August Picks: The Movies and TV You Can't Miss13 of 25
CODA | In Theaters and on Apple TV Plus on Friday, Aug. 13
Plot: As a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) Ruby is the only hearing person in her deaf family. When the family's fishing business is threatened, Ruby finds herself torn between pursuing her love of music and her fear of abandoning her parents.
Our Take: Sian Heder's film about a Child of Deaf Adults navigating life as the only hearing person in her family kicked off Sundance 2021, and the response was pure delight. The funny, feel-good family drama starring Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God), Emilia Jones ("Locke & Key"), and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (Sing Street) made us laugh and cry, and went on to sell to Apple Studios for a record-breaking $25 million. Definitely worth the price of an Apple TV Plus subscription, if you ask us. — Hannah
