The classless practice of traumatic profiteering is alive and well in Thomas Walton’s micro-budget slasher Camp Pleasant Lake. We’ve become a society obsessed with gnarly true crime documentaries and podcasts, lifting infamous serial killers to celebrity status. As superfans once wrote letters to Charles Manson in prison, studios now churn out streaming programs about despicable icons like Bundy and Dahmer to capitalize on trending viewership. Camp Pleasant Lake is an intriguing commentary on selling someone else’s grief and loss for your next payday, but at no point does Walton’s execution do his “Horror LARPing” concept justice.
The film takes place at Camp Echo Lake, where new owners Rick (Michael Paré) and Darlene Rutherford (Maritza Brikisak) have reopened as an immersive Halloween experience. For $10,000, attendees are treated to “Camp of Terror,” an all-inclusive murder party that ties back to a horrible crime committed on the grounds 20 years prior.

“They say you cross paths with at least 20 killers in your lifetime and don’t even know it…” This line of text opens the latest feature from writer/director Thomas Walton, intending to deliver a sense of foreboding regarding what is to come. Camp Pleasant Lake unfolds on the grounds of a revitalized campsite that a couple have transformed into an interactive horror experience.
The camp was previously the location of a young girl’s disappearance, which occurred at a similar time to her parent’s murders. This unfortunate event is a selling point for the horror camp, as its opening coincides with the twentieth anniversary of the mentioned tragedy. A bunch of horror LARPers meet grisly ends in the micro-budget summer camp slasher, Camp Pleasant Lake. Boasting a small selection of familiar faces from genre cinema and a mystifying lead performance from Jerry Maguire’s Jonathan Lipnicki, who hams it up like a Christmas dinner, Camp Pleasant Lake is a decidedly low brow feature, though not without its bright spots. Michael Paré and Maritza Brikisak are Rick & Darlene Rutherford, the new owners of the cursed camp at Echo Lake. Twenty years ago, the camp was the site of a heinous double murder and the disappearance of Jasper and Echo Meadows. Today the Rutherfords have decided to turn the place into a kind of tragedy fantasy camp, with attendees paying big bucks to relive the...

Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar very much wants to be one of the plethora of low-budget 1970s knock offs of Star Wars riding the comet tail of that phenomenon. It’s just not bad enough to be lumped in with Bartle Beyond the Stars or the 3-D mess of Spacehunters. Nor is it good enough to be a thoughtful low-budget meditation on the soul. It falls in between and is quickly forgotten the moment you turn off the DVD of the 2022 release, out now from Uncork’d Entertainment.
Late in the 30th century, mankind has somehow managed to survive the contemporary mess we’ve made of ourselves and has even managed to find a way to preserve the human soul, reducing it to a blue goo. Camp Pleasant Lake: "DeskPop Entertainment will release Thomas Walton's refreshingly indie new horror film Camp Pleasant Lake in select cinemas and on VOD February 27th! The picture, which stars 90s screen icon Jonathan Lipnicki alongside a bevvy of genre film icons, is a loving throwback to the thrilling, violent summer camp slasher films of the 1980s.
In Camp Pleasant Lake, Rick and Darlene Rutherford breathe life into the eerie remnants of an old campsite, unaware of its dark past. Strange occurrences haunt the area, mirroring the tragedies of the old camp, where two decades earlier, a young girl was kidnapped and her parents brutally murdered. Amidst chilling atmospheres and long-forgotten secrets, the couple grapples with a horrifying revelation—they are entwined in the camp's history. And as the shadows of the past collide with the present, the Rutherfords must confront the haunting histories of a sinister crime.

Lifetime films traffic in a certain kind of narrative, namely infidelity, deception, dark romance, and occasionally murder. Tall, Dark, and Dangerous tackles at least three of these qualities, which is appropriate given the film is set partially around Valentine’s Day, a holiday ripe for sensational, slightly ridiculous narratives.
Following an underwhelming opening sequence in which Mercedes (Griselle Escotto) is menaced by a man on the phone before her house is broken into, the main narrative introduces quintessential Lifetime protagonist Alice Miles (Jamie Bernadette).
Alice is smart, wealthy, and, most importantly for Tall, Dark, and Dangerous, bad at relationships. When the film opens, Alice is promoted to partner at her law firm by her boss Ed (Eric Roberts), something her overly invested Woc work bestie Jane (Alana Walker) wants her to celebrate. Considering the rapidly approaching holiday and Alice’s lack of personal life, Jane boldly forces Alice to “shoot...

The press release for Wanted Man describes writer/director/star Dolph Lundgren’s character like this, “Johansen is an ageing detective, whose outdated policing methods have given the department a recent public relations problem.” Those outdated methods include beating up a suspect while making what could be taken as racist remarks, all in full view of a news crew.
In case that isn’t enough to let us know what he thinks of his neighbours to the South, we get to see him hang out at a strip club with some buddies, including Brenner, Hilts and Tinelli trading comments about how disgusting Mexicans are. And to cap off the night, he has to be stopped from attacking another Mexican in the parking lot.

One week after the anticipated season 11 return of Vanderpump Rules, Tom Sandoval will mark his return to the Lifetime cinematic universe with a movie that — like his Bravo unscripted series — focuses on a relationship marred by deception.
On Thursday, Lmn (Lifetime Movie Network) announced its upcoming slate of original films for the first three months of 2024, including Tall, Dark and Dangerous, set to air Feb. 8. Sandoval appears in the thriller that debuts just one week after Vanderpump Rules returns with the continued aftermath to the Scandoval controversy, which centered on last year’s revelation that Sandoval cheated on longtime partner Ariana Madix with Raquel Leviss.
Tall, Dark and Dangerous is a Valentine’s Day-themed movie about Alice (Jamie Bernadette) realizing that Chris (Matthew Pohlkamp), the seemingly perfect guy she met on a dating app, is not the person he seems and actually stole the identity of his former roommate, played by Sandoval.

“People ask me, where are all the great exploitation movies today? The low-budget horror films? They’re on the Lifetime Network!” Shudder’s horror host Joe Bob Briggs once said, and he’s not entirely wrong about that. Inthe 1995 "The X-Files" episode "Død Kalm," Agents Mulder and Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) trek out to the U.S.S. Ardent, an American destroyer frozen in a remote area off the coast of Norway. The ship had recently been abandoned by its crew as a mysterious environmental condition had caused them to age rapidly; although in their 20s, they looked like they were in their mid-60s. When Mulder and Scully arrive on the Ardent, they find that the remaining crew on board has become mummified and that the ship's hull has already begun to rust through. Before too long, Mulder and Scully begin aging rapidly as well. Mulder theorizes that they have encountered a "wrinkle in time," and that the Ardent might be going through something similar to the notorious Philadelphia Experiment of 1943. Scully later finds that their advanced aging might have something to do with the ship's freshwater supply.

This new film follows a police officer who must retrieve an eyewitness from Mexico and escort her across the border after a cartel shooting leaves several DEA agents dead, then he must decide who to trust when they discover that the attack was executed by American forces. Lundgren also stars as Detective Johansen, with a cast including Kelsey Grammer, Michael Paré, Christina Villa, Roger Cross, and Bourke Floyd. Not sure why exactly Lundgren feels like he needs to tell this story in this way,...

Closing out the first night of this year’s Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival, The Puppetman tossed me a nugget of nostalgia early in the film when the leads make a booze run and I recognized the upside-down sign of Buffalo’s On the Rox Liquors, where many an eventful weekend of my own started.
But that doesn’t come until after we see a man brutally murder his wife while his young daughter cowers, caged in a dark closet. He seems to be struggling with himself as he beats her with a frying pan and stabs her. And that is his defence in court, it wasn’t him, someone or something else was controlling his body. It doesn’t get him acquitted, but it does get him a nickname,...

Earlier this month, a serial killer thriller called Squealer was given a theatrical and digital release. You can watch the trailer for that one Here. Squealer drew inspiration from the story of Robert Pickton, a Canadian pig farmer who was charged with killing 26 women (but claimed to have killed 49). He would feed the bodies of his victims to the pigs. Just a couple weeks after Squealer made its way out into the world, another serial killer thriller inspired by the Pickton case has arrived in theatres, and you can watch the trailer for this one, which is called Pig Killer, in the embed above.
Pig Killer is currently playing in the following theatres:
Laemmle LA
Film Noir Brooklyn
Reeding Berkeley
Vancouver – Van City Oaks Cinema Center
It will be receiving a VOD and Blu-ray release next week, on November 21st. Copies are available for pre-order on Amazon.

It’s not often that a movie which made less than $5 million at the box office will still be talked about four decades later, but Eddie and the Cruisers fits the bill. Despite the fact that it was a box office disaster, the film spawned a hit soundtrack, had a pair of hit singles, and became a cult hit through cable airings and home video. When the film was being shot, Michael Paré was a young actor working on The Greatest American Hero, and Eddie and the Cruisers was his big screen debut. Speaking at a fan event, Paré said he was as shocked as anybody else when the film started to take on a whole new life. Indie horror frightmaker Brandon Christensen is back again with a supernatural shocker that boasts some of the year’s most brutal moments in horror. With Christensen’s signature style of slick, straight-to-the-point storytelling, the titular Puppetman is an inventive and new villain, akin to urban legends favs The Candyman or The Blair Witch…with one helluva twisted sense of humor.
The Puppetman, imprisoned and awaiting his fate on death row, has consistently professed his innocence, attributing his murderous spree to an ominous power that dominated him. As the narrative unfolds, Michal (portrayed by Alyson Gorske), his daughter, witnesses eerily familiar deaths around her. This sparks doubt about the authenticity of her father’s claims. As the deaths escalate, Michal finds herself burdened with the daunting task of unraveling the enigma of The Puppetman‘s curse.

We love rock & roll, and so do most moviegoers, which is why cinema is filled with heroes who get together with their friends to pound out some numbers. Whether they do it for fame and fortune or to just hang out with buddies, pop bands are inherently cinematic, tying together moving images and sound to create something spectacular. That’s particularly true of fictional groups, who often draw from real-world inspirations and transform them into moving protagonists or hated villains.
This list covers ten of the best fictional bands in cinema history. The key word here is “bands,” as we ignore solo acts, even from really good films. So Mac Sledge from Tender Mercies won’t show up, nor will Noni Jean from Beyond the Lights. Also, we’re looking at fictional groups here, so the Ramones from Rock & Roll High School don’t show up, nor do Talking Heads,...

No one was afraid of cinematic excess in the ’80s, and nothing says “cinematic excess” quite as perfectly as the rock musical, a sub-genre that took on all sorts of (rockin’ and rollin’ and just plain bitchin’) shapes in the decade that birthed everything from “Purple Rain” to “Flashdance” and “The Blues Brothers.”
Buried amongst a decade rife with musicals, rock jams, and the frequent intersection of the two is Walter Hill’s raucous “Streets of Fire,” an intensely creative rock musical fantasy filled with fantastic visuals and even better songs. It’s about as cool a film as anyone could ever hope to see, no matter the decade.
When it was released in the summer of 1984, the film was a box office bust: it made just $8 million on its $14.5 million budget, scuppering plans for an official trilogy, ultimately landing young star Diane Lane a Razzie nom (vile!), and sending...

On-screen text opens the film to highlight the harm caused by the 2018 red tide outbreak, as over $10 million in tourist money was lost alongside an unfathomable massacre of 2000 tons of marine life. That real-life event is used as the basis for this feature, directed by John A. Russo, Gavin Peretti, and Joseph M. Setele.
The contamination of water from red tide helps convicted cop killer Al David (Rich Sands) somehow escape from custody. The tagline for The Asylum’s latest film Monster Armageddon reads “Welcome to the Multiverse”. But the film actually has less in common with Marvel or DC’s concept of shared universes than it does with Toho’s monster mashes like Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla Final Wars.
As the film opens an unidentified object heading toward Earth takes out the Iss. At the same time a US Navy ship under the command of Ltc Madoyln Webb is attacked and sunk by a giant, one might even say mega, piranha. Could there be a connection? Of course, there is.

Plot: Space scavengers and a group of mercenaries race across the cosmos in a search for a long-lost freighter that is said to contain great treasure.
Review: I have a lot of admiration for filmmakers who don’t let financial limitations stifle their creativity or force them to minimize the scope of their stories. In that regard, there’s a lot to admire about director Garo Setian’s sci-fi adventure film Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar. Just like the title instantly brings to mind Star Wars, Space Wars is reminiscent of the low budget sci-fi movies producers like Roger Corman pumped out in the wake of the original Star Wars’ success. You know, movies like Battle Beyond the Stars and the movies that featured stock footage from Battle Beyond the Stars. Space Wars just happens to have been made on an even lower budget than those had.

"It can't be found." Neither can any good directors, I guess. Uncork'd Ent. has revealed an official trailer for a low budget sci-fi creation called Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar, marking the feature directorial debut of an editor named Garo Setian. Yeah there isn't much here. The title and the footage looks like it's another The Asylum spoof, with even worse VFX. Life is an adventure for space scavengers Kip Corman and his daughter Taylor as they navigate their ship through a universe filled with monsters, aliens, and robots in order to reach the mythical Deepstar and collect the riches within. They want to make bank in hopes that the money will allow them to bring back their loved one from the dead. The action-packed sci-fi adventure movie stars Michael Paré, Olivier Gruner, Sarah French, Tyler Gallant, Rachele Brooke Smith, and Sadie Katz. This looks so hilariously bad, it's beyond parody,...

No relation to the anime of the same name or the Don Bluth film Titan A.E. for that matter, this Attack on Titan is – you guessed it – another creatively titled film from The Asylum. This one justifies its title by having a rebel faction on Saturn’s moon Titan object to Earth’s deal with the government to harvest water crystals. Since they launch an attack on us, the film, whose original title, Alien Space Battle, still appears in the end credits would be more accurately called Attack from Titan. But that just doesn’t sound the same.
After an attack on a freighter carrying those water crystals back to Earth Citizen Prime Ortiz orders Max Reece to put together a mission to rescue it. There’s just one problem, the only...

The Headless Horseman is one of the latest horror films from The Asylum to hit DVD here in the UK, and it;s what sounds like a mashup of Ghost Rider and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Or Ghost Rider and The Punisher if the UK DVD artwork is to be believed.
To quote the film’s press release “When seconds from death, a nearly decapitated and desperate man makes a deal with the devil to protect the love of his life and seek revenge on the drug dealer who almost murdered him.” Why does it not surprise me that The Asylum’s lack of quality extends to its marketing department?

Bridge of the Doomed certainly can’t be accused of being a slow burn. Within the first few minutes, an army base comes under attack, and a group of civilians is overrun and eaten by zombies. And there’s no hesitation to put the bloody results on the screen. This is the zombie apocalypse 80s style, except it isn’t badly dubbed into English.
After the opening attack, General Vasquez sends a squad led by Lt Whitmore and Sgt. Hernandez to hold a bridge or destroy it in necessary, while they wait for reinforcements to arrive. Getting those reinforcements falls to the ominously named Colonel Charon.

Be sure to check out Fright Rags, Gutter Garbs, Terror Threads, Theatre of Creeps, Inked Up Merch, Terror Vision Records, and Pizza...

The Greatest American Hero is a show that’s much beloved by folks of a certain generation. If you grew up in the seventies or eighties, the theme song is instantly iconic. In fact, the track “Believe it or Not” by Joey Scarbury actually made it all the way to the number 2 spot on the Billboard Charts. As the film opens an unidentified object heading toward Earth takes out the Iss. At the same time a US Navy ship under the command of Ltc Madoyln Webb is attacked and sunk by a giant, one might even say mega, piranha. Could there be a connection? Of course, there is.
