This weekend marks the much-noted 50th anniversary of “The French Connection’s” release. “The Manor” perhaps inadvertently stirs memories of another William Friedkin joint, 1990 horror “The Guardian,” which was so disliked by the director that he omitted mentioning it in his otherwise fairly comprehensive memoirs. This addition to the second “Welcome to the Blumhouse” quartet of genre features likewise offers an evil tree-entity, to perhaps less campily absurd results — which is both a good and a bad thing.

SAG-AFTRA’s upcoming election is taking shape, with the union’s ruling party – headed by presidential candidate Fran Drescher – today unveiling its full slate of candidates.
Yvette Nicole Brown is running for president of the Los Angeles local, and Ezra Knight is running for president of the union’s New York local – each as part of the ruling parties’ Unite for Strength and Usan slate. Brown, a national board member, is nominated for an Emmy for A Black Lady Sketch Show, and Knight, who co-starred for many years on Law & Order, is the New York local’s vice president and a national board member.
“I believe nothing in our union works unless we are all working together,” Brown said. “As L.A. president I will advocate for each and every member and lead with kindness and respect. It’s been a tough time for us as work here in...

Daniel Clowes’ comics creation receives an A-Plus film adaptation through the directorial filter of Terry Zwigoff. The show has more going for it than the bleak alienation of disaffected quasi- gen-Xers — the script offers a depth of character revealing the insecure, hopes and fears behind all the insulting attitudes and behaviors. It’s caustic, funny and also strongly affecting.

Deranged killers, gore, Poe, and plenty of Brad Dourif. Here's our pick of 20 great, underappreciated films from the 1990s...
It's sometimes said that the 1990s wasn't a great time for horror films. But while lots of disappointing franchise sequels crowded their way into cinemas or the lower shelves of video stores, there were also plenty of fantastic examples of the familiar chill. Bernard Rose's Candyman was one of the very best of the decade; Wes Craven's New Nightmare was an intelligent reworking of a flagging series; The Ring introduced a new strain of Japanese horror to a global audience.
Then there are the less well-known horror movies from the decade - ones which either didn't do very well in the cinema or didn't make it to the big screen at all. With the exception of one Japanese film, we've gone for a selection of films...

A Christmas Story 2 is the “official sequel” to the original Christmas classic that is rightfully going straight to Blu-ray/DVD on October 30th and will hopefully be forgotten immediately.
Directed by Brian Levant (Jingle All the Way), A Christmas Story 2 stars Braeden Lemasters (Easy A) as Ralphie with Stacey Travis (Ghost World) playing the mother and Daniel Stern (Home Alone) as the Old Man. The trailer looks really bad, it’s like a checklist of things they want you to remember from the first movie – then why not just watch that again? Now I’m angry.

I don't know who thought that it would be a good idea to make a sequel to the classic 1983 film A Christmas Story, but it looks terrible. If they wanted a sequel they could have at least made a good film! A Christmas Story 2 is being labeled an "Official Sequel". Back in 1994 another sequel was attempted called It Runs in the Family, which later released on DVD under the title My Summer Story. That was a crappy sequel as well.
Here's the Synopsis:
The original, traditional, one-hundred-percent, red-blooded, two-fisted, All-American Christmas continues five years later, with Ralphie (Braeden Lemasters), Randy (Valin Shinyei), Mom (Stacey Travis), and the Old Man (Daniel Stern). This time, Ralphie has his eyes fixed on a car. But trouble is sure to follow.

The Christmas Story sequel no one asked for is coming this October 30, what a scary coincidence, just in time for Halloween. Brian Levant (Jingle All the Way) directed the sequel that looks at Ralphie as a teenager who wants a Red Ryder 1938 Hupmobile Skyline Convertible for Christmas, see what they did there? Daniel Stern plays Ralphie’s “Old Man,” Stacey Travis his mother, and Valin Shinyei is brother Randy.
Interestingly enough, this has been attempted before with a 1988 with Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss (Jerry O’Connell played a young Ralphie), and then again in 1994 with It Runs in the Family (or My Summer Story) with Kieran Culkin as Ralphie.
Movies.com reported this and has the box art (see below), hey remember Leg lamp? They thought you might!

Just when you thought the concept of direct-to-dvd sequels had been all but replaced by remakes and reboots, along comes Warner Home Video to remind us that Dtv flicks are still alive and well... and equally as frustrating. Apparently someone out there thought it was a good idea to create a sequel to the timeless holiday classic A Christmas Story without any of the original cast or creative team (admittedly, director Bob Clark and writer Jean Shepherd are no longer with us). Thirty years have passed since the original film was released but somehow Ralphie is only a teenager in this sequel, which certainly makes for some chronological confusion (I assume it is set in the 1940s?). Either way, Ralphie now has his sights set on a new toy for Christmas: a 1938 Hupmobile Skyline Convertible, which sounds slightly safer than a Red Ryder Bb Gun. Braeden Lemasters (Men of a Certain Age) will play Ralphie,...

Yes, friends, whether you like it or not we're finally getting that long-awaited Christmas Story sequel no one ever asked for this October 30, courtesy of Warner Home Entertainment, which means it's going straight to DVD/Blu-ray. Daniel Stern will play Ralphie's "Old Man," while Stacey Travis is his mother, and Valin Shinyei is brother Randy. Don't worry, both Flick (David W. "Ahhh..." Valentine's Day! That magical, adorable time where those in the springtime of their lovin' prove that love means.... oh lord... pick your own cliche. This is a horror movie review website, folks. I'm not talking about that silly, sugary notion of kissy-kissy, huggy-huggy. I'm talking about S - E - X! That staple of a million horror films past (the Friday the 13th series comes to mind instantly or just about anything from David Cronenberg), present (Black Swan anyone?), and, I'm sure, future. Looking for some deep, meaningful penetration... of the heart.... of the mind, or maybe another organ or limb? Some scenes that will scare the pants right off of you and your significant other? Then look no further then some of mine (possibly yours) favorite scenes in horror film boinking.

In a Screen Actors Guild election that was widely considered a referendum on merger with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, proponents of that idea emerged with a clear mandate. When the results of SAG's 2010 national board of directors election were announced Sept. 23, MembershipFirst, the SAG faction that emerged from the group of actors who helped scuttle merger in 2003, lost the fight for all 13 Hollywood-based national seats up for grabs to its rival faction, the pro-merger Unite for Strength. MembershipFirst partisans had held all 13 of those seats. The loss hands the coalition of Hollywood, New York, and regional moderates who had held a slim majority of the national seats—and who have been vocal in support of merger—a commanding boardroom advantage.Even more striking is MembershipFirst's loss of its majority on the Hollywood board. Unite for Strength won an overwhelming 33 of 35 open seats. Ufs, formed in...

SAG yesterday released the official list of candidates for its upcoming national board elections. Notably, all of the open seats in La (the Hollywood Division) are held by MembershipFirst members, which means that, as was the case last year, Mf can at best maintain its level of representation on the national board. More likely, it will lose some of its board seats.
On the Hollywood divisional board, Mf could gain or lose, as all division seats are up every year. This contrasts with the national board, where approximately 1/3 of the 69 seats are up in any given year. The president and secretary-treasurer, who are ex officio members of the board, have two-year terms, and are not up for election this year.
Ballots in Hollywood and New York will be mailed on August 24 with a return deadline and tabulation on September 23. Election results are expected to be announced that evening.

Jeff Garlin, Ron Perlman, Clark Gregg and Gabrielle Carteris are among the candidates from the Unite for Strength party vying for seats on the Screen Actors Guild's national and Hollywood Division boards.
Ufs announced Wednesday its full slate of 35 candidates, which includes 15 Hollywood board incumbents and a number of first-timers. Ballots go out to Hollywood Division members August 24 and must be returned by Sept. 23, when results will be tallied.
A first round of preliminary discussions with employers for a new TV-theatrical contract begins four days later. That deal expires June 30.
The Ufs party, which is part of a majority coalition that now runs the guild, was founded in 2008 in the midst of inter-union strife and took the hotly contested presidency last fall with its candidate Ken Howard.

Hardware Directed by Richard Stanley In a post-apocalyptic future somewhere in a radioactive desert, terminally ill Moses Baxter (Dylan McDermott) has just returned from scavenging for whatever waste he may find that could be of use to him either back home or for sale. Along his journey he discovers some robotic parts from some unknown android which he brings to his dope-smoking sculptor girlfriend Julie (Stacey Travis) as a Christmas present. She incorporates it into her latest piece, but neither of them is aware that the hardware is actually a robot programmed to kill humans. After settling in and reconnecting following his long absence, their reunion is cut short when the robot awakens, reassembles itself and resumes its original purpose as a government-sponsored population control droid. Despite few similarities, Hardware was dismissed by most as a rip-off of The Terminator. In fact, the film was heavily...

“This is what you want…this is what you get…this is what you want…this is what you get…” Public Image Ltd. chants under the end credits of Richard Stanley’s Hardware. If what you’ve been wanting for the last decade is a worthy disc release of the 1990 sci-fi shocker, what you get from Severin Films’ recently issued two-dvd set and Blu-ray is everything you could imagine, and a few things you probably couldn’t.

The 1990 killer cyborg movie Hardware, now available as a 2-disc DVD, is important for various reasons: the low budget film's successful release in the U.S. helped bankroll a then-fledgling company called Miramax; it made a semi-star out of the largely unknown Dylan McDermott; and it also features a cameo from Carl McCoy, lead singer with U.K. goth-rockers Fields of the Nephilim, whose unearthing of a robot head in some post-apocalyptic desert wasteland at the start of the flick ultimately proves bad news for pretty much every other character. Okay, maybe McCoy's cameo isn't all that "important" an event...

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories...

Ahead of their October 13th DVD & Blu Ray release of Richard Stanley’s 1990 sci-fi epic “Hardware”, the fine folks over at Severin Films have produced a new promo video featuring Lemmy of Motörhead. In the video, Lemmy recreates his cameo role from the movie as a cab driver recalling nostalgic memories from the past as he drives through a now dystopian wasteland. It was the movie that stunned audiences, shocked the MPAA and marked the debut of one of the most uncompromising filmmakers in modern horror. Golden Globe® winner Dylan McDermott (The Practice, Dark Blue) stars as a post-apocalyptic scavenger who brings home a battered cyborg skull for his metal-sculptor girlfriend. But this steel scrap contains the brain of the M.A.R.K. 13, the military’s most ferocious bio-mechancial combat droid. It is cunning, cruel, and knows how to reassemble itself. Tonight, it is reborn…and no flesh shall be spared.

In a victory for the SAG moderate coalition (Unite for Strength / Usan / independents), the Ufs candidates for president, Ken Howard, and secretary, Amy Aquino, won the union's national offices.
However, the election was close: Howard's total was slightly less than the two hardline candidates added together (Anne-Marie Johnson and Seymour Cassel) and Aquino's was slightly more than that of incumbent Connie Stevens. So the union is still very divided, and Howard acknowledged that the results were not a landslide and that the union is very divided, while saying that he planned to reach out to Mf supporters.
On the national board, the moderates showed strength as well: They picked up 4 of 11 seats in Hollywood and held all of the NY and regional (Rbd) seats. I estimate that this brings the moderate's board majority to around 60%, vs. 40% for Mf, but that's a very rough calculation and I'm not sure at this point.

There are surely more conflicts to come, but the Screen Actors Guild membership on Thursday night settled a big one: Ken Howard has been elected the union's new national president.
Running mate Amy Aquino beat two-time incumbent Connie Stevens in the race for secretary-treasurer. Howard and Aquino will serve two-year terms beginning Friday.
For the moment, at least, the outcomes indicate that a winning 47.2% of the voting segment of SAG's roughly 120,000 members prefers the less strident approach of the self-styled moderate wing of the party represented by Unite for Strength.
Howard collected 12,895 votes, or 3,989 more than MembershipFirst candidate Anne-Marie Johnson, who received 32.6% of the 27,295 votes cast. Independents Seymour Cassel and Asmar Muhammad garnered 17.7% and 1.5%, respectively, in their bid for the presidency.

SAG's filing deadline for fall elections came and went Thursday, and it remains unclear who will face each other for the presidency. Only Unite for Strength, formed last year in opposition to the MembershipFirst faction led by SAG president Alan Rosenberg, has gone public with its complete slate.
Ken Howard will lead the charge as Unite for Strength's candidate for president, and Amy Aquino will run for secretary-treasurer. Unite for Strength also will field 33 candidates from the guild's Hollywood Division for seats on the national board of directors.
Months ago, Rosenberg stated provisionally that he will seek a third term, but first national vp Anne-Marie Johnson or another candidate could heed the call to represent MembershipFirst in the elections.
On the eve of MembershipFirst announcing its slate Sunday during a scheduled fundraiser, the Unite for Strength candidates took direct aim at and issue with their political opponents of the past year.

Richard Stanley's cult classic Hardware finally makes it's way to UK DVD on the 22 Jun 2009. It's long over due this one and with sub par euro editions and obscenely expensive Oop region 1 versions being the only option film collectors across the pond will want to pick this up as well (assuming you have region free equipment).

"In the post-apocalyptic, post-nuclear world of Hardware, our worst environmental fears have come true. Temperatures hover at a balmy 110 degrees in the shade and the omnipresent radiation has wreaked havoc with the societal gene pool. For your entertainment there is a 24-hour television broadcasting porno films and heavy-metal music videos. SAG and AFTRA announced yesterday that their combined paid-up membership, about 132,000 members, overwhelmingly ratified the contracts between the unions and the advertising industry. The result was expected, as there was no organized opposition. About 28% returned their ballots, about typical. Of those voting, about 94% voted yes. The deals expire March 31, 2012.
The news from the TV/theatrical side is nowhere near as placid. The ballots went out a few days ago—they’re due back June 9—and SAG’s conducting a series of town hall meetings across the country. The first was last night in Hollywood, and the fur flew. About 600 people attended according to a staff count; although the crowd was reportedly 70% composed of hardline Membership First partisans, they didn’t manage to fill the room. That’s a bit surprising. I’d expected an overflow crowd, given their (apparent?) strength in Hollywood.
What they slightly lacked in numbers, they made up in volume and conviction,...

After many years of false starts (and announcements), Richard Stanley’s sci-fi/horror cult classic Hardware is finally set to make its U.S. DVD debut, and will appear on Blu-ray as well. Fango got the scoop that Severin Films will release the film on extras-packed discs this fall.
Hardware stars Stacey Travis as a woman living in a postapocalyptic future who is given some robot scraps by scavenger Dylan McDermott; the pieces soon reconfigure themselves into a murderous robot, with plenty of bloodshed ensuing. Trimmed to avoid an X rating by original distributor Miramax for its 1990 release, the movie will be presented in uncut, uncensored form, transferred from Stanley’s personal print. Extras will include:
• Audio commentary
• Deleted scenes
• Behind-the-scenes footage
• Stanley’s never-before-seen hour-long Super 8 version
And possibly more; retail price info and cover art are coming soon. “They say, ‘Once in every generation a plague shall fall upon you,...

The SAG board’s moderate majority fired National Executive Director Doug Allen today by using a document signed by board members and called a “written assent.” Much to my surprise, Allen chose not to fight and instead emailed the SAG staff acknowledging that he had been terminated and saying goodbye. A copy of the email is below.
Perhaps one reason Allen agreed so readily is that—as has not previously been reported—the assent provides that his contract will be paid out in full. The assent itself has not previously been released. However, I’ve received a copy. See below.
A natural question is how the process unfolded. I spoke to two sources close to the situation who laid out the following narrative:
At around 11:00 a.m. Monday morning, a group of board members went to SAG’s La headquarters. The group included Unite for Strength leader Ned Vaughn,...
