A gripping plot, superb acting, thought-out dialog, an amazing ability to hold the audience's attention, sex, violence, and struggle for power – Game of Thrones was famous for all of this, but was it the first of its kind?
Perhaps in every genre there is the series that was unfairly closed at the most interesting moment. For fans of science fiction, Firefly became such a wound in the heart, and for fans of historical dramas, there is Rome, the return of which most connoisseurs of the genre dream of.
As it happens, Rome has only two seasons. But even that is enough to appreciate it.
Rome Was Game of Thrones’ Predecessor
Even before Game of Thrones, HBO and the BBC tried the "sex, blood and political intrigue" formula with Rome, which was released in 2005. And the historical period was more appropriate than ever: the Roman Empire just after the Gallic War...

Kerry Condon plays a potty-mouthed Ira gang leader and Neeson is the quiet antihero in this action thriller set at the height of the Troubles
Producer-director and veteran Clint Eastwood collaborator Robert Lorenz is now saddling up for this “Donegal western”. It is an action thriller that finds the cowboy spirit in the lush rolling grasslands of County Donegal in Ireland’s north-west, neighbouring Northern Ireland but geographically sequestered from the rest of the Republic.
In 1974, at the height of the Troubles, an Ira gang led by icy-hearted and potty-mouthed Doireann (Kerry Condon) accidentally kills a bunch of kids with a Belfast bomb blast. Without especially regretting the collateral damage, she leads her crew as they escape over the border into Donegal to lie low, fetching up on the outskirts of a village that appears populated by adorable stereotypes. These include a stolid Garda officer (Ciarán Hinds), and his best mate,...

The action thriller In the Land of Saints and Sinners was recently given a limited theatrical release in the United States, and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to talk to one of the film’s stars: Jack Gleeson, who may be best known for playing the role of Joffrey Baratheon on 27 episodes of Game of Thrones. You can watch Bumbray’s interview with Gleeson in the video embedded above, and you can read his 8/10 review of In the Land of Saints and Sinners at This Link.

Younger comic-book fans might be surprised to learn that there was once a time when Marvel Comics was on its last legs and willing to do anything to keep the company afloat. Before underdog blockbusters like the X-Men and Blade films put Marvel heroes back on the map, they were desperately trying to experiment with their comics in order to attract a wider audience.
One such experiment was the Marvel Knights imprint, a collection of stand-alone stories that initially focused on less-marketable heroes and gave artists free-reign to tell unique and more adult-oriented stories unshackled by decades of garbled continuity issues. While these stories didn’t always succeed in revitalizing characters for a new generation (and often contained the worst kind of late-90s/early 2000s edge), they were almost always incredibly stylish and memorable.
That’s why I think it’s very appropriate that Neveldine & Taylor’s film Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance...

The much-anticipated drama is written by A Song of Fire and Ice author George R.R. Martin.

IFC Films’ Late Night With The Devil topped the specialty market in its second week, as a Tollywood and a Bollywood film both made the top ten in a rare occurrence. Strong horror and Indian fare have helped buoy the box office since Covid. They continue to fill in the top ten, including this week, which boasts a monstrous hit in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire — but is a neighborhood with fewer overall wide release due to Hollywood strikes.
Scary first: Late Night With The Devil by Australian duo Colin and Cameron Cairnes stars David Dastmalchian, perfection as a late 1970s talk show host whose quest for ratings on a Halloween night broadcast goes nowhere good, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms. It grossed $2.2 million on 1,442 screens in week two, for a cume of $6.2 million. The film is in the top ten again, at no. 7.

Liam Neeson crime thriller In the Land of Saints and Sinners opens on 896 screens this weekend, joined by Sean Penn in Asphalt City — the Godzilla vs. Kong of the specialty market?
Neeson reunites with The Marksman director Robert Lorenz as a newly retired assassin in a remote Irish village who finds himself drawn into a lethal game of cat and mouse with a trio of vengeful terrorists. Ciarán Hinds, Kerry Condon, Colm Meaney and Jack Gleeson also star in Land of Saints and Sinners, which premiered at Venice, and was shot in County Donegal, Ireland. Screenplay by Mark Michael McNally and Terry Loane. Samuel Goldwyn Films’ widest release post-pandemic sits at 80% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

At some point during the first act of Robert Lorenz’s handsome but egregiously hackneyed “In the Land of Saints and Sinners,” which is maybe the 900th Liam Neeson movie about a weary hitman/rancher/fixer/truck driver/ex-cop/very tall person who decides to take matters into his own hands when some bad guys step over the line, the prolific Irish actor turns to one of his scene partners and sighs: “There’s more to me than this, and I’d like folks to see it.”
Needless to say, the first part of that sentence is much easier to believe than the second.
Cast here as a regretful assassin who tries to change his ways at the height of the Troubles (only to get mixed up with a trio of Ira terrorists who take cover in his quaint coastal village after a car bomb goes wrong), Neeson again reaffirms...

Plot: In 1974, an aging hitman (Liam Neeson) tries to leave his violent past behind and reinvent himself in a small, isolated town in Ireland. However, his good nature leads to him making a fateful decision that puts him in the crosshairs of an insane Ira assassin (Kerry Condon) and her cronies.
Review: I know what you’re thinking – another Liam Neeson action flick. Ho-hum. Normally, I’d be right there with you. While no one can deny he’s become the 21st century’s version of Charles Bronson, with him churning out a steady diet of B-level action flicks, not all of them are disposable in the way something like Blacklight, Honest Thief, Retribution and too many others are. Once in a while, he works with a really interesting director, such as on the beautifully photographed Marlowe by Neil Jordan. One of his better recent action flicks was definitely The Marksman,...

Easter weekend should help end March as one of the best months of the year so far, thanks to yet another major franchise sequel, this time “Godzilla.” Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
As March comes to an end, considerably better than earlier months this year, Warner Bros. are releasing the third sequel of the month that follows up a pandemic release, as “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” brings back the giant monsters that Legendary Pictures has been shepherding along since the 2014 “Godzilla” opened with $93 million, grossed $200.7 million domestic and $529 million globally. In 2017, “Kong: Skull Island” opened with $61 million, leading into 2019’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” which opened with considerably less, $47.8 million, and only made $383 million worldwide.
Those three movies led to 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which was stymied by the pandemic when it was released in late March 2021, just as movie theaters were reopening...

Liam Neeson was 56 when his career took an unexpected detour into the action hero genre thanks to 2008’s Taken, a Pierre Morel-directed surprise blockbuster that raked in more than $226 million worldwide and kick-started a franchise. He’s kept up a respectable pace ever since, churning out high-octane thrillers one after the next — and he’s not ready to hang up his holster.
“Audiences are innately intelligent and they’ll know when you’re past your prime in regards to throwing punches and firing guns, but I’m not there yet,” explained Neeson over Zoom last week while discussing his newest film, In the Land of Saints and Sinners. The Samuel Goldwyn Films release casts Neeson, who will be 72 in June, as Finbar Murphy, a man leading a relatively quiet life in the remote coastal town of Glencolmcille, Ireland, in the 1970s. AMC has renewed its supernatural anthology series The Terror for season 3 – and this time, we’re heading for a possibly haunted psychiatric hospital. Jolly.
The first two series of The Terror are spine-chilling, superbly creepy thrillers, and it’s with great pleasure that we’re able to report that the show’s returning with another hair-raising story.
Deadline reports that The Terror has been renewed for season three by AMC, with the new series will based on Victor Lavalle’s novel The Devil in Silver. Lavalle will also write the new series of The Terror with Chris Cantwell.
If the name Lavalle rings a bell, that would be for a good reason. His novel The Changeling was recently adapted into a compelling, thrilling AppleTV+ series of the same name, starring Lakeith Stanfield.
The Devil In Silver follows a man named Pepper, who finds himself committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital.

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards gave us our first true surprises of this year’s awards season. Since it is the first major kudos with five-nominee slots in each category, there was a number of snubs in the acting categories, one of whom was Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall,” in a sea of exclusions that included Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Rosamund Pike (“Saltburn”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), and the trio of actors from “May December”: Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton.
But fear not, they all still have hope yet for receiving recognition from the academy, particularly Hüller, who is the only performance from an international film in the bunch. She plays Sandra Voyter in Justine Triet‘s award-winning film, a woman who tries to...

Demons, witches, and devils have been around in religion and life for nearly as long as people have been around. This extends into movies as since the very beginning of motion pictures, we have attempted to capture the fears of these types of fears on film in a number of ways. Most of the media we see on it is built out from existing ideas to create a new narrative that looks to capture the interests of the general public enough to make a profit or base a movie on it. While many people know both the book and movie of The Exorcist, something like The Rite (watch it Here) that more or less came and went in the early 2010s proves that it also has an interesting story to tell. Whether or not you believe in the religious supernatural events found in either the book or the movie, it...

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Jeffrey Wright with the Montecito Award at a Feb. 15 event. At the event, Wright will discuss his career leading up to this year’s performance in “American Fiction,” for which he has received lead actor nominations for the Gotham, Spirit, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.
“I’ve been a fan of Mr. Wright since I first saw him in 1993 in the original Broadway production of “Angels in America.” I’ve since admired that he brings a high level of class and integrity to every role he does. Yet, no film had capitalized on his extraordinary range and virtuosity until “American Fiction.” It is about time,” Sbiff’s Executive Director Roger Durling.
Wright has received Tony, Emmy, AFI and Golden Globe awards and has appeared in “Rustin,” “No Time to Die,” “Westworld,” “Asteroid City” and “The Batman.”

‘The Family Plan’ Ending Explained & Movie Spoilers: Why Did Dan Agree To Work With Mccaffrey Again?
It’s been ages since I caught Mark Wahlberg in an action-packed role, and let me tell you, his latest film doesn’t disappoint. The Family Plan is an absolute must-watch. The film chronicles the exploits of Dan (Mark Wahlberg), an assassin turned family man, a guy who swapped guns and bombs for domestic bliss with his beautiful wife, Jessica (Michelle Monaghan), and a duo of teenagers, Nina (Zoe Margaret Colletti) and Kyle (Van Crosby), plus a newborn, Max, in the mix. Dan had traded in his high-stakes and dangerous job for a living as a car salesman. Dan is a superstar at his dealership, making sure everyone leaves with a smile after buying a car. Since he’s no longer an assassin, Dan has adopted a new mantra: no violence. This explains why he chose not to beat up the so-called bully for sharing his image online. Dan wasn...

Plot: Dan Morgan loves his quiet suburban life as a devoted husband, father of three and successful car salesman. But that’s only half the story. Decades earlier, he was an elite government assassin tasked with eliminating the world’s deadliest threats. When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife, angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas. Determined to protect his family — while treating them to the vacation of a lifetime — Dan must put his long-dormant skills into action, without revealing his true identity.
Review: Mark Wahlberg’s recent output has been mixed at best. For every solid acting project, Wahlberg has churned out awful action (Infinite), terrible comedy (Me Time), and a couple of attempts at franchises. The actor’s latest project blends humor and action in The Family Plan.

Would it have killed him to quit sit-ups for a few months? Maybe load up on some Häagen-Dazs? Famously, Mark Wahlberg wakes in the wee hours for a 3:30 a.m. workout — perhaps he could have treated himself to a five o’clock lie-in? Whatever the case, the star has made no concessions to dadbod reality in “The Family Plan.” Playing milquetoast car salesman Dan, a married father of three whom nobody knows used to be a high-level government assassin, he strips off early in proceedings — on a night of abortive anniversary lovemaking with his weary wife — to reveal a torso as jacked as the day is long. Yet those enviable xylophone abs run counter to the slim comic premise of Simon Cellan Jones’s formulaic shoot-’em-up: He’s a stone-cold killer, but everyone around him sees only a schlub.
