- DirectorBong Joon HoStarsSong Kang-hoLee Sun-kyunCho Yeo-jeongGreed and class discrimination threaten the newly-formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan.My last movie theater "shock". I remember coming back home the 1st time I watched it, and I remained silent and unable to do anything other than thinking about the movie for a good hour. And I went to see it 2 more times, and enjoyed it so much. I can't really explain why but it's my top 1 without much hesitation.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsSam NeillLaura DernJeff GoldblumA pragmatic paleontologist touring an almost complete theme park on an island in Central America is tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park's cloned dinosaurs to run loose.A movie from my childhood, that I've seen countless times but always thoroughly enjoy. Maybe because it's Spielberg. But it's not just that. It still works just as well as 30 years ago.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJamie FoxxChristoph WaltzLeonardo DiCaprioWith the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi.I had to have a Tarantino in this list. It could have been Pulp Fiction, but as a western fan, Django is my favorite. Tarantino, an incredible Christoph Waltz, without even mentioning Di Caprio and Jamie Foxx, and an incredible soundtrack remixing many old classic western soundtracks.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJoseph Gordon-LevittElliot PageA thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.Nolan had to be there. The Prestige, TDK, TDKR, it was hard to pick one. Inception made it to this list. Crazy casting, rivetting story, convoluted but not too much (coucou Tenet). And Ken Watanabe.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartGrace KellyWendell CoreyA wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his Greenwich Village courtyard apartment window and, despite the skepticism of his fashion-model girlfriend, becomes convinced one of them has committed murder. Can't do such a list without a Hitchcok movie. Here again, it was a hard choice: Vertigo, the Birds, Rear Window, North by Northwest, To Catch a Thief, etc, etc. But James Stewart and Grace Kelly along with a great setup and story are, in the end, a pretty obvious choice.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsChieko BaishôTakuya KimuraTatsuya GashûinWhen an unconfident young woman is cursed with an old body by a spiteful witch, her only chance of breaking the spell lies with a self-indulgent yet insecure young wizard and his companions in his legged, walking castle.I love Miyazaki. Again, Howl's moving castle is surely the one I enjoy the most, and the one I watched and rewatch the most. There's everything Miyazaki in here. Poetic, fantastic, dark and funny at the same time, with charming characters. I love it.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodViggo MortensenIan McKellenGandalf and Aragorn lead the World of Men against Sauron's army to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring. The epic conclusion to the trilogy. Loved the Fellowship, but this one is packed with epic moments from the beginning to the very end.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodEli WallachLee Van CleefA bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery. There must be at least one spaghetti western in this list. And if there is one, it must be one with Clint Eastwood, by Sergio Leone, and with Ennio Morricone music.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsMiles TellerJ.K. SimmonsMelissa BenoistA promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential. The last time I was left speechless by a movie that I didn't see in movie theater. Impression performance by the 2 main actors, multiple crazy scenes, and not much time for the spectator to breath.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsGeorge ClooneyBrad PittJulia RobertsDanny Ocean and his ten accomplices plan to rob three Las Vegas casinos simultaneously.A crazy casting, a great soundtrack, a few good jokes, and my favorite heist movie ever. Always a pure pleasure to watch Ocean's 11.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittEdward NortonMeat LoafAn insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more. One of the most iconic movies from the 90s, Fincher and Brad Pitt. I may enjoy it a bit less today than I used too, but it's still a very solid pick of this top.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsMorgan FreemanBrad PittKevin SpaceyTwo detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives.Another iconic movie from the 90s, again by Fincher and with Brad. But this time, you can add Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey. I may like it even more than Fight Club even if I've not seen it as many times (yet). But every time I watch it, I'm wondering how I can even doubt that it's part of my favorite movies.
