- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsRyan O'NealMarisa BerensonPatrick MageeAn Irish rogue wins the heart of a rich widow and assumes her dead husband's aristocratic position in 18th-century England. One of the prettiest films ever made, but the pacing in the first half feels quite slow, even if intentional by Kubrick. 2nd half is where this really shines.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsMatthew ModineR. Lee ErmeyVincent D'OnofrioA pragmatic U.S. Marine observes the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War has on his fellow recruits from their brutal boot camp training to the bloody street fighting in Hue.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsSterling HaydenColeen GrayVince EdwardsCrook Johnny Clay assembles a five-man team to plan and execute a daring racetrack robbery.Kubrick's heist film. Similar to Dr. Strangelove, it really deserves a 2nd watch to appreciate the humor and satire throughout. The 1st watch has to spend a lot of effort following all the characters and plot machinations and time jumps, when Kubrick is actually just poking fun at it all.
- DirectorStanley KubrickAnthony MannStarsKirk DouglasLaurence OlivierJean SimmonsThe slave Spartacus survives brutal training as a gladiator and leads a violent revolt against the decadent Roman Republic, as the ambitious Crassus seeks to gain power by crushing the uprising.Kubrick's turn at directing one of the grand historical epics of the 50s and early 60s. Doesn't much feel like a Kubrick film (likely due to studio iinterference on a film of this scale). Still a lot of great cinematography, score, and acting (especially from Douglas, Ustinov, and Laughton). The asides to the Roman politics with Crassus and Caesar really slow down the pace on this already long film though.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsFrank SilveraIrene KaneJamie SmithReady to catch a train to his hometown, a washed-up boxer tells us about the strange and twisty events that happened to him the past couple of days.Great cinematography and locations in 50's NYC (particularly the old Penn Station) but overall the story feels a bit bored.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsFrank SilveraKenneth HarpPaul MazurskyFour soldiers trapped behind enemy lines must confront their fears and desires.Great early start for Kubrick, but still feels like a warmup. Testing the waters for themes he will expand upon later, such as his anti-war sentiment and "fear and desire" being the two most primal emotions (see Dr. Strangelove and Full Metal Jacket, in particular, but littered throughout his filmography).
