Dang, that's funny!
Films to make you chuckle, films that make you laugh out loud, films that create laundry issues. We've go 'em all here. Comedy is subjective, so, while you may not find a film listed here as funny, I do; and, it's my list. So, neener-neener!:P
I'm including tv shows; but, mostly those that were consistently funny across their run.

- DirectorLeo McCareyStarsGroucho MarxHarpo MarxChico MarxRufus T. Firefly is named the dictator of bankrupt Freedonia and declares war on neighboring Sylvania over the love of his wealthy backer Mrs. Teasdale, contending with two inept spies who can't seem to keep straight which side they're on.I'm a fan of all of the Marx brothers films, but this is my favorite! Groucho and Harpo's mirror bit, "This Means War!" and all of the rest. Hail Fredonia!
- DirectorVictor HeermanStarsGroucho MarxHarpo MarxChico MarxMayhem and zaniness ensue when a valuable painting goes missing during a party in honor of famed African explorer Captain Spaulding.Hooray for Capt. Spaulding! My second favorite, with Sr Ravelli and the Professor, Mrs. Rittenhouse, bigamy; what's not to love?
- DirectorJim AbrahamsDavid ZuckerJerry ZuckerStarsRobert HaysJulie HagertyLeslie NielsenAfter the crew becomes sick with food poisoning, a neurotic ex-fighter pilot must safely land a commercial airplane full of passengers.Rapid fire gags, satire, absurdity and Mrs. Cleaver speaking jive! The ZAZ team delivers their first bonafide hit and still their funniest movie. Taken (more or less) from the movie Zero Hour! (an airplane disaster film from the 50s) and then thrown into a mixer. There are plenty of misfires, but most of the stuff works.
- DirectorStanley KramerStarsSpencer TracyMilton BerleEthel MermanA group of motorists witnesses a car crash in the California desert, and after the driver's dying words indicate the location of a hidden stash of loot, they turn against each in a race across the state to get to it.Not consistently funny; but, when it is funny, it's hysterical! Probably the greatest collection of comedic actors on the planet, all looking for a treasure, buried under a big "W".
- DirectorNorman Z. McLeodStarsBob HopeJane RussellRobert ArmstrongCalamity Jane is dispatched to find out who's smuggling rifles to the Indians, and winds up married to a hapless correspondence-school dentist as part of her cover.Bob Hope and Jane Russell head west, and silliness abounds. I'm kind of luke warm to a lot of Hope's films; but, this one is great!
- DirectorAlan RafkinStarsDon KnottsBarbara RhoadesJackie CooganA pardoned stagecoach robber, becomes government agent and marries a naive unsuspecting east-coast dentist in order to join a wagon train and catch the smugglers who have been selling guns to the Indians.20 years later, we trade Bob Hope and Jane Russell for Don Knotts and Barbara Rhoades. Not quite as good as the original; but, it makes great use of Don Knott's physical comedy skills. Think of it as Barney Fife's grandfather.
- CreatorSheldon LeonardAaron RubenDanny ThomasStarsAndy GriffithRon HowardDon KnottsWidower Sheriff Andy Taylor, and his son Opie, live with Andy's Aunt Bee in Mayberry, North Carolina. With virtually no crimes to solve, most of Andy's time is spent philosophizing and calming down his cousin Deputy Barney Fife.Great stuff, with a host of wonderful character actors; but, Don Knotts is what made this show great. Unfortunately, they decided to go on after Knotts left and the show dropped significantly in quality.
- CreatorCarl ReinerStarsDick Van DykeMary Tyler MooreRose MarieThe misadventures of a TV writer both at work and at home. One of the most consistently funny shows ever. Start with the comedic genius mind of Carl Reiner, add the physical skills of Dick Van Dyke, the blossoming talent of Mary Tyler Moore, the rapid fire delivery of Mory Amsterdam, and the sharp tongue of Rose Marie and you have classic. Reiner pulled the plug after 5 seasons, so the show never had a chance to dip in quality.
- StarsLucille BallDesi ArnazVivian VanceThe wife of a band leader constantly tries to become a star - in spite of her having no talent, and gets herself (along with her best friend) into the funniest predicaments.Where to begin? Vitameatavegimin, the chocolate factory, Hollywood, Cuban Pete, Lucy and Ethel, Babalu, and the birth of Little Ricky. This show not only stands the test of time, it stays funny every time you watch it.
- CreatorJames L. BrooksAllan BurnsStarsMary Tyler MooreEdward AsnerGavin MacLeodThe lives and trials of a young single woman and her friends, both at work and at home. What started as a vehicle for Mary Tyler Moore grew into an ensemble comedy. Watch as the crew at WJM deliver the strangest news program ever.
- CreatorLarry GelbartStarsAlan AldaWayne RogersLoretta SwitThe staff of an Army hospital in the Korean War find that laughter is the best way to deal with their situation. The tv series eclipses the movie, and wears out its welcome; but, it was one of the funniest shows ever, while also bringing in human drama. 5 O'Clock Charlie, Klinger, Frank Burns' howitzer, Winchester's schemes, and Henry Blake's death. It was a wonderful show.
- DirectorRobert AltmanStarsDonald SutherlandElliott GouldTom SkerrittThe staff of a Korean War field hospital use humor and high jinks to keep their sanity in the face of the horror of war.The movie that launched the tv show, based on the hilarious book. The book was filled with tales of pranks and anti-authority attitudes, during the Korean War; but, the film essentially is a satirical jab at Vietnam, through the lens of Korea. You have to listen closely to catch some of the dialogue (common in most Altman films) and it is uneven in parts; but, it's a lot of fun.
- DirectorElliot SilversteinStarsJane FondaLee MarvinMichael CallanA young schoolteacher turns into an outlaw to avenge her murdered father.Listen to the Ballad of Cat Ballou, outlaw, train robber, and hellcat! See Kid Shelleen, the drunkest gun in the west, Dobie Gillis as a criminal, and Tin Nose. This thing is tons of fun. Jane Fonda is a fine dramatic actress but I always thought she was better at comedy.
- DirectorHenry KosterStarsDanny KayeWalter SlezakBarbara BatesA town's corrupt officials think a fool is actually an investigator in disguise.Danny Kaye stars as a stooge who gets forced into impersonating an Inspector General, causing loads of chaos and wordplay.
- DirectorMelvin FrankNorman PanamaStarsDanny KayeGlynis JohnsBasil RathboneA hapless carnival performer masquerades as the court jester as part of a plot against an evil ruler who has overthrown the rightful King.More wordplay (The pellet with the poison, the chalice from the palace, the flagon with a dragon, etc, etc) and some swashbuckling in this Danny Kaye vehicle. Also see Angela Landsbury as a sexy princess and Glynnis Johns as an even sexier rebel.
- DirectorJohn FordStarsJohn WayneLee MarvinElizabeth AllenIn an ideal society on a picturesque South Seas isle, diverse people live in harmony until an outsider disrupts the balance. The Duke is the straightman, while laughs come from Lee Marvin, Cesar Romero, and Dorothy Lamour. A visitor from Boston throws this island paradise into a tizzy, and the Duke romances a woman half his age.
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsTony CurtisNatalie WoodJack LemmonIn the early 20th century, two rivals, the heroic Leslie and the despicable Professor Fate, engage in an epic automobile race from New York to Paris.Jack Lemon is a scream as Prof. Fate, aided by Peter Falk as Max, while Tony Curtis is the true-blue (or, in this case, blindingly white) hero, in a cross-continent race. Natalie Wood is the intrepid journalist and love interest, while Ross Martin gets to add some villainy, in a brilliant send-up of The Prisoner of Zenda. Stay tuned for the greatest pie fight in movie history.
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsDavid NivenPeter SellersRobert WagnerThe bumbling Inspector Clouseau travels to Rome to catch a notorious jewel thief known as "The Phantom" before he conducts his most daring heist yet: a princess' priceless diamond with one slight imperfection, known as "The Pink Panther".The film that launched Inspector Clouseau. not as slpasticky as later films (and no Cato or Inspector Dreyfuss). This one swipes liberally from Arsene Lupin and Fantomas, but with a more comedic twist.
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsPeter SellersElke SommerGeorge SandersInspector Clouseau falls in love with a murder suspect and tries to clear her name.Second Pink Panther film, from Blake Edwards and Peter Sellers. They shoehorn Clouseau into a stage play farce, but mix in Inspector Dreyfuss and Cato. Great fun.
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsPeter SellersChristopher PlummerCatherine SchellInspector Jacques Clouseau is put on the case when the Pink Panther diamond is stolen, with the Phantom's trademark glove the only clue.My intro to the series and my favorite. My parents took us to see this and I loved it. Clouseau attempts to catch the thief who has stolen the Pink Panther Diamond, while someone tries to kill him. Christopher Plummer is the dashing Sir Charles Lytton, the Phantom, a retired jewel thief. Plummer could have been a great action hero, if he hadn't chosen drama as his specialty. Great fun, with a terrific title sequence.
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsPeter SellersHerbert LomLesley-Anne DownAfter escaping from an insane asylum, the bonkers Charles Dreyfus sends 26 assassins on the trail of the forever bumbling Inspector Clouseau. The last great Pink Panther film, with Dreyfuss out to kill Clouseau, with the help of a doomsday device. However, Clouseau is the ultimate doomsday weapon.
- DirectorRalph NelsonStarsCary GrantLeslie CaronTrevor HowardDuring World War II, a man persuaded to live on an isolated island and spot aircraft finds himself responsible for a teacher and several students, all female.Cary Grant is a crank reprobate who has run away from the world, but found himself stuck in the middle of the war in the Pacific. thanks to a bit of chicanery from Trevor Howard, he is stuck on an island, as a coast watcher. That's all well and good, until Leslie Caron and a group of young girls enter the picture and do more damage than the Japanese. Hilarious stuff, with a bit of romance.
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsCary GrantTony CurtisJoan O'BrienDuring World War II, a commander finds himself stuck with a decrepit (and pink) submarine, a con man executive officer, and a group of army nurses.Cary Grant captains the Sea Tiger a US sub in the middle of the Pacific, where he finds himself stuck with Tony Curtis and a group of Army nurses; and, a pink sub! Great stuff, from Blake Edwards.
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsJames CoburnDick ShawnSergio FantoniIn World War II, a strategic Italian village agrees to surrender to the Allies only if it's allowed to organize a celebratory festival while giving aerial reconnaissance the false impression of fierce ground fighting.Blake Edwards directs Dick Shawn, James Coburn, and Aldo Ray in this farce, where a by-the-book captain is forced to host a festival to arrange an Italian surrender, stage a war to throw off a G-2 major, and defeat the Nazis via catacomb.
- DirectorTed KotcheffStarsJane FondaGeorge SegalEd McMahonWhen a successful, middle-class couple finds themselves unemployed and in debt, they turn to armed robbery in desperation.George Segal and Jane Fonda star as a couple who find themselves on the losing end of the Recession. After failing at other jobs and welfare scams, they take up armed robbery, with hilarious success.
- DirectorRobert Ellis MillerStarsJane FondaJason RobardsDean JonesEllen Gordon, a New York executive's mistress, falls for the executive's young business associate when he is accidentally sent to use the apartment where the executive and Ellen meet every Wednesday.Jane Fonda is the mistress for Jason Robards, but finds herself confronted by Dean Jones and Robard's wife! Not exactly a rollicking comedy, but a pleasant one.
- DirectorJohn LandisStarsJohn BelushiKaren AllenTom HulceAt a 1962 college, Dean Vernon Wormer is determined to expel the entire Delta Tau Chi Fraternity, but those troublemakers have other plans for him.The folks at National Lampoon bring alive their college days, in this tale of Delta House, the worst fraternity on campus. Their battles with authority and conformity will leave you howling; but the final assault on the local parade is the real treat!
- DirectorHarold RamisStarsChevy ChaseBeverly D'AngeloImogene CocaThe Griswold family's cross-country drive to the Walley World theme park proves to be much more arduous than they ever anticipated.National Lampoon strikes again, with the Griswold family and their journey to Wally World. Along the way we meet Cousin Eddie, Christie Brinkley in a Ferrarri, leave a dog tied to the bumper, and take over a theme park. Loads of fun!
- DirectorÉdouard MolinaroStarsUgo TognazziMichel SerraultClaire MaurierThe manager of a Saint-Tropez nightclub featuring drag entertainment, and his star attraction, are a gay couple. Madness ensues when his straight son brings home a fiancée and her ultra-conservative parents to meet them. The original French farce, about a gay couple trying to pass, for the sake of their son. Lots of fun (and more than a few stereotypes) and great charm, lacking from the American remake.
- DirectorMichel HazanaviciusStarsFrançois DamiensJean DujardinKhalid MaadourSecret agent OSS 117 foils Nazis, beds local beauties, and brings peace to the Middle East.Jean Dujardin delivers a new version of the French super spy (from a series of novels and films), who is one part Bond and one part Clouseau. Whether he is arguing with a muzzein who has woken him up, engaging in a chicken fight, or giving out pictures of French president (and failure) Rene Coty, Dujardin is a scream.
- DirectorHoward HawksStarsKatharine HepburnCary GrantCharles RugglesWhile trying to secure a $1 million donation for his museum, a befuddled paleontologist is pursued by a flighty and often irritating heiress and her pet leopard, Baby.Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn star in this screwiest of screwball comedies. An absent-minded professor finds himself trapped in the orbit of a ditzy socialite, and her pet leopard!
- DirectorKen AnnakinStarsStuart WhitmanSarah MilesJames FoxHoping to push Britain to the forefront of aviation, a London publisher organizes an international air race across the English Channel, but must contend with two entrants vying for his daughter, as well as national rivalries and cheating.Extremely funny in parts, but overly long and the lead actor isn't nearly as good as the supporting actors. Terry Thomas is delightfully wicked.
- DirectorDavid SwiftStarsHayley MillsMaureen O'HaraBrian KeithTeenage twin sisters swap places and scheme to reunite their divorced parents. This one is funny in sections, such as some of the camp hijinks, or the trickery played on the prospective step-mother. I still crack up when Brian Kieth complains about Maureen O'Hara being so physical, after she punches him in the eye.
- DirectorIda LupinoStarsRosalind RussellHayley MillsBinnie BarnesTwo high-spirited young students at St. Francis Academy keep things hopping for the challenged Mother Superior and her staff of bewildered Sisters. Some really good stuff here, interspersed with some wonderful human moments, and even some spiritual ones. Scathingly brilliant!
- DirectorVincente MinnelliStarsSpencer TracyJoan BennettElizabeth TaylorThe father of a young woman deals with the emotional pain of her getting married, along with the financial and organizational trouble of arranging the wedding.Spencer Tracy guides us through the horror of planning a wedding. Steve Martin was fine; but, Tracy was gold. Elizabeth Taylor would soon find herself typecast, as a bride (so to speak).
- DirectorHoward HawksStarsCary GrantRosalind RussellRalph BellamyA newspaper editor uses every trick in the book to keep his ace reporter ex-wife from remarrying.Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell star, in this sharp-tongued comedy. This film did a lot to inform the portrayal of Lois Lane, as a reporter.
- DirectorHoward HawksStarsCary GrantGinger RogersMarilyn MonroeA chemist finds his personal and professional life turned upside down when one of his chimpanzees finds the fountain of youth.Cary Grant is a chemist who has discovered a formula for youth, with ridiculous consequences. Marilyn Monroe adds some sex appeal, though Ginger Rogers was no slouch in that department.
- DirectorH.C. PotterStarsCary GrantMyrna LoyMelvyn DouglasA man and his wife decide they can afford to have a house in the country built to their specifications. It's a lot more trouble than they think.Lots of fun, as Cary Grant is the harried new home owner. He contends with an ever escalating building project and a dry mental well, as he has to come up with a new ad-campaign for Wham, a spiced ham product (Spam, spam, spam, spam...)
- DirectorWalter LangStarsClifton WebbMyrna LoyJeanne CrainMyrna Loy plays the wife of the persnickety father of her 12 children, Clifton Webb, who has uniquely humorous methods for dealing with the ordeals such an unwieldy family undoubtedly encounters.Often hilarious, always charming, this film adapts the memoir by two of the Gilbreth children and their eccentric efficiency expert father, sensible mother, and pack of twelve kids. Much better than the Steve Martin version.
- DirectorVictor SchertzingerStarsBing CrosbyBob HopeDorothy LamourTwo playboys try to forget previous romances in Singapore - until they meet a beautiful dancer.I'm gonna throw all of the Hope & Crosby Road films together. The can be corny as heck, make little logical sense; but, dang they're funny!
- DirectorNorman Z. McLeodStarsGroucho MarxChico MarxHarpo MarxQuincy Adams Wagstaff, Huxley University's new president, accidentally hires bumblers Baravelli and Pinky to help his school win the big football game against their rival, Darwin University.Whatever this film is about, I'm ag'in' it! No, seriously, lots of fun, from the Marx Brothers.
- DirectorSam WoodEdmund GouldingStarsGroucho MarxChico MarxHarpo MarxA sly business manager and the wacky friends of two opera singers in Italy help them achieve success in America while humiliating their stuffy and snobbish enemies.More hilarity from the Marx Brothers. Its hard to choose between the schenanigans on the ship or the havoc in the opera house.
- DirectorArchie MayoStarsGroucho MarxHarpo MarxChico MarxThe Marx Brothers are employed at a hotel in postwar Casablanca, where a ring of Nazis is trying to recover a cache of stolen treasure. Not their greatest, but one of my favorites of the later Marx Brothers films. Warner Brothers threatened a lawsuit, which, of course you know, meant war! Groucho put pen to paper and sent off a brillaint letter to Jack Warner, reminding him that the Marxes were "brothers" before the Warners (not to mention the Smiths), and kept up the barrage until jack warner (wisely) surrendered. Seriously, look up the letters; they are a riot!
- DirectorW.S. Van DykeStarsWilliam PowellMyrna LoyMaureen O'SullivanFormer detective Nick Charles and his wealthy wife Nora investigate a murder case, mostly for the fun of it.This is a mystery, but the interplay between William Powell and Myrna Loy would influence numerous pairings, including Moonlighting. This is mostly a placeholder for the entire Thin Man series, as the comedic elements grew as the series continued.
- DirectorJohn FordMervyn LeRoyJoshua LoganStarsHenry FondaJames CagneyWilliam PowellIn the waning days of World War II, the cargo officer of a Navy supply ship chafes at its role far from the action in the Pacific's backwater areas, his frustration rising when its captain denies the crew liberty over petty irritations. There's some really funny stuff here, mixed in with the serious. Great cast who were at home with either.
- DirectorCarl ReinerStarsSteve MartinBernadette PetersCatlin AdamsA simpleminded, sheltered country boy suddenly decides to leave his family home to experience life in the big city, where his naivete is both his best friend and his worst enemy.Carl Reiner and Steve Martin made for a brilliant pairing.
- DirectorCarl ReinerStarsSteve MartinRachel WardAlan LaddFilm noir parody with a detective uncovering a sinister plot. Characters from classic noir films appear as scenes from various movies interjected into the story.Reiner and Martin reteam for this send up of film noir and private eye films, featuring footage from the originals, with Steve Martin inserted. If only the Pink Panther had been this good.
- DirectorCarl ReinerStarsSteve MartinLily TomlinVictoria TennantA dying millionaire has her soul transferred into a younger, willing woman. However, something goes wrong, and she finds herself in her lawyer's body - together with the lawyer.Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin, the top comedians of their day, team up in this brilliant farce of a dead woman inhabiting Martin's body.
- DirectorColin HigginsStarsJane FondaLily TomlinDolly PartonThree female employees of a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot find a way to turn the tables on him.Wonderful film that succeeds as a workplace comedy, a feminist comedy, and just plain fun. All three ladies are excellent and Dabney Coleman is suitably slimy.
- 19641h 35mPG8.4 (519K)97MetascoreDirectorStanley KubrickStarsPeter SellersGeorge C. ScottSterling HaydenAn unhinged American general orders a bombing attack on the Soviet Union, triggering a path to nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically tries to stop.Dark Comedy, with Peter Sellers in three roles, though George C Scott steals the film, in my opinion. So many great lines...
- DirectorJack ArnoldStarsPeter SellersJean SebergWilliam HartnellAn impoverished backward nation declares a war on the United States of America, hoping to lose, but things don't go according to plan.Peter Sellers stars in multiple roles, but mainly as the leader of a band of forest rangers, from the Grand Duchy of Fenwick, who seek to declare war on and surrender to the US, to gain foreign aid. They find themselves in control of a doomsday weapon, which upsets the plan.
- DirectorCharles CrichtonStarsAlec GuinnessStanley HollowaySidney JamesA meek bank clerk who oversees the shipment of bullion joins with an eccentric neighbor to steal gold bars and smuggle them out of the country as miniature Eiffel Towers.Alec Guinness stars as a bank clerk who plots a daring robbery, with an unlikely group of crooks. Then he loses the gold!
- DirectorRobert HamerStarsDennis PriceAlec GuinnessValerie HobsonA distant poor relative of the Duke D'Ascoyne plots to inherit the title by murdering the eight other heirs who stand ahead of him in the line of succession.Alec Guinness plays 8 different roles, in this dark comedy.
- DirectorMel BrooksStarsZero MostelGene WilderDick ShawnA stage-play producer devises a plan to make money by producing a sure-fire flop.Forget the musical, and the film based on the musical based on the film; this is the original. Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel work to produce the biggest flop on Broadway. You can't top "Springtime for Hitler!"
- DirectorMel BrooksStarsCleavon LittleGene WilderSlim PickensIn order to ruin a western town, a corrupt politician appoints a black Sheriff, who promptly becomes his most formidable adversary.Hilarious and daring send up of westerns, with Clevon Little as a black sheriff. Tons of great gags and one liners, and a fantastic cast.
- DirectorMel BrooksStarsGene WilderMadeline KahnMarty FeldmanAn American grandson of the infamous scientist, struggling to prove that his grandfather was not as insane as people believe, is invited to Transylvania, where he discovers the process that reanimates a dead body.Mel brooks and Gene Wilder team up to spoof Frankenstein, or Frahn-ken-steen, if you prefer. Marty Feldman is Igor, I mean Igor, with Cloris Leachman as Frau Bluecher (*SOUND OF HORSESSCREAMING IN TERROR*).
- DirectorArthur HillerStarsGene WilderRichard PryorJill ClayburghOn a long-distance train trip, a man finds romance but also finds himself in danger of being killed, or at least pushed off the train.Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor team up for the first time, in a buddy comedy/mystery-on-a-train. Great stuff and you can actually buy Jill Clayburgh falling for Wilder. The first adult comedy I got to see in a theater.
- DirectorSidney PoitierStarsGene WilderRichard PryorGeorg Stanford BrownSet up and wrongfully accused, two best friends are sent to prison for a crime they didn't commit. However, no prison cell can keep them locked in a cage.Wilder and Pryor reteam as actors who are mistaken for crooks and sentenced to prison for bank robbery. There, they must plot their escape to prove their innocence.
- DirectorArthur HillerStarsRichard PryorGene WilderJoan SeveranceDave is deaf, and Wally is blind. They witness a murder, but it was Dave who was looking at her, and Wally who was listening.Wilder and Pryor team up for the last time. It isn't nearly as consistently good, but it has some really great moments.
- DirectorIvan ReitmanStarsBill MurrayHarvey AtkinKate LynchWacky hijinks of counselors and campers at a less-than-average summer camp.Bill Murray's first starring vehicle finds him as a camp counselor, with the biggest collection of misfits you'll ever find in the woods. It also features a somewhat touching friendship, between Murray and a young man, who is an outsider within the camp.
- DirectorIvan ReitmanStarsBill MurrayJohn CandyHarold RamisTwo friends who are dissatisfied with their jobs decide to join the army for a bit of fun.Bill Murray stars as the world's most unlikely Army recruit (and that includes Jerry Lewis!), along with Harold Ramis and John Candy. That's the fact, Jack!
- DirectorDavid WainStarsJaneane GarofaloDavid Hyde PierceMichael ShowalterSet on the last day of camp, in the hot summer of 1981, a group of counselors try to complete their unfinished business before the day ends.Brilliant send up of "summer camp" pictures, featuring members of The State, plus people like Janeane Garofalo and David Hyde Pierce. The counselors' trip to town is a must-see.
- DirectorKinka UsherStarsBen StillerJaneane GarofaloWilliam H. MacyA group of inept amateur superheroes must try to save the day when a supervillain threatens to destroy a major superhero and the city.Based on supporting characters from Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot comic book series. A group of 5th stringer heroes must fight a criminal mastermind. Tons of fun, no matter what critics say.
- DirectorMel BrooksStarsMel BrooksJohn CandyRick MoranisA star-pilot for hire and his trusty sidekick must come to the rescue of a princess and save Planet Druidia from the clutches of the evil Spaceballs.Mel brooks' spoof of Star wars and sci-fi films. Occasionally disjointed but often laugh-out-loud funny.
- DirectorStephen ChowStarsStephen ChowWei ZhaoYat-Fei WongA young Shaolin follower reunites with his discouraged brothers to form a soccer team using their martial art skills to their advantage.Stephen Chow brilliantly mixes kung fu tropes with a sports theme. Lots of funny stuff here, especially in some of the qualifying matches.
- DirectorStephen ChowStarsStephen ChowWah YuenQiu YuenIn Shanghai, China in the 1940s, a wannabe gangster aspires to join the notorious "Axe Gang" while residents of a housing complex exhibit extraordinary powers in defending their turf.Stephen Chow mixes kung fu films, real criminal gangs, Road Runner cartoons, and musicals into a silly blend.
- CreatorGraham ChapmanEric IdleTerry JonesStarsGraham ChapmanJohn CleeseTerry GilliamThe original surreal sketch comedy showcase for the Monty Python troupe.Brilliant, witty, anarchic, and bizarre are just a few words to describe this milestone in British comedy. There is nary a mis, until the 4th season; and, even then, there's still enough great material to make up for the weaker stuff.
- DirectorTerry GilliamTerry JonesStarsGraham ChapmanJohn CleeseEric IdleKing Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table embark on a surreal, low-budget search for the Holy Grail, encountering many, very silly obstacles. The Python game got back together for their second film (after And Now For Something Completely Different...) and they went to King Arthur for material. The game savages Arthurian legend and gives us a song or two, as well. French taunters, Knights Who Say Nigh!, damsels who must be spanked, Brave Sir Robin, Three Questions, vicious rabbits and Black Knights are just some of the wonders to behold.
- DirectorTerry JonesStarsGraham ChapmanJohn CleeseMichael PalinBorn on the original Christmas in the stable next door to Jesus Christ, Brian of Nazareth spends his life being mistaken for a messiah. The Python gang opened up a whole can of worms here; but, created a more solidly entertaining movie. Brian has the strongest "plot" of any of the films and serves as a whole story. Despite making it clear that Brian is not Jesus (he was born in the stable next door), some religious groups got their knickers in a twist and went after the gang. John Cleese thought it was hilarious; but Michael Palin took the fight seriously, when the pair engaged in a debate with critics on television.
- DirectorTerry JonesStarsJohn CleeseTerry GilliamEric IdleThe comedy team takes a look at life in all of its stages in their own uniquely silly way. This one is more disjointed than the rest; but, Every Sperm Is Sacred, Marching Up And Down The Square, Mr Creosote, and the sight of a gay man, being chased by topless women, as a form of execution, are a few of the great moments. The film is hijacked, early on, by Terry Gilliam's The Crimson Permanent Assurance, which is biting satire of 80s greed and monetarism (and consumerism) and a brilliant send up of pirate films.
- StarsJohn CleesePrunella ScalesAndrew SachsHotel owner Basil Fawlty's incompetence, short fuse, and arrogance form a combination that ensures accidents and trouble are never far away.John Cleese and then-wife Connie Booth create the most deligthfully nasty hotelier ever. There were only 12 episodes but each is a masterpiece. The Germans episode will leave you gasping for air.
- CreatorJeremy LloydDavid CroftStarsMollie SugdenJohn InmanFrank ThorntonThe misadventures of the staff of a retail floor of a major department store. One part workplace comedy, one part social commentary (the class system) and many parts seaside postcard humor, as well as frightfully funny. The staff at Grace Brothers never fail to entertain.
- CreatorRichard CurtisStarsRowan AtkinsonBrian BlessedElspet GrayIn the Middle Ages, Prince Edmund the Black Adder constantly schemes and endeavors to seize the crown from his father and brother. The weakest of all of the shows, but one that grows funnier with each episode. Prince Edmund, the Black Adder, schemes for power and wealth, but is about as bright as a coal mine. Here, Baldrick is the brain at the heart of things. That arrangement would change.
- StarsRowan AtkinsonTony RobinsonTim McInnernyIn the Tudor court of Elizabeth I, Lord Edmund Blackadder strives to win Her Majesty's favour while attempting to avoid a grisly fate should he offend her.Edmund Black Adder is a schemer, in the court of Elizabeth the First and Baldrick is his dim (and disgusting) servant. This one is fantastic from start to finish, with Miranda Richardson as the daffy but dangerous Queen and Stephen Fry as the unctuous Lord Melchett. The late Rik Mayall debuts his wonderful Lord Flashheart here.
- StarsRowan AtkinsonTony RobinsonHugh LaurieIn the Regency era, Mr E. Blackadder serves as butler to the foppish numskull Prince George amidst the fads and crazes of the time.A new Blackadder generation is here, but fortunes have fallen. Blackadder is a servant to the Prince Regent, played by Hugh Laurie, as England's biggest twit. Stephen fry only stops by once, as the Duke of Wellington.
- StarsRowan AtkinsonTony RobinsonStephen FryStuck in the middle of World War I, Captain Edmund Blackadder does his best to escape the banality of the war. This one is a bit different. The series always had historical jokes and some social commentary; but, this one focuses on the stupidity of war, especially in the trenches of WWI. It's great fun, but has a very poignant ending.
- StarsStephen FryHugh LaurieRichard DixonBertram Wooster, a well-intentioned, wealthy layabout, has a habit of getting himself into trouble and it's up to his brilliant valet, Jeeves, to get him out.Stephen fry and Hugh Laurie star as the characters from PG Wodehouse's wonderful farces. Fry is the magnificent brain Jeeves, while Laurie is the dim and shallow Bertie Wooster. Friends and relatives pull the pair into various fixes and it takes Jeeves' intellect to get them out. The series really captures the source material well.
- StarsStephen FryHugh LaurieDeborah NortonComedians Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie perform a variety of comedy skits and the occasional musical number. This sketch comedy series, from Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie mixes wordplay, character-driven pieces, satire, and conceptual pieces into great fun. It's a bit more traditional than Python; but no less brilliant (at times).
- StarsRik MayallAdrian EdmondsonNigel PlanerThe crazy and sometimes surreal comedic adventures of four very different students in Thatcher's Britain. The show that put the Alternative Comedy movement on the map. Mixing the punk aesthetic with the sketch structure, the series brings together the complete post-nuclear family, in the form of four students. People may criticize MTV, but it should be praised for bringing this series to America.
- StarsPatricia RoutledgeClive SwiftGeoffrey HughesA snobbish housewife is determined to climb the social ladder, in spite of her family's working class connections and the constant chagrin of her long suffering husband.A comedy of manners and snobbery. Patricia Routledge is the ultimate social climber, weighed down by her likeable husband, endlessly put-upon neighbors, and poor but endearing family. Great character moments and physical comedy to be found here.
- CreatorJimmy PerryStarsArthur LoweJohn Le MesurierClive DunnA ragtag group of Home Guard volunteers prepare for an imminent German invasion during World War II.Comedy series about the Home Guard, Britain's last line of defense, in WWII; and it would have been the very last line, with this bunch!
