Exclusive: NBC is developing Co-Dependents, a multi-camera comedy written and executive produced by Pivoting creator Liz Astrof. The project is executive produced by Dana Honor and comes from Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, where Honor’s Defining Eve Productions is under a deal.
Set in a middle-class town on Long Island, Co-Dependents follows a 30-something brother and sister have gotten older but haven’t really grown up. Childhood rituals and their commitment to each other always take first place over spouses, jobs and kids.
The project is inspired by Astrof’s relationship with her brother, Jeff Astrof.
The two accomplished comedy writers have been supportive of each other. Jeff Astrof left the following comment on a 2017 Deadline story about a Liz Astrof multi-cam comedy landing a put pilot commitment at CBS: “Finally, an Astrof does something of quality! Kill it, Liz!! love, your brother.”

The horror comedy series Shining Vale premiered on Starz back in March of 2022, then the second season reached the airwaves this past October. Unfortunately, there won’t be a season 3, as Variety reports that the show has been cancelled for the most common reason a show gets cancelled: it “did not find a large enough audience to continue.” But Starz is going further than just cancelling this show, as they’re also going to be scrubbing it from their archives. “Not only will the show be cut by the network, the first two seasons will be removed from the Starz streaming service at the end of the year.“
Created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan, the first season of Shining Vale followed a dysfunctional family that moves from the city to a small town into a house in which terrible atrocities have taken place. But no one seems to notice except for Patricia “Pat” Phelps,...

Starz has canceled its horror-comedy Shining Vale after two seasons.
The series, starring Courteney Cox as a woman who begins seeing and communicating with ghosts, finished its second (and now final season) on Dec. 1. In addition to canceling the show, Starz will also remove Shining Vale from its streaming library at the end of the month.
Jeff Astrof, who co-created Shining Vale with Sharon Horgan, shared news of the show’s end on social media Wednesday. “This show gave me unrelenting joy to work on. Not a single bad day. Please watch the Starz (turns out, Limited) series Shining Vale before 12/31,” he wrote.
Shining Vale earned generally positive reviews for its first season, which premiered in March 2022. It earned a renewal in May of that year, with season two premiering in October 2023. It was less successful in drawing viewers; sources say that was ultimately behind the decision to both cancel...

Starz has canceled Shining Vale after two seasons, Deadline has confirmed. Sources close to production revealed that the Courteney Cox- and Greg Kinnear-led series “did not find a large enough audience” to continue.
Both seasons also are set to be removed from the streamer’s library.
Sources said producer Warner. Bros. TV tried to sell the series elsewhere but did not succeed.
Season 1 of the series from creators Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan followed Pat (Cox) and Terry Phelps (Kinnear), a married couple who cash in their life savings and move from a cramped Brooklyn apartment to an old Victorian mansion in Connecticut, as a last-ditch effort to save their marriage after Pat’s torrid affair with the handyman. Their kids Gaynor and Jake are pissed, and as disconnected as teenagers can get. Pat is losing her grip on them, and Terry doesn’t see that Pat might...

After just two seasons, the Courteney Cox-starring horror series “Shining Vale” has been given the axe by Starz, and that’s not even the worst news about the show this afternoon.
Variety reports, “The Season 2 finale of the horror comedy, produced by Warner Bros. TV, aired on December 1. Not only will the show be cut by the network, the first two seasons will be removed from the streaming service at the end of the year.”
“Shining Vale” Season 2 premiered on the Starz streaming service on October 13, 2023, and Variety notes that the show didn’t find enough of an audience to justify a third season.
The bigger issue here, however, is the news that both seasons of “Shining Vale” will be removed from the Starz streaming service. The series has to date not received a single physical media release, so this could be another case of a streaming project being...

The second season of “Shining Vale” will serve as the final season on Starz — though co-creator Jeff Astrof has begun writing a third season and is holding onto hope that the series will find another home.
The Season 2 finale of the horror comedy, produced by Warner Bros. TV, aired on Dec. 1. Not only will the show be cut by the network, the first two seasons will be removed from the streaming service at the end of the year.

Mira Sorvino wasn’t about to start conjuring up any spirits on the set of “Shining Vale.”
When she learned she’d be playing three characters — Rosemary Wellington, Ruth Levin and Nellie Burke — in the second season of the Starz comedy, the actor immediately asked showrunner Jeff Astrof for details so she could start prepping.
“It was very ambitious,” Astroff told Variety on the Los Angeles set of the second season about his big ideas for the new episodes. But he was determined to continue the story, which picks up four months after the events of Season 1, as Pat (Courteney Cox) has been institutionalized and put under shock therapy.
This season pulls inspiration from “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “The Ring” and “Rosemary’s Baby,” among other sources. In fact, Sorvino’s Ruth, who is Pat’s neighbor, is similar to Minnie Castevet, the character played by Ruth Gordon in “Rosemary’s Baby.

Warning: This story contains spoilers from “Shining Vale” Season 2, Episode 1.
Courteney Cox’s Pat Phelps got out of a mental institution during the “Shining Vale” Season 2 premiere, but she’s clearly not out of the woods following her nervous breakdown (or demonic possession?) in Season 1.
The Starz horror comedy — created by Jeff Astrof (“Trial & Error”) and “Bad Sisters” scribe Sharon Horgan — followed up on the shocking events from the Season 1 finale, including Pat succumbing to the influence of demon Rosemary (Mira Sorvino) and axing her husband Terry (Greg Kinnear) in the head. The violence led to her children Gaynor (Gus Birney) and Jake (Dylan Gage) having her committed at the local asylum for a year.
But the premiere kicked off with a disheveled Pat being asked to leave treatment after only four months, once funds from her medical insurance ran out. Though she attempts to stay focused on her sanity,...

The horror comedy series Shining Vale premiered on Starz back in March of 2022 – and last month, Starz confirmed that season 2 of the show will be reaching the airwaves next month. To be specific, it’s set to premiere on Friday, October 13th. With that date right around the corner, a trailer for Shining Vale season 2 has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan, the first season of Shining Vale followed a dysfunctional family that moves from the city to a small town into a house in which terrible atrocities have taken place. After trying to murder her family with an ax in season one, the trailer for Starz’s Shining Vale season two reveals that Pat (Courteney Cox) thinks she might be all better now after going through extensive electroshock therapy. However, the trailer goes on to confirm that Pat’s actually not fine now and believes her psychosis has infected her family.
And speaking of Pat’s family…they don’t seem ready or willing to embrace her return.

Along with that confirmation comes the unveiling of some first look images from the new season, and you can check those out at the bottom of this article.
Created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan, the first season of Shining Vale followed a dysfunctional family that moves from the city to a small town into a house in which terrible atrocities have taken place. But no one seems to notice except for Patricia “Pat” Phelps, who’s convinced she’s either depressed or possessed – turns out, the symptoms are exactly the same. Pat is a...

Rachel McAdams, The Simpsons’ James L. Brooks, Succession duo Alan Ruck and Justine Lupe, Jaleel White, who played Steve Urkel, and spiritual advisor/Presidential candidate Marianne Williamson were some of the broad range of people out on the picket lines across LA.

Mean Girls star Rachel McAdams, who recently starred in Fxx comedy Dave, was walking the picket line outside of Netflix. She told Deadline, “I’m out here to support the unions. I think what they’re asking for is totally within reason.”

Courteney Cox has done a bit of everything: danced in a famous music video with Bruce Springsteen; produced a game show; starred in one of the most famous sitcoms of all time and survived a dozen fights with Ghostface.
So, what inspires an actor with so many successes? Something completely different. While Cox’s own show, Starz’s “Shining Vale,” which she both produces and stars in, is an Emmy contender in the comedy category, she hasn’t been watching shows that are making her laugh. Instead, she’s been watching true crime stories, first with HBO Max’s “The Staircase.”
“Colin Firth has gotten that character down. I’m just thrilled with it. I loved the documentary series, but I can’t believe how he has his own twist on it, but it’s how he’s enveloped that character,” she tells Variety of the show, which tells the real story of Michael Peterson,...

Courteney Cox doesn’t mean any offense to Monica Geller or Gale Weathers or Jules Cobb, but there’s just something about Pat Phelps. “I don’t wanna — obviously, Monica and other characters I’ve played, but this is the one that’s just reinvigorated my passion for acting,” the actress tells Gold Derby of her role on Starz’s “Shining Vale” (watch the exclusive video interview above). “There’s just so many things to play, I’m thrilled. Starz's Courteney Cox-led horror-comedy "Shining Vale" will be back for more shocks and thrills, as it's been officially renewed for a second season according to The Hollywood Reporter. Shining Vale co-creator Jeff Astrof said he was looking to squeeze comedy out of the horror genre when he joined stars Courteney Cox, Greg Kinnear and Mira Sorvino for a panel about the Starz series at Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday at the Paramount Theatre.
“I wanted to do something genre-bending,” Astrof said. “And then Aaron Kaplan said, ‘Sharon Horgan wants to do The Shining, but as a comedy,’ and I was like, ‘That’s incredible.'”
Contenders TV — Deadline’s Complete Coverage
The resulting horror comedy series centers on a dysfunctional family moving to a small town where terrible atrocities have taken place. Pat (Cox) is a writer who gets caught cheating on her husband Terry (Kinnear). In an attempt to save their marriage, they relocate from the big city, but Pat soon begins to suspect there is something very wrong with their new home.

When “Shining Vale” creators Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan first met they knew they had a delicate job on their hands. The series, following a novelist played by Courteney Cox, who is haunted by the ghost of a 1950s housewife (Mira Sorvino), had to strike the right tone between horror and comedy. What they knew they wanted to do was directly reference some of the classic horror and noir movies that inspired them. “The tone was being able to do references and homage without making it a spoof,” Astrof told IndieWire via Zoom.
Initially pitched by Horgan to Astrof as “‘The Shining’ but a comedy,” the creators and crew reveled in inserting references to their favorite horror features. So much so that the series almost requires repeat viewings to find everything. Something as minor as the wallpaper that papers the interior closet where Cox’s Pat Phelps finds a hidden...

Exclusive: TBS has put in development Stubs, a half-hour comedy from writer Lindsay Golder and The Mick creators Dave Chernin and John Chernin.
Written by Golder, in Stubs, a small town’s former golden girl returns home 3/4ths the woman she was, and discovers that it’s much harder for her to run from her problems when she’s only got one leg.
Dave and John Chernin executive produce with 3 Arts’ Oly Obst, Nicolas Frenkel and Katie Newman.
The project reunites Golder with the Chernin brothers, with whom she worked as a staff writer on The Mick. She most recently served as a writer and supervising producer on TBS comedy series Chad, which debuted as the top-rated scripted cable program of 2021. She previously wrote on Starz’s horror-comedy Shining Vale, co-created by Sharon Horgan and Jeff Astrof, and the CW dramedy In the Dark. Golder received an Mfa in Screenwriting...

Courteney Cox knows a thing or two about sitcoms. She shot to fame as Monica Geller on the iconic “Friends” and starred for six seasons on “Cougar Town.”
It’s no surprise she gets pitched a lot of half-hour comedies. However, it’s rare she finds anything that appealing.
“Usually they’re not challenging enough, or I find sitcoms just not that funny anymore,” she tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast.
But then came “Shining Vale.” It’s not exactly a sitcom, but a horror comedy series on Starz. She stars as Pat, a novelist with writers block who relocates with the family from New York City to Connecticut after her husband Terry (Greg Kinnear) learns she’s having an affair. Pat, who is also a recovering alcoholic, believes their new home is haunted because she begins to see ghosts, including one played by Mira Sorvino.

When Patricia and Terry Phelps decide to move their family to a remote town in Connecticut for a new start following her indiscretion with a handyman, things immediately start to get weird in Starz’s “Shining Vale.” The well-reviewed horror dark comedy, which bowed last week with a two-episode premiere and continues Sunday nights on the network, quickly distinguished itself by packing in – rather successfully – storylines with teeth.
The overarching arc follows the couple as they reestablish their family’s lives in a creaky old house that only Pat (Courteney Cox) seems to recognize is haunted (by Mira Sorvino). Here is the synopsis of the show, according to Rotten Tomatoes: “A dysfunctional family moves from the city to a small town after Patricia “Pat” Phelps, a former “wild child” who became famous through writing a raunchy female empowerment novel, is caught cheating on her husband. In an attempt to rebuild their family, they move into a house where terrible

Mira Sorvino has played her fair share of women from the past, most famously portraying Marilyn Monroe in the 1996 TV movie, “Norma Jean and Marilyn.” Her latest series, the Starz horror-comedy “Shining Vale,” sees Sorvino play a muse (of sorts) opposite Courteney Cox portraying a writer looking for her next hit. As a 1950s ghost haunting Cox’s Pat Phelps, Sorvino appreciated Rosemary’s devilish “glee” at getting a second chance to live through Pat and her family.
For the actress, there’s certainly an awareness of how things have progressed for women since Monroe’s day — part of Rosemary’s attraction to Pat is that the latter lives in a more permissive era — and yet so much remains mired in the past. “Being a member of the female gender sets us up for such a different life than, say, if we were a straight cisgender white male from an affluent background,...

We were thrilled that we had the opportunity to chat with Judith Light on Shining Vale's virtual press day.
Somehow, she conveys so many emotions that result from being in and watching Shining Vale. She stars as Joan, the mother of Courteney Cox's character, Pat. She's a million things at once, and Light portrays her perfectly.
The discussion below reveals how she came to be a part of this show and why she thinks it will spark conversation and entertain audiences worldwide.
Hi, Judith. How are you?
I'm good. How are you?
I'm good. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us today. Appreciate it.
Of course. I'm delighted. This is fabulous.
So with so many people out there clamoring to work with you these days, how did you decide on Shining Vale?
I read the script. It's just a character I've never played before.

Mira Sorvino has a way with blondes. She plays them to perfection, and it's as much a choice as it is her talent.
She spoke with TV Fanatic about her role on Shining Vale as either an actual ghostly entity inserting herself into a situation or the id to Courteney Cox's yang, Pat.
She's got a lot of great insight, so please enjoy the interview.
Hi, Mira. So nice to meet you.
Hi, nice to meet you too.
So how did you get involved with Shining Vale?
I think it was sent to my agents, and then Jeff Astrof and I had a conversation about the character, and he sent me the script and sent me some later scenes because, obviously, in the pilot, I don't appear that much.
And I got to see some of her inner workings from later in the proposed season because remember, we were...

As she would tell you, Merrin Dungey has a smaller role on the Starz series Shining Vale, but her role as Kam is pivotal to driving Courteney Cox's character, Pat, in many ways.
With a terrific cast and strong talent behind the camera, Merrin has valuable insight into why Shining Vale speaks so well to women's issues and the importance of women behind the scenes on this and every production.
We hope you enjoy the conversation.
Hi, Merrin. How are you?
I'm great. How are you today?
Good. Thank you. So how did you get involved with Shining Vale?
I was lucky enough to get cast as Kam, and when I saw who was involved? Sharon Horgan, first of all, caught my eye. I'm such a huge fan of hers and Jeff Astrof.
And to play with Courteney Cox, Mira Sorvino, and Greg Kinnear is a dream come true.

The blunt opening title card of “Shining Vale” feels like a test: “Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression,” it reads, seeming to signal the beginning of a clunky show about Women and Depression — at least until the next sentence appears onscreen. “Women are also twice as likely to be possessed by a demon,” it says, a immediate and deliberate wink of self-awareness at an audience that might’ve already tried to write the show off. What’s more, it adds: “the symptoms are the same.”
Throughout the first seven episodes made available for critics (the season will have eight in total), “Shining Vale” follows a Brooklyn family coming to grips with the inherent strangeness of their new Connecticut home to increasingly catastrophic ends. It also ends up juggling so many tricky narrative plates — depression, generational trauma, the slow and steady awakening of a haunted house...

‘Shining Vale’ Review: Courteney Cox and Greg Kinnear Get Trapped in a Middling Horror Comedy Rehash
“Shining Vale” is less a horror comedy than a show with the illusion of both horror and comedy. Rather than weave together its swirling ideas about family and regret and the fact that teen boys often smell bad, “Shining Vale” exists as a series of bits and nods to other stories that better pull off that combination of jokes and jumps.
In isolation, there are stretches where stars Courteney Cox and Greg Kinnear arrive in the general vicinity of the better version of the show they’re locked in to. As couple Pat and Terry Phelps, deep in the midst of a transitional phase of their marriage, Cox and Kinnear are asked to play these people as fundamentally fractured. Pat is still reeling from a momentary affair that threatened to implode her already tenuous family connection. Their daughter Gaynor (Gus Birney) acts out in every way she can and their...

Starz's "Shining Vale" opens with an ominous statistic typed on screen: "Women are roughly twice as likely than men to suffer from depression." The serif, vaguely gothic font then types out a quick list of depression symptoms, before ending with a second, much less verifiable statistic: "Women are also roughly twice as likely to be possessed by a demon."
