The first short story in Andrzej Sapkowski's epic saga was simply titled "The Witcher." It was printed in the Polish fantasy and sci-fi magazine Nowa Fantastyka in 1986, as part of a contest. Sapkowski didn't win the top prize then, but readers were attracted to Geralt of Rivia's struggle to free a princess from an unfair curse. That encouraged Sapkowski, and in 1994, "Blood of Elves" became the first full novel about the mutant monster-hunter's trials. Gradually, Geralt's popularity trickled into the worldwide consciousness, helped along by the 2007 video game adaptation by CD Project.
Geralt's (portrayed by Henry Cavill) first adventure is the third episode of Netflix's "The Witcher." Titled "Betrayer Moon," the myth of the striga becomes a showcase for Geralt's gruff brand of empathy. In his world, monsters can't be allowed to roam free, but when he can, he saves them from their fates. The world of "The Witcher" is often cruel,...

Miracle of miracles — last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner went to a genuine monster movie! Guillermo del Toro’s overachieving Gill Man spectacle features a gratifyingly anti-authoritarian attitude. The emotional love story is as pure as a silent movie — and has the sentimental commitment to pull an audience into its dreamy Fairy Tale horror fantasy.

The Corridor
Stars: Stephen Chambers, James Gilbert, David Patrick Flemming, Matthew Amyotte, Glen Matthews, Nigel Bennett | Written by Josh MacDonald | Directed by Evan Kelly
Popping The Corridor into my DVD player I was first reminded of Lawrence Kasdan’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s Dreamcatcher – after all the plots are eerily similar: A group of friends head off to a snow-covered cabin in the woods and stumble across… something. In the case of Dreamcatcher it was aliens, in the case of The Corridor it’s something altogether more metaphysical.
Following his mother’s death, Tyler suffers a nervous breakdown, which results in him severing ties with his childhood friends. Years later, the group of friends decide to reunite for a weekend at his late mother’s country house in an attempt to rebuild friendships. Isolated deep in the snow covered forest, they stumble upon a mysterious supernatural hallway (the...

Masterfull horror story… Let’s be honest, this really sounds like a perfect job for the team behind (quite successful at the box office these days) Sinister movie! So no wonder we already have writer/director Scott Derrickson and producer Jason Blum on board for an adaptation of Stephen King‘s novella The Breathing Method.
In case you’re not so familiar with the whole thing, let me first inform you that The Breathing Method was originally published as part of 1982 anthology Different Seasons.
King’s tale is told from the point of view of Dr Emlyn McCarron, an aged attorney who, during his career at a New York law firm, gets invited by a senior partner to join him at a private men’s club. Members are greeted and served by the ubiquitous semi-sinister butler-type character.
The club and its furnishings have some mysteries of their own that are tantalizing but never fully revealed.

Toronto - Whether you know him best as Sean Connery, Roger Moore, or Daniel Craig, we all know him as Bond; James Bond. Tall, dark, and handsome, yet devilish, armed, and dangerous, Ian Fleming’s MI6 secret agent is the definition of iconic, influential, and indelible.
Starting October 26th, Tiff Bell Lightbox presents the North American Premiere of Designing 007: 50 Years of Bond Style, the most comprehensive James Bond exhibition ever. Running until January 20th, the showcase will explore the craft behind the Bond phenomenon, from the villains and femme fatales, tailoring and costumes, set and production design, and gadgets and special effects.
Notable highlights include Bond’s Samsonite briefcase with diamonds from Die Another Day (2002), his Omega Watch from Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), his bathing trunks from Casino Royale (2006), his Tom Ford tuxedo from Quantum of Solace (2008), Scaramanga’s golden gun and 007 bullet from The Man With the Golden Gun...

Sons of Anarchy creator, Kurt Sutter, must have become pretty chummy with some of the real-life members of Hells Angels since he has cast another of the badass bikers to play a part in the show’s fifth season. I guess Sutter wants to add a bit of the real world of bikers into his fictional world. I’m sure it has nothing to do with the comments he made regarding Discovery Channel’s The Devils Ride, which follows a number of Hells Angels, including the two now set to appear on Sons. I like to pretend Sutter is mildly frightened of these imposing men, though I’m sure he’s just being a nice guy.
According to TVLine, Hells Angels member Rusty Coones will be appearing in Episode 9 of Season 5, as Quinn. He’ll have a pretty significant part as the president of the Sons of Anarchy nomads, a...

Faisal A Quereshi's take on an Ostern - the Russian equivalent of Westerns - goes down well in Kazakhstan
Manchester filmmaker Faisal A. Qureshi has won the $10,000 pitching prize at the third Astana International Action Film Festival in Kazakhstan for his script The Adversary, which is based on the film genre Ostern, or 'Eastern', the Russian equivalent of a Western.
These were Russian films set on the steppes during the Russian Revolution or Civil War. They were propagandist in intent, but could still be watched as action films. The most famous was White Sun of the Desert, made in 1969. The Adversary is about a stranger recruited to defend a Jewish settlement from rampaging Cossacks.
Qureshi believes that the panel who awarded him the prize did so because:
the genre was something that they had not seen before or had even heard of. And I suppose because I am very enthusiastic about the subject.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.
In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.
The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.
Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences extended their 2012 membership invitations today to 176 lucky actors, directors, cinematographers, and other members of the filmmaking industry.
Terrence Malick, who somehow wasn’t already a member, received an invitation, as did fellow directors Rodrigo Garcia and Asghar Farhadi.
For actors, Melissa McCarthy’s invitation continues her incredible post-Bridesmaids rise. In addition, actors Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Andy Serkis, Jessica Chastain, and Octavia Spencer were all invited to be members, among others.
Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003, according to the Academy’s website.

A group of printers invest in a racehorse.
There is a certain amount of retro charm to Sacha Bennett's film tale of print union strife and racing but it never really manages to break free from the small-screen shadow of the likes of Only Fools And Horses.

Eureka, Season 5, Episode 3, “Force Quit”
Written by Terri Hughes Burton and Ron Milbauer
Directed by Mike Rohl
Airs Mondays at 9pm Et on SyFy
The three-part arc that has found the Astraeus crew trapped in a virtual world comes to a predictable conclusion this week as the crew is rescued. Though the impending results are obvious, “Force Quit” is still an exciting episode that moves at a rigorous pace.
Beverly comes to Eureka to help Carter, Henry, and Lupo find the captives. Carter taps into the Matrix where he must cause a system overload that would help Henry and Lupo trace the signal and find the crew. Inside the Matrix, Carter convinces Zane, Allison, Grace, and Fargo that he is the real Carter and they are trapped in a virtual world. They work together to blow up the virtual Astraeus, causing a spike in the Matrix that crashes the system.

Editor’s Note: This review previously ran as part of our Fantastic Fest coverage but with The Corridor hitting limited theaters this weekend, it makes sense to publish it once again. A sharp twist to the concept of getting together for a boys’ weekend (and the ultimate bizarre response to the influx of Dude Bro movies), The Corridor opts for rounded, deeply complicated characters who have the kind of shared history that is as likely to cause an outbreak of hugs as it is a burst of heated words and violent threats. The whole messy pile then gets an eyebrow-raising element right out of The Outer Limits dropped on top, and it’s off to the races. The film opens with a frantic confrontation where Tyler (Stephen Chambers) hides in a closet while his mother (Mary-Colin Chisholm) lies dead on the ground ostensibly by her own handful of pills. A brick wall named Bobcat (Matthew Amyotte), pretty...

Not since the Backstreet Boys and *Nsync has there been so much attention on boy bands. And a new generation of teen girls have their own 'Nsync and Bsb in the form of two British imports, the Wanted and One Direction.
Following in the grand tradition of boy bands before them, both bands are comprised of five guys who sing catchy pop tunes about falling for pretty girls. And with pop music experiencing its biggest upsurge in quite a while, it seems now is as good a time as any for boy bands to become en vogue once again.

Shortly after its run at Fantastic Fest last year, The Corridor was picked up by IFC Films. Now, Shock has come to learn the distributor's IFC Midnight banner will release the film on March 30th.
After the jump, you'll find the official trailer. That's the poster on the left - a minimalistic, well done piece of work.
Directed by Evan Kelly, the film stars Matthew Amyotte, Nigel Bennett, Stephen Chambers, Mary-Colin Chisholm, David Flemming, James Gilbert and Glen Matthews. You can read our review here.
They’ve been the best of buddies for more than a decade, but now they’re changing – getting married, getting promoted, going bald, going insane. During a male-bonding weekend, they will discover a spectral corridor through the woods – an impossible hallway where none should be. It will lead these five men into fear, into betrayal, and into the biggest change of them all: by weekend’s finish.

Creators: Stephen Carpenter, David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf.
Cast: Russell Hornsby, David Giuntoli, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz, and Reggie Lee.
The NBC television series "Grimm" is set to challenge other supernatural heavyweights on Friday night. In one corner is Fox's Fringe and in another is CW's "Supernatural." Just how well Grimm will fare will depend on how much audiences like the cop Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) as he combats the supernatural forces that have integrated into Portland society.
This television series is based off the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and it will put Burkhardt at odds with many creatures from both traditional legends and fictional lore. He's partnered with Hank Griffan (Russell Hornsby), who does not yet know that Burkhardt has the ability to see monsters posing as humans. Maybe he will learn about it in future episodes, but only time will tell.

A little news on an independent horror flick that is due to premiere next month. Blood Was Everywhere is about a killer on the loose in a small town in Massachusetts and will premiere on November 5th in The Green Room, Uxbridge Ma (where part of the film was shot). Judging from the trailer, which is posted below, I would think it is likely to go down quite well. Personally I am digging the atmosphere and use of the music, and surprisingly there isn’t blood everywhere. There is plenty in the trailer though to hint that the filmmakers haven’t skimped on the claret. Anyway, you can judge for yourselves.
*In Blood Was Everywhere, the nightmare of the unsolved, random murder is brought to life as a faceless killer wreaks havoc on the lives of average people in a small Massachusetts town.*

CBC, a Canadian TV network, surely didn't renew the TV series The Border for a fourth season last year. However, the TV series' first season will premiere in the USA on Ion Television, an American cable network.
The show will premiere on July 8 with two back-to-back episodes starting at 10 Pm.
In this TV series, we follow a squad of the fictitious Immigration Customs Security (Ics), a Canadian federal agency responsible of the security on the border between Canada and the USA. Major Mike Kessler (James McGowan) heads his team and does his best to maintain a clear-eyed decency while responding to the call of duty. He often clashes with agent Bianca Lagarda (Sofia Milos), an agent sent by the American government to work with the Ics.
The show also stars Graham Abbey, Nazneen Contractor, Jonas Chernick, Mark Wilson, Jim Cordington, Catherine Disher, Sarah Gadon and Nigel Bennett.

Title: The Corridor Director: Evan Kelly Starring: Stephen Chambers, James Gilbert, David Patrick Flemming, Matthew Amyotte, Glen Matthews, Mary-Colin Chisholm, Nigel Bennett Enough films — mostly horror, but inclusive of all sorts of reunion movies — unfold in and around secluded cabins in the woods that it would probably not at all be a stretch to program a festival comprised entirely of said offerings. A lot of times this setting is the result of writing to a single, accessible, low-budget location, and there isn’t a whole lot of imagination or quality of performance that then raises the material, and argues for either the talent or continued professional opportunity of those...

Am I the only one who got a little nervous reading the detailed schedule for the Royal Wedding posted on the official site? Can you imagine American celebrities announcing what time they will leave and arrive, which entrance will be used, and where the bride will be staying the night before the ceremony? We continue our examination of the new business book Practically Radical with author William C. Taylor's discussion of Threadless. How does a clothes company run by the customer manage to exceed expectations?
In an era of huge dislocations and scarce resources, fewer and fewer companies are in a position to hire lots of new people or devote big budgets to new projects as a way of moving forward. But most companies are surrounded by customers, suppliers, fans, advocates, and interested parties of all kinds who are passionate about what they do, bursting with ideas, and eager to be more involved. Why not invite them to demonstrate their creativity to you, share their best ideas with you, and collaborate to solve your toughest problems or deliver on your most promising opportunities? Originally airing from 1996 to 2000, this fictional drama focused on a group of scientists working for the Office of Scientific Investigation and Research (O.S.I.R.), trying to validate claims of encounters with the unknown and dealing with government conspiracies. While "X-files" took off, "Psi Factor" fell behind due to scheduling conflicts and moderate ratings.
One problem stemmed from Dan Aykroyd's claims that these case files were based on actual case logs. There was no validity despite the well-known fact that Aykryod is enamored with the world of the supernatural. But his contribution is not just limited to himself. His father,...

The Canadian distributor Vsc has sent a hi-res picture of the DVD artwork of The Border's third season. This Canadian espionnage series - which was aired on the public TV network CBC - will come out on DVD on August 10.
Despite the good reviews the shot has gotten, CBC didn't renew The Border for a fourth season.
The show tells the story of the fictional Immigration and Custom Security (Ics). The group is led by Maj. Mike Kessler, a former soldier of the Joint Task Force 2 (Canada's elite army). While Det. Sgt. Layla Hourani (Nazneen Contractor) died in the second season's finale, she'll be replaced by Khalida Massi (Athena Karkanis), a polyglot agent. This, for the benefit of future rock historians, is the transscript of a screenplay I wrote in the summer of 1977. It was tailored for the historic punk rock band the Sex Pistols, and was to be directed by Russ Meyer and produced by the impresario Malcolm McLaren. It still carried its original title, "Anarchy in the U.K.," although shortly after I phoned up with a suggested title change, which was accepted: "Who Killed Bambi?" I wrote about this adventure in my blog entry McLaren & Meyer & Rotten & Vicious & me. Discussions with Meyer, McLaren and Rene Daalder led to this draft. All I intend to do here is reprint it. Comments are open, but I can't discuss what I wrote, why I wrote it, or what I should or shouldn't have written. Frankly, I have no idea.

Toronto -- Stephen Chambers ("Casino Jack"), David Patrick Flemming and James Gilbert have entered "The Corridor," the Canadian indie horror thriller from Chronicle Pictures.
The film, written by Josh MacDonald, portrays best buddies on a male-bonding weekend who take a corridor into the forest that leads to death and destruction.
Evan Kelly ("Dawson's Creek") will direct and perform in the picture, which has key investment from Telefilm Canada as the federal film financier looks to back more homegrown genre pictures with boxoffice potential.
"The Corridor" is currently shooting in and around Halifax through March.
The ensemble cast includes Matthew Amyotte, Glen Matthews, Mary-Colin Chisholm and Nigel Bennett ("The Border").
Mike Masters and Craig Cameron are producing "The Corridor," which is set for a September 2010 release.

Snared: An MP watches over an illegal diamond panner at a detention center in Marange, October 2009.
Zimbabwe's newfound diamond fields could have helped lift the country from its misery. Instead, they've fueled a cycle of government-sanctioned rape, murder, and thievery -- and pushed the place still closer to collapse.
Scarred For Life: Elizabeth (not her real name) once sold blankets and other staples to miners in the Marange fields; during a government assault in late 2008, she says, she and other women were beaten and raped by soldiers.
Ali Moussa and his partner, Shahab Hamdan, are peripatetic veterans of the blood-diamond trade. For 15 years, they based themselves in Bo and Kenema, in Sierra Leone, near the...

As a guy who spent the better part of twenty years of his life in Hollywood working as a publicist and in the TV news biz, I almost found the flap with the Salahis getting into the State Dinner amusing. Almost, except that particular party-crashing represents a huge security breach, surprisingly bungled by the Secret Service. What makes it funny is the fact that the crashers were followed by a camera crew for their soon-to-be lame reality television series. Not wanting to let an excellent opportunity for some pop culture grandstanding to pass it by, congress is of course, flying into action. Members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform have placed the blame for the security breach squarely on the shoulders of a single, unnamed Secret Service officer. "It's very clear that there was one person who...

A dazzling debut by UK dramatist, Polly Stenham that recently took London’s
West End by storm, That Face is an explosive portrayal of an affluent family in freefall written in 2007 when Ms. Stenham was 19 years old.
The youngest playwright to ever be produced by The Royal Court Theatre, Ms. Stenham
leads the pack of new contemporary voices in British drama today. This world premiere stars Sonja Smits as Martha, best known for her multi-award-winning characters on “The Eleventh Hour”, “Traders” and “Street Legal”.
Nightwood Artistic Director and That Face director Kelly Thornton remarks, “I am thrilled to be tackling this complex and muscular drama. Stenham’s voice is raw and uncensored and for such a young writer her acute dissection of emotional neglect is arresting.”
Ms. Stenham delves into family dysfunction like a seasoned analyst with decades of experience. Her searing portrait of an upper class family exposes an...

Halloween is coming, and fright flicks are everywhere at repertory houses and special showings. Joining the screening events we previously listed here and here are more big-screen revivals of classic fear films, plus a couple of East Coast Zombie Walks!
• Canadian undead fans can take part in the 7th Annual Toronto Zombie Walk, which takes place Saturday, October 24 beginning at 3 p.m. This one starts at Trinity Bellwoods Park (meeting place is the pit between Dundas Street and, appropriately enough, Gore Vale Avenue) and ends at the Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor Street West), where the festivities continue with a Cinema of the Dead double feature of Thom Eberhardt’s Night Of The Comet and Lucio Fulci’s Zombie. Admission to the movies is $16 for ghouls and $20 for regular humans; more info on the Walk can be seen here, and on the screenings here.

Coming-of-age stories always retain a certain formula that usually consists of a teen full of angst breaking free from the shackles of expectations. Either placed on them by their parents or society as a whole, the subject usually discovers a passion which is usually not accepted by the film’s oppressors until the end, usually concluding in a tearful moment. The same is true for Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut with Whip It. Though the story, based on the novel Derby Girl by Shauna Cross who also adapted the story for screen, seems awfully generic on paper, it flies across the screen with warmth, genuine authenticity and crushing elbows to the face.
Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) isn’t like all the rest of ‘em. Growing up in the small town of Bodeen, Texas, 17-year-old Bliss is surrounded by grunting jocks and done-up pageant goers, something lost on the porcelain-faced girl.
