- DirectorA.D. CalvoStarsGuy WilsonValentina de AngelisDeborah TwissAfter playing a pagan ritual on a dare, a group of high school students find themselves trapped in an endless cycle of their worst fears.I liked the idea, but the production itself was very mediocre.
- DirectorJohn Erick DowdleStarsStacy ChboskyBen MessmerSamantha RobsonIn an abandoned house in Poughkeepsie, New York murder investigators uncover hundreds of tapes showing decades of a serial killer's work. This had some very creepy bits, but the camera work is very dark and nauseating. Fans of found footage will love it. Others ... not so much.
- DirectorKevin KölschDennis WidmyerStarsAlexandra EssoeAmanda FullerNoah SeganA hopeful young starlet uncovers the ominous origins of the Hollywood elite and enters into a deadly agreement in exchange for fame and fortune.I thought this was a nice throwback to 80's style atmospheric horror. The score was good, though a bit distracting - they took the same melody and changed the pitch/measure throughout the film. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.
- DirectorJimi JonesStarsTraci LordsFrank WhaleyDina MeyerCircumstance brings six childhood friends together to face their past, and a secret they share. In spite of my rating, this is a very creepy little flick that I've watched multiple times. There are massive issues with the narrative - it's almost like the filmmakers want the audience to guess what they're thinking (clues are given, but to what end??). Anyways, it is sufficiently scary to compensate for that.
- DirectorJustin BensonGregg BishopTodd LincolnStarsPatrick LawrieEmilia AresCelia K. MiliusA Los Angeles police chase sends a fame-obsessed man on a wild ride to save his girlfriend from a cybernetic terror.Big disappointment. Stick to the first two.
- DirectorMatt Bettinelli-OlpinDavid BrucknerTyler GillettStarsCalvin Lee ReederLane HughesAdam WingardWhen a group of misfits are hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found footage than they bargained for.Entertaining, particularly the end of the wrap-around and first and last segments.
- DirectorSimon BarrettJason EisenerGareth EvansStarsLawrence Michael LevineKelsy AbbottAdam WingardSearching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his house and find collection of VHS tapes. Viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be dark motives behind the student's disappearance. The best of the series by far.
- DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsDaniel RadcliffeJuno TempleMax MinghellaIn the aftermath of his girlfriend's mysterious death, a young man awakens to find strange horns sprouting from his forehead. This is my least favorite of Aja's movies, but it's still solid. It's not a horror, though - definitely a fantasy/drama.
- DirectorJennifer KentStarsEssie DavisNoah WisemanDaniel HenshallA single mother and her child fall into a deep well of paranoia when an eerie children's book titled "Mister Babadook" manifests in their home.Incredibly atmospheric. The kid's voice grates a bit, but he's in panic mode, so it makes sense. Amazing acting by the female lead.
- DirectorLewis TeagueStarsDee WallaceDaniel Hugh KellyDanny PintauroCujo, a friendly St. Bernard, contracts rabies and conducts a reign of terror on a small American town.Definitely one of those movies that does not hold up from childhood. I'm not sure if it was made for TV, but it felt like it. I also ended up feeling sorry for poor Cujo the whole time (sorry not sorry, I'm a dog lover).
- DirectorJuno MakStarsSiu-Ho ChinKara WaiHee Ching PawA public housing tenement is plunged into a dark storm of supernatural chaos.Beautiful visuals - I won't spoil it, but check the IMDB forum if you aren't familiar with Asian mythology (I had to check it myself). The end makes perfect sense, in that context.
- DirectorDamien LeoneStarsKatie MaguireCatherine A. CallahanMarie MaserA babysitter finds a VHS tape which features various sinister murders performed by a psychotic clown. The clown segments are well-done, with the budget. However, the alien is probably the worst thing I've ever seen, outside of the original Godzilla. Still worth a chance, if you're into anthologies.
- DirectorJoshua ButlerStarsBrooke MarksDenyce LawtonSkyler CalebFrom the producers of SAW, VLOG is a groundbreaking extreme-horror film about a real-life webcam girl whose online murder is not what it seems. The gore is really well-done! You may grow to despise the protagonist, though - I know I did....
- DirectorLeigh JaniakStarsRose LeslieHarry TreadawayBen HuberA newlywed couple finds their lake-country honeymoon descend into chaos after Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of the night. Not bad! The leads interacted like a real couple, and I felt invested in their story.
- DirectorJemaine ClementTaika WaititiStarsJemaine ClementTaika WaititiCori Gonzalez-MacuerViago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are struggling with the mundane aspects of modern life, like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts. This is definitely a comedy, with horror elements. And it is brilliant!
- DirectorDavid BrucknerDan BushJacob GentryStarsAnessa RamseyJustin WelbornScott PoythressA horror film told in three parts, from three perspectives, in which a mysterious transmission that turns people into killers invades every cell phone, radio, and television. This is a very interesting story, told from the pov of three separate characters during the same catastrophic event. The stories wrap around. Each of the segments is directed by a different director, and consequently have a vastly different feel. I really enjoyed it.
- DirectorRick BotaStarsStelian UrianKatheryn WinnickAnna TolputtGamers playing a MMORPG based on the "Hellraiser" films find their lives endangered after being invited to a rave, the host of which intends to show them the truth behind the Cenobite mythos.I don't care what anyone says, this is my favorite after the original (which is one of my top five movies of all time). It's a clever, general horror movie. Just enjoy it at face value.
- DirectorChristopher SmithStarsDanny DyerLaura HarrisTim McInnernyDuring a team-building retreat in the mountains a group of sales representatives are hunted down one by one. This one will surprise you - it starts out as a dark comedy, reminiscent of Shaun of the Dead. Around the halfway point, it turns into a brutal slasher (watch for the bear trap).
- DirectorChristopher SmithStarsFranka PotenteSean HarrisVas BlackwoodTrapped in a London subway station, a woman who's being pursued by a potential attacker heads into the unknown labyrinth of tunnels beneath the city's streets.Just FYI, there is a scene that is extremely disturbing for women to watch ... I still have to look away from the screen, and I've seen the movie several times.
- DirectorChristopher SmithStarsMelissa GeorgeJoshua McIvorJack TaylorFive friends set sail and their yacht is overturned by a strange and sudden storm. A mysterious ship arrives to rescue them, and what happens next cannot be explained.I love this movie. I pick up on new elements and theories every time. Plus there are some good scares.
- DirectorAntti-Jussi AnnilaStarsVille VirtanenTommi EronenViktor KlimenkoAs a 25-year war between Russia and Sweden concludes, two brothers who are part of an effort to outline new border accords become undone by their actions, and their mistreatment of a young woman during their journey.Very interesting, historical horror from Finland. The end is open to interpretation, but not annoyingly so (some movies leave you with more questions than answers).
- DirectorNeil MarshallStarsSean PertweeKevin McKiddEmma CleasbyA routine military exercise turns into a nightmare in the Scottish wilderness.Amusing and bloody - this one doesn't take itself too seriously.
- DirectorZack ParkerStarsAlexa HavinsJoe SwanbergKristina KlebeThe life of three parents who have all shared the loss of a child. Motives are not what they seem and sanity is in short supply in this thriller. This movie is pretty low budget. The effects are not great, and the acting is a bit off for some of the characters. However, it is one of the most brutal films I have ever seen. It managed to shock me, in spite of how jaded I am. Definitely worth the experience (and to support truly independent filmmaking!).
- DirectorJames WatkinsStarsKelly ReillyMichael FassbenderTara EllisRefusing to let anything spoil their romantic weekend break, a young couple confront a gang of loutish youths with terrifyingly brutal consequences. At times, the suspense was so terrible, that I wanted to pause the movie. Very brutal and non-stop, once the violence begins.
- DirectorTyler OliverStarsCarly SchroederCody LinleyBrie Gabrielle"Do you remember me?" A childhood game turns terrifyingly real for a group of high schoolers celebrating graduation. After a hide and seek like game in a cemetery, the players begin to disappear one by one.I wasn't expecting much from this, but it turned out to be pretty solid.
- DirectorJim MickleStarsNick DamiciKim BlairRon BriceA deadly infection breaks out in Manhattan, causing humans to develop into blood-thirsty rat creatures.Neither great nor terrible.
- 20091h 36mUnrated7.1 (2.9K)DirectorAndrew MonumentStarsLance HenriksenLarry CohenJoe DanteAn exploration of the appeal of horror films, with interviews of many legendary directors in the genre.Really amazing documentary. I definitely recommend this to genre fans, film historians, and historical sociologists. Just really well done in the way it ties horror trends in with world events.
- DirectorSean S. CunninghamJoe DanteJohn GaetaStarsJayce BartokHenry GibsonLara HarrisSeven strangers on a Hollywood movie studio tour are trapped inside an infamous House of Horror and forced to tell their most terrifying stories to get out alive. It pains me to say this, because of the directors involved, but this one is just terrible.
- DirectorLuis de la MadridStarsAníta BriemBelén BlancoManu FullolaYears ago, a cruel and merciless nun turned boarding school into a living hell for her students until they could no longer bear the abuse, and she mysteriously disappeared. Now the alumnae are being brutally murdered one by one.Decent supernatural flick, one of those movies filmed in Europe with obviously (non-English speaking) European actors who conveniently all speak English. They do a great job, it just amuses me.
- DirectorMilan TodorovicStarsKristina KlebeDragan MicanovicNatalie BurnTwo young American women go on a Mediterranean vacation and uncover the watery lair of a killer mermaid hidden beneath an abandoned military fortress. What was once a carefree adventure becomes a deadly fight for survival.Half slasher, half creature film. It wasn't my particular cup of tea, but if you enjoy the SyFy channel movies, you will probably love it.
- DirectorJ.S. CardoneStarsLori HeuringScout Taylor-ComptonChloë Grace MoretzKaren, Sarah, and Emma Tunney are all moving to a small town in Pennsylvania where, unknown to them, in 1913, a horrid mine accident trapped dozens of children alive, underground. But there's a problem. They're still alive.Entertaining enough for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
- DirectorZev BermanStarsBrian PresleyJake MuxworthyRider StrongOn a trip to a Mexican border town, three college friends stumble upon a human-sacrifice cult.Surprisingly gory and brutal slasher movie, with a slight supernatural element. Probably one of the best of the After Dark Series.
- DirectorBradford MayStarsAshley JonesCharlie O'ConnellBryan KirkwoodA group of young adults attend an all-night rave only to discover that it's a trap for a satanic cult that requires flesh for bloody sacrifices. After a night of being chased by masked members, the would-be victims find sanctuaryHorrible. I couldn't finish it.
- DirectorMatthew LeutwylerStarsEmmanuelle VaugierLuke GossBeau GarrettAn unknown creature terrorizes an archeological dig in the middle of a desolate New Mexico town.Simply awful.
- DirectorMarvin KrenStarsGerhard LiebmannEdita MalovcicSantosScientists working in the Austrian Alps discover that a glacier is leaking a liquid that appears to be affecting local wildlife. It had me interested for a while, but it just got worse and worse. Might be enjoyable for creature movie fans (I have to admit that I'm not).
- DirectorGeorge BessudoStarsTara GerardVanessa ViolaKelsey WedeenThree sisters and a group of their friends take a trip to the home of the recently deceased grandfather -- who died a particularly grisly death -- to learn more about the promise of an inheritance, only to encounter a family of psychos who have taken up residence in the old man's cabin. The acting and script are awful. I made it halfway through.
- DirectorAlfonso Gomez-RejonStarsAddison TimlinVeronica CartwrightAnthony Anderson65 years after a masked serial killer terrorized the small town of Texarkana, the so-called "moonlight murders" begin again. Is it a copycat or something even more sinister? A lonely high-school girl may be the key to catching him. This movie is practically a unicorn - a remake that's infinitely better than the original. The end is a bit unsatisfactory, but scares and convincing violence makes up for it. If you have to choose, see this one!
- DirectorJon KnautzStarsAaron AshmoreCindy SampsonMeghan HeffernTwo female journalists and a photographer travel to Europe to investigate a series of mysterious disappearances, only to find themselves embroiled in a struggle against a kind of evil they never expected.I went in with low expectations, and was pleasantly surprised. It's a nice take on the "village with a secret" trope.
- DirectorJee-woon KimStarsLee Byung-hunChoi Min-sikJeon Gook-hwanA secret agent exacts revenge on a serial killer through a series of captures and releases. This is more of a thriller, with a ton of violence. It's one of my favorite movies, very tight, with awesome fight scenes and a compelling narrative. Highly recommended.
- DirectorDaniel FarrandsAndrew KaschStarsHeather LangenkampStacey AldenErika AndersonExplore the origins of "dream demon" Freddy Krueger in this award-winning documentary that takes you behind the scenes of the most frightening and imaginative horror franchise in motion picture history!Excellent documentary on the Elm Street movies. It is four hours long (!!), but worth it.
- DirectorJohn MooreStarsLiev SchreiberJulia StilesSeamus Davey-FitzpatrickAn American official realizes that his young son may literally be the Devil incarnate.Don't bother. It's basically a shot-by-shot remake of the original, using the same script. Just watch the original one.
- DirectorPowell RobinsonPatrick Robert YoungStarsRebekah KennedyEllis GreerDan CreedFive strangers - newlywed serial killers, a suicidal, depressed policemen, and two young runaways with a secret - become suspects and potential victims when a masked murderer makes its presence known in an isolated mountain town.Surprisingly well-done - the After Dark horror collection is really hit and miss. I only rated it a 5/10 because it felt very rushed and almost incomplete, but it thoroughly held my interest throughout and the gore was on point.
- DirectorPerci M. IntalanStarsNora AunorJasmine Curtis-SmithBing LoyzagaA woman who cannot remember begins to see ghosts of the past. The final twist here took me aback - overall, I found the protagonist to be flawed but compelling, and tension builds nicely. Acting from some of the supporting characters is distractingly bad, but overall it's solid if predictable.
- DirectorFederico ZampaglioneStarsClaudia GeriniMichela CesconIvan FranekLisa Boeri is a successful businesswoman obsessed with her career - on day. But on night, she is visiting private nightclub Tulpa, club where your sickest, most erotic fantasies come true. It's atmospheric in the way that giallo films are - please don't expect much exposition or coherence. Creepy none-the-less. As an aside, apparently a "tulpa" is a thing (I mean, not a REAL thing, but an occult new-age type thing). I actually looked it up and got lost down the rabbit hole for a couple of hours!
- DirectorCan EvrenolStarsMehmet CerrahogluGörkem KasalErgun KuyucuA squad of unsuspecting cops go through a trapdoor to Hell when they stumble upon a Black Mass in an abandoned building. What an ODD movie. It is extremely gritty, bloody and violent, in a surreal way. It took me a few tries to get through it, as it's extremely non-linear (the type of film you really have to be in the mood for). However, the imagery is sufficiently creepy and outre to make it worth your time. I think this is one of the more effective Lovecraftian efforts. Oh, and I did NOT get the Turkish humor - maybe someone familiar with that culture will find it amusing.
- DirectorPerry BlackshearStarsMacLeod AndrewsEvan DumouchelMargaret Ying DrakeSuspecting that people around him are turning into evil creatures, a troubled man questions whether to protect his only friend from an impending war, or from himself. In spite of the extremely short run time, this film manages to include plenty of in depth characterization and hints of exposition to make it feel complete. I have a background in clinical psychology and work in mental health, and did not feel like my intelligence was being insulted by the portrayal of (is it or isn't it) mental illness, as so often happens in psychological horror films. To say more would spoil it. The budget is low, but it is dialogue versus effects heavy, so you won't notice.
- DirectorDavid MorrisJacqui MorrisStarsHarold EvansRalph NaderMichael SheenBefore the Internet. Before Social Media. Before Breaking News. The victims of Thalidomide had to rely on something even more extraordinary to fight their corner: Investigative Journalism. This is the story of how Harold Evans fought and won the battle of his and many other lives.Full disclosure: this is a documentary, not a horror movie (in spite of the title). It is probably out of place to include it here, but I was so moved by it that I wanted to mention it. Available on Netflix, it discusses in-depth the marketing and societal impact of Thalidomyde, as well as its origins, and the legal battle to compensate its victims. I think we've all heard of "Thalidomyde babies", but I was still absolutely shocked at how it was distributed and created. Highly recommended.
- DirectorTed GeogheganStarsAndrew SensenigBarbara CramptonLarry FessendenIn the cold, wintery fields of New England, a lonely old house wakes up every thirty years - and demands a sacrifice.A throwback to '70's horror that is both frightening and compelling. It took two watchings for me to figure out how characters from the back story "caused" the ending (don't want to spoil it), but it was enjoyable both times.
- DirectorMike FlanaganStarsKatie ParkerCourtney BellDave LevineA woman and her sister begin to link a mysterious tunnel to a series of disappearances, including that of her own husband. One of my favorite indie horrors - the director has gone on to make studio films (Hush and Oculus), that I also enjoyed. You'll have to pay attention for the narrative to tie itself together, but I promise it's worth it.
- DirectorDong-Suk KukStarsSon Ye-jinKim Kap-suLee Kyu-hanDa-eun lives a happy life with her single father. However, their relationship is about to take an unexpected turn because she becomes suspicious that her father might be a monstrous kidnapper. This is a thriller, not a horror movie. You will need to be patient with this film (true of many Korean movies). I enjoyed the many twists and turns. Also true of many Korean movies, the production value is just lovely.
- DirectorKôji ShiraishiStarsJin MurakiRio KannoTomono KugaA documentary filmmaker explores seemingly unrelated paranormal incidents connected by the legend of an ancient demon called the "kagutaba."One of the strangest and most unsettling films I've ever seen - found footage done right, and, in my opinion, this director's strongest work.
- DirectorGreg McLeanStarsJohn JarrattRyan CorrShannon AshlynThe outback once more becomes a place of horror as another unwitting tourist becomes the prey for crazed, serial-killing pig-hunter Mick Taylor. You know, I feel like, as a huge slasher fan, I SHOULD love this movie (and the original), but it just ... does nothing for me. The acting is fine, the violence and gore are on point but it's just ... meh.
- DirectorAlexandre BustilloJulien MauryStarsAnne MarivinThéo FernandezFrancis RenaudThree kids skip school in order to explore an abandoned film studio lot where they catch site of a woman being dragged across the lot by a masked man.I waited for ages for this movie to be available with English subs. It was worth the wait, though I have to admit it is the least strong of these director's films (they also did Livide and L'Interieur). It's a bit slow to get to the "horror," but once it gets there, watch out. I feel like some of the explanation for the killer(s) was lost in translation.
- DirectorJared CohnStarsPaul LoganCostas MandylorBill MoseleyWhen a group of students and their teacher are tortured by a horde of inbreed mutants with an insatiable taste for blood, Navy Seal John Crenshaw becomes their only hope. The good news is, this is not an Americanized version of the excellent French zombie film. The bad news is, the acting was so terrible I only lasted 10 minutes.
- DirectorViet NguyenStarsWalter Michael BostTim ChiouChris DinhA couple of master thieves find themselves trapped within a house they intended to rob, only to discover they've inadvertently wandered into the lair of a deranged serial killer.I went in with zero expectations, as I didn't much care for the short the feature length film is based on. You know what? I was pleasantly surprised. The film manages to balance humor and violence.
- DirectorAdam LevinsStarsCraig ConwayJames CosmoBob DuffA woman returns home to her estranged family after a near-fatal accident, but begins to suspect something is not right.Effective chills, as long as you don't spend any time wondering why the characters behave the way they do / put up with absolutely batsh*t father.
- DirectorEric RedStarsRob MorrowKelly RutherfordTristin MaysWhen a large meteor crashes into a quiet town, pet dogs become mysteriously aggressive - attacking and killing the residents. Now the citizens are forced to fight back against their once beloved companions.Um ... no lol.
- DirectorBo MikkelsenStarsBenjamin EngellTroels LybyMille DinesenA family of four is quarantined in their home as a virulent strand of the flu spreads into town and they are forced to the extreme to escape alive. This is a Danish movie, so its slow-pace is to be expected. Time is spent developing characters, though much of the information ends up being a loose end that is never revisited. The ending is pretty bleak but effective.
- DirectorAdam MasseyStarsChris DiamantopoulosChloe BradtMichael CramA mysterious stalker plagues a reality tv survivalist during his five days alone for a new season of his show in the northern Ontario wilderness; and the figure may not be human.Just watch Predator.
- DirectorEduardo SánchezStarsSamuel DavisDora MadisonRoger EdwardsA group of friends who venture into the remote Texas woods for a party weekend find themselves stalked by Bigfoot.I love sasquatch legends, but, unfortunately, most of the movies are frankly awful. This is a found footage movie (not my favorite style, but since the director also did the Blair Witch Project, at least he has experience), and it manages to be both coherent and scary. If you are an animal lover, you may find the "twist" / motivation for the beast a bit emotional (please tell me I'm not the only one).
- DirectorBrett SimmonsStarsJoey Lauren AdamsElizabeth GilliesPaul IaconoWhen plans for a weekend vacation hit a dead end, a group of close-knit friends find themselves stranded in unfamiliar territory, pursued by a menacing, blood thirsty predator.Enjoyable, if formulaic, monster movie. I believe this is a Chiller movie - much better than SyFy.
- DirectorDavid HollandsStarsBrent BainesDavid HollandsAlex Josselyn-HamiltonPaul is plagued by horrifying visions of a malevolent entity. He discovers that a supernatural force in his home is negatively affecting his housemates. Slowly, this force influences him and his friends to turn against each other, and even murder one another. Paul must discover the entity's true nature before it consumes them all. Is it ghostly? Demonic? Or worse... does it come from within?Typical horror about a group of 25 year old sexy "teens" frenemies who, when faced with a monster/psycho/demon, turn on each other to save their own skins. What sets this apart is that the monster is a giant, man-eating catfish, which I think is pretty cool (if not particularly terrifying). What can I say, sometimes the formula works. This is another Chiller movie.
**For some reason, I'm not seeing the "Beneath" I reviewed - I believe it came out in 2013 and was directed by Larry Fessenden. - DirectorOz PerkinsStarsEmma RobertsKiernan ShipkaLucy BoyntonTwo girls must battle a mysterious evil force when they get left behind at their boarding school over winter break.Wow. I think of fans will enjoy it also. Slow-paced and subtle, but not drawn out or overly-long - a second viewing will reveal more "clues" as to what is happening. I will be keeping an eye on this director.
- DirectorBrian NettoStarsLaurel VailDanny BarclayRob CobuzioA young couple documenting their first pregnancy for a new TV show discover that a malevolent entity has taken control of their unborn child.Brutal ending aside, you'll spend much of this film wondering why the husband patiently watches his wife become "sicker" without intervening. The reality show aspect was on point, which means (imo) it was incredibly annoying.
- DirectorAndy PalmerStarsJere BurnsScottie ThompsonMatt AngelSix of the world's scariest psychopaths escape from a local Asylum and proceed to unleash terror on the unsuspecting crowd of a Halloween Funhouse, whose themed mazes are inspired by their various reigns of terror.Such a good time for genre fans - there are a few comedic moments that miss their mark, but overall this is a tribute to slasher movies for genre fans.
- DirectorDerick MartiniStarsBella HeathcoteLucas TillHelen SlaterA teen angst thriller at a high school gripped by an apparent curse that claims the life of a senior every year. Story follows a senior, Chrissie, who is skeptical, and another, Tracy, who believes that she may be the next victim.Between this and The Canyons, I feel like Bret Easton Ellis has lost his way.
- DirectorFede AlvarezStarsStephen LangJane LevyDylan MinnetteHoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems. While the concept is a bit silly, this is an extremely well-made movie with tons of little details. I was particularly impressed by the use of sound - much of it is natural, and if there was any "jump scare" music, I've forgotten. It makes a nice companion movie with Hush, in my opinion.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsJulianne MooreMia WasikowskaRobert PattinsonA tour into the heart of a Hollywood family chasing celebrity, one another and the relentless ghosts of their pasts. This isn't a traditional horror movie, but it is horrifying in that everything Cronenberg does comes from a place of elemental horror. I found it an excellent pastiche of various Hollywood stereotypes.
- DirectorJason HowdenStarsMilo CawthorneJames Joshua BlakeKimberley CrossmanTwo teenage boys unwittingly summon an ancient evil entity known as The Blind One by delving into black magic while trying to escape their mundane lives.A horror comedy that is destined to become a classic.
- DirectorSteve MinerStarsWilliam KattKay LenzGeorge WendtA troubled writer moves into a haunted house after inheriting it from his aunt. This was one of my "first" horror movies (I was six or seven when it came out), and, as cheesy as it is, it holds up well as a comedy over time. There are a few grisly parts.
- DirectorSebastián SilvaStarsMichael CeraJuno TempleEmily BrowningA naive young tourist's road trip across Chile with friends turns into a waking nightmare.A very unsettling character study on mental illness. Go into it thinking of it as a thriller (though the subject matter is entirely and realistically terrifying).
- DirectorNick RobertsonStarsJack CampbellAnna Lise PhillipsKatie MooreA farmer and his family must fight for survival after a ferocious pack of wild dogs infiltrates their isolated farmhouse. Through a series of frightening and bloody encounters they are forced into survival mode to make it through the night.A scary dog movie for dog lovers.
- DirectorAlain GuiraudieStarsPierre DeladonchampsChristophe PaouPatrick d'AssumçaoSummertime. A cruising spot for men, tucked away on the shores of a lake. Franck falls in love with Michel, an attractive, potent and lethally dangerous man. Franck knows this but wants to live out his passion anyway.A very unsettling and creepy film. Be warned, there is a TON of nudity and unsimulated sex, if that sort of thing bothers you.
- DirectorJeffrey G. HuntStarsSarah HylandSteven KruegerJustin ChonFour friends on their way to Coachella stop off in Los Angeles to tour true-crime occult sites, only to encounter a mysterious young runaway who puts them on a terrifying path to ultimate horror.Ugh. NO.
- DirectorGerald KarglStarsErwin LederRobert Hunger-BühlerSilvia RyderA troubled man gets released from prison and starts taking out his sadistic fantasies on an unsuspecting family living in a secluded house.A very strange and often forgotten cult classic. The filming is of particular interest - lots of unsteady tracking shots.
- DirectorVíctor MatellanoStarsJimmy ShawJack TaylorGeraldine ChaplinYoung journalist Mike gets an assignment to spend one whole evening in a spooky wax museum. Initially believing to be alone inside the place, Mike eventually finds himself being terrorized by the malevolent presence of sadistic cannibal surgeon Dr. Knox.Scary for three minutes, then just terrible.
- DirectorLevan BakhiaStarsSterling KnightSpencer LockeKote TolordavaTrapped standing on an armed landmine, an American tourist is forced to watch helplessly while his girlfriend is terrorized and brutally assaulted.Compelling, tense first act, condescending and improbably second act.
- DirectorUrsula DabrowskyStarsCassandra KaneKerry Ann ReidAlex RafalowiczWhen an abused teenage girl murders her alcoholic mother, the mother's vengeful spirit returns to haunt her. Even in death, the mother is hell bent on denying her daughter her freedom.Raw and difficult to watch in parts, unfortunately the sound and film quality overall suffered from the budget. I think this filmmaker is capable of better.
