June Picks: The Movies and TV You Can't Miss25 of 31
Elvis | In Theaters on Friday, June 24
Plot: A look at the life of the legendary rock and roll star, Elvis Presley.
Our Take: As you might expect, Baz Luhrmann’s swoony tribute to Elvis Presley has lofty ambitions. The director seeks to depict the King of Rock and Roll’s life and career as a "cultural opera" (his words) while paying tribute to the gospel and rhythm-and-blues traditions that influenced Elvis since his early days in Tupelo, Mississippi. Also doing heavy lifting is Austin Butler, who beat out Harry Styles for the starring role, which required him to sing, play guitar, and sway those hips. Under layers of makeup and padding, Tom Hanks will portray Elvis’ notorious manager, Colonel Tom Parker. — Arno
