While 2011 was a banner year for the British box office, there was one success story that proved more surprising than any others. It was a film that, despite costing a fraction of the competition, outearned "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," "The Hangover Part II," "Transformers: The Dark Of The Moon" and "Sherlock Holmes: Game Of Shadows," and doubled the grosses of films like "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," "Fast Five" and "Cars 2," becoming one of the most successful British comedies in history. That film was "The Inbetweeners Movie," a big-screen version of the popular TV teen comedy (which airs on BBC America in the U.S.), and now, it's finally coming to the U.S.

Morgan Spurlock's latest documentary Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope was one of Peter's favorite movies [1] at Toronto and one of my favorite movies [2] of Fantastic Fest. It's a totally different film for the Super Size Me director as he stays off camera and follows several unique people on their journey to the mecca of pop culture, San Diego Comic-Con. In doing so , Spurlock dissects not only why Comic Con is such an amazing event, but why we geeks love what we love. The film is beautiful, inspiring, funny and, up until today, had only played at festivals. That'll change next year because Wrekin Hill Entertainment and the National Entertainment Collectibles Association have acquired the film for theatrical distribution in Spring 2012. In addition, the film will tour larger venue and bring audiences outside of San Diego their own kind of mini-Comic-Con experience complete with Q&A's, contests, presentations,...

After months of speculation that went hand-in-hand with talk of Oscars, the U.S. distribution contest for Zhang Yimou‘s The Flowers of War has ended a tad anticlimacticly. A press release announces that Wrekin Hill — the company recently behind Hesher, The People vs. George Lucas, and The Way Back — have picked up the Christian Bale starrer for an opening later this year. With Row 1, they’ll release it in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco “in late December 2011,” rolling it out to other markets at the start of next year.
Awards hope isn’t completely dissipated by this news — but it could very well be hurt. Wrekin Hill is a very small distributor who couldn’t find the proper method to support Peter Weir‘s The Way Back, a film that could have easily earned a nomination for something more technical — cinematography, perhaps — so long as it had the proper backing.

It was crucial to the filmmakers behind Zhang Yimou's $90 million 1937 war epic The Flowers of War that the Chinese Oscar entry hit theaters in December soon after the December 16 Asian release of the most expensive Chinese film ever made. They are concerned about piracy. Many of the bigger players, afraid of the film's intense Nanking Massacre content, had full year-end release slates. So Wrekin Hill Entertainment and Row 1 Productions will release the film theatrically in late December in three North America cities--New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Producer Zhang Weiping is banking on an "aggressive release strategy" and an "effective awards campaign." Last week, we told you that American distributors were keeping their distance from the new film about Charles Darwin, the father of Evolution. Strangely enough, the film is called Creation and perhaps even more strangely (to some), the film has finally been picked up by the same distributor that released The Passion of the Christ.
Newmarket Films announced today that it will release director Jon Amiel's film, which stars Paul Bettany as Darwin and Jennifer Connelly as his wife. The immediate plan is to release the film in December, although if they were really thinking, they'd release it on November 25th, the day after the 150th anniversary of On The Origin of Species.
There are a couple of great quotes about this acquisition, and I'll share both of them with you. First is Newmarket's Chris Ball:
"We at Newmarket pride ourselves in getting behind important films that help...

New York -- Indie distributor Newmarket is back on the acquisitions scene, picking up U.S. rights to Toronto International Film Festival opener "Creation."
Chris Ball's and Robert Fyvolent's company has sealed the deal for Jon Amiel's pic about the life of Charles Darwin, and will aim for a December release.
Paul Bettany stars as the scientist who, as depicted here, battled with others over questions of religion vs. science as he wrote his classic tome "On the Origin of Species," and also battled his own demons over the loss of a young daughter. Bettany's wife, Jennifer Connelly, stars as his onscreen spouse.
Jeremy Thomas produced the film with BBC Films and Ocean Pictures. HanWay repped the film makers in the sale.
The movie was generally well-received when it opened Toronto two weeks ago, though given its period aspects, found a slightly tougher acquisitions market.

This could fit into guilt trap and dramatic mold of A Map of the World. The Year of Fog is based on the San Francisco-set novel that follows a young woman whose fiance's child vanishes when she momentarily looks away to take a photograph. The couple then struggles through blame, loss and grief while constructing their own ideas about the girl's fate. Newmarket will produce and fully finance the bigscreen project. P.
