When The New Yorker first published Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” in June of 1948, the short story was met with confusion and disgust. To this day, apparently the magazine still hasn’t received that much mail over a work of fiction. Regardless of those early negative reviews, though, this shock tale has since gone on to become ingrained in the public consciousness. Everyone remembers their immediate reaction upon reading about a deceptively quaint village where the locals conduct the most heinous ritual every year.
Despite its widespread recognition, “The Lottery” has received only a few screen adaptations over the years. The earliest was in Cameo Theatre, a long lost 1950s anthology series notable for its minimalistic production design. Then there was Larry Yust’s ‘69 short-film; this piece of kindertrauma captures the source material’s unmatched ability to go from casual to ghastly in mere seconds.

Kelly Osbourne is paying homage to her birth decade as the host of the upcoming Axs TV series “The Very Very Best Of The 80s,” TheWrap can exclusively reveal.
The series will examine the big names, big hits and big moments that defined a generation. It “takes viewers on a nostalgia-fueled journey through the bodacious popular culture that made the decade most triumphant—and continues to captivate fans both old and new to this day,” per the channel.
Some of the topics explored in each episode include a breakdown of TV’s catchiest theme songs, top action movie stars, the biggest celebrity couples, the buzziest toys of the decade and the horror movies that continue to define the genre nearly four decades later.

Two bills intended to strengthen safety on California movie sets stalled in the state legislature on Thursday, after Hollywood unions and major studios failed to agree on the best approach.
Both bills — Sb 829 and Sb 831 — came in response to the shooting last October on the set of “Rust” in Santa Fe, N.M. Actor Alec Baldwin fired a gun that was loaded with a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding the film’s director.
Both bills would have established a new training requirement for film armorers. Much of the blame for the “Rust” shooting has been directed at Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the inexperienced armorer who loaded Baldwin’s gun. Gutierrez Reed had no formal training or credential — nor was she required to have any.
But Sb 831, by Sen. Dan Cortese, would have gone significantly farther. It would have codified the industry’s gun safety standards in state regulations.

Saturday Night Live's 40th season got off to a hot start in its first two weeks, but the writing started to seem a little strained during Bill Hader's big return as host. (Also: no acting cameo from musical guest Hozier.) But even the dull nights have great moments, and we've got the three best here for you.

“SNL” pays tribute to Jan Hooks “Saturday Night Live” paid tribute to the late Hooks twice on Saturday: First in primetime, in a 1990 “Vintage SNL” episode hosted by Alec Baldwin. That was followed by a tribute by Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig during the live show, featuring a re-airing of the famous “Love is But a Dream” short film that co-starred the late Phil Hartman. Wiig called Hooks “one of the best there ever was and her influence is clear in everyone of us who’s been here since." “SNL” confirms Jim Carrey as host with musical guest Iggy Azalea Carrey, who returns to “SNL” on Oct. 25, previously hosted in 1996 and 2011. “SNL” brings back Stefon to mock "MTV’s Dan Cortese" — Cortese responds For the first time, Stefon appeared on Weekend Update without Seth Meyers, who was performing in Las Vegas. This season of “Saturday Night Live” has been surprisingly devoid of nostalgia, something I didn’t think would happen in this, the show’s fortieth season. But with former cast member Bill Hader returning tonight, look for that to change. And honestly? That’s fine. I have no problem with the show occasionally celebrating its own history, especially since much of the current cast was there during Hader’s tenure. Look for many of Hader’s classic characters to make a comeback tonight. Will there be a Stefon appearance? One could argue (and I would argue) that the Stefon sendoff was so perfect that any future appearance of the character would dilute that moment. But since Stefon did make another appearance during Seth Meyers’ farewell, anything’s possible. Something that’s not possible but definite: I’ll be liveblogging everything that happens tonight. Also definite: Many of you will rend...

Cast your mind back to summer, 1992. You've been grounded after making fun of your dad's little yuppie ponytail. With nothing else to do, you pull up your really baggy jeans, throw your British Knights up on the coffee table and decide to watch a little MTV. Instead of seeing Dan Cortese in some crap about sports, you watch Liquid Television, and your world is changed. Quick primer for those born after 1990: MTV used to have an amazing animation department. They produced hits like Beavis and Butthead, Celebrity Deathmatch and Daria, as well as many other more obscure series (Aeon Flux, The Head, The Maxx) — all of which can trace their origins back to Liquid Television. Well, they must have noticed you wearing all that flannel again, because the '90s are back on MTV — at least as far as their programming goes. In addition to the Beavis and [...]...

MTV's allergy to nostalgia isn't a pose but a savvy strategy for a channel whose median viewer just stopped having to ask his older brother to buy him beer. Since MTV's 30th anniversary is likely to pass like its 25th, which barely earned an on-air nod, we've traced the brand from its colicky infancy through its earnest preteen years and wayward adolescence to its present as a Snooki-faced memento mori for anyone old enough to remember Dan Cortese's bandannas. Happy birthday, MTV!

Ball and Chain, the comic series written by Scott Lobdell, drawn by Ale Garza, and published by Homage Comics/Wildstorm in 1999, has found its way onto this season's development slate at the SyFy Channel.
The plot? After months of emotional tumult, Edgar and Mallory call their relationship quits. As they say their final goodbyes, the ex-lovers are nearly hit by a meteorite that, it turns out, imbues them with extraordinary powers, turning her into Chain Lightning and him into Thunderball. Unfortunately, the powers only work when they are in close proximity to each other. Though the last thing they want to do is stay together, they’ll need to try if they hope to overcome the newly arrived other-worldly forces that threaten to destroy them and anyone else who gets in the way.
The series is a Universal Cable Productions/Fremantle Media co-production, and Scott Lobdell will be serving as an executive producer.

Many years ago, I had an idea for a show called “The Meal World.” It would be exactly like MTV’s “The Real World,” arguably the first reality show ever featuring 7 strangers picked to live in a house to have their lives taped to find out what happens when people stop being politeand start getting real. Only it would be 7 morbidly obese people. Hooking up. Getting into fights. Eating. “The Meal World.” Would have made me rich. “The Meal World” would never get the greenlight it truly deserved. But thankfully, VH1, the network that pays my rent, has done the next best thing. Money Hungry, a reality show where 10 obese teams of 2 put up $10,000 of their own money for a shot at the entire $100,000 pot. The teams must lose weight lest they get voted off. It’s kind of like NBC’s giant hit The Biggest Loser, only less the...

Today is, I believe, the saddest day of the year. Because, as is tradition following the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, there are absolutely no sports on TV, which is a total bummer (Ok, there are some Wnba games). So naturally, I am left scrambling to fill the void.
I've already called my parents and told them I loved them, rescued a pair of dogs from an all-kill shelter, and donated money to several worthwhile charities, but none of that has brought me the kind of perverse gratification that staring at the lineups of my struggling fantasy baseball teams does (curse you Jacoby Ellsbury!). Perhaps I am obsessed with sports.

New York -- Time Warner and Unilever have renewed a multi-year marketing partnership.
The strategic relationship, first struck in 2007, has focused on aligning Unilever's brands and marketing with the content and audiences of Time Warner.
Financial terms weren't disclosed.
"We recognize that in order to drive strategic growth for our partners and ourselves, we must focus our efforts on delivering premium content, applications and experiences that serve the client's brand and uniquely engage the consumer," said Mark D'Arcy, president of Tw's Global Media Group. "Unilever is second to none in how they apply creativity to the media canvas."
Tw and Unilever's partnership has so far led to such initiatives as a content series featuring Carson Kressley for the Caress brand across digital, in-book and retail outlets. For Knorr, Tw leveraged insights on mothers to produce "Delicious Dinner Diaries" (about busy moms making their family's favorite meals) and distribute the content across Web sites.

Is it just me, or did you also expect a Castle episode revolving around a late night war to be funnier? The show prides itself on its light side, but they played this one too straight. There was just... so much talking. We had so many people to rule out that we had no time for Castle to play with things he shouldn't -- unless you count the actress (Nip/Tuck's Kelly Carlson) sleeping with him to get a role in the Nikki Heat movie -- or for Beckett to get shot at. The late-night debacle that went down at NBC earlier this season could fairly be called a bloody mess. "Castle" takes that idea literally in its next episode.
The ABC murder mystery will take on the cutthroat world of talk-show hosts Monday (April 12) when Castle (Nathan Fillion) is a guest on a show hosted by late-night veteran Bobby Mann ("Dancing with the Stars" host Tom Bergeron) -- and Bobby insists that "They want me dead." Which, sure enough, happens -- giving Bergeron his first chance to play a dead body.
"That was thankfully very comfortable," Bergeron tells Zap2it. "They put a warm blanket on the metal table before I climbed onto it, and I was able to keep my jeans on under the sheet. So being dead was fairly comfortable."
The episode also guest-stars Fred Willard as Bobby's long-time sidekick, Hank. Willard says the episode featured a first for him...

As previously revealed, Castle will soon rip a storyline straight from the headlines:
Tom Bergeron will guest star on on episode this spring, playing Bobby Mann, a talk show host that's murdered by the comedian (Bill Bellamy) who wants his time slot.
We can now confirm that Kelly Carlson will appear in that same installment as love interest for Nathan Fillion’s title character.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Carlson will portray an actress named Ellie Rose. She meets Castle on the set of Mann's late-night talk show.
Fred Willard will also appear on this special Castle episode (as Bergeron’s sidekick), as will French Stewart and Dan Cortese.
Carlson is best known for her long-running role on Nip/Tuck. She's also appeared recently on CSI: Miami and Melrose Place.

During last night's Oscar telecast, trailers for a branded reality-based web series following Rocco Dispirito, Marisa Tomei, and Dan Cortese as they travel through Italy exploring the unique passions of Italian cuisine were nestled between the iPad and Coca-Cola adverts (one of which featured Safety Geeks: Svi's Tom Konkle). In addition to Dr. Horrible himself opening the show and the Lxd teaming up with Debbie Allen for the Best Score performance piece, the web space was fairly well represented. Sponsored by Italian food product company Bertolli and made specifically to help promote their new line of Italian frozen dinners, Into the Heart of Italy marks the company's largest marketing investment ever according to an interview with Gaston Vaneri, a marketing director who oversees Unilever’s U.S. frozen foods business (Unilever owns Bertolli). Being described as "Amazing Race meets Top Chef", the show seeks to promote its product by...

The plot of Castle's upcoming ripped-from-the-late-night headlines episode thickens: Ex-Nip/Tuck star Kelly Carlson has been cast in the episode as a love interest for Nathan Fillion's titular sleuth. Carlson's character, an actress by the name of Ellie Rose, meets Castle on the set of a late-night talk show hosted by the Leno-esque Bobby Mann (guest star Tom Bergeron). The two hit it off (and then some), prompting a jealous Beckett to suspect that the starlet is only interested in Castle because she covets a role in the forthcoming movie version of his book, Heat Wave. As I previously reported,...

First things first: Am I the only one who didn't know that Dan Cortese pronounces his last name in three syllables? Okay, now we can talk about Crash Course, ABC's latest reality offering that really should be on Spike. Each week, five pairs compete in various driving challenges for $50,000 and the "coveted Golden Steering Wheel." Cortese and Orlando Jones emcee the festivities from a should-be-safe distance (although, in last night's premiere, two cameramen almost got taken out). I would say the hosts are the best thing about this show. Jones is quick enough to mock the contestants; Cortese has mastered the look of dismay when one of his jokes goes over their heads. (It can happen!) The challenges, however, were pretty much a letdown. • Slip Slidin' Away: A car is towed, then released on a giant shuffleboard. The team scores points depending on what numbered area the left front tire of their car stops in.

If someone had told you in 1992 that MTV's resident jock, Dan Cortese, would be reincarnated into similarly musclebound, one-speed characters on some of the most successful television programs over the next 15 years (Seinfeld, 8 Simple Rules, Melrose Place), you probably would have been too busy huffing spray paint and listening to Sonic Youth's Dirty to care. The reality is that Dan Dan: The Whopper Man has gotten more television lives than any MTV host deserves, most recently in My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad and Superstars. Tonight, Cortese gets another chance to commentate in wrap-around sunglasses as the the co-host of ABC's new Crash Course.

While ABC's Superstars competition hasn't been performing well in the ratings, the show has been attracting an average of more than three million viewers each week. The millions who turned in to see the finale last night got quite a surprise.
The Superstars teams celebrities with professional athletes and pits them against other pairs in a series of competitions. One duo of players is eliminated each week.
The eight celebs are David Charvet, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Dan Cortese, Paige Hemmis, Julio Iglesias Jr., Joanna Krupa, Ali Landry and Estella Warren. The athlete participants are Jennifer Capriati, Brandi Chastain, Robert Horry, Jeff Kent, Kristi Leskinen, Lisa Leslie, Bode Miller and Terrell Owens.
The show's ratings for this season started off at just 4.27 million viewers with a 1.5/5 rating/share in the 18-49 demographic. The numbers have fallen from there and last week hit a low of 3.15 million and a 1.0/3 in the demo. With numbers like these,...

Anybody who’s ever tried to put together Ikea furniture has learned that even when you start with all the right parts, sometimes they just don’t fit together in the right way. Family Dinner is the first web series created by The Young and the Restless actress Lauralee Bell and her husband Scott Martin. The pilot begins when desperate fame-hungry, mother Karen O’Connell (Bell) has a reality show producer (Dan Cortese of 90’s MTV fame and numerous sitcoms) join her family at the dinner table to document a typical O’Connell meal. At first Karen instructs the family to act "normal" and the producer isn't interested, but once their real dysfunction leaks out, he likes what he sees, and the dinner tapings become a weekly event. The concept is solid. Everybody thinks their family is “a little off”, so we can all get on board with the idea...

ABC has given the green light to the auto-competition show "Crash Course" for a late summer run.
The network plans to air seven one-hour episodes from executive producers Arthur Smith and Kent Weed. Orlando Jones ("MadTV") and Dan Cortese ("Veronica's Closet") will serve as commentators.
"It's going to be visually stunning and hysterical," Smith said. "Nothing brings out the worst in people than sitting in a passenger seat."
Each episode features five couples (such as brother and sister, best friends, spouses, etc.) undertaking four extreme driving challenges. The first three rounds have contestants performing such feats as driving on two wheels or navigating intense weather conditions. Contestants have to work together when, for instance, the passenger is given sole control of the brake.
One couple is eliminated during each round. The final round is the Crash Course, a large obstacle track.

The alphabet network has pulled the Bob Saget sitcom after just four episodes. The show was attracting nearly 10 million viewers, so what's the problem?
Surviving Suburbia centers around Steve and Annie Patterson (Bob Saget and Cynthia Stevenson), heads of a typical suburban family. But, unlike the idyllic sitcom dads of the past, Steve has a cynical view of everything around him. Others in the cast include Jared Kusnitz, G. Hannelius, Jere Burns, Dan Cortese, and Lorna Scott.
Originally slated to air on the CW, ABC picked up the sitcom for a midseason run. Suburbia debuted on April 6th to 12.16 million viewers and a 3.2/8 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The second installment slid to 11.25 million and a 3/7 in the demo. The most recent installment (on April 27th) hit a series low of 9.91 million and a 2.4/6 rating/share. The popular Full House sitcom left ABC in 1995 after eight seasons. Flash forward 14 years later and House star Bob Saget has returned to the world of sitcoms and the alphabet network. Surviving Suburbia has certainly had a rocky journey to primetime but now that it's here, will it stick around?
Surviving Suburbia revolves around the Pattersons, Steve (Bob Saget) and Anne (Cynthia Stevenson), a normal couple that has been married for 20 years, have two children and live in a typical suburb. Unlike the sitcom dads of the past, Steve has a cynical view of everything around him. Others in the cast include Jared Kusnitz, G. Hannelius, Jere Burns, Dan Cortese, and Lorna Scott.
The sitcom was originally slated to start airing on Sunday nights last Fall, as part of Media Rights Capital's deal to lease the CW's Sunday night airtime. During the Summer, Mrc made some changes and decided to hold Suburbia until midseason.

Chicago – ABC’s “Surviving Suburbia” was originally supposed to air on The CW but the network that found a home for “Stylista,” “13: Fear is Real,” and “Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants” decided to leave this Bob Saget sitcom off their schedule after their deal with the show’s production company fell through.
Television Rating: 0.0/5.0 It should have ended there. “Surviving Suburbia” could have been one of many unaired pilots and the world could have moved on. But ABC swooped in and picked it up. The only question worth asking is why anyone at ABC decided to give this horrible show a second chance and how many weeks it will be on before it goes back into the development hell it should have stayed in all along.

I’m almost tempted to recommend “Surviving Suburbia” just so you can appreciate what other sitcoms do well.
