Stephen Moyer Reveals 7 Things You Need to Know About "The Bastard Executioner"7 of 7
Milus Views Punishment as Entertainment.
In the gruesome third episode, the executioner cut off a girl's nose as punishment for her role in a rebellion. Recalls Moyer, "When I was reading the script... as we were getting towards that punishment sequence, I was thinking, 'Oh, maybe we’re going to end every single episode with a death. Maybe that’s what our little trigger is going to be for the audience.' And then I got to the page where they cut her nose off and I was like, 'Oh my God! That’s hideous!' and it hit me that it was almost worse [than death] in a way in Medieval times where we don’t have the benefit of good surgeons... and the fact that Lady Love makes that decision... because she knows in the eyes of the villagers, she has to be seen to be strong and to not allow rebels to mount up against the castle."
According to Moyer, Milus disapproved of the Baroness's decision to spare her life. "My character’s take on it is that it is not enough. It is interesting that my character looks out at the nosing and he sees the crowd being slightly upset that he only got to see a nose cut off. For the villagers, that was their theater."
