Beneath every placid surface and between each crashing wave, the movies’ most magical aquatic adventures portend the possibility of mermaids. Half-human, half-fish creatures swam onto the big screen at the turn of the 20th century, appearing in silent works such as Georges Méliès‘ 1904 short film “The Mermaid” and John G. Adolfi’s 1918 feature “Queen of the Sea” among others. The mythical archetype was subsequently reeled in as the effervescent love interest template for numerous ’30s and ’40s rom-coms, with the concept perfected in Irving Pichel’s well-loved talky “Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid,” starring Ann Blyth.
The siren songs characteristic of these mysterious ocean-dwellers even resulted in a string of MGM aqua musicals. Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” brought the mermaid musical to the animation-loving masses in 1989, winning Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “Under the Sea” at the Oscars. Lili Reinhart doesn’t want viewers of “Look Both Ways” to think that one of her character’s split storylines is the correct choice or ‘better than the other path.’
“You can obviously walk away from the film thinking ‘Oh, I really resonated with that path’ or ‘I really resonated with that one,’ but we wanted to make sure that one wasn’t a clear ‘Ding, ding, ding! That was the right one,’” she said.
Reinhart’s character Natalie Bennett faces two very different sets of circumstances after she sleeps with her friend Gabe (Danny Ramirez) and takes a pregnancy test the night of her college graduation. In one scenario, Natalie does not get pregnant, and her nausea gets chalked up to bad 7/11 sushi. In the other, she does get pregnant, and her whole post-college plan changes.

Netflix’s new political drama, Purple Hearts, has received an onslaught of backlash since its release on July 29. Now, star and executive producer Sofia Carson, and director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum are responding to critics and defending the film. It co-stars British actor Nicholas Galitzine.
The love story follows a liberal musician who marries a conservative Marine in order to get health insurance. This particular take on the “opposites-attract” cliché left a bad taste in some viewers’ mouths, and the film has been accused of racism, misogyny and queerphobia. Viewers have pointed to offensive quotes like “to life, love, and hunting down some goddamn Arabs, baby!” and “what exactly would you like me to do? Go over there and teach them pronouns?”

For the first time in her career, Sofia Carson got to be part of a film from the moment pre-production began until the very end — and then some. In fact, five years ago when director-producer Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum met Carson on “Pretty Little Liars: Perfectionists,” the two clicked immediately. Rosenbaum asked one of her producer friends to keep an eye out for a script the two could do together. Two weeks later, she received “Purple Hearts.”
“I remember I read it in a hotel room in Portland and I thought, everything that I’ve been feeling — the frustration I’ve been feeling in the world, as the two sides of the aisle have become more and more divided, it’s kind of represented in this,” the director explains. “But in a hopeful, romantic bow — where it’s not in your face, it’s just that the themes are explored. The film follows Cassie (Carson) a liberal singer-songwriter who marries a conservative Marine, Luke (played by Nicholas Galitzine), so she can get health insurance and pay for insulin which she needs to treat her Type 1 Diabetes.

The numbers don’t lie. Currently in its second week, Netflix’s “Purple Hearts” has been watched for more than 100 million hours. The drama, starring Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine, follows a liberal musician who agrees to marry a Marine in order to get health insurance.
While the movie has become a huge hit on the streaming giant, it has also faced criticism about misogynistic and racist themes; during one scene, a Marine makes a toast and says, “This one is to life, love and hunting down some goddamn Arabs, baby!” While Carson’s Cassie calls him out before storming off, Galitzine’s Luke brushes it off and it’s soon forgotten, as are his more conservative views she was once unhappy about.

Perhaps, one day, somebody will make a film in which a hastily arranged marriage of convenience between two virtual strangers doesn’t blossom into real love, and instead more tensely culminates in mutual acrimony and cathartic divorce. Until then, those inclined can moon over drippy, dopey fantasies like “Purple Hearts,” an opposites-attract romance that — give or take an Iraq War backdrop and some current social-justice talking points — could have been made at any point in the last 70-odd years. Principally a vehicle for Disney-reared singer-actor Sofia Carson, as an independent-minded Latina singer-songwriter who marries a conservative Marine for insurance benefits, only for military tragedy to bring them closer together, this glossy but gloopy Netflix original is primarily out to serve its leading lady’s legions of fans, some of them perhaps young enough not to have seen it all before.

In the frequently picked-over corpse of author Charles Perrault’s classic story “Cinderella,” centered on a servant girl who rises from obscurity after falling in love with a prince, lie such themes as perseverance, hope and the value of being a dreamer. These are the cornerstone principles of the Disney corporation, founded by a fellow dreamer who, similar to the plucky protagonist in the fairy tale, made a wish and saw it come true. Though the studio has plundered these riches before with the likes of the popular 1997 TV movie musical and 2015’s lavish live-action feature, Disney+ original “Sneakerella” amounts to a modernized, more tween-oriented telling. Director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum’s re-sole of the story, which sees a talented teen fantasizing about designing sneakers for sports royalty, delivers a poignant take on the 1950s animated film it partially cannibalizes.

Chosen Jacobs (“It”) and Lexi Underwood (“Little Fires Everywhere”) are starring alongside four-time NBA champion John Salley in the Disney Plus original film “Sneakerella,” which is now in production.
The pop/hip-hop musical aims to leave a sneaker culture imprint on the “Cinderella” fairy tale. Set in the avant-garde street-sneaker subculture of New York City, the film introduces an aspiring sneaker designer from Queens who works as a stock boy in a shoe store. Forced to hide his artistic talent from his overburdened stepfather and two mean-spirited stepbrothers, his luck changes when he meets the fiercely independent daughter of a legendary basketball star and sneaker tycoon. Salley plays the tycoon.
Jane Startz (“Ella Enchanted”) and Rachel Watanabe-Batton (“I Pity the Fool”) serve as executive producers, with co-executive producer Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum (“Ramona and Beezus”), who will also direct the film.

In Beacon Heights, a seemingly perfect town, a group of three college
friends struggle with the stress of being overachievers. In the aftermath
of the town’s first murder, each Perfectionist hides behind a secret, a
lie and an alibi. (Freeform/Allyson Riggs)Freeform announced new and returning series on Tuesday, including Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, whose cast includes current General Hospital actress Hayley Erin.
The recently re-branded network continues to build its roster of quality programming that speaks to the young adult consumer who has embraced its authenticity, evident in recent multi-platform hits "grown-ish," "Siren" and the critically acclaimed "The Bold Type." In addition to strong female representation on-screen, the network champions and has built an impressive, inclusive roster behind the scenes. Half of Freeform's episodic directors are female, diverse, or Lgbtq, 60% of series writers are female or diverse, and every original series on the network has a female producer.

After Spider-Man: Homecoming offered a very fresh take on the wallcrawler’s mythos, it only makes sense that the sequel would add its own unique interpretations of classic Spider-Man supporting characters, as well. A week ago, for instance, word arrived that Gwen Stacy, one of Peter Parker’s most iconic love interests, would be joining the McU in the follow-up. The twist is, though, that the character will be portrayed as a high school exchange student.
Now, a second piece of evidence has arrived that further supports Gwen’s inclusion in Homecoming 2. Following on from an audition tape from a young French actress hoping to play the part, another has appeared online from Iris Haller, who was born in Luxembourg. Her audition was shared on Vimeo, with comments suggesting she’s responding to a call from agents for European actresses to try out for Gwen.
Though Spider-Man fans might initially...

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a Spider-Man movie for a new generation -- a generation that desires to see a franchise reflective and representative of the world they currently live in. Yes, Tom Holland's Peter Parker still has to balance crime fighting with homework; and yes, he's still white, but the cast of characters around him are not.
"That was the intention. You know, because it’s 2017," John Francis Daley, who co-wrote the film with Jonathan Goldstein, told Et at the movie's Los Angeles premiere on June 28.
"It was also important to make this the real world. The Marvel universe lives in a real sort of place, so we wanted to be a part of a real school. The real school is in New York," added Goldstein.

We’re swinging ever closer to the release date of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the much-anticipated first Spidey solo movie to come from the unprecedented deal between Marvel Studios and Sony. With only a couple of months left to go now before it arrives, the studio is continuing to tease us with new promotional material and the latest arrives in the form of a few stills, which you can see below.
We say tease because this set of images hold off on the Spider-Man-centric part of the movie and instead highlight Peter Parker’s high school life. Specifically, we have a shot of Peter (Tom Holland) and his best friend Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) in the school hallway, one of Peter getting stuck into some classroom science and another one of him skulking through the deserted halls with Ned looking shocked to the side. Lastly, the fourth image spotlights Peter and Liz Allen...
