“Queen Rock Montreal” will make its global streaming premiere May 15 on Disney+ as the first concert film available with Imax Enhanced sound by DTS.
When it arrived in theaters in January, the remastered 1981 concert was Imax’s biggest exclusive engagement. Now, it will debut on Disney+ alongside 18 Marvel films that will also be offered with Imax Enhanced sound on supported devices, Imax’s senior VP and head of Imax post and image capture Bruce Markoe announced during a panel Sunday at the Nab Show in Las Vegas.
The original concerts, featuring Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, took place over two consecutive nights in November 1981, and were arranged specifically to be filmed for a full-length concert film to document their live show. The performance includes classics such as “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Somebody to Love.” It was restored for Imax by Mercury Studios.

Days after Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love overperformed in its opening weekend at the box office, Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman stole a bit of the spotlight Feb. 20 in unveiling not one but four intersecting feature films from Sam Mendes about The Beatles, each focusing on one member of the Fab Four: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
“You have to match the boldness of the idea with a bold release strategy,” Rothman tells The Hollywood Reporter about the project that earned the Oscar-winning director a coveted signoff from the group’s selective label Apple Corps. “There hasn’t been an enterprise like this before, and you can’t think about it in traditional releasing terms.”
Sony hopes the films, which don’t yet have writers on board, will begin shooting in the U.K. in mid-2025 to make the planned 2027 release for all four titles,...

During a resurgence in concert films, Imax is releasing a dynamic, digitally remastered version of a classic Queen performance featuring Freddie Mercury, Brain May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, which will have a limited run Jan. 18-21 in select Imax locations.
Queen Rock Montreal, directed by Saul Swimmer for Mercury Studios, originates from filming two consecutive performances in Montreal during 1981. To create the imagery, the original 35mm negative was rescanned at 4K and restored for the release at OnSight, a London-based postproduction company, and Imax.
The songs were remixed from a 2007 5.1 version of the concert, and are now presented in Imax’s 12.0 sound format. The sound restoration was completed at London’s Halo, where the team worked with Kris Fredriksson and Justin Shirley-Smith from Queen Productions. Brian May and Roger Taylor reviewed and approved the work at the BFI Imax theater in London. Said Imax’s senior vp postproduction Bruce Markoe,...

We will, we will block you. It seems that concert footage of Queen is being flagged and removed from social media platforms. And while this might initially seem like the doing of Queen, guitarist Brian May is far from supporting it, even apologizing to fans who have tried to share their favorite live songs online.
Brian May — who, along with Roger Taylor, has been a member of Queen since 1970 — took to Instagram to address the concern, saying Universal has turned “Draconian” through their task. But he wants to break free from the assumption he and the band had any say in removing the videos. “The decision to take these videos down certainly hasn’t come from us, the band. hopefully we will get an answer soon. Meanwhile, be extra careful and l’m sorry you good folks of good intentions have been put in this position.”

A funny thing happened on the way to the Colosseum. That unbelievably epic three-minute Pepsi commercial you surely remember from the early 2000’s where Britney, Pink, and Beyoncé at their full-on fiercest joined forces to commandeer the ancient Roman amphitheater with a diva-liciously badass riff on Queen’s “We Will Rock You”… yeah, you don’t actually remember that.
The fond impressions were planted later, Blade Runner-style, by online fandom — because what should have been herstory’s greatest Super Bowl ad of all time never actually aired in America!

Feelgood documentary follows Justin Hawkins’ band as they give even the smallest venues a Wembley Arena level performance
This documentary gives us an entertaining “comeback” narrative arc for the Darkness, the British neo glam-rock band with outrageous campy stylings, sparkly catsuits and real songwriting talent. For a couple of years in the early 00s they were absolutely gigantic, and then crashed and burned, apparently due to lead singer Justin Hawkins’ abuse of drink and drugs. Those were the days when everyone didn’t automatically make solemnly supportive noises about recovery and looking after your mental health: there was more ironic dismissal of addiction burnout as a symptom of rock’n’roll selfishness and absurdity.
But recently, Justin reconciled with his brother, lead guitarist Dan, and the band got back together with bassist Frankie Poullain and a new drummer, Rufus Taylor (son of Queen’s Roger Taylor); they started slogging around...

As the remaining original members still with the band, Brian May and Roger Taylor have been fiercely protective of Queen’s legacy, especially when it comes to the memory of their original lead singer, Freddie Mercury. They were involved with the production of the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, officially as executive music producers, though they unofficially served as advisors throughout the entire project. Both May and Taylor were 100% on board with the casting of Rami Malek as Mercury, especially after they heard the way Malek was able to sing the band’s songs. Queen ruled Baltimore’s Cfg Bank Arena Wednesday night (October 4th) as they kicked off their North American “Rhapsody Tour.”
Original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor — plus vocalist Adam Lambert — spent two hours tearing through over two dozen Queen tunes, with a career-spanning setlist that featured both their biggest hits as well as fan-favorite deep cuts.
Notably, the band played “Is This the World We Created…?” live with Lambert for the first time, and dusted off “Stone Cold Crazy” after more than five years.
May, Taylor, and Lambert were backed by Queen’s longtime keyboard player Spike Edney, bass guitarist Neil Fairclough, and percussionist Tyler Warren, comprising an ensemble whose sound filled the entire arena. It was a night that served as a tribute to Freddie Mercury, keeping his songs and spirit alive without ever overshadowing his bright legacy.

Let me put it this way: Netflix’s latest rom-com, Love at First Sight, took my 4/10 kind of day to a solid 6.5/10. That is me basically saying that the film, which I started watching only for work with less than the bare minimum expectation, made me feel good. There is a severe lack of good romantic comedies these days, which is particularly sad given the chaotic, misery-filled world we live in demands feel-good distractions. And the ones that Netflix churns out every now and then are mostly atrocities in the name of cinema. That is why I would compare coming across Love at First Sight to finding a needle in the haystack.
Amongst the movie genres, romantic comedy is probably the one that is sneered at the most by “Cinephiles.” This doesn’t make any sense to me, considering I have always been an admirer of both Richard Curtis and John Carney.

Founding Duran Duran member and guitarist Andy Taylor claims a new drug treatment is working in his battle with Stage 4 prostate cancer.
In a BBC interview, Taylor said the drug – Lutetium-177 – has extended his life “for five years.”
The 62-year-old Taylor first was diagnosed with the disease in 2018. He went public with the information last November.
After that, a scientist suggested nuclear medicine treatment with Lutetium-177, which reportedly targets cancer cells.
“It can’t see healthy cells,” Taylor told BBC News. He said his first round of treatments was six weeks ago. “It kills stage four cancer in your bones. And so what it’s effectively done is extend my life for five years.”
The drug received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in March 2022 and has “proven to significantly improve prostate cancer survival rates and quality of life, as well as extend the time it takes for the disease to progress,...

Fifty years on from Queen’s debut album, guitarist Brian May reckoned the band would still be rocking the world if Freddie Mercury were still with us. The guitar legend reveals he still “misses the butterflies” he would feel while watching the flamboyant frontman strut his stuff on stage, reports Mirror.co.uk.
“Freddie was a fantastic mate and a great brother,” he said. “I liked it when he broke the rules, what he said to the audience and the risk he took. I am sure if he was here today we would still be doing it and the mothership would still be steaming around the world, because he lived for music and lived for the band – it was his family.”
As per Mirror.co.uk, Bandmates Brian, Freddie, Roger Taylor and John Deacon put out their self-titled first LP on July 13, 1973, on Emi in the UK and Elektra Records in the US.

Swedish singer Loreen won the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night with her power ballad “Tattoo”, at a colourful, eclectic music competition clouded for a second year running by the war in Ukraine.
The diva from Stockholm beat acts from 25 other countries to take the continent’s pop crown at the final of the competition in Liverpool. Finnish singer Käärijä was second in a close-fought battle of the Nordic neighbors.
Loreen, 39, previously won Eurovision in 2012 and is only the second performer to take the prize twice, after Ireland’s Johnny Logan in the 1980s. It’s Sweden’s seventh Eurovision victory, matching Ireland’s record.
“I am seriously overwhelmed,” Loreen said. “This is so beautiful.”

Sweden has won the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, marking a historic double for its victorious artist Loreen.
The Swedish star had previously won in 2012 with ‘Euphoria’, and she repeated the feat on Saturday evening with ‘Tattoo,’ which earned 583 points.
An estimated global audience of close to 180million watched as she collected the prize on stage in Liverpool, UK.
Finland came second, with Israel in third place.
Host country UK’s Mae Muller came second last out of 26 with 24 points, while last year’s winners Ukraine came sixth. Bottom of the board was Germany with 18 points.
Loreen had been the clear favourite going into the evening’s event. She is the only female artist to have won the Contest twice.
The Grand Final interval act began with a performance by last year’s UK runner-up Sam Ryder.

Sweden has won the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.
Swedish contestant Loreen came first with her song “Tattoo,” beating out 25 other countries to garner 583 points. Her win means the contest will likely be held in Sweden next year.
Traditionally the winning country hosts the following year’s contest.
Sweden was followed by Finland’s Käärijä with 526 points and Israel’s Noa Kirel with 362 points, who took second and third place respectively.
This year’s Eurovision took place in Liverpool, U.K. on behalf of last year’s winner Ukraine after it was deemed too dangerous to hold Eurovision in the country following the Russian invasion. Ukrainian entry Kalush Orchestra won last year’s contest followed by the U.K.’s Sam Ryder in close second.
Remarkably it is Loreen’s second Eurovision win: she previously won the contest in 2012 with her song “Euphoria.”

While many bands disband after an essential member dies, such as Led Zeppelin and Nirvana, Queen wanted to keep going. Nobody could replace Mercury, but some fans had ideas. One person many fans suggested was George Michael, and while the singer did perform with Queen, he never joined the band.

There are many comparisons made between The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. While there is a subjective debate about which band made better music, there is no denying that The Beatles were the more successful band. There are many ways in which the bands are different, but guitarist Keith Richards perfectly summed up what made the two bands distinct.

As a tribute ‘Bohemian Rhapsody /These Are The Days Of Our Lives’ was released as a double A-sided single to raise funds for the Terence Higgins Trust. It entered the UK chart at No. 1, where it stayed for five weeks, raising over £1,000,000 for the charity, and Queen became the first band to have the same single top the UK charts twice. In December of that year Queen had 10 albums in the UK Top 100. In 1992 Freddie was awarded posthumously the Brit’s “Outstanding Contribution to British Music” and ‘Days Of Our Lives’ won Best Single. In April, many of the world’s top stars joined Brian May,...

Nearly half a century of playing “God Save the Queen” on his electric guitar has paid off for Brian May. The Queen’s son, now King Charles III, officially knighted the musician on Tuesday. May, age 75, posted a photo of him taking the ceremonial sword to his shoulders, writing that he had “no words” to describe the honor.
Billboard reports that May, who co-founded the band Queen (not to be confused with the Queen), now officially holds the rank of “Knight Bachelor,” which recognizes his achievements in music and charity.

Duran Duran is recalling their special connection to Princess Diana. In a new interview, John Taylor, Nick Rhodes, Simon Le Bon and Roger Taylor tell Et’s Kevin Frazier which of their songs the late royal loved most before her death in 1997.
“When we met Harry and William, they said, ‘Oh, we used to sit in the back seat and mom would play ‘Wild Boys,’ and we will sing along,'” John recalls of Diana’s now-grown sons. “That stuck with me. That idea stuck with me that the little boys would be going ‘wild boys,’ that that would be a moment for them.”
The 1984 track was just one of many Duran Duran songs that Diana loved, a special truth that has stuck with the band all of these years. It’s with Diana’s love of their group in mind, that they signed up to perform at the Party at the Palace,...

I was 13 years old in 1984, and MTV was less than two years old. My friends and I were captivated by “music TV,” and never more so than when British band Duran Duran, which was composed of five good-looking men, captivated Americans with their exotic videos. “New Moon on Monday” was the first song that garnered my attention, and I joined millions of other screaming girls across the globe to become a “Durannie.” And now after a lengthy, undeserved wait, the band enjoys induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England, by guitarist John Taylor and keyboardist Nick Rhodes, along with another friend, Duran Duran named themselves after the villain in the 1968 sci-fi movie “Barbarella.” Band members changed over the next couple of years, and Taylor eventually switched to bass, teaching himself to play. By May of 1980, they had formed the lineup that would soon...

Queen will share a rediscovered and unreleased new track today (13 October), featuring the late Freddie Mercury.
The song, entitled “Face It Alone” will be the band’s first release featuring Mercury in over eight years.
The track was initially teased by guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor in May. It had been discovered when the band’s team returned to original sessions work on The Miracle box set reissue, which will be released in November.
At the time, Taylor said the track was “a little little gem from Freddie that we’d kind of forgotten about”. May agreed, adding that “it’s beautiful, it’s touching”.
“Face It Alone” was originally recorded in 1988 during the making of The Miracle album which was created after the band’s last show together at Knebworth Park, where they famously performed for an audience of around 160,000 people.
During the sessions, the band set down 30 tracks,...
