The Holdovers
Alexander Payne's sweet return to form is comfort food particulary well-suited for the holidays. Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and newcomer Dominic Sessa deserve awards-season consideration as lonely characters we've all encountered at some point in our lives but perhaps never stopped to get to know. And David Hemingson's script is a timely and frequently funny reminder that empathy is a choice, takes many compassionate forms (including an artfully improvised fib), and is served best when the person you care about is expecting it the least (but needs it the most). Enjoy this movie with loved ones and those you want to reconnect with. — Bret F.
