After a stellar 1989, the Hollywood box office of 1990 was expected to be even better – but the film industry got taught some tough lessons.
Browsing the worldwide box office charts for 1989, and many a major studio executive would have been stroking their chin with some degree of comfort. The same old was working. The new things were working. Everything was getting better. The Christmas party was clearly going to be on the impressive side.
What 1989 had proven, after all, was the growing feeling that big stuff worked too. Tim Burton’s Batman had firmly introduced the idea of the huge opening weekend at the box office, and that a movie could become a cultural phenomenon. That patrons would leave the cinema and promptly seek out the soundtrack, the computer game, the book, the T-shirt, the novelty undercrackers.
But it wasn’t just Batman. 1989 proved to Hollywood that, for the most part,...

In the world of action heroes, Jack Reacher is arguably one of the most famous ones. Based on the fan-favorite crime thriller novel series by Lee Child, he has some really extreme characters in his saga, making it all the more interesting than ever before. That said, when it comes to the people who played him in live-action, there are only two names: Tom Cruise and Alan Ritchson.

While Cruise’s version of this action hero was undeniably pretty short, the six feet two inches tall towering Ritchson changed that through his embodiment of the character in the Prime Video series. However, when it comes to the height chart in this hero’s live-action franchise, then it seems that even Ritchson would look dwarfed as the series casts the world’s tallest bodybuilder in the show!
Warning: Contains Spoilers for the Reacher Series Ahead.

Tom Cruise has always been an actor in the spotlight. If there is a role up for grabs, he would take it and turn it into one that would be remembered for a lifetime. He has done movies that have charted the box office like anything and those that bombed in the most unfortunate manner possible. Whatever the movie may be about, no matter how big or small his role may be, Cruise would always give his best.

Glen Powell may be the next ’80s-style movie star, but the actor admitted to recently turning down one of his childhood dream roles in an iconic franchise: “Jurassic Park.”
Powell told The Hollywood Reporter that he opted to not star in the latest franchise reboot for Universal, tentatively titled “Jurassic City.” Scarlett Johansson is leading the feature, with Jonathan Bailey co-starring. Gareth Edwards is directing and the reboot is slated for a July 2, 2025 release.
“‘Jurassic’ is one of my favorite movies. Unlike the big screen adaptation of Lee Child’s acclaimed novel, which saw Tom Cruise playing the titular character, the Amazon adaptation found a book-accurate actor for the series. Considering Jack Reacher’s 6.5 ft height is one of his most recognizable features from the books, Alan Ritchson, who stands at 6.3 ft, successfully embodied the intimidating nature of the character.
But despite being huge in size, in the upcoming season, it seems Jack Reacher is finally set to be humbled by Olivier Richters, who perfectly embodies Lee Child’s idea of Paulie in the books.

The name of a film is a pivotal part of its promotional jigsaw – but coming up with the perfect movie title is a lot easier said than done.
For a little while during the development of the 2023 it’s sort of based on a true story but have a word action horror comedy Cocaine Bear, there was a conversation being had about whether the name would actually stick. A great holding title, sure: but would a major Hollywood studio, Universal in this case, release a film with such a moniker?
The film thus went into development with the underlying expectation it might be called something else, yet when Elizabeth Banks came aboard to direct the picture, one of her conditions was that it didn’t change. As such, Cocaine Bear became, well, Cocaine Bear, and it’s hard to think of it now being called anything else.

Keanu Reeves is known for doing his own stunts to add authenticity to his many films. But at the same time, the actor wouldn’t call what he does ‘stunts.’
Keanu Reeves claimed he hasn’t ‘done any stunt work’ Keanu Reeves | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Reeves might belong in the same category as his contemporary Tom Cruise when it comes to doing movie stunts. But Reeves disagreed with defining what he did as “stunts.” Instead, he preferred to call his sequences “physical acting.”
“I get to do some physical acting. I get involved in some action but they’re not stunts. I flip over guys, I get flipped, I run, I jump, I play,” Reeves said in a 2014 interview with IndieWire.
Even at an older age, Reeves didn’t shy away from doing his physical acting. Reeves quipped that his experience doing film stunts helped him keep up with the physicality of his action roles.

Reacher's back -- unfortunately, he's not alone. Author Lee Child's airport-paperback novel series famously stars a hero that can only be described as a walking, talking tank. Prime Video's "Reacher" series has neatly translated the franchise's popularity on the page to the streaming era, thanks in large part to Alan Ritchson (recently the scene-stealing star of Guy Ritchie's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare") as Jack Reacher. A far cry from Tom Cruise's capable (if not even remotely book-accurate) casting in the two movies, Ritchson embodies all the physicality described in the original books. After two successful seasons throughout the last few years, however, Reacher is due for his biggest challenge yet ... speaking extremely literally, of course.

Glen Powell arrives at lunch through a back door toting a container of bone broth he isn’t eager to look at, much less consume. Hot on a role right now, Glen Powell is set for a reimaging of ‘Heaven Can Wait’ which is in early development at Paramount Pictures.
Based on Harry Segall’s play of the same name, the story made its way to the big screen back in 1978 and starred Warren Beatty. It focused on Beatty’s NFL quarterback who dies prematurely due to an antsy angel and returns to Earth in the body of a recently murdered millionaire. Beatty also co-directed the film with Buck Henry and co-wrote the script with Elaine May.

Oscar winner Stephan Gaghan is set to pen the latest iteration of the story. Powell and Gaghan’s upcoming project is reportedly not a remake and will not centre around a football player as the main character. However, it will retain the concept of a man being taken away before his time.

Tom Cruise famously saved the theaters from the pandemic’s devastating effect in 2022 with his iconic Top Gun: Maverick, making history yet another time. Today, there is no pandemic, and the theaters don’t need saving, but it looks like Brad Pitt is eager to repeat Cruise’s journey, regardless — except this time, down on the ground.
Brad Pitt is going full speed into his new biggest action movie, and so far, it’s looking pretty hot.
Brad Pitt’s Maverick Is an F1 Driver
Top Gun: Maverick was just notoriously brilliant and successful, so the logical conclusion would be to grab another huge A-lister and throw him into the action with the same production team to replicate Cruise’s success.
The first time Donna Langley came to the Cannes Film Festival she was a junior executive working on 1999’s “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.”
“I had just been promoted and I was fortunate enough to get picked to come on this trip to be part of the support team, and it was great! It was very different to this experience, I will say,” Langley said, eliciting a laugh from the well-heeled crowd at the Kering Women in Motion dinner, held at the Place de la Castre high above the Croisette. “[But] we had the time of our lives. Fred Roos, the casting director turned producer who jump-started the career of Jack Nicholson and collaborated often with Francis Ford Coppola, sharing a best picture Oscar with the filmmaker for The Godfather Part II, has died. He was 89.
Roos died Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills, a publicist announced.
It’s part of Hollywood lore that before Harrison Ford became a famous actor, he was laboring as a carpenter to make ends meet. What some might not know is that it was at Roos’ house where Ford was woodworking when the casting director befriended him, eventually pushing him for roles in George Lucas’ American Graffiti (1973) and Star Wars (1977) and Coppola’s The Conversation (1974).
And it was Roos who convinced Lucas — who had been leaning toward Amy Irving — that Carrie Fisher should portray Princess Leia in Star Wars. (Roos did not have an official role on that film.)

In the days leading up to the opening night, Sous les écrans la dèche, a collective of festival workers, announced it would be striking over salary increases and unemployment benefits; as I type, the strikes haven’t materialized, nor has the rumored list of new sexual abuse allegations about men in the French film industry. “Last year, as you know, we had some polemics,” artistic director Thierry Frémaux told the press on the eve of the fest, hinting at the decision to open the 2023 edition with Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, a film that would have been forgotten a lot faster than it was had it...

Following the huge success of Top Gun: Maverick, the filmmakers are now moving ahead with a third installment in the franchise Top Gun 3. While details surrounding the project including its plot remain uncertain, one assurance is the return of the star-studded cast from the 2022 sequel, including Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, and Glen Powell reprising their roles.

As excitement mounts for Top Gun 3, there are certain factors that could pose challenges for the filmmakers, particularly regarding one of the supporting actors, Powell, who has experienced considerable career growth with his subsequent films.
Glen Powell Has Seen A Significant Surge Following Top Gun: Maverick
Glen Powell initially sought to play one of the leading roles in Top Gun: Maverick. While he was disappointed with losing the role of Rooster to Miles Teller, he still made a noticeable presence in the film as Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin.

The world of comic book movies stands largely on the shoulders of devoted actors who have dedicated a large portion of their careers to playing famed roles. From Chris Evans as Captain America to Scarlett Johanson as Black Widow, the list goes on. However, in terms of holding on to that role for the longest time ever, no one comes close to Hugh Jackman and his stint as Wolverine. However, despite a staggering tenure of 24 years and continuing, the actor has not evaded the thought of letting go of his character.

The first season of Reacher became an unexpected hit – the adaptation of Lee Child's novels attracted viewers unfamiliar with the source material, as well as fans of the books who complained that the character previously played by Tom Cruise was far from what Child described.
The second season came out almost two years after the release of the first, and the show was renewed for a third season at the end of 2023. And only recently new information has emerged – a new chapter of Reacher's story will be released in 2025.
It's still a long wait, so here are five TV shows to help you pass the time while you wait for the new season.
1. Banshee, 2013-2016
After creating True Blood for HBO, Alan Ball was trusted with a new production – a thriller about a former criminal who suddenly became the sheriff of the town of Banshee, somewhere in Pennsylvania.

"Minority Report" was shot before the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, but you wouldn't know it. Director Steven Spielberg's 2002 adaptation of Philip K. Dick's 1956 sci-fi novella "The Minority Report" plays almost like a direct response to the post-9/11 War on Terror, in particular the Bush doctrine of preemptive strikes. Set in a version of 2054 where three psychics known as "precogs" are used to locate and arrest people before they commit murder, "Minority Report" wrestles with the concept of free will, in the process raising big questions about due process and profiling. Even the movie's "happy" ending leaves some room for uncertainty about what's to come in the future.
At the same time, "Minority Report" is a blast and a half. Amidst its many weird, creepy moments and noir mystery plot, Spielberg serves up some of the most whiz-bang action scenes he's ever directed. From a bare-knuckle brawl in the...

The best period in recent cinema history? Back when Brendan Fraser was one of the biggest stars, without a doubt. There’s something special about this man’s action movies, and even decades later, rewatching them feels like returning home after a long trip to the cold outside world. Among Fraser’s certified classics, The Mummy is probably the most prominent — thanks to director Stephen Sommers, in particular.
For Sommers, those, too, were the good old days, but there’s one chapter of The Mummy’s story he hates — Alex Kurtzman’s 2017 remake with Tom Cruise. Why?
The Mummy Remake Disrespected Its Origins

If Heat and The Insider are agreed upon as Michael Mann’s all-time best films, what is the director’s most underrated feature to date? Is it Thief? The Keep? Manhunter? Public Enemies? Nah.
