Dubai Film Market is introducing a selection of Indian projects for the first time this year through a partnership with Europe’s Pjlf Three Rivers Residency.
The five projects are being scripted by hot new talents such as Kanu Behl, whose debut feature Titli premiered at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard in 2014, and Raj Rishi More, whose project is being produced by The Lunchbox director Ritesh Batra.
The Three Rivers residency provides writer-directors with a month-long distraction-free space to work on their scripts in the Italian countryside, with the help of an expert mentor, before presenting their projects at Diff. Although focusing on Indian projects in its first year, the organisers hope to open the programme to international writer-directors, including those from the Arab world, from next year.

Marielle Heller, a New York-based screenwriter, actor and playwright, is attending the June Sundance Directors Lab with her project, The Diary of a Teenage Girl. “In the haze of 1970’s San Francisco, a teenage artist with a brutally honest perspective tries to navigate her way through an affair with her mother’s boyfriend,” is its description, and the film is being adapted from the graphic novel by Phoebe Gloeckner. Here is Heller’s first blog post from the Sundance Resort in Utah.
It’s the end of our first week of four at the Sundance Directors Lab. I feel as though I’ve been here for a month already – in a good way. We’ve spent the first week doing day-long workshops, getting to know each other and our crews, doing practice scenes and acclimating to the altitude.
Gyula Gazdag’s “Using the Camera To Tell a Story” was the workshop on our second day.

The Sundance Institute has selected the Australian film project Partisan for the 2012 Directors and Screenwriters Lab. It is among 13 projects included in what will be an intensive, hands-on workshop, where experimentation and risk taking is encouraged. Partisan is about an 11-year-old boy who is starting to think for himself after being raised to see the world through his parents' eyes; co-writers Ariel Kleiman and Sarah Cynglar have worked together on over 15 productions and closely collaborated throughout. Ariel Kleiman has already had success at the Sundance Film Festival, with his short film Young Love winning an honorable mention in 2010. Another of his short films, Deeper Than Yesterday, has won over 20 awards at film festivals including a jury prize in international filmmaking at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The labs encourage filmmakers to be innovative and visionary. The projects supported receive financial support through project specific grants and ongoing creative and strategic advice.

Los Angeles, CA — Sundance Institute today announced the 13 projects selected for its annual June Directors and Screenwriters Labs, taking place at the Sundance Resort in Utah from May 28 through June 28. Under the leadership of Michelle Satter, Founding Director of the Institute’s Feature Film Program, and the artistic direction of Gyula Gazdag, the projects selected for this year’s program include emerging filmmakers and projects from the United States, Italy, Romania, Australia, Algeria, France, Chile and the UK.
Directors Lab Fellows work with an accomplished group of Creative Advisors, professional actors and production crews to shoot and edit key scenes from their screenplays. Through this intense, hands-on process, the Fellows workshop their scripts, collaborate with actors and find a visual storytelling language for their films in an environment where experimentation and risk-taking is encouraged.

As our offerings for artists continue to grow our hope is that filmmakers have added incentive to remain true to their visions throughout the creative process." This year's filmmakers hail from Italy, Romania, Australia, Algeria, France, Chile, the UK and the United States, but some of their themes appear similar. Today's Sundance Institute announcement on the make-up of this Summer's Directors and Screenwriters Labs offers some insight on the projects we should be seeing in future editions of the festival but also updates us on the progression of some projects we've already got our eyes on -- as is the case with Sean Durkin's upcoming first feature film and Ondi Timoner's (see pic) fictional debut. Almost all projects that were are included in the Director's Lab were a part of the Screenwriter's January Lab earlier this year, so among the newly mentioned projects in the screenwriting portion of the camp we find indie filmmaker starlets Ry Russo-Young (You Wont Miss Me) and Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture - freshly picked up by IFC) are co-writing a project called Nobody Walks with Russo-Young directing the project. Here's the complete press release below -- look for Ioncinema.com to keep tabs on several of these projects.

"A hard-working genius" and "a great Hungarian American" was how the late cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs was described Monday at a tribute to the man and his work in Hollywood. The event was organized by the Consulate General of Hungary in Los Angeles.
Kovacs, said Ambassador Balazs Bokor, Consul General of Hungary, was "a witness of the 1956 revolution in Hungary, the 51st anniversary of which we are going to celebrate on October 23. It was a milestone of Hungarian history, bloodily pushed down by the Soviet tanks. He did not plan to escape from Hungary: He and his life-long friend, Vilmos Zsigmond, left the country rescuing the very precious film made by them about the revolutionary events. He put his fingerprint on the history of filmmaking forever."
The event was hosted by Raleigh Studios in the Chaplin Building and included testimonials and tributes from world-renowned Hungarian and U.S. film luminaries, including Oscar-winning cinematographer Zsigmond. Others included cinema journalist Bob Fisher; Steven Lighthill, senior filmmaker in residence at the AFI; Michael Newport, manager, Raleigh Film; Gyula Gazdag, filmmaker and UCLA professor; USC professor Gabor Kalman; Bela Bunyik, founder and president of the Hungarian Film Festival in Los Angeles; Robert Gyri, president of the William Fox Film Club; and "56 Drops of Blood" director Attila Bokor.
