Actress Shabana Azmi feels if we want to establish gender equality, then along with empowering women, men need to change the definition of masculinity.
Shabana recently presented the film "Mee Raqsam", directed by her brother Baba Azmi. The film is about a Muslim father who goes out of his way to help his young daughter achieve her dream of becoming a bharatnatyam dancer.
"A very special element of the father Salim's character in the film was that he was both a father and a mother to the 15-year-old girl, ever since his wife died. It is certainly not easy for a father to nurture a teenage girl like a mother. I think women are better equipped to be both father and mother to their children. When it comes to men, perhaps they are not. That is why the character of Salim was so special, it was like redefining masculinity," Shabana Azmi told Ians.

Mee Raqsam
Starring Naseeruddin Shah, Danish Hussain, Aditi Subedi
Written and Directed by Baba Azmi
In the idyllic village of Mijwan there lives a Muslim girl whose heart beats for the Bharat Natyam dance form. Bharat Natyam??!!! Her family and the village community are aghast. Yeh to kafiron ka kaam hai. How can a decent 15-year old do….this!! Shame!!!
I loved the twinkle-eyed irreverence embedded in debutant director Baba Azmi heartwarming nugget. Brimming over with affection warmth and humour Mee Raqsam takes a tender and evocative look at the risky task of cultural crossovers in India , without any political agenda.
When the films’s bright intelligent protagonist Mariam takes to Bharat Natyam her favoured mood is neither green nor saffron. Writer-director Baba Azmi portrays Mariam’s relationship with her father (Danish Hussain) with the same indelible affection that one saw between Ashok Kumar and his screen-daughter Sarika in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Aashirwaad.

"Baba went into an almost Zen-like state, kept his calm, and said all will be well. Naseer kept his word to Baba made the long journey to Mijwan and gave an outstanding performance in the film. I will always be grateful to Naseer for this. What was wonderful is that his wife...

Over three decades after he produced Mr. India, Boney Kapoor has set his focus on rebooting it as a contemporary franchise. He says remaking an old film is one thing, but rebooting an iconic film like Mr. India is a huge responsibility, and so he wants to take his time to ensure he does not fall flat on his face.
"The Mr. India reboot would be coming. There is no timeline as such, but in my lifetime I will make sure the reboot is done and the franchise remains alive for generations to come," Boney told Ians over phone.
The reboot would be given a contemporary touch.
"There are a couple of ideas that are there in our minds. It's in the development stage as of now," Boney said, adding that he has not yet set a timeline for the project.
"Once let the script be in place, otherwise what...

Shabana Azmi's very quietly accomplished cinematographer-brother Baba Azmi has directed a short film entitled Conesty. Conesty is a dialogue between a kidnapper played by a theatre actor Shakir Khan and his victim played by an Nsd actor Omi. The film is about the art of conning honestly (hence the coinage 'conesty') would now be released online since there are no proper theatrical outlets for short films. Says Baba, "There's no word like "Conesty". But I thought it described the whole cult of conning quite comprehensively. It's a story of trust and betrayal. When Vishal Vijay Kumar came to me with the script I was quite taken up and decided to shoot it. Believe me making a short film was quite a learning experience." Significantly, like most cinematographers turned directors Baba chose not to do the cinematography of Conesty. "To handle both direction and cinematography would have been a bit too much.

Be it Ekta-Tusshar Kapoor or Zoya-Farhan Akhtar, the brother-sister duos of tinsel town have proved their mettle individually in showbiz time and again and with recent projects like .Shor In The City. and .Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara., they have worked wonders as a team as well. While Ekta produced the critically acclaimed dark comedy .Shor In The City., which narrates three interconnected stories amid the noise and grime of Mumbai, Tusshar.s work in the movie was appreciated too. The young actor, who stuck mostly to comedy films initially, got a chance to put his versatility on display thanks to his sister, who is known to have given a platform to talents like Rajeev Khandelwal and Prachi Desai in the television and Hindi film industry. Zoya and Farhan, children of veteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar, have emerged to be two writer-filmmakers in sync with youth.s choice. But Zoya...
