“Fireband” is a new Brit-produced historical drama feature, directed by Karim Aïnouz, recounting the life of ‘Katherine Parr’, the last wife of ‘Henry VIII’, starring Alicia Vikander, Jude Law, Eddie Marsan, Ruby Bentall, Bryony Hannah, Sam Riley, and Maia Jemmett, releasing June 14, 2024 in theaters:
“..in ‘Tudor England’, twice married, accomplished, and educated ‘Katherine Parr’ (Vikander), reluctantly agrees to become the sixth wife of the tyrannical ‘King Henry VIII’ (Law).
“Her consent to marry him carries great personal risk, given that her predecessors are either vanquished, beheaded, or dead. When Henry appoints her as ‘Regent’, the nation’s ruler during his absence when he departs to fight overseas, he lays a dangerous path for her.
“Henry’s courtiers, suspecting she’s sympathetic to radical ‘Protestant’ beliefs that have taken root in the kingdom and are a threat to their power, scheme against her and cast doubts upon her fidelity to the increasingly ailing and paranoid King.

A young man on the run from a mob boss lands an unlikely job in a brutally functional love motel and starts a passionate affair with the manager’s wife
As motel names go, it’s certainly more portentous than “Bates”. But destiny of a sort, shaped by class and money and family abuse, is waiting for the hero and heroine of this movie. This is an erotic noir thriller from Karim Aïnouz; a noir lit mostly by bright sunshine, shot with garish glee by Hélène Louvart. It takes place in a brutally functional love motel near the beach in the north-eastern Brazilian state of Ceará; this is a place from which the couple are fated to be expelled naked, like Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.

Star Wars fans who attended last April's Star Wars Celebration in London were treated to a first look at Skeleton Crew. However, more than a year later, Lucasfilm still hasn't released any of that content online (including the trailer which seemingly confirmed Jude Law is playing a Jedi).
What we do know is that the series takes place around the same time as The Mandalorian, with the expectation being that it will tie into the post-Return of the Jedi era of storytelling. How important it's going to be to the wider franchise and Dave Filoni's eventual crossover movie remains to be seen.
In the meantime, some leaked Skeleton Crew merchandise - first shared on SFFGazette.com - has offered a new look at the show's leads.

If you’ve been keeping up with distribution news recently, there’s been one name you’ll have seen pop up again and again: Vertical.
Since the pandemic, the bottom has fallen out of the film business, with more quality indie packages hitting the marketplace than there are distributors willing to take them on. Paul Dano, his Irma Vep lead Alicia Vikander, Jude Law, Zach Galifianakis, and Tom Sturridge will star in the film, co-written by Assayas and Emmanuel Carrère. Here’s the synopsis: “The story opens in Russia, in the early 1990’s, in the aftermath of the Ussr’s collapse. In a new world that promises freedom and flirts with chaos, a young artist-turned-tv producer, Vadim Baranov, unexpectedly becomes the spin doctor of a promising member of the Fsb (ex-Kgb), Vladimir Putin. Working at the heart of Russian power, Baranov blurs truth with lies,...

Vertical is getting ahead of the crowds as this year’s Cannes market starts wheeling and dealing for Hollywood’s hottest projects and properties. The studio acquired the U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, with Justin Kurzel in the director’s chair. Based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s novel The Silent Brotherhood, The Order stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, and Tye Sheridan.
Here’s a synopsis of Flynn and Gerhardt’s novel courtesy of Library Journal:
Two courageous investigative journalists have created an insider’s account of the “silent brotherhood,” the anti-Jewish, white supremacist underground that, with the justification of some perversely interpreted Christian teachings, conducts an all-out race war. The movement has gathered a group of superpatriots, zealots, malcontents, as well as, rather disturbingly, a large majority of ordinary people. These followers see the underground’s survivalist creed as the way whites can protect...

Exclusive: Vertical has acquired U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, a dramatic thriller directed by Australia’s Justin Kurzel (Macbeth), on which we were first to report. Starring Jude Law (Firebrand), Nicholas Hoult (X-Men franchise), Tye Sheridan (The Card Counter), Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey) and more, the film will will have an exclusive release in theaters nationwide later this year.
Written by Oscar and BAFTA nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard), the film adapts Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s book The Silent Brotherhood, chronicling the escalating crimes of the titular white supremacist domestic terror group. It’s set in 1983, when a series of increasingly violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations, and armored car heists frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. Later this year, a new ‘Star Wars’ show is set to debut on Disney+ called “Skeleton Crew,” which “follows the journey of four kids who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home—and meeting unlikely allies and enemies—will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.”
Now, we have learned that Lucasfilm is taking the show back to the old techniques used in the original Star Wars films, including matte paintings from a retired Ilm (Industrial Light and Magic) painter and even stop-motion animation from Phil Tippett.
For those who don’t know, Phil Tippett helped create a special animation technique called “go motion” to animate the At-at walkers and tauntauns in “The Empire Strikes Back,” and he led the creature shop in “Return of the Jedi.”

Jude Law and Alicia Vikander star as real-life King Henry VIII and his sixth wife, Katherine Parr, in Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand trailer.
The film, based on true 16th-century events, follows Parr’s pursuit of survival in her marriage to the king, after the first five of his wives met untimely ends — divorced, beheaded, died, divorced and beheaded again.
“Katherine’s fate was to change the kingdom, forever,” the trailer’s narrator muses.
“When Henry appoints [Katherine] as Regent, the nation’s ruler during his absence when he departs to fight overseas, he lays a dangerous path for her,” the Firebrand synopsis reads. “Henry’s courtiers, suspecting she’s sympathetic to radical Protestant beliefs that have taken root in the kingdom and are a threat to their power, scheme against her and cast doubts upon her fidelity to the increasingly ailing and paranoid King.”

In a rotten, blood soaked island kingdom, there once was a queen by the name of Katherine Parr. The sixth wife of the vengeful King Henry VIII - and the only one to survive. This true story is about Queen Katherine Parr & Henry VIII's marriage. Adapted from the novel "Queen's Gambit" by Elizabeth Fremantle. With the hope for a future free of tyranny at risk, will Katherine submit to the inevitable for the sake of King and country? Alicia Vikander stars as Katherine Parr, Jude Law as Henry VIII, plus Eddie Marsan, Amr Waked, Sam Riley, Ruby Bentall,...

Lost a bit in last year’s Cannes shuffle was Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand, a period piece starring (who else to put their superb skills into costume dramas) Alicia Vikander and Jude Law. With Roadside Attractions handling distribution, it arrives on June 14 and there’s now a trailer.
We were mixed-positive on Aïnouz’s film out of Cannes. As Savina Petkova said, “Even if Firebrand prefers to stay on the safe side of period cinema about the British monarchy––unlike Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite or Pablo Larraín’s Spencer––Karim Aïnouz doesn’t fail his audiences. Maybe the ones who’d expect something more of his auteur touch would face some disappointment, but the general audience wouldn’t mind an exciting, superbly acted tale of emancipation and revenge.”

Alicia Vikander is unleashing all the fire and the fury as Queen Katherine opposite Jude Law’s King Henry VIII.
The two star in “Firebrand,” which debuted at Cannes 2023 and marked director Karim Aïnouz’s English-language debut film. During war-torn Tudor England, Katherine Parr (Vikander) reluctantly agrees to become the sixth wife of the tyrannical King Henry VIII (Law). Katherine hopes that her fate is different from her predecessors, the queens who were either vanquished, beheaded, or died of non-murder causes.
After their union, Henry appoints Katherine as Regent, the nation’s ruler during his absence when he departs to fight overseas. Yet that power makes Katherine a target as Henry’s courtiers begin suspecting that she’s sympathetic to radical Protestant beliefs. Once Henry returns to England, his courtiers convince him to convict a series of Katherine’s confidantes with treason and burn them at the stake.

Skeleton Crew is arguably one of the more intriguing Star Wars projects heading our way, with very little known about how the series will fit into the wider Galaxy Far, Far Away (we've heard next to nothing since Star Wars Celebration attendees were treated to a brief sneak peek last April).
What we do know is that the Disney+ series focuses on a group of kids who get lost in space, with Jude Law cast in the lead role as a mysterious Jedi. With a confirmed post-Return of the Jedi setting, we also anticipate it somehow tying into The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.
Collider (via SFFGazette.com) recently spoke with director and executive producer Jon Watts and learned that Skeleton Crew is set to launch this holiday season. That presumably means a December launch.
The filmmaker also shared a new description of the series. "It's about a group of kids...

The theme of the 2024 Met Gala was “The Garden of Time” — based on a story by J.G. Ballard – but, really, the theme of all Met Galas always has been: Go big or stay home!
While there have been myriad gorgeous gowns, jewels and natty tuxes over many Met Gala years, what do the most dress-obsessed actually remember? Cher half-naked. Lady Gaga’s change of dress performance art. Billy Porter’s royal entrance in Egyptian armor and entourage. Katy Perry as a chandelier. They all proved: It doesn’t pay to stay staid — even if staid means gorgeous.
So the question comes down to: Does one do good outrageous? Or outrageously bad? Both the bad and the beautiful always get the most ink — sometimes, you can’t tell the difference. With such risky looks, it’s a toss of the coin. If you’re Cher, you can pull off anything. Everyone...
