1990 was a peak year for Van Damage. The Muscles from Brussels was on the way to the big time after Bloodsport and Kickboxer (which made our list of the Best Fighting Movies) proved to be huge moneymakers at the box office. But, Jean-Claude Van Damme was different from some of his contemporaries because he was a hearthrob and a prime butt-kicker. His 1990 movie Lionheart was bought for distribution by Universal, paving the way to his breaking into mainstream studio work. But, before he could jump on that gravy train, he had one more movie left to make on his Cannon movie deal – but ironically, the company itself would not release the film theatrically due to its waning fortunes, with this being Van Damme’s first major studio release after MGM opted to distribute it. The movie? Death Warrant!

Ams Pictures has released the trailer for its new documentary “Karen Carpenter: Starving for Perfection,” which celebrates the pop singer’s life and music as well as details her untimely death after struggling with anorexia nervosa.
The Carpenters were a top musical act in the 1970s with songs such as “Close to You” and “We’ve Only Just Begun.” However, Karen’s chase for perfection and struggle with the at-the-time vastly misunderstood eating disorder led to her death at age 32.
Using unreleased recordings and celebrity interviews – including with Olivia Newton-John, Cynthia Gibb, Suzanne Somers, Kristin Chenoweth, Carnie Wilson, Bob James and Carol Burnett – the documentary sheds light on the singer’s short life and musical legacy.
The documentary was directed by Randy Martin and produced and written by Randy Schmidt. Brad Osborne produced and edited the film, and Carnie Wilson (of the pop band Wilson Phillips) and Andy Streitfeld executive produced the documentary.

Throughout much of his career, James Spader has excelled at playing a type; and that type is specifically this: rich and arrogant, with a sense of condescension and an air of pretense. It’s not his fault; his wispy (or is that WASPy?) good looks and mellifluous voice initially offer little sympathy to the working class. But when he’s given an opportunity to play against this type, the results are exhilarating. Such is the case with Jack’s Back (1988), a clever thriller elevated by a terrific dual role performance from Spader. Come for Jack the Ripper; stay for James the Spaders.
Released by Palisades Entertainment Group in May, Jack’s Back only made back half of its million dollar budget at the box office and the critics were for the most part, unkind (with the exception of Siskel & Ebert, who liked it – go figure). But writer/director Rowdy Herrington...

Annie (1982)
"The 1982 musical Annie reads like a Who's Who of the cast of Annie, but for me it's all about one performance: flame-headed ingénue Aileen Quinn played the title role, and like Daddy Warbucks himself, I was quite quite taken by her. On the advice of family and friends and myself, I waited until she turned 18 in 1989 before I even attempted to become pen pals with her. I wrote to her three times, but left it there."

We’re always good for a gooey Lifetime Movie with 2009’s Accused at 17, Mti has got one that reads like it fits the bill—well, the title does at least.

Nicole Gale Anderson (r.) is in a helluva lot of trouble in Accused at 17.
Here’s what it’s all about: When high school teenager Bianca (Nicole Gale Anderson, Make It or Break It) finds out her boyfriend has cheated on her with a classmate Dory (Lindsay Taylor, Hitman’s Run), she’s furious and out for revenge. Bianca and her best friends, Fallyn (Janet Montgomery, Black Swan) and Sarah (Stella Maeve, The Runaways), team up to play a prank on the girl to make her pay. Rosalind Russell in Mervyn LeRoy's Gypsy (top); Barbra Streisand in Paul Weitz's Little Fockers (bottom) Barbra Streisand won't be playing Mama Rose in a film version of the Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim-Arthur Laurents Broadway hit Gypsy, Laurents himself told The Hartford Courant. Gypsy was to have been Streisand's first screen musical since Yentl in 1983. Laurents, who wrote the book for the 1959 musical based on stripper Gypsy Rose Lee's autobiography, is one of Gypsy's rights holders. He directed three Gypsy revivals on Broadway: with Angela Lansbury in 1974, Tyne Daly in 1989, and Patti Lupone in 2008. Additionally, Bernadette Peters starred for Sam Mendes in a 2003 revival. Bette Midler recreated Mama Rose in a made-for-tv movie in 1993; Cynthia Gibb had the title role. On the big screen, Rosalind Russell played Mama Rose to Natalie Wood's Gypsy in a 1962 adaptation directed by Mervyn LeRoy. Gypsy was a major box-office hit,...

Pamela Guest on Julia RobertsIn 1985 or '86, I was hired to cast "Blood Red," an independent film starring Eric Roberts and directed by Peter Masterson, thanks to my mentor and friend Ellen Chenoweth. I had to go to New York to cast, and because Pete had connections at the Actors Studio, we held our auditions there. In Eric's contract was a clause that we had to either cast or audition his younger sister for a part in the film—I can't remember which. She'd been in New York a short time, and Eric wanted to help her get a start. The producer asked me to meet her, read her, and decide whether including her in the cast would ruin the movie. I spoke to her manager, Bob McGowan, about setting up a time, and he convinced me to just meet her that night. I agreed to a quick meet-and-greet at...

"Christine Conradt reveals the art of being a screenwriter"
by Michael Aaron Gallagher of StayFamous.Net
If you’ve ever found yourself lost in the on-screen magic of motion pictures, captivated by a dramatic action sequence, laughing out loud in a theater, or simply falling in love with a romantic line spoken by your favorite movie star, chances are you had to remind yourself that it’s all a fairytale, a world in which the actors merely play a part that has been written for them.
But where do those words come from and who imagines them?
Christine Conradt, screenwriter for the new film “Accused at Seventeen,” starring former Golden Globe nominee Cynthia Gibb, Nicole Gale Anderson (of the Disney Channel original series “Jonas”), and Reiley McClendon (“The Flyboys”), recently explained that the process of writing a screenplay for a film or television series is often a collaborative effort. Although...

Someone over at Netflix (and, more specifically Netflix's 'Watch Instantly' department) has been digging into my brain and pulling out some really strange and obscure movies that (as far as I know) aren't even available on DVD! The last time out, I was gushing over titles like Rolling Thunder, The Squeeze, and Planet of the Vampires -- but this time the Netflix VHS Stack is overflowing with wierd little flickers. Get a load of these ones:
The 1986 comedy Modern Girls, starring Cynthia Gibb, Daphne Zuniga, Virginia Madsen, and Clayton Rohner. I actually saw this one during its theatrical run. Some of the Animal House guys (Tim Matheson, Stephen Furst) team up with one of the Porky's guys (Dan Monahan) and the Esp hottie from Ghostbusters (Jennifer Runyon) to deliver one of the more fondly-remembered sex comedies of 1984: Up the Creek! Also features a cool Cheap Trick song and a great performance by a dog.
