Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) were nominated for Best Director, sharing the category with two other first-time nominees, Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) and Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round), and one returning director, David Fincher (Mank). This marks the first time two women have been nominated for Best Director in any single year in Oscars' history. Chloé Zhao also earned the distinction of being the first Chinese woman to be nominated for Best Director.
