The Story: A college kid (Brandon Lee) witnesses a gangland hit. Betrayed by witness protection, he’s recruited by a task force headed by a no-nonsense cop (Powers Boothe) as a pawn, but little do they know he’s more than able to handle himself against any of his foes.
The Players: Starring: Brandon Lee, Powers Boothe, Tzi Ma & Nick Mancuso. Directed by Dwight H. Little.
The History: The early nineties were the heyday of the martial arts movie star. Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme were consistently churning out hits, so if they could become icons, why not a guy like Brandon Lee? He was movie star handsome, could move, was charismatic and could act. Oh yeah – he also happened to be the son of the greatest Kung-Fu movie star of all time, Bruce Lee.
“I wouldn’t want to refer to them as stepping stones. That seems to demean them.

In the world of buddy cop comedies, the "Rush Hour" franchise remains a standout. The odd coupling of a reserved chief inspector from Hong Kong and a fast-talking LAPD officer sparked three action-packed, hilarious films popular the world over, amassing over $850 million at the global box office.
Across the three films, Chief Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) and Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker) solve cases in Hong Kong and the U.S., even paying a brief visit to France, typically involving the Triads and government officials. And while the trilogy offers adrenaline-inducing action sequences, it's the comedic chemistry between the two actors that has endured.
When the first installment of "Rush Hour" debuted in 1998, North American audiences had just become acquainted with Chan following the success of "Rumble in the Bronx," while films like "Friday" and "The Fifth Element" highlighted Tucker as an emerging comedic voice. Their natural banter won audiences...

The CW will not continue with Kung Fu, its reboot of the classic series, which has run for three seasons. It is the latest cancellation of an existing scripted series at the network, which is changing its business model under its new owners to focus on lower-cost scripted originals, primarily from Canada and the UK.
So far, only the CW’s strongest existing scripted series, All American and Walker, have been renewed for next season. The three least likely, The Winchesters, Kung Fu and Walker Independence, have been canceled. Remaining in limbo are Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming, which are believed to have the best chance (however small it may be), followed by Gotham Knights.

“The Winchesters” has been canceled after one season at The CW, with the network also canceling the reboot of “Kung Fu” after three seasons.
“As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions,” The CW said in a statement. “We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of ‘Kung Fu’ and ‘The Winchesters’ for all their hard work, creativity and dedication.”
The “Supernatural” prequel series “The Winchesters” followed demon hunters Sam and Dean’s parents, John (Drake Rodger) and Mary (Meg Donnelly), telling the story of how the couple met as teens and how they ultimately came together to save the entire world. The story is told from Dean’s (Jensen Ackles) perspective, marking the first return of Ackles’ character since the series finale in November of 2020.
In addition to Rodger and Donnelly, Bianca Kajlich, Demetria McKinney, and Nida Khurshid also starred.

With a better awards season campaign, Lulu Wang’s sophomore feature “The Farewell” could have ended up with more than one Golden Globe award. The film premiered to stellar reviews at last year’s edition of Sundance, which are usually enough to create a significant buzz. The decision to ship it off to wide distribution in late summer / early autumn and in anglophone countries first, led to a decent box office success ($22 million against the budget of $3 million) for an indie film, but it affected the film’s chances for the awards.
“The Farewell” is screening at Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema
The plot follows Billie (played by Chinese-American rapper/actress Nora Lum better known as Awkwafina) and her coming to terms with the fact that her beloved grandmother Nai Nai (Zhao Shuzhen) is dying at the opposite end of the world. She is diagnosed with a terminal lung cancer,...

This post contains spoilers for both "Arrival" and the novella "Story of Your Life."
"Arrival" is a notable sci-fi film for many reasons, not just because it's what convinced Hollywood to let director Denis Villeneuve take charge of a sequel to "Blade Runner" (which was awesome) and then "Dune," which was even better. Villeneuve seems to have a knack for taking an already-impressive existing story and putting his own spin on it, and it was with "Arrival" that this talent of his became clear to everyone.
The movie is based on Ted Chiang's novella "Story of Your Life," first published in 1998. The story's around 50 pages long, and it doesn't seem particularly interested in creating any sort of dramatic, ticking-clock scenario. Aliens still visit Earth and the main character is still a linguist trying to communicate with them, but there's not much sense that these aliens might be a threat...

Sunday Am Final: Some parts of the weekend box office are alive, and some are dead, and that which is vibrant is Paramount’s second weekend of Smile, which — as we mentioned during the weekend preview — was apt to steal No. 1 away from newcomers Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile and Amsterdam.
The Parker Finn R-rated horror film is posting the second-best hold ever for an R-rated horror movie, with an amazing -22 and 17.6M, after 2017’s Get Out, which eased -15. This puts Smile‘s 10-day total just under 50M. Smile also owns the best non-holiday second weekend hold for a wide release during the pandemic era. Smile‘s second Saturday at 7.4M was up 38 over the pic’s second Friday of 5.4M. EntTelligence clocked 1.4M who saw Smile in weekend 2, to 900K admission for Lyle, Lyle Crocodile and 450K tickets punched for Amsterdam.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise.
Despite Kung Fu Season 2 Episode 13 sealing the fate of Zhilan, Yvonne Chapman is sticking around.
TV Line reported Thursday morning that Chapman will return as a series regular for Kung Fu Season 3.
If you watch Kung Fu online, you know that Zhilan was killed off after sacrificing herself to take down Russell Tan.
It was a truly shocking development and one that got fans talking.
“It was never even a question for us that we’d be asking the incredible Yvonne Chapman back to the show,” co-showrunner Bob Berens said in a statement to TV Line.
“Zhilan’s dramatic sacrifice in the Season 2 finale creates an exciting new beginning for her character, and we can”t wait for viewers to see what we’ve got planned for her.”
Jb Tadena has also been promoted to series regular in the role of Sebastian.

"Just tell them what happened." Vertical Ent. has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie drama titled A Shot Through the Wall, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Aimee Long. This already premiered at the New York Asian Film Festival earlier this year, and hits VOD this January. The film stars Kenny Leu as Mike Tan, with Ciara Renee, Clifton Davis, Lynn Chen, Tzi Ma, Derek Goh, and Dan Lauria. This looks quite intense and heartbreaking. A sad story for everyone involved. I appreciate all the different perspectives and impressions in here, sometimes we need to hear the full story to understand. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Aimee Long's A Shot Through the Wall,...

This comes as the network continues to look for stability in its scripted lineup – bringing the number of renewals for the 2021-22 season to 15 with only The Republic of Sarah, which launches in June, still pending.
The renewal of Kung Fu is not a surprise. The drama kicked off strong with more than 3.5M viewers watching the premiere episode and it had the highest total viewership number for a Wednesday debut in 7 years since The 100 debuted in 2014.
Kung Fu follows a young Chinese American woman, Nicky Shen, played by Olivia Liang, whose quarter-life crisis causes her to drop out of college and go on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China.

Six-part series explores the lives of the people and families behind America’s Asian restaurants
HBO Max has given a six-episode series order to the docuseries “Take Out” from journalist Lisa Ling, the streamer announced Wednesday.
The series will follow Ling into the lives of the people and families behind America’s Asian restaurants. The project is described as an exploration of “the storied and complicated journey of the Asian community, past and present, at a critical time, while zig-zagging the country celebrating the joy that the little white take-out box can bring.”
“It is time that we learn about a community that has been integral to America’s development but has largely been ignored by American history,” Lisa Ling said in a statement. “My own family’s path to their American dream started in a Chinese restaurant, and I cannot wait to learn the stories of those whose journey...

The original “Kung Fu” is a relic of its time. The series, which ran from 1972 to 1975, starred actor David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk who traveled through the American West helping others and outrunning a bounty on his head — all with the power of the martial arts on his side. Of course, Carradine was not Asian in any way and with our current ability to cast authentically, it make sense to reboot the series in a way that promotes a more positive depiction.
“Kung Fu,” which premiered on The CW on April 7, tells the story of Nicky Shen (Olivia Liang), a young Asian-American woman who spends three years in a shaolin monastery only to return to her native San Francisco when her mentor is murdered. Neither Liang nor showrunner Christina Kim had a deep familiarity with the original series prior to embarking on this iteration.
