What Should've won the Oscar for Best Picture
My personal choices for who should've won the Oscar in the category, the other nominees are ranked in order of preference too, an * denotes the actual winners.
Haven't seen every single nominated film, it will be updated from time to time, just like my other lists.
My ranking is based on the achievement, not the Oscar favourite of a certain year, or the showy, or the overdue or anything else, is just based on its merits

07. BLACKKKLANSMAN
08. BOHEMIAN RAPHSODY
This has to be one of the worst lineups ever, only Roma and The Favourite are worthy to be on the list, both are gonna endure the test of time, ASIB and Green Book are decent, Vice and Blackklansman both have great ideas but fail miserably, Panther is not even the best Marvel movie of the year and Rhapsody is dogshit - DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsLeonardo DiCaprioBrad PittMargot RobbieA faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.01. ONCE UPON A TIME... IN HOLLYWOOD
Right before the last act, this is pretty much perfect despite how different, in a way is, within Tarantino's filmography, a hang out movie that seems to be about nothing, a simple buddy movie, but it has a voyeuristic angle that if look carefully reveals the ugliest side of life creeping into this idyllic moment (here you have a reason for fetishising a feet), is the end of an era, an unabashed nostalgic piece (which should be celebrated instead of the opposite) and unlike any other Tarantino movie reality gets in the way. Cliff Booth needed to die in order to balance things and be a far more cathartic experience. A movie that opens itself in subsequent viewings.
02. LITTLE WOMEN
Only in her second featture and Gerwig goes bigger and bolder than her contemporaries, aware of how easily another Alcott adaptation could be dismissed she makes something that reveals more and more the more times you sat through it. An amplifying vision that goes into parallels within author, heroine and director, this is personal as it can gets but also palatable for any random viewer, the timeline could've been more polished but the way this world is brought to life indicates a vision in full control.
03. PARASITE (OSCAR WINNER) ***
A little too convenient in the way things move forward that only decrement my desire to think about it more deeply as the machinery will start to show, is a carefully high wire act but its observations only go so far to make an engaging, timeless piece. And on a aesthetic level, it all looks way too flat and digital.
04. THE IRISHMAN
I'd love to read it better than watch it, everything has such a predisposed tone and look that reads like homework. A movie about the end of an era, a close chapter for everyone involved, is confident in its execution, keeps entertaining but leans heavily on film history knowledge, and about movies about mafia, the same year a movie like The Traitor weaps the floor with this one.
05. FORD V FERRARI
A classic sausage fest excellently done
06. MARRIAGE STORY
Noah Baumbach, once an exciting voice in independent cinema that evoke the likes of Hal Ashby now does merely competent tv-ish work which lacks tone but compensate with memes.
07. 1917
This sort of movie is becoming more and more common (Gravity, The Revenant), a technical extravaganza that looks and sounds so powerful on the big screen on a first viewing, try getting excited and engaged the second time around...
08. JOKER
Beautifully realised, the sound, the look of it, the way evokes a time in place that is almost visceral, is all wonderful, if only the rest was on the same level, is all so joyless and obvious, hitting its themes so bluntly with a hammer, the joker comes off as an spoiled brat with daddy issues.
09. JOJO RABBIT
Cheap earnestness. Taika deserves jail. - DirectorDarius MarderStarsRiz AhmedOlivia CookePaul RaciA heavy metal drummer's life is turned upside down when he begins to lose his hearing and he must confront a future filled with silence.01. SOUND OF METAL
Even the most forgotten character male driven film produced in the 70s is more engaging than this, which clearly wants to evoke, but the movie has a sort of rejection to be memorable and cinematic, where's the metaphor ? is all about his condition.
02. PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN
It gets dull after a while, it's like if Bergman saw Ms. 45 and wanted to make a deeply profound movie out of it. Goes to interesting places but needed to be more refined in its execution as at one point this becomes an ode to self-immolation
03. MANK
Tedious, so meticulous in its filmmaking that becomes oppressive, the greatest irony is that there's no rosebud to be found here.
04. THE FATHER
Oh boy, we're at that point where a movie about mental illness is done in a Christopher Nolan fashion, where's the people who are so ofended by A Beautiful Mind? here's fresh meat.
05. MINARI
So ordinary, annonymous, been there done that immigrant experience.
06. JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH

When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love.01. THE POWEROF THE DOG
I'll admite that Jane Campion is an acquired taste but within her filmography this might be her most fully realised film, it might not have the rawness of her earlier work but remains a criptic enigma as her best work does, maybe the reason why Sam Elliot or William Friedkin think is a stupid movie, but unlike many others in the line-up, reveals more and more in subsequent viewings.
02. NIGHTMARE ALLEY
If this is the new phase in Del Toro's career, I'm all for it, the monsters are now in human form, showing the ugliest and darkest sides of humanity.
03. DUNE
Does what The Fellowship of the Ring did 20 years ago, works as a set-up for a franchise but also works individually, it has a beginning, middle and end in its own terms, it has muscular filmmaking behind and in front of the camera even though at times feels a bit clinical.
04. LICORICE PIZZA
A sexless, fairytale 70s is kind of questionable, in the second date the couple would be on third base already, that point of view limits the more compelling possibilities the film had to offer, but social media police would find that questionable and uncomfortable, when in fact that should be the point, as it is, the best moments are when there's a satire in place, the scenes involving Sean Penn, Harriet Sansom Harris and Bradley Cooper are the stand out.
05. WEST SIDE STORY
In many ways the cinematic event of the year, Spielberg is on fire here, really put a lot of thought for his first musical, the movement, the languague, the actors, is all fully wonderfully realised, but despite all the arrengement Tony Kushner did, this movie needed to be set in the present and erase or question some actions and motivations.
06. DRIVE MY CAR
There are hints of Eric Rohmer or even Jacques Rivette but it becomes quite obvious in what it says, the metaphor is sort of lost and if you're going to include Uncle Vanya all over your movie, do it with gusto and pleasure, as it's presented here, only touches the surface.
07. KING RICHARD
A romanticized depiction of a egomaniac, entitled bloke done as a tribute by a woman with an even bigger ego who has built a reputation of GOAT by playing against players who'll never challenge her. Nicely acted and edited though.
08. CODA (OSCAR WINNER) ***
How can that selfish, creppy dad (and mom to a degree) can get away with his actions and non-disabled people can't is something that needs to be talked about. Nicely acted (except for that stupid actor playing the professor), wearing its heart on its sleeve, a cause/issue movie for a Hollywood that craves for representation, is going to age bad, or worse, forgotten.
09. BELFAST
Kenneth Branagh saw Roma and Jojo Rabbit and come up with this incompetently made anecdone of a movie based on one of those frame quotes granny has hanging in her kitchen
10. DON'T LOOK UP
An embarrasment, everyone involved with this deserves to spend 5 years in jail and reflect on what they did. - DirectorTodd FieldStarsCate BlanchettNoémie MerlantNina HossSet in the international world of Western classical music, the film centers on Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composer-conductors and the very first female director of a major German orchestra.01. TÁR
A clinical and over the top melodrama about the life of an artist, truly one of the films that captures the now that only reveals more and more in subsequent viewings, the way Lydia watches her old vhs or prefers to stick to the cucumbler salad is endlessly fascinating.
02. TOP GUN: MAVERICK
A crowd-pleaser that also announces itself as one of the last artifacts of its kind, making a case for analogs and legit movie-star power. It might not have a literary screenplay but this is an equivalent to The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance or Ride the High Country which at the time were a closing chapter to the western genre righ before new hybrids will see the light of day. Maverick does the same for old school blockbusters.
03. TRIANGLE OF SADNESS
It's not saying anything new but Östlund leads a beautifully orchestrated spectacle and never lets the audience indifferent, the key to it it's probably how much he stretches and leads to unexpected places familiar scenarios, the actors are crucial to that success for not staying in typical caricatures and creating rounded people.
04. THE FABELMANS
It takes one hour before Spielberg's family dilemmas become interesting despite some weird efforts at telegraphing its points but once Sammy realises on his own what is going to take him to follow his passions the movie becomes a transgressive exercise on the creative process, last scene will become important in the Spielberg catalog, I only wish the movie had an overall better aesthetic
05. WOMEN TALKING
Unimpeachable politics, intellectually stimulating and yet a clear example of how the ideology over aesthetic formula is not right, despite the movie announcing itself as "a work of women imagination" to wish the audience take for granted the fact that illiterate women speak as combative twitter superstars at the heat of #metoo movement circa 2017 is quite a stretch. Still, despite the one-location element, the movie has a fluidity and lyricism to it that makes it very watchable.
06. AVATAR: THE WAY OF THE WATER
Gotta give credit to Big Jim for sticking to his principles and think of global massive consumption and despite being an incredibly formulaic, black and white sort of storytelling the movie takes time to actually explore the artificial world he and his team craft from scratch, from the wonder of the islands to the very visceral murder of a whale (?, forgot the name of thst animal) and finish with a third act which basically is a revision of all Cameron's filmography
07. THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN
Unlike Women Talking this one is stagy as hell with generic postcards landscapes and basically no sound apart from the actors and the clash of mug beers. Despite having timeless themes at the core of the story, the situations becomes increasingly unbelievable and simplify the stubbornness of its male characters. Beautifully acted though.
08. ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT
Yep, it happend. Germans made a very hollywood-inspired monotone war movie despite all the horror that is shown on screen.
09. ELVIS
So these days even someone like Baz Luhrmann is not getting away with his overwhelming/oversaturared artistic vision and going for a generic and dull wikipedia-like bio with an annoying Tom Hanks actually as an entry point as a sort of "unreliable narrator" (more like pathetic)... this is only an indicator that something like Mouling Rouge!, Romeo +Juliet or even The Great Gasby will never be possible in the future... only tammed bios, we're doomed....
