Way back in 2003, the hit CBS series Jag introduced its audience to Jethro Gibbs and his crack team of investigators, who focus on navy-related crimes from the forensics and investigative side.
This 'back-door pilot' led the way to NCIS, which is now in its 21st season and has inspired multiple spin-offs.
There's a lot to celebrate about this success, and recently the show paid homage to its roots with a landmark 1,000th episode. However, two major snubs ruffled the feathers of some fans, and for good reason.
All The Way Back To The Start
In episode #1000, appropriately named 'A Thousand Yards', NCIS Director Leon Vance is shot while arguing with his estranged son Jared. When the culprit is revealed to be Jared's new girlfriend, Lindsey Wexler, it doesn't take the team long to discover that she is daughter of sleeper agent Leonard Rush, whom Gibbs took down in the very...

S.W.A.T. is getting another season after all. After previously announcing that the now-airing seventh season would be the show’s last, CBS has had a change of heart and picked up S.W.A.T. Season 8.
The renewal is the latest twist in the S.W.A.T. saga. The show was first canceled back in May 2023 after six seasons. CBS then reversed course and ordered season 7, which was billed as the last for the show. The series finale was set to air May 17. That episode will now serve as the season 7 finale, with an unconfirmed number of episodes to air in the 2024-25 broadcast season.

Sean Murray now holds the distinction of being the longest-running NCIS cast member. However, despite being the stepson of the show’s creator, Donald Bellisario, he still does not feel very secure in his job.
That seems so unlikely as on Monday, CBS will be celebrating the 1,000 episode of the NCISVerse. Yet, he remains uncertain.
Why doesn’t the actor who portrays geeky Agent Tim McGee “feel safe” in his long-time role?

Could the return of two fan-favorite characters to the NCIS universe mean more familiar faces might soon be making an appearance in the CBS franchise? Tony Dinozzo and Ziva David will be the focus of a new Paramount+ spinoff. But what about Gibbs and Abby, two other much-loved characters from the long-running series? In a recent interview, CBS execs commented on whether former NCIS stars Mark Harmon and Pauley Perrette might somebody make their way back into the NCIS fold.

Pauley Perrette’s NCIS character Abby Sciuto is a fan-favorite. Her role as a forensic scientist is easily in the top three most popular characters in the history of the CBS series, including spinoffs.
Perrette left the series back in 2018. However, just recently, some of the decision-makers at the network were asked if her iconic character could return. Moreover, could it be for anything from a cameo to her own spinoff? Here is what they had to say.

Pauley Perrette left her role as the punky, ultra-intelligent forensic scientist wiz Abby Sciuto at the end of NCIS Season 15? Is there any chance she could return? Maybe.
According to a recent Deadline interview with CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach, as well as CBS Studios President David Stapf about this possibility.

NCIS stars Michael Weatherly and Pauley Perrette were both known for their quick humor in the long-running action thriller. But their characters being so funny didn’t always stem from the show’s script. Rather, it was just something they both agreed the show needed.
How Pauley Perrette and Michael Weatherly injected humor into ‘NCIS’ Pauley Perrette, Michael Weatherly, Mark Harmon | John Heller/WireImage
NCIS could be an action heavy program full of stakes and drama. But the series was often able to balance out its darker subject matter with humor. Weatherly and Perrette played a huge part in making sure the show didn’t take itself too seriously.
“Mark and I can create something — just a look between the characters, or some funny physical thing,” Perrette once told TV Guide (via Live Journal). “My job is to take all these long lines and not only memorize and spit them out,...

The NCIS franchise will be airing its 1,000th episode on April 15, and CBS Studios President David Stapf has been involved in every single one of them. Because he was head of CBS current programming at the time, he even participated in the development of the mothership series from Day 1 because it originated as two back-door pilot episodes of an existing show, Jag, that aired in April 2003. He was in on all casting sessions and still remembers Pauley Perrette’s audition that won her the role of Abby in the room.

Fans didn’t see NCIS stars like Mark Harmon on too many projects besides his hit show. Even Harmon, who’d done a few movies in the past, did far fewer films while on NCIS. This actor explained why this was the case.

A few NCIS stars already know what it’s like to do feature films. However, the long-running procedural might be the project they’re all mostly known for. Whereas it wasn’t uncommon for actors on TV to make movies, the NCIS crew mainly devoted time to the show. Pauley Perrette confided that there was more than one reason for this decision.
“When you’re on a sitcom, you work four days a week. You do a couple table reads, you do it in front of an audience, and then you go home.

The NCIS tribute to Ducky aired on Monday night, with several surprises for viewers.
The episode paid homage to actor David McCallum and the character he made famous, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard.
Most NCIS fans had heard David McCallum died during the hiatus between seasons.
The February 19 episode, The Stories We Leave Behind, did well at honoring the character and the man who played him.
Brian Dietzen (Dr. Jimmy Palmer) also wrote the episode, giving it a personal touch that landed well with viewers.
But the tribute episode also referenced many characters from the past, including a guest-starring appearance from Michael Weatherly (Agent Tony Dinozzo).
Did you catch that Gibbs location reference in the episode?
The episode began with Palmer bringing coffee to Ducky’s place. The plan was to discuss a case Ducky was working on, but he passed away in his sleep.

Spoiler Alert! This story contains plot points from Monday’s episode of NCIS.
NCIS on Monday paid its final respects to star David McCallum, who died September 25 at the age of 90.
A fan favorite, McCallum was the last remaining original cast member on NCIS, in which he played an eccentric but highly efficient investigator Donald “Ducky” Mallard for two decades.
As heavily teased in the promos, the episode dubbed “The Stories We Leave Behind” opened with Jimmy Palmer arriving at Ducky’s house to find his mentor — dressed in his monogrammed jammies — dead in his bed, with his sweet corgi looking forlorn in the foyer.

NCIS isn’t going anywhere. More than 450 episodes into its run, the CBS drama about naval criminal investigators hasn’t lost any steam – or the support of the network. The show, which had its 21st season premiere on Feb. 12, isn’t “slowing down anytime soon,” a CBS executive recently promised.

NCIS has said goodbye to many beloved characters over the years.
Sadly, the series will have to say goodbye to Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard following David McCallum's death in September.
CBS and those close to the show have yet to reveal whether a tribute episode is in the works, but there's no way the series will proceed without a fitting tribute to an actor who brought so much to the show.

Who knew that a Jag spinoff about investigating naval crimes would become one of the most popular and long-running shows on CBS? NCIS premiered in September 2003 and has been going strong ever since. However, the show has seen some big changes over the years, including several high-profile cast departures, as well as a subtle name change. Early on, NCIS had a slightly different title to avoid confusion with another popular show on the network.

The shock death of a major character left NCIS fans reeling – and wondering why the show’s writers would kill off Agent Todd. In the past, Alexander has said that her departure was due to the show’s grueling workload. Once the show’s writers knew she wanted to leave, they decided to give her the most dramatic exit possible, insiders explained to The Hollywood Reporter in a recent oral history of the show.

NCIS has been going strong for two decades. But there have been a few times when it seemed like the show might not be able to continue, particularly when fan-favorite characters such as Abby Sciuto and Leroy Jethro Gibbs left the show. In fact, the departure of another key actor felt like a death knell for the long-running series, an NCIS insider recently revealed.

A new NCIS spinoff is coming to CBS. NCIS: Sydney, the first international-set entry in the NCIS franchise, follows a joint team of American NCIS agents and Australian Federal Police officers as they investigate naval crimes in one of the most contested parts of the ocean on the planet. Will the new show fill the void left by NCIS, which has had its season 21 premiere date delayed because of the Hollywood strikes? We’ll have to wait and see, but in the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about NCIS: Sydney.
What is ‘NCIS: Sydney’ about?
In NCIS: Sydney, officers from the Afp – Australia’s equivalent of the FBI – work hand-in-hand with NCIS agents as part of a multinational task force charged with keeping naval crimes in check. But working together doesn’t mean that everyone gets along, as seen in the trailer (via YouTube) when Afp sergeant...

NCIS fans can’t wait to hear more about season 21 — but we’ll be missing one of the most significant characters from the show. David McCallum played medical examiner Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard for 20 seasons, even outlasting Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Before McCallum was cast in the series, serious disagreements existed about him joining the crew. Here’s what a series director said about threatening to cancel NCIS over McCallum.
‘NCIS’ creators were ready to cancel the show if Ducky actor David McCallum wasn’t cast
NCIS fans can’t imagine the series without David McCallum playing Ducky Mallard. While it doesn’t seem like anyone else could play the medical examiner-turned-historian, there was a lot of disagreement regarding McCallum’s casting at the start of the series.
Past NCIS director James Whitmore Jr. recounted the drama to The Hollywood Reporter. “When they cast David McCallum as Ducky,...

For two decades, NCIS has been keeping viewers entertained with its signature mix of humor and high-stakes drama. The CBS series about a team of agents with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service premiered in 2023 and is heading into its 21st season (just as soon as the cast can get back to work). It’s also spawned multiple spinoffs, including a first-ever international version, NCIS: Sydney, debuting later this year. But the show – and by extension, the entire NCIS universe – could have looked very different if the series creators initially envisioned came to fruition.

Pauley Perrette and Wilmer Valderrama have paid tribute to David McCallum, who died Sept. 25 at 90 in New York.
McCallum was the last remaining original cast member on CBS’ NCIS. He played Chief Medical Examiner Donald “Ducky” Mallard, an eccentric but highly efficient investigator with a knack for psychological profiling, for two decades.
Paulette — who played Abby Sciuto from 2003-2018 on NCIS — called McCallum a “legend” and posted a series of pictures of him on Instagram.
“Oh David. What a life. What a legend,” she wrote. “What a journey. And your legacy will always be the love you have for your family. Love to katherine and the kids and the grandkids, your absolutely very favorite things.”

Wilmer Valderrama (Nick Torres) also posted a goodbye message to his former co-star. “David, what an immense honor it was to share the screen with you.

The NCIS cast is in mourning following the tragic news of David McCallum's death at 90.
Deadline reported that the Scottish actor died Monday morning of natural causes surrounded by family at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
"For over 20 years, David McCallum endeared himself to audiences around the world playing the wise, quirky, and sometimes enigmatic Dr. Donald 'Ducky' Mallard," said current NCIS exec producers Seven D. Binder and David North in a statement.
"But as much as his fans may have loved him, those who worked side by side with David loved him that much more."
"He was a scholar and a gentleman, always gracious, a consummate professional, and never one to pass up a joke."
"From day one, it was an honor to work with him, and he never let us down," the statement adds.
"He was, quite simply, a legend. He was also family and will be deeply missed.

It’s always a blow when a fan-favorite actor leaves a beloved show. Loyal viewers are likely to speculate about the real reasons for a cast member’s departure. Add in reports of behind-the-scenes workplace drama, and the situation becomes even more intriguing. Take CBS’s mega-hit NCIS. The long-running show has seen several major stars exit over its 20-season run. But none has generated as many headlines as Abby Sciuto actor Pauley Perrette’s 2017 decision not to return to the procedural drama.

Although NCIS was well-liked from the get-go, not even an elite investigation could have foreseen the show becoming a hit that would span decades and launch a franchise.
It began in spring 2003 as a backdoor pilot for CBS’ sturdy military-law procedural Jag. Co-created by Jag mastermind Donald P. Bellisario (Magnum, P.I., Quantum Leap) and Don McGill (Numbers, CSI), NCIS follows special agents from D.C.’s Naval Criminal Investigative Service, led by Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. The show’s initial core cast included Michael Weatherly (Tony Dinozzo), Sasha Alexander (Caitlin Todd), Pauley Perrette (Abby Sciuto) and David McCallum (Ducky Mallard). Twenty years later, the series continues to thrive, as it stands as CBS’ No. 1 broadcast drama for five straight seasons and has launched four spinoffs, with the first international entry, NCIS: Sydney, debuting this fall on the network.

If Brian Dietzen, aka Dr. Jimmy Palmer, had his way, several fan favorites would be returning to NCIS in the near future. In a recent interview, Dietzen admitted that he would love to create stories for Gibbs (Mark Harmon), Tony (Michael Weatherly), and even Abby (Pauley Perrette), teasing some major reunions as the series heads into the final leg of season 20.

So far, Brian Dietzen (who plays Dr. Jimmy Palmer) has co-written two episodes of NCIS with Scott Williams and adding a third isn’t off the table. But, given that those two episodes came in Seasons 19 (“The Helpers”) and 20 (“Old Wounds”), there are quite a few characters he hasn’t gotten to write for yet, due to cast exits over the years, so for which would he like to do so? “I love so many of these characters. Obviously Gibbs [Mark Harmon], obviously Tony [Michael Weatherly], Ziva [Cote de Pablo], and Abby [Pauley Perrette]. All of these voices are just iconic,” Dietzen tells TV Insider. “So if any one of these were to come back, I would be ecstatic to write for any of them.” It’s hard for him to narrow it down to one, however, because there’s something he’d enjoy for all of them. “Writing for...

However, despite the hospital’s reputation, the staffers cared about their patients, and St. Eligius employed first-rate doctors.
The show followed the employees as they dealt with low funding, lack of up-to-date equipment, and personal and professional lives,...

2023 could be the year of Tiva if Michael Weatherly gets his wish.
The former NCIS took to social media over the weekend and teased a potential return to the CBS procedural drama.
If you watch NCIS online, you know Tiva (Tony and Ziva) were a big part of the earlier success of the series.
It all played out in response to a fan who said, "We all would rather look at you and Ziva reuniting and enjoying that moment."
That message of support led to Michael writing the following:
Stay tuned, for this might be an interesting year for such "moments"!
Weatherly exited NCIS at the close of NCIS Season 13 back in 2016.
At the time, Tony learned that Ziva had died in an attack but that she had given birth several years before to their daughter Tali.
Tony's final arc found him leaving the team to look after his daughter.
