Yesterday, amid a crush of sweaty people desperate for last-minute props, I visited a local Halloween superstore with my daughter, looking for a Pikachu mask. Well, there wasn’t much to choose from in the Cute Kid Division. But this particular hall of Halloween hell definitely had the adult sensibility covered. Of course there were the usual skimpy or otherwise outrageous costumes for purchase —ladies, you can dress up like a sexy Kim Kardashian-esque vampire out for a night of Hollywood clubbing, and gents, how about impressing all the sexy Kim Kardashian vampires at your party by dressing up like a walking, talking matched set of cock and balls! It’s been a while since I’ve shopped for fake tools of terror, but it seems there’s been a real advance in sophistication in the market for “Leatherface-approved” (I swear) chainsaws with moving parts and authentic revving noises,...

If '80s and '90s nostalgists are looking for the perfect wedding band, then consider Scott Bradley's Postmodern Jukebox, who are in the process of going viral for a sl0w jam cover of the “DuckTales” theme song. Yes, that old Disney cartoon following Scrooge McDuck and his three grandnephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie — plus his trusted pilot Launchpad McQuack – on globe-trotting adventures. See video: Christian Bale Sings the ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Theme Song The show, now best known for it's catchy theme and opening sequence featuring McDuck swimming through his giant pool of gold coins, debuted its 100-episode...

Chicago – What is the remedy for the holiday blues? How about a dose of “Liza with a ‘Z’!” The sparkling and funny “We Three Lizas” is back for the holiday season from About Face Theatre of Chicago, just in time for the lights and tinsel. Danielle Plisz, Mark David Kaplan and Bethany Thomas play the three title Liza Minellis, with a deft direction by Scott Ferguson.
Play Rating: 4.0/5.0
Premiering last holiday season, and back by popular demand, the musical play has a merry and bright crafting at the new Stage 773 in Chicago. This is a twist on “A Christmas Carol,” involving New York fashion and trends, with a dose of past, present and heavenly Liza Minnelli. All three Lizas add the pizazz, but it is the amazing Danielle Plisz – as young Liza – that heightens her every scene with an impression that is so amazing, you’ll believe that Ms. M...

Many symphony orchestras now play music from Hollywood’s golden age, but none that I’m aware of has attempted to perform Scott Bradley’s breakneck-paced scores for Tom and Jerry cartoons—until now. I’m indebted to Rob Paquin for sending me the YouTube link to this remarkable performance by the John Wilson Orchestra at London’s Royal Albert Hall, as part of the BBC Proms concert series. In his e-mail Rob writes, “As you can hear from the full house audience, it was a great success and long overdue. John Wilson has been painstakingly trying to restore the original arrangements for classic scores. He is a big fan of MGM's distinctive musical sound when Conrad Salinger and Johnny...

The Dark, the fifth in the line of horror novellas from publisher Ravenous Shadows and editor John Skipp, seems to have a bit of an identity crisis: in some places it feels like prose that wants to be a screenplay, and in other places it feels like a screenplay that wants to be prose. Unfortunately, authors Scott Bradley and Peter Giglio never really settle the argument, resulting in an entertaining but ultimately underachieving book.
Ben Pilot is living the same Hollywood story as a lot of his peers - he's a former television star who has followed a series of bad decisions into some dark corners. He's separated from his wife and daughter, no longer has an acting job, and is instead clerking one of the last struggling video stores in Los Angeles. His ex-wife, Claire, is still learning to adjust to life without the money (and the man) she'd grown accustomed to,...

Full disclosure: Peter Giglio is a friend of mine. The fact is, however, that our friendship grew as a result of our mutual respect for each other's creative work. I don't tend to get too close to people whose work I can't stand; the two things usually go hand in hand.
But not only is Giglio a killer author and screenwriter, he's also just about the hardest-working guy in genre fiction, and his output in words over the past couple of years has well surpassed my own over the past decade. Add to this the fact that he gets quality whenever he's up at bat, and we've got something of a force of nature on our hands.
I've long viewed interviews as an unsung art form, so here I am making art with Peter Giglio:
1) One thing I love about your fiction is that there's a very grounded,...

Every once in a while you get lucky and are reminded why our genre is so great. If I sat around obsessing over every frame of Transformers I doubt I'd be able to contact Michael Bay and talk about why he chose to explore Bumblebee's inner strife.
And if I did, who'd really care? In our genre, it's pretty damned amazing that you can watch a film and with just a few polite keystrokes get in touch with the people who made it and discover that they're just as much film lovers as the rest of us. What follows is a pretty brief but very informative interview that writer/director Eric Shapiro was kind enough to indulge me with.
