Jerry Abbott, the father of late Pantera members Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, has died at the age of 80.
The news of his passing was reported by his friend Danny Wood Sr., who wrote on social media, “I’m very sad to tell everyone of the passing of a close friend Jerry Abbott. He died last night in a Denton care giving facility. His Family is having a private Funeral for Family and close Friends with a Memorial Service being planned. Details soon.”
Jerry, who was a musician and recording engineer, was an instrumental figure throughout Pantera’s formative years. He managed the band and co-produced their albums during their pre-Cowboys From Hell days in the ’80s.
In 2014, 10 years after the death of Dimebag, Jerry released the autobiography Over My Shoulder: The Life and Times of Jerry Abbott, in which he detailed his relationship with his sons.

The revamped Pantera have made it their mission to honor late brothers Dimebag Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums) on their ongoing tour. On Saturday night (February 24th) in Baltimore, a young fan’s resemblance to Dime caught the attention of singer Philip Anselmo.
Seeing the fan with a curly mop of hair on his head brought back memories for Anselmo, who recalled his first meetings with Dimebag. “Some people might believe in reincarnation and stuff like that,” the Pantera frontman said from the stage. “There could be a younger Dimebag right up front … Dude, just shake your head like that and everybody in the whole place will see it. Hey, turn up the lights here. Show ’em. Look at that guy.”

“When I was first met Dime, his lid was exactly that length,” continued Anselmo, who invited up the fan to join the band onstage.

Pantera kicked off their 2024 North American tour with Lamb of God on Saturday (February 3rd) in Sunrise, Florida, and the set featured a welcome surprise for diehard fans.
The reunited metal legends — featuring classic members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown alongside Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante — performed a 14-song career-spanning set. The unexpected highlight came when Pantera revisited the dark, seven-minute masterpiece “Floods,” the first performance of the standout track from The Great Southern Trendkill since 2001. A fan favorite, “Floods” is one of the group’s more artful and doomier moments, warranting comparisons to one of Philip Anselmo’s other projects, Down.

Kerry King just unveiled full details of his eponymous solo project, including the band lineup, the debut album, and the first single. At the same time, the guitarist also gave a brutally honest interview to Rolling Stone, declaring that fellow Slayer founder Dave Lombardo “is dead to me.”
When asked if he’s spoken with the drummer since Slayer fired him in 2013, King bluntly stated, “No. Lombardo is dead to me.” He went on to bring up the financial squabble that led to Lombardo’s sacking from the legendary thrash band.
“He went on that tirade when we were on a flight to Australia, and he knew we couldn’t retort for 14 hours, and he threw me under the bus,” said King. “I was the only one keeping him in the band. Tom [Araya] wanted him out before that, and [the late] Jeff [Hanneman] had just gotten the spider bite, so he wasn’t playing with us much.

Down — the metal supergroup featuring singer Philip Anselmo (Pantera) and guitarists Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity) and Kirk Windstein (Crowbar) — have begun working on their first new songs in nearly 10 years.
The veteran sludge act, which also includes drummer Jimmy Bowar (Eyehategod) and bassist Pat Bruders (ex-Goatwhore), has not released any new music since unveiling the EP Down IV – Part II in May 2014.
On Thursday (December 28th), Windstein shared a photo of himself and Keenan in the studio via Facebook (see below), with the caption, “So…we kinda wrote 2 Down songs today!!!”
Back in October, Windstein discussed what Down’s future would look like with Anselmo playing Pantera shows again. He told the Loaded Radio podcast (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), “Phil’s attitude is kind of just like, ‘Look, fellas, I’m doing what I’m doing [with Pantera]. I love it. Philip Anselmo has finally opened up about the Pantera reunion in one of his first interviews since the legendary metal band re-formed with guitarist Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante.
Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown recently appeared on an episode of The Metallica Report podcast, and the singer made what would appear to be his first public comments on the Pantera reunion.
“It’s empowering,” Anselmo said of the reunion gigs [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “It is incredibly beautiful, and you feel so much love when you’re up there. And if you take it in, it’s a great feeling, man. These days, man, that’s where me and Rex, you know, we get to dig the shows more.”
He continued, “When we were younger, we were at war and when we were onstage; we were just angry and at war, man. Now it’s — the songs are there. I can concentrate on singing the fricking songs,...

Kerry King has teased what appears to be a 2024 reveal of his long-awaited post-Slayer project.
The guitarist kept things vague, sharing an image of his iconic chain, which he wore for years while performing with Slayer, resting on what looks to be the floor of a stage. The caption reads: “Coming in 2024…”
The image is a callback to the symbolic moment when King removed his chain before lifting it and letting it fall to the stage floor at the end of Slayer’s final concert in 2019 at The Forum in Los Angeles.
“One of the reasons I did the chain drop at the last show was so everybody in the building could hear it,” King later told Dean Guitars in a 2020 interview. “And it wasn’t something I planned. We were doing the last run, and I said, ‘I wanna do this on the last Forum show so people take it more seriously.

Pantera were set to be one of the big draws for Aftershock festival this year, but fans will have to wait another year to see the legendary metal act perform at the four-day rock extravaganza in Sacramento, California. The band has dropped off the 2023 lineup, but has promised to play the 2024 edition of the fest.
In a statement on social media, Pantera cited “circumstances beyond our control” without offering any more details on the reason for the decision. However, they did give some good news in that they’ll still perform at promoter Danny Wimmer Presents’ Louder Than Life festival in Louisville, Kentucky, this weekend.
Pantera wrote, “Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will be unable to perform at this year’s edition of Aftershock next month. This event is monumental and it pains us to have to miss it. We will however be back for Aftershock 2024! A sincere...

John Travolta hobnobbed with the guys in Pantera at the metal band’s gig supporting Metallica on Friday (August 25th) at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The movie star was among a bevy of celebs who made their way backstage, including fellow actor Jason Momoa (who also joined the mosh pit) and Mötley Crüe members Tommy Lee and John 5.
Pantera posted a gallery of backstage pics on Instagram (see below), showing Travolta engaged in conversation with singer Philip Anselmo and others. Other pics show the band greeting Momoa and the Mötley Crüe members.
Current Pantera drummer Charlie Benante also posted his own pics in which he’s chatting up Travolta, and hanging out with Momoa and other celebs.
Travolta is no stranger to the hard rock and metal scene, having starred in the film The Fanatic, directed by Fred Durst. In fact, he once impressed Consequence with his knowledge of Limp Bizkit’s music.

Pantera rang in what would have been the late Dimebag Darrell’s 57th birthday during their show on Sunday (August 20th) in Austin, Texas.
It was fitting that the reunited metal legends were performing in Dimebag’s home state of Texas on the late guitarist’s actual birthday. During a break in the concert, Philip Anselmo and company were joined onstage by Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe and Dimebag’s longtime girlfriend Rita Haney for a round of the guitarist’s favorite drink, a “black-tooth grin”: whiskey with a splash of Coca-Cola.
After Blythe rolled out a beverage cart, Haney began passing out the shots — ostensibly some non-alcoholic, for the sober members of the tour party — Anselmo led the crowd in a round of “Happy Birthday.”

Pantera have been inviting special guests to sing their classic song “Walk” with them during their current North American tour, and at this past Thursday’s show they were joined onstage by Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe and late guitarist Dimebag Darrell’s longtime girlfriend Rita Haney.
Video footage from the concert at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, Texas, shows the revamped Pantera lineup first being joined by Blythe, with Haney quickly following. The two share the mic for the song’s iconic chorus, with frontman Philip Anselmo putting his arm around them.
Lamb of God are supporting Pantera on the North American tour, and Blythe is a longtime friend of the band, so it wasn’t a big surprise seeing him onstage.

Los Angeles, Aug 6 (Ians) American heavy metal band Metallica is currently on its ‘M72’ World Tour travelling across North America and Europe. In a recent incident, the band’s venue at Long Beach Arena in California led to them paying over $300,000 for damages caused by fans who damaged thousands of cushions.
Speaking to ‘Need A Friend’ podcast back in August 2, drummer Lars Ulrich spoke of the incident “Why are there over 16,000 seats in there? We’ve paid for about 15,000 of those 16,000 seats over the years because every time we were playing Long Beach Arena, people would just take the cushion, you know, play frisbee with it inside the arena.”
Later talking about the damages on August 5 night, Ulrich said “This was an absolute mind f***. The very next day, the venue staff was like, ‘Okay, Metallica, here’s those $300,000 worth of cushions that you have to pay for. And we...

Metallica kicked off the North American leg of their 2023-2024 “M72 World Tour” on Friday (August 4th) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band was joined on the bill by fellow metal legends Pantera and rising rockers Mammoth Wvh (led by Wolfgang Van Halen).
The tour (get tickets here) features Metallica performing two completely unique sets (no repeat songs) over two nights in each city, with different support acts each evening. They’ll be right back at MetLife on Sunday (August 6th), with Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills opening.
The setup has the bands performing in the round, on a circular stage in the middle of the stadium, with some fans in the “Snakepit” (the center of the circle).
While there was a forecast for thunderstorms on Friday night, that never came to be, making for a comfortable summer evening in New Jersey.

What a night! I just got back from the Pantera and Lamb of God concert at the Freedom Mortage Pavilion in Camden, NJ, and I’m still buzzing from the adrenaline. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot. The crowd was insane, the sound was loud, and the bands were on fire.
Legacy would be a fitting name for this tour, because let no one be mistaken, this is not a Pantera reunion tour by any means, but much more of a statement and tribute to the band’s unrelenting and dynamic legacy. It will never be called a reunion because there is no way that could ever be true, as we are sadly missing two of the band’s founding members, brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul Abbott…and they left some very big shoes to fill.

The revamped Pantera embarked on the band’s first North American headlining tour in 22 years on Friday, July 28th, in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania.
Notably, the encore consisted of the Far Beyond Driven cuts “Slaughtered” and “Revolution Is My Name,” the first time either song had been played live by Pantera since 2001.
The rest of the setlist included many of the Pantera staples and album cuts the group has been playing during its previous one-off festival performances and overseas dates.
“A New Level” from Vulgar Display of Power opened the set, and from there Philip Anselmo and company played classics such as “Mouth for War,” “I’m Broken, “5 Minutes Alone,” and their cover of Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan,” among others. Anselmo and the audience then broke into a chorus of “Happy Birthday” for bassist Rex Brown, who turned 59 the day before.

Pantera’s classic albums will be released on picture-disc vinyl for the first time as part of a 5-lp box set arriving July 21st via Rhino Records.
The collection, dubbed The Complete Studio Albums 1990-2000, includes Cowboys From Hell (1990), Vulgar Display of Power (1992), Far Beyond Driven (1994), The Great Southern Trendkill (1996), and Reinventing the Steel (2000). It’s limited to 3,500 copies sold through Rhino.com, Pantera.com, and indie retailers.
The five albums represent the band’s core discography, following a lesser-known run of four LPs in the ’80s that had more of a glam-metal vibe. The band reinvented itself with Cowboys From Hell, establishing the groove metal sound that made them one of the most revered metal acts in the world.

The revamped lineup of Pantera played the band’s first US show in 22 years on Saturday (May 6th) at the Thunder Beach Motorcycle Rally in Panama City, Florida.
Pantera — featuring classic members Philip Anselmo (vocals) and Rex Brown (bass), alongside Zakk Wylde (guitar) and Charlie Benante (drums) — returned to perform gigs in Latin America this past December, as well as a couple of dates in Japan in March. Last night’s show in Panama City marked the band’s first US concert since a July 25th, 2001, gig in Tacoma, Washington.
In advance of their proper headlining Summer 2023 North America tour with special guests Lamb of God (tickets available here), Pantera are playing a couple of US festival shows this month, including last night’s Thunder Beach Motorcycle Rally and May 20th at Welcome to Rockville in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Metallica will be embarking on their 2023-2024 world tour next month, and one of the bands supporting their North American legs is the recently reunited Pantera. While Pantera’s return has been met with some backlash, Metallica stickman Lars Ulrich thinks they have the right guy behind the drum kit.
Pantera are touring with classic members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown along with guitarist Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante. The latter two are filling in for late brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, respectively. While the band has insisted that the reunion is a celebration of the legacies of Dime and Vinnie, some fans consider calling the band “Pantera” without the two brothers sacrilegious.
Metallica’s “M72 World Tour” hits North America this summer and fall, and again in the summer of 2024. Pantera will be providing support on the first of two shows in each city, with tickets available here.

Members of Type O Negative and Crowbar have formed a new band called Eye Am.
The group consists of Type O Negative’s Kenny Hickey (guitar/vocals) and Johnny Kelly (drums) along with Crowbar’s Kirk Windstein (guitar/vocals) and Todd Strange (bass). They are currently recording their debut single at Gainesville, Florida, studio The Moathouse with Less Than Jake bassist Roger Lima engineering the sessions.
Windstein teased the new project on social media earlier this week, informing fans that he was flying from New Orleans to Florida “to jam and write with 3 talented Guys!!!” Photos of the quartet in the studio then surfaced on Type O Negative’s Facebook.
Meanwhile, Hickey and Kelly have a long history of playing music together even beyond their years in Type O Negative. The two played with each other in thrash metal bands in the late ’80s prior to Type O’s formation,...

Three of Texas metal band Pantera’s forthcoming reunion shows have been cancelled this week, apparently due to controversy surrounding a 2016 incident where frontman Phil Anselmo made a Nazi salute.
The decision by promoters to cancel the shows was reportedly made due to “intensive conversations with artists, our partners [and] festival fans”, Consequencereports. Pantera have been dropped from the lineups of Germany’s Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals, while their scheduled performance at Vienna’s Gasometer venue has also been cancelled.
The Independent has contacted Pantera’s representatives for comment.
While no specific reason was given for the cancellations, Blabbermouthreports that the backlash appears to have stemmed in part from the German Green Party. At a recent city council meeting in Nurnberg, a spokeswoman called out Anselmo’s “repeated” use of Nazi slogans, and said it was irresponsible to book them for Rock am Ring and Rock im Park,...

Pantera staged their first concert in over 21 years as the semi-reunited heavy metal band headlined Friday night at Mexico’s Hell & Heaven Metal Fest.
The gig marked Pantera’s first concert since Aug. 2001: After initially going on hiatus, the metal legends broke up in 2003. A year later, guitarist and founding member “Dimebag Darrell” Abbott was killed onstage by a deranged fan at a Columbus, Ohio concert in Dec. 2004. The name of actor Bill Moseley and the horror genre go hand in hand, as he has starred in a slew of cult classic films such as “Repo! The Genetic Opera”, “House Of 1,000 Corpses”, The Devil’s Rejects” and the most recent “3 From Hell”. Moseley’s first big role in the horror genre came from playing the character of Chop Top in “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2”. Moseley also went on to appear in the HBO series “Carnivale” and is also an accomplished musician performing with the likes of Buckethead and Phil Anselmo to only name a few. We recently had a chance to catch up with Bill Moseley ahead of his upcoming appearance at Twiztid’s Astronomicon which will be taking place in Sterling Heights, Michigan. At Astronomicon Moseley will be offering fans a rare opportunity for a very special photo op of him in the infamous Chop Top make-up.

It probably won’t surprise anyone that Jason Momoa — a.k.a. Khal Drogo, a.k.a. Aquaman — is a devoted metalhead. So when he showed up at The Forum in Los Angeles on Saturday night for Slayer’s farewell concert, he didn’t pass up the chance to sing a Pantera classic with Phil Anselmo.
Anselmo was one of the opening acts for the thrash metal legends, performing alongside his post-Pantera solo band, The Illegals. During the set, Momoa, who was attending the show with his two kids, joined him onstage while he was performing Pantera’s famous ballad “This Love” from their biggest album, “Vulgar Display of Power.”

Heading into their seventh LP, and third for a major label, Pantera were bigger than ever. Their prior album, 1992’s Vulgar Display of Power, had gone gold, and expectations were high for what would come next. Some at their label felt it was the right time for the band to streamline the punishingly heavy sound they’d honed on Vulgar, as Metallica had done on their self-titled 1991 smash.

Pantera drummer and founding member Vinnie Paul died Friday night in Las Vegas. His passing was announced on the Pantera Facebook page, but no cause of death was revealed.
“Vincent Paul Abbott aka Vinnie Paul has passed away,” Pantera wrote on Facebook. “Paul is best known for his work as the drummer in the bands Pantera and Hellyeah. No further details are available at this time. The family requests you please respect their privacy during this time.”
The passing provoked an outcry among fans of the band, whose raw, groove heavy rock has been a mainstay of the hard music scene for more than 30 years.
Texas-born Paul formed Pantera in 1981 with his brother, guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, and bassist Rex Brown. Abbott was shot and killed by a gunman while on stage during a performance with Damageplan on December 8, 2004 in Columbus, Ohio.

Vinnie Paul, drummer for Pantera, Damageplan and Hellyeah, has died at the age of 54, according to his label and a post on Pantera’s Facebook page. No cause of death was disclosed.
Paul, whose real name was Vincent Paul Abbott, was born in Abilene, Texas and co-founded Pantera in 1981 with his brother, “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott. The group spent several years as a pop-leaning metal outfit before joining forces with singer Phil Anselmo and adopting a heavier direction — dubbed “power groove” by the band — late in the decade. The sound caught on, they signed with Atlantic subsidiary Atco and released their “Cowboys From Hell” album in 1990. Their popularity rose through tours with Suicidal Tendencies and later Judas Priest, and they performed in Moscow with Metallica and AC/DC in 1991. Pantera quickly became one of the most vital hard-rock acts of the decade, via the albums “Vulgar Display of Power” (a title adopted...

From The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2’s Chop-Top to Otis from House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects, Bill Moseley is known for playing iconic villains in the horror genre, but his role as an exorcist in The Possession Experiment—coming out on VOD, Digital HD, and DVD—is firmly rooted on the side of good against evil.
In anticipation of The Possession Experiment’s release from Momentum Pictures, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Moseley about finding his "inner Max von Sydow" in the film's opening exorcism scene, and with the holiday season upon us, the talented actor also reflected on playing the killer Ricky in Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out!

When Phil Anselmo claims "Kicks Lovecraftian/Giger Ass!!!" of a film, it's a must-see. Not only did the Pantera/Down frontman fall in love with the film, but on further review, I found that Ethereal Chrysalis opened for Manborg at Toronto After Dark last year, and the film won the Sugar Skull audience award for best short at Morbido, among other awards. [Editor's note: And, in fact, we wrote about it last year.]Ethereal Chrysalis features an astounding amount of special effects that will make you squirm, both practical and visual --- the artists on hand not only include director/writer/actor Syl Disjonk, but the infamous Remy Couture.I can only imagine the horrors that Hp Lovecraft conjured in his mind as he wrote his tales of the indescribable. I'm sure that Disjonk comes...

Supergroup compilations can be hit and miss, and although many metal fans in 2015 like to lambaste anyone who isn’t pushing the envelope as far as possible, that can make it far too easy to forget how enjoyable the most base staples of the genre can truly be.
Blisteringly-fast guitar solos, a solid mix of clean and aggressive vocals, thunderous and intricate drum patterns powering everything – it’s clear when the Metal Allegiance project came together (comprised of everyone from Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe to Dream Theatre’s Mike Portnoy, Pantera’s Phil Anselmo and more), they simply wanted to put out a record that would speak to the times, whilst also emitting a timeless quality itself.

Though it never charted above No. 72, Korn’s self-titled 1994 debut has had unparalleled influence over the last two decades of American heavy music: the rise of nu-metal’s whomping pain-stomp, the road to platinum genre-smashers like Linkin Park and Slipknot, the popularity of the 7-string guitar, the emergence of superstar producer Ross Robinson and his method-acting-style techniques and even the mosh-centric rhythms of stadium dubstep artists like avowed Korn fan Skrillex.

I try to never make an interview article about myself, but I had to mention just how I discovered Heidi Shepherd, Carla Harvey and their kick ass metal band, Butcher Babies.
Last August, I was in the pit at the Mayhem Festival in Saratoga Springs, NY. I was waiting to see Children of Bodom, but there was one other act scheduled before Alexi Laiho and his Finnish brethren took the stage. A group called Butcher Babies. Fronted by two incredibly beautiful and awesomely aggressive ladies, Butcher Babies absolutely slayed the crowd in Saratoga and I knew I had to catch up with this band and interview them as the Dread Central readership would certainly fall in love with them as I did.

I feel like I should immediately start with an apology. You see, despite my best intentions, I just couldn’t follow my own advice; made in the recent Download special of my regular Things You Should Be Listening To feature. However, I did catch a hell of a lot of bands at this year’s, and my first, Download. This means that any of you who missed out can feel like you were there after all, or even more depressed that you didn’t go – it’s entirely up to you.
It also means that anyone can argue that my opinions are wrong, or scream bloody murder that I missed certain bands; in which case do feel free to share – there’s a comments section for a reason, you know? I’m also going to apologise in advance for my writing in this feature. As I write, I haven’t written it yet,...

Fans of European horror movies – especially from the '70s and '80s – are probably on an intimate basis with the Italian rock band Goblin. Their most famous and memorable works include the scores for George Romero's epic Dawn of the Dead and Dario Argento's 1977 classic Suspiria – one of the loudest, weirdest and most terrifying film soundtracks ever created. While Goblin has been active in various incarnations since their foundation in the mid-'70s, and core member Claudio Simonetti has played their music at Us shows with his side project Daemonia, Goblin's original co-founders – Simonetti and Maurizio Guarini – have never performed together in North America. But that's all changing this October, when they bring the full Goblin lineup to perform the entire Suspiria score live at the first Housecore Horror Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The brainchild of metal icon Phil Anselmo (Pantera) and bestselling true-crime author Corey Mitchell...
