“You have made one of the most brilliant science fiction films I’ve ever seen,” Steven Spielberg says to Denis Villeneuve. It’s fair to say he quite liked Dune: Part Two.
Steven Spielberg really liked Dune: Part Two. So much so that, in a podcast for the Directors Guild of America – simply called Director’s Cut – Spielberg said to its maker, Denis Villeneuve, “It’s an honour for me to sit here and talk to you.”

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two debuted in theaters earlier this month, receiving praise from critics and movie-goers alike. Now, joining the ranks of its fans, is none other than Steven Spielberg, who called the movie “one of the most brilliant science-fiction films [he’s] ever seen.”
The comments came in a conversation between Spielberg and Villeneuve at the DGA theater in Los Angeles, which has since been published as an episode of The Directors Guild of America’s podcast, The Director’s Cut. Speaking about the sequel — which follows-up 2021’s Dune — Spileberg commended Villeneuve’s eye for world-building.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is getting Steven Spielberg’s seal of approval. The Oscar-winning director is praising not only the film, but the Canadian filmmakers vision and creativity.
Speaking to Villeneuve for DGA’s The Director’s Cut podcast, Spielberg started by putting him in a list of directors he calls “builders of worlds.”
“Let me start by saying there are filmmakers who are the builders of worlds. It’s not a long list and we know who a lot of them are,” Spielberg said. “Starting with [Georges] Méliès and Disney and Kubrick, George Lucas. Ray Harryhausen I include in that list. Fellini built his own worlds. Tim Burton. Obviously Wes Anderson, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, Guillermo del Toro. The list goes on but it’s not that long of a list, and I deeply, fervently believe that you are one of its newest members.

The duo appeared together on DGA’s Director’s Cut podcast, where the filmmaker behind sci-fi classics Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. The Extra Terrestrial heaped praise on the Dune and Arrival director.
“This is truly a visual epic, and it’s also filled with deeply, deeply drawn characters,” Spielberg said. “Yet the dialogue is very sparse when you look at it proportionately to the running time of the film. It’s such cinema. The shots are so painterly, yet there’s not an angle or single setup that’s pretentious … you have made one of the most brilliant science fiction films I have ever seen.”

Denis Villeneueve reveals that he attempted to make even the more fantastical elements of the story feel plausible in Dune: Part Two. The director clarifies that Paul doesn't have "magic power", he is just very sensitive to spice. Villeneuve has proven himself adept at making dense science fiction feel grounded and real through stunning visuals and a focus on character.
Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve addresses his more pragmatic approach to Frank Herbert's source material. Released earlier this month, Villeneuve's sequel picks up after the end of 2021's Dune, following Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides as he grapples with a prophecy that paints him as a messiah figure for the Fremen. The film has been widely hailed as a major success, with critics and audiences alike responding to the way in which Villeneuve has used his eye for science-fiction to bring the world of Herbert's 1965 novel to life.

The first trailer for Alien: Romulus paints Cailee Spaeny's Rain as a protagonist not unlike Sigourney Weaver's Ripley. Spaeny says she "could never be" Weaver, but she tried to make her character as compelling as possible. If Alien: Romulus is a hit, it could pave the way for Rain to become a character that persists across multiple installments.
Alien: Romulus star Cailee Spaeny addresses the comparisons between her new character and Sigourney Weaver's Ripley after the film's trailer dropped. Directed by Fede Álvarez, the latest installment in the long-running Alien franchise serves as a soft reboot of sorts, following a young crew as they encounter a deadly xenomorph. As teased in the latest trailer, the upcoming film features a number of elements that are reminiscent of Ridley Scott's 1979 franchise-starter, the film responsible for first introducing Weaver's Ripley.

Brad Pitt is one of the pioneers of modern cinema as far as Hollywood and acting are concerned. Having started as a nobody and a background actor with no credits in many movies, Pitt has come a long way. While his looks and physicality seem to have certainly played a hand in his popularity, it is really his acting genius that has solidified him as an A-list Hollywood actor.

Alien: Romulus is addressing design problems of prequels by returning to Alien's original aesthetic. Fede Álvarez's movie maintains consistency with the original 1979 film, helping unify the franchise. Romulus's design suggests a departure from Scott's separate vision, promising a return to the Alien universe.
Ridley Scott's Alien prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant proved divisive for a number of reasons, but the first look at Fede Álvarez's Alien: Romulus suggests the new movie is fixing at least one major complaint. In many ways, Scott's project was doomed from the start. By promising to explore the origins of one of cinema's most enigmatic and powerful monsters, the veteran filmmaker was almost guaranteed to disappoint somebody. Yet while the stories created more problems than they solved, the two prequel films also fell short in other, less subjective ways.
Both Prometheus and Covenant take place before Alien in the overall franchise timeline.

Fede Alvarez brings a refreshing change by using practical effects in Alien: Romulus for authenticity and immersion. Legendary director Ridley Scott approves Alvarez's approach, emphasizing the minimal role of CGI for an immersive cinematic experience.

Book-to-film adaptions are always a hit or miss. With this year's highly anticipated Dune: Part Two rising to the challenge, it's a must to remember the competitive standard that was set for the sci-fi genre decades ago. Blade Runner (1982), one of the greatest science fiction movies to ever grace the silver screen, brought to life Philip K. Dick's 1968 dystopian novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Directed by atmospheric director Ridley Scott, Blade Runner marked the start of a grand era of sci-fi in Hollywood and inspired generations of films, TV shows, anime, and games to follow in its footsteps.

Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, while considered a masterpiece, sparked a trend of revisiting sci-fi films, which has negatively impacted his reputation. Blade Runner has multiple cuts, with the Final Cut being considered the ultimate version where Scott had complete creative control. While the constant tinkering with Blade Runner improved the film, Scott's return to the Alien franchise with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant was a mistake.
While 1982's Blade Runner is a classic, it nonetheless set a trend for Ridley Scott's sci-fi movies that has arguably harmed his career. Scott is considered one of the most influential filmmakers of all time, and Blade Runner could be regarded as his magnum opus. However, with the film, Scott set a precedent that had an unfortunate effect on another entry in the director’s lengthy back catalog.

Alien: Romulus director ensures R-rating, avoiding PG-13 mistake of Alien Vs Predator, per franchise tradition of gory horror. Fede Alvarez's upcoming reboot approved by Ridley Scott for a gritty, disgusting storyline between Alien and Aliens in franchise timeline. Alien: Romulus expected to maintain R-rating like predecessors, staying true to tradition of gruesome gore and adult-oriented horror.

Gladiator's portrayal of the Praetorian Guard's betrayal is historically accurate, reflecting their tendency to turn against their emperors. Quintus' influence over the Praetorians in the movie's ending highlights their loyalty to personal relationships rather than to the emperor. Despite historical inaccuracies, Gladiator offers insight into the Praetorian Guard's complex and often treacherous role in Roman history.
Ridley Scott's Gladiator culminates in an epic battle between Maximus and Commodus in the arena, with the former general eventually triumphing – yet his victory is only possible after a surprising betrayal with real historical roots. Despite vividly bringing the world of Ancient Rome to life, Gladiator plays fast and loose with history. Many characters are created specifically for the film, while others are distorted reflections of their historical counterparts. Despite this, however, the movie does provide some accurate insights – especially in its dramatic ending.

Alien: Romulus will star Cailee Spaeny in the lead role, and she's looking to honor original star Sigourney Weaver with the new movie.
In an interview with Total Film (per GamesRadar), Spaeny commented on coming into the franchise as such a big fan of Alien. She addressed a moment in the trailer that sees her character, Raines, stepping out of an elevator with a Pulse rifle in a moment that's reminiscent of Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley. Spaeny said she could never "be" Weaver, but inspired by the franchise's original star, she gave her all to the role that she plays in Alien: Romulus.

Music movies are having a moment — if, indeed, they ever stopped having one. Take the pop-music biopic. There are times, like right now, when it surges in popularity, yet the form has never gone out of style. And music documentaries, a staple of the indie-film world, have only proliferated during the streaming era. This means that they have to compete for visibility, but a ton of them are getting made and (mostly) getting seen. They’ve become a happy epidemic.
A few, like “Amy” or “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?,” are popular and vital enough to have carved out a place in the culture — and, in the case of both those films, to have inspired the creation of a biopic. I have it on good authority that when you’re trying to put together a music documentary, the prospect of it spawning a biopic can be a key selling point.

In the vast expanse of the sci-fi horror universe, few franchises hold as revered a spot as Ridley Scott's Alien. With the announcement of Alien: Romulus, anticipation has been building around how the new installment plans to invigorate the iconic series. At the heart of this resurgence is Cailee Spaeny, the up-and-coming star of Priscilla, whose enthusiasm for the project is palpable and infectious. Spaeny has been speaking with Total Film about what's to come in Romulus in the wake of the first trailer's release earlier this week.

Science fiction continues to be one of the most popular movie genres as it has birthed everything from thought-provoking journeys to purely entertaining blockbusters. However, some of the best films to come out of the genre focus heavily on the science part. This is referred to as "hard science fiction." Hard sci-fi emphasizes elements like scientific accuracy and careful attention to the technology used in the narrative.
Over the years, audiences have witnessed more and more intelligent sci-fi films that successfully mix intriguing ideas with stunning visuals to keep them hooked. Directors like Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, and Ridley Scott are just a few names that come to mind when creating sci-fi stories that prioritize science and logic. As a result, these films in the hard sci-fi subgenre become stories that people will remember for a long time, including Arrival, Interstellar, and The Martian.

Napoleon's divorce from Empress Joséphine was driven by their inability to produce a legitimate heir, leading him to marry Marie-Louise and have a son, Napoleon II. Joséphine had two children from her previous marriage, Eugène and Hortense, who played significant roles in Napoleon's life and later history. Although the exact number is unknown, Napoleon had numerous illegitimate children with his mistresses, including Charles Léon Denuelle and Alexandre Colonna Walewski.
One of the primary points of conflict between Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress Joséphine was their inability to produce a legitimate heir, and while Napoleon did show his legitimate son and stepchildren, it left out details about Napoleon's other children. Napoleon's tumultuous and crucial relationship with Joséphine de Beauharnais (later titled Empress Joséphine following her marriage to Napoleon) is at the heart of Ridley Scott's movie. No one can hear your scream in space, but in a packed theater? Everyone can, thanks to the Alien franchise. The Alien movies have made audiences radiate fear since Ridley Scott first brought a terrifying Xenomorph to life on the silver screen in 1979. Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez is not abandoning Prometheus and Covenant in his new addition to the franchise, honoring their significance. Despite controversies surrounding Prometheus and Covenant, Álvarez's approach to Romulus includes deep connections to the prequels, respecting their place. Alien: Romulus stands as a largely standalone story, with metaphorical ties to previous movies and a focus on a new group facing Xenomorphs.
Although Ridley Scott's Alien prequel story has been sidelined, Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez has confirmed that Prometheus and Covenant are not being completely abandoned in his new addition to the franchise. Since the 1979 original, Alien has undergone multiple lore revisions and developments. Some, such as the arrival of the Queen in Aliens, have enhanced the mythology around the saga's central monster, whereas others have fallen flat. However, while Covenant and Prometheus both made controversial changes to the story, Álvarez has indicated that they won't be ignored in his movie.

Christian Bale is known for his insane transformations and some of the most critically acclaimed roles in Hollywood. The 50-year-old Oscar winner has worked with some of the greatest directors and delivered some critically and commercially successful flicks. However, he also has a fair share of flop films in his career. Interestingly, many of these projects even came after his highly successful, The Dark Knight Trilogy.

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy is one of the most significant works in Christian Bale’s filmography. His incredible performance as the Caped Crusader in Nolan’s gritty world elevated the trilogy’s quality and made Bale a household name. Surprisingly, even that stardom could not save the American Psycho fame from some of the biggest flops in his career.

The noir genre has been booming in popularity since the 1940s, and it's easy to see why. Ever since Humphrey Bogart made his debut as the snarky detective Sam Spade in John Huston’s classic crime thriller The Maltese Falcon, audiences have been enamored by hard-boiled mysteries that peek into the seedy underbelly of society. Often using cynicism and intricately-laden MacGuffins to comment on the era of their release, great noir films have evolved and intertwined with many other genres. The most famous may in fact be Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic Blade Runner, which retrofitted the structure of a classic “sleuth story,” yet set it in a sprawling urban metroplex that mirrored what current society could look like in a few generations. While it was largely underseen during its initial release window, the science fiction mystery film Reminiscence is a futuristic noir that may be far from Blade Runner's iconic status,...

Alien: Romulus isn't going to be a CGI-fest.
Speaking about the upcoming film with THR, director Fede Álvarez commented on the movie's special effects. He shared how he'd brought in the same team who developed the Xenomorphs for James Cameron's Aliens to help craft the new creatures for Alien: Romulus. The filmmaker also addressed how spaceships were built and miniatures were used for the sets. That's not to say that there's no VFX in the film at all, but Álvarez suggested that it's only used as sparingly as possible, as the idea is for the audience to never pick up on it, taking them out of the movie.

The use of special effects is quite common in movies nowadays but director Fede Alvarez is making sure everything feels authentic in his 2024 movie, Alien: Romulus. In one of his recent interviews, the director explained that he preferred to create the movie without green screens. The film serves as a standalone interquel set between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). Unlike Romulus, Alien and Aliens both relied on CGI.

Gladiator 2 will feature a new protagonist, Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, and a fresh new cast of characters, giving it a unique feel. Hans Zimmer will not be returning to compose Gladiator 2, but Harry Gregson-Williams is set to bring his own flair to the score. There will be another disappointing difference in Gladiator 2, but this change makes perfect sense, given Russel Crowe's absence from the sequel movie. Xenomorph label for Alien creatures emerged 7 years after iconic film, largely capitalized on for marketing value. Misnomer "Xenomorph" originated as Lt. Gorman's mention in Aliens, officially dubbed ambiguous alien life form. Latin names for Alien creatures define behavior more accurately than Xenomorph, used in later film scripts.

Consider this a rite of passage for the "Alien" franchise. Any time a new movie is set to debut, the most pressing question on the minds of fans typically manifests around how the Xenomorph design will look this time around. Every movie has brought its own twist on the formula of H.R. Giger's classic original conception, either opting for a more animalistic look (as in "Alien 3") or more like an unholy mash-up prototype (on display in both "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant") that mostly only hints at the well-known creature from the original. But arguably no director added to the lore and made it their own quite like James Cameron did with "Aliens," introducing the concept of the Xenomorph queen and reimagining the species as an insect-like hive.

Alien: Romulus is a return to the horror tone of the original Alien film, focusing on survival against unknown threats. The teaser trailer hints at a more simplistic and gritty approach, distancing from the complex narrative of Prometheus. By prioritizing character development and vulnerability, Alien: Romulus aims to recapture what made the first Alien movie successful.

Alien: Romulus promises to deliver the sheer horror missing not only from the first Alien film but also in subsequent installments in the series.
Ridley Scott's Alien achieved what few films only attempted in a decade saturated by slasher flicks. The period birthed numerous exceptional horror movies like Carrie and Halloween, but Scott's 1979 film stood out with its horrific premise: combining claustrophobia and astrophobia with a sci-fi slasher set in outer space. The tagline "In space, no one can hear you scream" has since become the catchphrase of the Alien film series, something director Fede Álvarez says he will leverage in Alien: Romulus, the seventh mainline Alien film. In an interview with Variety, the director explains how his movie will double down on horror without comic relief, which he considered the recurring pitfall of prior Alien movies.

Director Fede Álvarez says new and long-time fans of the first two Alien films will be pleasantly surprised by Alien: Romulus.
There's an overwhelming consensus that Alien and Aliens were the best films of the franchise and many consider subsequent installments subpar or even unnecessary. This divide has been evident even in the films where Sigourney Weaver reprised her role as Ellen Ripley; Alien 3 was considered a disappointing culmination of a trilogy, and many considered Alien: Resurrection too ham-fisted to take seriously. In an interview with Variety, director Fede Álvarez explains how Alien: Romulus will attempt to capture the spirit of the first two films while infusing new life into the series. He also revealed that Ridley Scott and James Cameron were heavily involved in developing the latest movie.
