- DirectorJames AlgarSamuel ArmstrongFord Beebe Jr.StarsLeopold StokowskiDeems TaylorThe Philadelphia OrchestraA series of eight famous pieces of classical music, conducted by Leopold Stokowski and interpreted in animation by Walt Disney's team of artists.Since hand-drawn animated films are so pretty to look at, and so smooth and flowing, I'd love to see more of them, especially since they're gradually being replaced by computer animation (at least in the West).
Examples: Fantasia, Spirited Away, Watership Down - DirectorJohn LasseterStarsTom HanksTim AllenDon RicklesA cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman action figure supplants him as top toy in a boy's bedroom.Computer animated films are so rich and detailed, with so much room for brilliant color and three-dimensional textures. I think they should keep them coming.
Examples: Toy Story, Shrek, Azur & Asmar: The Princes' Quest - DirectorHenry SelickStarsPaul TerryJoanna LumleyPete PostlethwaiteAn orphan who lives with his two cruel aunts befriends anthropomorphic bugs who live inside a giant peach, and they embark on a journey to New York City.Stop-motion animation has an unusual, life-like quality to it, and there's something magical about knowing the characters on screen are really there, not just images. Furthermore, stop-motion has always been on the fringes of mainstream animation. The more stop-motion features they make, the better.
Examples: James and the Giant Peach, Chicken Run, A Town Called Panic - DirectorLotte ReinigerCarl KochA handsome prince rides a flying horse to faraway lands and embarks on magical adventures, which include befriending a witch, meeting Aladdin, battling demons and falling in love with a princess.Since there are only a handful of features done in cut-out animated style, and it's such an intriguing medium, with a look halfway between hand-drawn and stop-motion animation, I'd love to see a few more of them. Cut-out animated films have a pretty good track record, too, since there aren't but so many of them.
Examples: The Adventures of Prince Achmed, Fantastic Planet, Twice Upon a Time - DirectorJosé Antonio SistiagaA set of words without any meaning, forms the title of the first and only feature film in the history of Spanish cinema made entirely by hand-painting directly on celluloid.Seeing how there's only been one feature ever made by drawing/painting directly onto film, and it's impossible to get a hold of, I would love to see just one other one, or more, if possible. Seeing something like that on the big screen would be mind-blowing.
Examples: Ere erera baleibu icik subua aruaren (AKA Scope, Color, Muda). That's it. There are plenty of shorts, but this one is the only feature. - DirectorAleksandr PetrovStarsGordon PinsentKevin DuhaneyYôji MatsudaAn old fisherman goes out on his fishing trip and makes a huge catch, the biggest of his life.I want to see a feature done in a style that's doesn't have a feature yet: paint-on-glass animation, sand animation, pixilation, or pin-screen animation. A feature in any of these styles would be a major milestone.
Examples (short films):
Paint-On-Glass: The Old Man and the Sea, Black Soul
Sand: The Owl Who Married a Goose, Tracks
Pixilation: A Chairy Tale, The Wizard of Speed and Time
Pinscreen: The Nose, Le Paysagiste (AKA Mindscape) - DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsBob HoskinsChristopher LloydJoanna CassidyWhen a cartoon rabbit is accused of murder, he enlists the help of a burnt out private investigator to prove his innocence.I'm intrigued by films which combine live action and animation, and have characters from the two mediums interacting with each other. You can do so much with it, from Gene Kelly dancing with Jerry the Mouse to King Kong climbing the Empire State Building.
Examples: Who Framed Roger Rabbit, King Kong (1933), Pete's Dragon - DirectorRalph BakshiStarsChristopher GuardWilliam SquireMichael ScholesThe Fellowship of the Ring embark on a journey to destroy the One Ring and end Sauron's reign over Middle-earth.I'm interested in rotoscoping, performance capture, or any technique that traces animation over live-action performances. They create such a surreal effect, with animated characters who look almost human, or human characters who look like cartoons, however you want to think of it.
Examples: The Lord of the Rings, Waking Life, The Polar Express - DirectorMark BakerJacques DrouinTaku FurukawaStarsRyuta KashiwagiKyôko KishidaNoboru MitaniA compilation of short animated clips on winter days in JapanI wish there were some more omnibus animated films, which have different segments using different techniques. Why settle for one style when you can have four or five?
Examples: Winter Days, Peur(s) du noir (AKA Fear(s) of the Dark)
