I am protective of this film, because I love it, but this is a very British film, I don't think that it has ever been popular in America, it was poorly marketed and the American poster poorly portrayed Michael Caine's character, in fact it disgusted Caine himself. The remake was disrespectful and it's vastly overrated, it had nothing to do with the British and replaced Brits with Americans, which of coarse may have pleased America, but it annoyed everybody else. I cannot stand remakes, if they have an ounce of respect then that is good, but the remake didn't, The Italian Job is a British classic, it's a slightly patriotic film, but the ending proves that we can laugh at ourselves, it's perhaps difficult to appreciate, for a non Briton.
