It’s been a rough few weeks for indies but May is here with a handful of hopefuls looking to rev up the market — from A24’s buzzy I Saw The TV Glow to Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Venice award-winning Evil Does Not Exist. A documentary about Anita Pallenberg featuring Scarlett Johansson hits theaters, with a French animated sci-fi set on Mars, and a Flannery O’Conner biopic by Ethan Hawke.
I Saw The TV Glow is written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun (We’re All Going To The World’s Fair) and produced by Emma Stone under her Fruit Tree Banner. The horror-thriller that gripped Sundance (Deadline review called it a “trippy gut punch”) then SXSW follows a teenager named Owen trying to make it through life in the suburbs. The weirdness starts when his classmate introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show, a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own.

The MCU has a lineup of upcoming movies, despite Marvel Studios facing challenges with recent projects. There’s been discussion about reducing the number of releases, as fans are growing weary of lower-quality shows and movies. However, Spider-Man continues to be a major draw, consistently delivering profits for Marvel, regardless of the medium.
In the MCU specifically, Spider-Man has had three standalone movies, with a fourth one in the works. This was confirmed months ago by producer Amy Pascal. The sequel’s development was paused during the WGA Strike but has since resumed. In this guide, we’ll summarize everything we know about the upcoming Spider-Man movie.
The plot could either explore the Multiverse or take a street-level direction
‘Spider-Man 3’ introduced the Multiversal theme that the rest of the franchise is now exploring, and although the movie was well-received, there’s been speculation that Feige has different plans for the upcoming installment.

MCU has quite a slate of movies coming up, even though Marvel Studios has hit a rough patch with the last couple of projects. There have been talks about releasing fewer projects, as fans are definitely becoming tired of shows and movies of lower quality; still, if one character always managed to drag people to movies, it’s Spider-Man, by far the most profitable Marvel franchise, no matter the product you’re looking at.
So far, talking about the MCU specifically, Spider-Man has three standalone movies and a fourth on the way. This was confirmed several months ago by producer Amy Pascal, who confirmed that the work on the sequel has been ongoing but stopped due to the solidarity with the ongoing WGA Strike at the time. Now that the development of the movie is back on, we decided to summarize everything we know about it in this comprehensive guide.

Ethan Hawke’s Wildcat won’t tell you much about what Flannery O’Connor accomplished. The audience won’t learn about O’Connor’s place in the literary world, the larger culture, or alongside other consciously Catholic fiction writers like Graham Greene. There’s a worthy determination to the way that Wildcat sees O’Connor’s world almost entirely from her mystical, pain-rattled perspective. But by limiting the film’s viewpoint so strictly, Hawke and co-screenwriter Shelby Gaines miss an opportunity to introduce O’Connor to a wider audience.
Hawke’s gnomic biopic opens with a 24-year-old O’Connor (Maya Hawke) trying to make it in New York, circa 1950. Having won a literary prize while attending the prestigious Iowa Writers Workshop, she’s trying to get her first novel, Wise Blood, published. But O’Connor, incapable of small talk or artistic compromise, isn’t a striving literary ingenue working the angles and currying favor.

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio have been locked in to reprise the roles of hero Matt Murdock / Daredevil and villain Wilson Fisk / Kingpin, characters they originally played on the Marvel-inspired Netflix series Daredevil, on the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again ever since Marvel and Disney+ started pushing the show forward. When their supporting cast was being assembled at the end of 2022, it was announced that Sandrine Holt (American Gigolo) had signed on to appear on the show as a love interest to the Fisk – with the word being that she was taking over the role of his wife Vanessa Marianna Fisk, who had previously been played by Ayelet Zurer on the Netflix show. Apparently there had been scheduling issues with Zurer, who said she was “sad to not take part” in the new series… which, at the time, wasn’t meant to line up with the Netflix show perfectly. Jon Bernthal's Punisher is officially back in action. New photos taken from the set of "Daredevil: Born Again" have confirmed the return of the actor's version of Frank Castle, who first appeared on the Marvel Netflix shows nearly a decade ago. But five years after "The Punisher" was canceled by the streaming service, Bernthal is reuniting with his old frenemy Matt Murdock (once again played by Charlie Cox).

The above image sees Bernthal looking very much like the Frank Castle fans of the Netflix shows remember -- bloody, jacked, and ready for vengeance on the streets of New York City. You can also see Bernthal and Cox reunited in costume below. Unfortunately, we don't get a great sense of what's going on in the scenes in question, but it certainly looks like they're getting bloody and kicking ass. But are they on friendly terms this time around?...

In addition to Cox and Bernthal, also set to appear in the series are Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Franklin “Foggy” Nelson), Wilson Bethel (Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Kingpin). The show officially brings all these characters into the proper Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Daredevil has truly been born again, as more set photos from the upcoming miniseries have emerged. But it’s not just Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock that we’re getting a glimpse of, it’s Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle aka Punisher.
In one photo (courtesy of the Daredevil Updates social media account), we see a suited-up Daredevil alongside Castle as the two look off camera to unseen terror. A main draw here might be the shot of Daredevil’s suit, which we previously saw in other set pics but can now see from a different angle and alongside yet another character. More photos also show The Punisher solo, giving a better look at his own get-up, although he does seem a little more reserved than we might be used to of the character. Bernthal first turned up as Castle in the second season of the 2015-2018 Netflix series.

While it may still be in the late development stages at the moment, fans can not help but get excited for the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock in the upcoming MCU series Daredevil: Born Again.
Since it was announced back in 2022 that the star will reprise his role as The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in the MCU, people have just been dying to know more details about it at every step of the series’s creation.

Along with him, it’s now confirmed that his co-stars Deborah Ann Woll and Eldon Henson, including most of the major stars from Netflix’s Defenders universe, will make an appearance. And supporting that claim, Ann Woll recently teased how the reunion of her character Karen Page with Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle might be imminent.

Well, it’s over. Now that the 2024 film awards season is in the rearview mirror, the onslaught of prestige titles hitting digital platforms will come to a temporary halt. Thankfully, this week still brings a pretty decent crop of new releases.
The contender to watch this week: “Drive-Away Dolls“
Ethan Coen‘s second movie without Joel — his first was the documentary “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind,” which is streaming exclusively on Prime Video — has posted modest box-office returns, but the breezy road comedy seems destined for cult-favorite status. Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan play friends who get caught up in a band of maladroit criminals during a road trip down South. Co-written with Tricia Cooke, who edited “The Big Lebowski” and other Coen-brother movies, “Drive-Away Dolls” also features Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon, and newly minted Oscar nominee Colman Domingo. It’s available to rent or purchase on VOD.

Did anybody call for a lawyer?
We can barely contain our excitement about the news that Disney+ is bringing back Daredevil in a bid to reignite the character for Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The glimpses of Matt Murdock that we got on Echo and Spiderman: No Way Home were great, but we have missed this tortured, hopeless do-gooder and his heart of gold.
At the risk of sounding like a superfan (guilty), this Marvel nerd has faithfully watched everything that has led up to this moment, hoping for an eventual Daredevil return.
Now that it's actually happening, there's a lot to cover -- let's dive in.
Where Will Daredevil: Born Again Pick Up?
It's been nearly six years since Daredevil Season 3 was released, and it feels like yesterday.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Animal Kingdom (Thomas Cailley)
In The Animal Kingdom, an Un Certain Regard-selected science-fiction romp from France, human-animal mutations are the new norm. Director Thomas Cailley begins things in media res with a familiar disaster-movie scene: François (Romain Duris) and Émile (Paul Kircher)––father and son, respectively––are stuck in traffic, making chit-chat, when something slowly begins capturing the attention of other drivers. An ambulance across the way begins to rumble. Then a man with a large winged arm bursts out, causing some damage before scurrying down a tunnel. Only mildly ruffled, François exchanges a jaded aphorism with another driver over: “Strange times.” – Rory O. (full review)

Taking over the prosecutor’s office for “Law & Order” in Season 23, the steely actor is set to debut District Attorney Nicholas Baxter on the revived legal drama Thursday, March 14 at 8 p.m. Et. The character introduction comes just two weeks after Sam Waterston stepped down as the legendary Jack McCoy. For his final appearance at NBC in Episode 4 “The Last Dance,” the iconic Da sacrificed his reelection campaign to fight corruption in the mayor’s office. Spider-Man is making a comeback in the cinematic neighborhood soon. This time around, though, he is coming in animation, but the excitement about it is no less. Fans were convinced that Marvel’s 2024 would be a barren desert as the highly anticipated movie Deadpool 3 was the only project scheduled to be released, but luckily that does seem to be the case.
Tom Holland as Spider-Man
Marvel Animation’s Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man must be ringing a bell in the minds of those fans, who were eagerly waiting for the web-slinger to have his animated show. With Disney releasing the logo for the show, fans might wonder about the possibility of any original MCU character appearing in the show, especially since Tom Holland is reportedly not a part of the project.
The one Marvel character that could have made an appearance in the show is Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man.

While he’s obviously famous for his celebrated acting career, Ethan Hawke is still a notable writer/director, as well as an author, stage actor, and more. Having just finished up the docuseries, “The Last Movie Stars,” in 2022, Hawke’s latest narrative directorial effort is “Wildcat,” based on the short stories of writer Flannery O’Connor. The period film set during the 1950s stars his daughter Maya Hawke (“Asteroid City”) as O’Connor with a supporting cast that consists of Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Steve Zahn (“8-Bit Christmas”), Vincent D’Onofrio (“Full Metal Jacket”), Cooper Hoffman (“Licorice Pizza”), Rafael Casal (“Blindspotting”), Phillip Ettinger, and Levon Hawke.

Maya Hawke stars as Flannery O’Connor, the celebrated author of Southern Gothic-inspired short stories, novels, and essays, in Wildcat.
The film, directed and co-written by Hawke’s father, Ethan Hawke, follows a 24 year-old Flannery in 1950s Georgia as she deals with a lupus diagnosis. She returns home to her mother, Regina (Laura Linney), and begins writing some of her most imaginative stories as she attempts to heal her relationship with her mom.
Throughout, the film offers fictionalized adaptations of several of Flannery’s most beloved short stories, which include cast members Rafael Casal, Cooper Hoffman, and Steve Zahn. Also appearing in Wildcat are Liam Neeson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Alessandro Nivola, Christine Dye, Willa Fitzgerald, and Ethan Hawke’s son, Levon Hawke. Watch the trailer for Wildcat below.

Coming off his stellar Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward documentary The Last Movie Stars, Ethan Hawke’s latest foray behind the camera is on the narrative side with the Flannery O’Connor biopic Wildcat. Marking a family affair, the film stars Maya Hawke as the celebrated Southern Gothic writer Flannery O’Connor’s mind as she ponders the great questions of her writing. Impressed by his work on Cop Car, Marvel brought Jon Watts to helm Spider-Man: Homecoming, starring Tom Holland. Following its success, the director was brought back to craft the next two sequels in the franchise with a much bigger scope than the first one, which was fairly a street-level film. But being a street-level film was one of Homecoming‘s biggest charms, as it helped the movie differentiate itself from other MCU IPs, and Marvel is reportedly looking to go that route again.
However, per reports, Sony was against this idea and wanted the fourth part to follow in No Way Home‘s footsteps by bringing Watts back, but it appears, it isn’t going in Sony’s favor this time.

There’s an infamous anecdote about a scientist who was presenting a lecture on how earth and other celestial bodies orbit around larger bodies. When he finished the lecture, an old lady supposedly stood up and claimed that the scientist was wrong because the world wasn’t floating in outer space but was in fact supported on the back of a giant turtle. When asked what was supporting the turtle, the old lady replied: “it’s turtles all the way down.”

With the release of Echo in January, fans of the MCU are all but convinced that their favorite street-level vigilantes are canon in teh MCU, thanks to Daredevil’s inclusion in the show. David Tennant’s Killgrave, therefore, is also canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he is allegedly not opposed to returning to the role.

Being physically a part of Season 1 while appearing as a figment of Jessica’s imagination after his demise, Tenant has revealed that there might be a way to bring his version of Killgrave back to the screen. Now, with the hows entrenched in the MCU, and the street-level vigilantes having found their “Thanos” in Wilson Fisk, Tennant’s Killgrave would make an excellent secondary villain, while also being a return to form for Jessica Jones.

Marvel has officially confirmed the inclusion of the Netflix Marvel series in the Sacred Timeline of the franchise. Until now, the series Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist were developed separately from the MCU canon and had only passing references to the movies. But with the shows being placed in the official timeline order on Disney Plus, they have been officially confirmed to be part of the MCU canon.
However, the fact that the Netflix Marvel shows were separate from the films had given the studio the freedom to allow some actors to crossover from the show to the films. But, with the shows being canonized, the portrayal of certain characters may be confusing. One of the biggest examples of this flaw is the casting of Mahershala Ali, who portrayed Cottonmouth in Luke Cage and will be seen as Blade in the MCU.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently immersed in its ‘Multiverse Saga,’ a narrative arc spanning Phase Four, Phase Five, and Phase Six, which began with ‘WandaVision’ and is slated to culminate with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ This saga is defined by its exploration of the Multiverse concept, which serves as a central theme across various projects.
However, while the Multiverse plays a significant role in the overarching narrative, its prominence varies among individual projects based on the focus of the superheroes involved. For instance, ‘Echo’ and the upcoming ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ are expected to center more on street-level heroes and villains, with minimal or no connection to the Multiverse.
The inclusion of Daredevil in the rumored ‘Spider-Man 4,’ initially suggested a continuation of the street-level narrative for Spider-Man, which garnered a positive reception from fans. Yet, the Multiverse theme was already prominently featured in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ leaving fans curious...
