he sang on the album, and played the drums on only three of the tracks.
His on-stage aggression, destroying his drum kits while still playing them and wrecking hotel rooms, apart from being an obvious publicity stunt, was fuelled with an over use of drugs and alcohol. This addictive side to his nature flowed into the 70s, playing against the band, his family and friends. His drumming became irregular and unpredictable. He put on weight, so much so as to have him sit in a chair with the backrest toward the camera, to hide his paunch, on the cover of the last The Who album with Keith, the 1978 Who are You.
He died in September 7th, 1978; his death was an accident, by the overuse of the prescribed medicine that was designed to ease him off his drink addiction. He died in the same London apartment as Cass Elliot, from The Mamas and the Papas, who had died there some four years earlier.- Actor

Leo Marini was born on 23 August 1920 in Mendoza, Argentina. He was an actor, known for Sueña, mi amor (1946), Sussi (1988) and Our Lady of the Assassins (2000). He was married to Gloria Solanas and Esther Salandari. He died on 15 October 2000 in Mendoza, Argentina.- Leon Alton enjoyed a fine career on stage, screen, and television starting in the 1920s and lasting until the late 1970s.
In the 1930s he started out on the Broadway stage appearing in various musicals which lasted until the early 1940s. Then like many Broadway actors and dancers, he seemingly drifted his way to Hollywood where he was able to use his talents as a dancer to appear in many party scenes in a suit dancing in some of the most well known films.
Like many dancers though, that was only part of their work as they could not survive on musicals alone and by the mid 1950s musicals started to lose their popularity so he had to find work elsewhere, although he was never unemployed long.
Alton's appearance was ideal for bankers, or distinguished townsman, or whatever was needed. By the late 1950s, he was able to secure some roles in which he received screen credit in shows like Bat Masterson (1958), Tombstone Territory (1957), and Lock Up (1959) all while still appearing at the usual party scenes or the social gatherings.
By the 1960s his career was still going strong as he still found work in the usual places and managed to appear in several well known movies like True Grit (1969), The Cheyenne Social Club (1970), and Airport (1970) and appearing in most of the well known television shows of the time.
His career wound down by the 1970s and while his name will not garner the attention or recognition to film audiences of today, most casting directors could tell you it was a name which should be respected and could be depended upon. - Leslie Bogart was born on 23 August 1952 in Los Angeles, California, USA. (Was business manager for the world renowned Hubbard Street Dance Chicago for 5 years.) (Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning "Three Tall Women", which starred Seldes, did not play the Great White Way but appeared off-Broadway.)
Seldes also has had an extensive career in movies, television and radio, playing everything from Emily Brontë in the 1952 TV movie, Our Sister Emily (1952), to Lucas McCain's dead wife in The Rifleman (1958) episode, The Vision (1960) in 1960, to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in Truman (1995) to Mr. Big's mother on Sex and the City (1998). She was one British character player who seemed to show up everywhere on post-war film, stage and TV, although, more times than not, could barely be glimpsed. A most efficient actress, Marianne Stone's career spanned four decades and was primarily enjoyed in bawdy, ribald comedy playing lowbrow or working-class ladies about town (waitresses, barmaids, clerks, shrews, landladies, secretaries, receptionists, etc.)
Born in King's Cross, London, on August 23, 1922, the dark-haired Marianne was raised by her grandparents who were furniture owners. Her grandmother also ran her own music school and Marianne benefited from that. Winning a music scholarship to the Camden School for Girls, she instead studied at the Royal College of Music, then earned an acting scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1940. Following her graduation she initially made ends meet by working as secretary types in offices, and also found work as an assistant manager for various stock companies. She made her on-stage West End debut in 1945 with a role in "The King Maker" at age 23. A high point for her, as for her stage work, was winning the Gertrude Lawrence Award for "Character Acting".
Marianne moved quickly into films following WWII with minuscule roles in such films as Brighton Rock (1948) and Escape Dangerous (1947). During the latter film's shoot, she met her future husband, actor/producer, Peter Noble, who went on to become a noted London show business columnist, theatre critic and film historian. They married in 1947 and had two daughters Katina Noble and Kara Noble . Of the hundreds of films she appeared in, some "A" but primarily "B" pictures, Marianne was given the chance to shine in only a few.
Producing/directing brothers Roy Boulting and/or John Boulting utilized her presence in several of their films, albeit minor, including Seven Days to Noon (1950), High Treason (1951), Brothers in Law (1957), I'm All Right Jack (1959), Man in a Cocked Hat (1959) and Heavens Above! (1963). Marianne also became a steadfast player (nine total) in the highly popular "Carry On..." slapstick movie series beginning with Carry on Nurse (1959) and finishing a decade and a half later with Carry on Behind (1975). Her most engaging cameo in the series came with her old hag role in Carry on Dick (1974). In what would have been her tenth film in the series, she was deleted from the final print of Carry on Matron (1972).
While Marianne enjoyed a more visible part in Passport to Treason (1956), her most sharply-defined roles on celluloid was arguably that of co-writer Vivian Darkbloom in Lolita (1962) starring James Mason, Shelley Winters, Peter Sellers and nubile Sue Lyon in the title role. Supposedly it was Winters (who wound up staying with Stone during the film's shooting) who helped Marianne get the part. Ironically, one of Stone's last film, Déjà Vu (1985) also happened to feature Winters. A few of the character lady's bawdier 70s film work included Au Pair Girls (1972), the similarly-styled "Carry On" film Bless This House (1972), The Love Ban (1973), Mistress Pamela (1973), The Cherry Picker (1974) and Confessions of a Window Cleaner (1974).
On TV Marianne was seen in such colorful productions as Eccentricities of a Nightingale (1976), Little Lord Fauntleroy (1976) and the mini-series A Man Called Intrepid (1979). Marianne's husband Peter predeceased her (1997) and she herself died on December 21, 2009, at the age of 87. Survived by her children, one of her daughters, Kara Noble appeared with her mother in the film Funny Money (1983).- Second Unit Director or Assistant Director
