Moore has portrayed series lead Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson across the show’s 7 seasons and serves as a producer. S.W.A.T is a procedural drama that follows Hondo, a Los Angeles S.W.A.T. lieutenant who balances loyalty to the job and the streets where he grew up. The show airs new episodes Friday at 8 p.m.
Following 6 seasons, CBS announced in 2023 that the series was canceled before the network reversed its decision opting to renew the show for a seventh and final season which premiered earlier this year. Following an impassioned campaign led by Moore and the drama’s devoted fans, CBS uncanceled the show once more announcing last month they’d ordered an eighth season.

CBS has been reeling fans in with dramas for over 50 years now, and it doesn't look like the network has any plans to stop.
The network really has something for everybody in its repertoire, whether you're looking for someone quirky and spooky like The Twilight Zone or want a procedural with dramatic flair like NCIS.
There are decades of dramas to be accounted for, but we're going to focus on some of the more recent dramas on CBS.
However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't watch CBS classics like Murder, She Wrote, Gunsmoke, Dallas, The Twlight Zone, and more.
When you're not catching up on older CBS classics, here's what we recommend watching for a more modern setting.

Alex Russell‘s Street may have left 20-Squad behind earlier this season on S.W.A.T. to transfer to Long Beach, but the actor was back on set for the April 26 episode—as its director! (You can check out a photo of him behind the scenes below.) Russell gets behind the camera—he’s not back onscreen—for an episode that sees 20-Squad scrambling to track down a cold-blooded sniper terrorizing Los Angeles, and TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek featuring some intel on their target. “Patrol secured the hallway within minutes of the shooting. No one’s been in or out,” Tan (David Lim) reports before the squad bursts into the open space and clears the floor. But, as Hondo (Shemar Moore) notices and points out to Deacon (Jay Harrington), a hole has been cut out of the window. Bill Inoshita / CBS “This is where he fired from.

Recently, CBS viewers were faced with an update that was, depending on the context, either incredibly disappointing or incredibly uplifting. In early April 2024, it was announced that the network had decided to reverse its decision to end S.W.A.T., starring Shemar Moore, after seven seasons. Instead, there will be at least one more season of the police procedural. So why is the update disappointing, you ask?
Well, at the very least, because despite its popularity, Blue Bloods, unlike S.W.A.T., has not been renewed and is therefore slowly coming to an end.
For nearly 14 years, Blue Bloods has been a staple of Friday night entertainment for many American households. However, the news that the iconic cop drama about the Reagan family will soon be cancelled is also disheartening because the writers may not be able to keep up with such a tight deadline to provide each character and storyline with a proper ending.

Paramount has rebooted Criminal Minds, and starting in November 2022, we were once again immersed in the story of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) agents as they grappled with criminal minds and personal lives. Now, the story has taken an even darker turn, it has been released in a streaming format rather than the traditional TV broadcast one, and the show itself has been subtitled as Evolution. And before we knew it, a new season was already in production (the second season of Evolution and the seventeenth since Criminal Minds premiered on CBS in 2005).
While fans wait in anticipation, the upcoming Season 17 has already had its fair share of details and speculation. Just over a week ago, S.W.A.T. was looking at its series finale airing on May 17. But now, the CBS drama has been uncanceled (for the second time!), and instead, “Twenty Squad” will be the Season 7 finale—though nothing had to be changed, as star and executive producer Shemar Moore tells TV Insider. According to CBS, in the episode, Swat faces their deadliest adversary yet when a violent cell of extremists looks to exact vengeance by blowing up half of Los Angeles, potentially killing thousands. Still reeling from the anger and outrage directed at him by his own community, Hondo (Moore) questions if he still has what it takes to lead 20-Squad, adding to the fear that he won’t be able to pull the team together in time to save the city. With that, “art is imitating life,” Moore tells us. “Shemar—me—wondering, do I need to start thinking about my next chapter?...

“We won this fight,” Shemar Moore, star and executive producer of S.W.A.T., says after the CBS drama’s second uncancellation. And no one is happier than he is that the show is returning for Season 8, as you can see in the video above. In May 2023, a couple of weeks before the Season 6 finale, CBS announced that the show would not be returning. “We kind of got blindsided,” Moore tells TV Insider. He was “numb, confused, a little bit pissed off, a little bit frustrated,” and that led to him the video calling it a mistake, which he carefully considered before posting. “I watched it 12 times before I pushed send,” he says. “I’m not just making that number up; it’s a seven-minute video, so you do the math. I watched it to say, ‘Is this the right thing to do? Can I get in trouble? Am I going to get blacklisted?...

Over the years, the show has gained lots of traction on streaming services like Netflix, even though it isn’t an exclusive there.

The last time fans saw Malcolm Winters (Shemar Moore) in the Young and the Restless (Y&r) was in May 2023 during the show’s 50th anniversary celebrations. He surprised friends and family when he arrived at the Jazz Club to honor Neil Winters (Kristoff St. John).

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for S.W.A.T. Season 7 Episode 8 “Family Man.”] It looks like Deacon (Jay Harrington) has made his mind up about his future with S.W.A.T. after the Luca’s (Kenny Johnson) shooting and subsequent retirement left him questioning things. And while he had been waiting to talk to anyone except for Hicks (Patrick St. Esprit), he and Hondo (Shemar Moore) do have the conversation they probably should have had sooner in the latest episode. It’s all because Deacon’s wife Annie (Bre Blair) spilled to Hondo’s wife Nichelle (Rochelle Aytes) about the plans. Just as Hondo’s lamenting the loss of the “core” group—while looking at a photo from back when Chris was still on the team—Nichelle reveals that it really could be “the end of an era” if Deacon does retire, too. S.W.A.T. is getting another season after all. After previously announcing that the now-airing seventh season would be the show’s last, CBS has had a change of heart and picked up S.W.A.T. Season 8.
The renewal is the latest twist in the S.W.A.T. saga. The show was first canceled back in May 2023 after six seasons. CBS then reversed course and ordered season 7, which was billed as the last for the show. The series finale was set to air May 17. That episode will now serve as the season 7 finale, with an unconfirmed number of episodes to air in the 2024-25 broadcast season.

After months of promoting the final season of S.W.A.T., CBS reversed course Thursday afternoon with the following announcement:
S.W.A.T. has been renewed for Season 8!
The news comes midway through what was previously teased as the seventh and final season.
As you’ll recall, S.W.A.T. was canceled a year ago, before the network walked it back a few days later with a renewal.
The latest twist comes as the hit Shemar Moore drama has been (carefully) wrapping up the storylines of some of the drama’s most beloved characters.
Kenny Johnson’s Luca was written out earlier this month. The character retired after revealing he wasn’t too keen on the idea of desk duty after an injury rendered him unfit to go out in the field with his team.
S.W.A.T. Season 7 is currently delivering huge ratings

CBS Reverses S.W.A.T. Cancellation Again
CBS recently revealed May season finale dates for a handful of shows. That included the series finale of S.W.A.T., scheduled for May 17. The police drama was axed in 2023 but the outcry from star Shemar Moore and fans led the network to renew it for one final season.

Miracles do happen.
We’ve just witnessed one with the renewal of S.W.A.T, which was previously canceled by CBS.
Yes, that’s right, CBS announced today that it has renewed the hit drama series S.W.A.T. for the 2024-2025 season. The series will return for its eighth year on the Network.
Who had this on their bingo cards?
We’ve been riding for so long on the cancellation of popular shows on other networks — even after they’re renewed — that this news hits us like a shower of warm rose petals.
It’s concerning that during S.W.A.T. Season 7, many beloved characters have already said their goodbyes, so either they’ll be looking to walk that back or introduce us to a new team.
That’s a risky move for a series that had already been on the chopping block (and lost its head) once. Well, twice if you consider the original...

Shemar Moore‘s S.W.A.T. is no longer ending on CBS as the network just announced the show will be renewed for an 8th season!
If you don’t know, S.W.A.T. has been on quite the journey at CBS over the last year. Last year, the network actually canceled the drama. Then, after huge backlash, the network reversed their decision and renewed the series for one final season. At the time, they said S.W.A.T. would be coming to an end in the Spring of 2024.

It’s a good day to be a fan of S.W.A.T. as the formerly canceled series has been renewed for an eighth season at CBS following its ongoing seventh season, which had originally been intended as its last. S.W.A.T. will officially be back for the 2024-2025 television season with star Shemar Moore at the front once again, and the renewal hasn’t been designated as a final season either. This is surely welcome news for viewers who were upset in 2023 when the show was initially canceled after Season 6. “Here at CBS, we always ‘stay liquid’ and love a good dramatic twist, especially when it leads to an eighth season of S.W.A.T.!,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, in a statement. “The show continues to resonate with viewers thanks to our talented cast led by Shemar Moore and our amazing writers and producers who keep the show relevant and action-packed.

S.W.A.T. is not ending after all. Beating the odds a second time, the action drama has been renewed for the 2024-25 season, with Shemar Moore set to continue as star and executive producer. I hear Season 8 will consist of 22 episodes.
The news comes a year after S.W.A.T. was canceled before the decision was dramatically reversed a couple of days later with a renewal for a seventh and final season. This time, the network is not boxing itself in and is leaving the door open to more by not branding 8 as the series’ final season.
The surprise renewal, which sources said came down pretty quickly over the last couple of days, also comes as S.W.A.T is wrapping production on its seventh season. Moore hinted at the drama not necessarily ending by posting set photos on his Ig story yesterday with the caption “Season 7 finale will be [fire emoji],” not referring to the episode as series finale.

Turns out reports of “S.W.A.T’s” cancellation have been greatly exaggerated. CBS has renewed the cop drama for Season 8 despite announcing its seventh season would be its last nearly a year ago.
The latest drama marks the second time “S.W.A.T” has technically escaped cancellation, with CBS initially axing the show before announcing it would return for one last run. The original decision to cancel “S.W.A.T” came down to licensing fees. After Sony and CBS were unable to come to terms in 2023, the show was canceled, but they eventually worked out the deal for a final season with a reduced episode count.

After being canceled, then un-canceled, then producing what was billed as its final season, CBS’ Swat is getting yet another new lease on life.
The network has picked up an eighth season of crime drama starring Shemar Moore. The decision to continue the series, a co-production of Sony Pictures Television and CBS Studios, comes as a surprise: CBS has billed this season of Swat as its final one after negotiations with Sony over licensing fees and a reduced episode order. As recently as Monday, when CBS sent out its season finale dates, it was billing the May 17 episode of Swat as a “series finale.”
Now, though, the series is set to return in 2024-25, joining fellow CBS dramas Fire Country, NCIS, NCIS: Sydney, Tracker and all three members of the FBI franchise on next season’s roster (comedies Ghosts and The Neighborhood have also been renewed, and the second half...

S.W.A.T. is certainly leaning into the nostalgia as it nears its series finale (May 17). Two of Hondo’s (Shemar Moore) team have left in recent episodes—Alex Russell‘s Street transferred to Long Beach, while Kenny Johnson‘s Luca was forced to retire after he was shot trying to stop a robbery off-the-clock. Now, in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the April 12 episode, he finds out that someone on his team has been hiding plans to do the same. Hondo’s wife Nichelle (Rochelle Aytes) finds him looking at an old team photo, from back when Chris was still there. “This group was the core for so long,” Hondo says. “It’s hard to get over the change. I mean, Street’s been gone for weeks. I still catch myself looking for his motorcycle in the parking lot. Now Luca’s gone.” That’s when Nichelle points out,...

Before primetime television fans fell in love with Shemar Moore on Criminal Minds, he was a soap opera star. The current star of S.W.A.T. played Malcolm Winters on The Young and the Restless. The big news for the daytime soap opera’s fans is that Moore said he would return to the show.
Here is what Moore had to say about The Young and the Restless.
Shemar Moore Willing To Return To The Young And The Restless
Shemar Moore starred as Malcolm Winters on The Young and the Restless from 1994 until 2005. He also returned with guest appearances in 2014, 2019, and again in 2023. Malcolm is the half-brother of Neil Winters (Kristoff St. John) and had several conflicts with his brother. This includes getting Neil’s wife pregnant. His return in 2019 was after St. John died and Malcolm returned after Neil’s death on the show.

Would Shemar Moore ever return to the soap opera The Young and the Restless or the Criminal Minds reboot?
If you don’t know, the 53-year-old actor starred on The Young and the Restless from 1994 to 2002 as Malcolm Winters. He also made appearances numerous times over the years. He also starred in the original Criminal Minds series as Derek Morgan.

He told First for Women, “If The Young and the Restless called me today, I would go. Because you never forget where you came from. It sounds cliche and maybe cheesy, but it’s also true.” He added he’d return for Criminal Minds, too.

“Now… when I’m unemployed, you might get me on Young and the Restless a little longer. But will I go back for a contract? No,...

As S.W.A.T. comes to an end on CBS on May 17, Shemar Moore is thinking about what’s next, and it could include a return to the long-running daytime soap opera, The Young and the Restless. In an interview with First For Women, Moore revealed he would be open to reprising his character Malcolm Winters on Y&r, the role which earned him a Daytime Emmy in 2000. “If The Young and the Restless called me today, I would go,” Moore said, adding that he’d do the same for another of his former shows, Criminal Minds. “Because you never forget where you came from. It sounds cliche and maybe cheesy, but it’s also true.” Moore played Malcolm Winters from 1994 to 2002 and became one of the soap’s most iconic characters. He’s reprised the role several times over the years, including stints in 2004-2005, 2014, 2019, and, most recently, 2023, for the show’s 50th anniversary.

S.W.A.T. was one of four CBS shows confirmed to be ending this coming Spring on CBS, however, the show’s star, Shemar Moore, recently gave fans a glimmer of hope that it could continue.
When asked about the series, he told Et, “Oh man, its been such a good run. And, you know, this is my 30th year in the game, so I pinch myself. [It's been] seven years of a really fun show. And the word on the street is it’s our final season — but, you know, I’m an optimist.”
“So, if this is the final season, I’ll just say thank you. It’s been an incredible run to play tough guy Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson. Obviously, I’m biased, and there’s no such thing as the best show, but I do think we’ve been a very unique show. It’s like watching an action movie but on TV,...

CBS is ending three of its longest-running series next month, and the network has officially confirmed the series finale dates.
Bob Hearts Abishola is kicking things off with the series finale of the Billy Gardell comedy set for Monday, May 6, at 8:30/7:30c.
The series has been on the chopping block for some time.
Alarm bells sounded for fans last season when CBS confirmed that only Gardell and Folake Olowofoyeku would return as series regulars.
At that point, the fifth season wasn’t revealed to be the concluding chapter of the series, but the news followed months later.
The show has done an admirable job of trying to keep many of the ousted series regulars in play as guest stars and recurring players.

The seventh and final season of S.W.A.T. has delivered plenty of dramatic moments, including a shocking murder attempt in the premiere.
More recently, Kenny Johnson’s Officer Dominique Luca’s fate was left up in the air after he was gunned down in one of the series’ most harrowing scenes to date.
CBS aired plenty of promos that made us think we’d be tuning in to say goodbye to him as he succumbs to injuries, but the show took things in a different direction.
Initially, we learned that he survived the attempt on his life, but following a multi-week time jump, Johnson’s final arc on the show kicked into high gear.
Luca was desperate to recuperate and return to work, but one phone call changed everything.
