Mike Birbiglia stars in “The Old Man and The Pool”, a stand-up show directed by Seth Barrish.
Someone once said that making people laugh was the hardest thing in the world, and they were not wrong. Becoming a comedian requires not only natural talent but also the development of a distinctive style, a unique way of making humor.
Mike Birbiglia has certainly achieved this, and he has done so with a sense of humor and a style that is even more challenging. Mike doesn’t rely on excessive gestures or raised voices, nor does he seek extravagant humor or easy laughter. Instead, his discourse unfolds with a coherent and seemingly simple structure, accompanied by an interpretation devoid of theatrics.
“Mike Birbiglia: The Old Man and The Pool” is a stand-up performance to be enjoyed calmly, relishing in his anecdotes and his unique humor as a middle-aged man who aims to...

“The best way to deal with the trauma we all experienced in 2020 is to forget about it and never discuss it again and that is what this show endeavors to do,” said Bloom in a statement.

With his latest solo show The Old Man & the Pool, Mike Birbiglia cements his reigning position as Broadway’s greatest comic storyteller – stand-up comic just doesn’t quite fit him – and, yes, the competition for the title isn’t example plentiful, but if it was, Birbiglia could hold his own. He’s that good, and so is his latest accomplishment.
Directed by his frequent collaborator Seth Barrish, and performed on an attractive, deceptively simple set designed by Beowulf Boritt – a curved, wave-like backdrop displays swimming pool tiles, medical graph charts and more with Hana S. Marvel is producing another fictional podcast in a partnership with Stitcher called Marvels. Marvel and Stitcher have already produced two podcasts called Wolverine: The Long Night and Wolverine: The Lost Trail. Both of those tell great stories and I’m looking forward to seeing how this new one turns out. It sounds like it’ll make for a great podcast series!
The series is part of the “celebration marking the 25th anniversary of Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross’ award-winning four-part comic book ‘Marvels,’ which was released to critical acclaim in 1994. Based on ‘Marvels,’ this podcast revisits the story of photojournalist, Phil Sheldon, as he navigates through the chaos caused by the Galactus invasion of New York City and explores what it means to be human in a universe inhabited by Super Heroes.”

Maybe you could quibble with the title of Mike Birbiglia’s latest one-man show. The New One, opening tonight on Broadway at the Cort Theatre, is the same one he debuted last summer Off Broadway (now that would be a silly quibble), and all the bassinets in the world couldn’t contain the TV and movie scripts that got to the subject of panicked, bumbling fatherhood long before Birbiglia.
But it would take someone as dim as one of those sleep-enhancing nursery room lights not to figure out soon enough that The New One, really, is the baby, stupid, not the play. And besides, Birbiglia could name his daughter Little Ricky and still seem fresh. He’s that good.

Mike Birbiglia: The New One begins a limited engagement July 26 at the Cherry Lane Theater in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. Originally set to close August 2, the show will now close August 25. No further extensions are possible due to another booking at the theater.
Tickets for the original run sold out within hours of going on sale Wednesday, according to Mike Lavoie, who produces along with Birbiglia. Lavoie also speculated that “Broadway may be in the future” for The New One.
Birbiglia’s previous one-man shows include My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend and Thank God for Jokes, both filmed for Netflix, and Sleepwalk with Me, which he developed into a feature film. As an actor, he’s appeared on Billions and Orange is the New Black, among other series.

The Sundance London Film and Music Festival returns to the capital this weekend and the lineup of film and music events looks to build on the solid foundation established last year.
It’s an exciting time for Independent film with the trailblazing success of the Sundance festival in Utah sparking off dozens of initiatives, the Raindance festival is a notable and vibrant example, and Sundance London is looking to do more than replicating the success of its American cousin.
When we reported on the lineup we singled out Michael Winterbottom’s The Look of Love, a biopic of self-styled King of Soho Paul Raymond, and Shane Carruth’s Upstream Color, his highly anticipated follow-up film to 2004′s Primer. However there are many more excellent films playing across the various strands and we wanted to shine our spotlight on some of the films to look forward to.

The festival runs from the 25th to the 28th of April at London’s O2. We’ll be taking a more in depth look at the lineup up later in the week and this afternoon we have an exclusive interview with the festival directors.
Here’s the full line up of films, all the rest of the festival’s content (shorts, music and special events) can be found here at http://www.sundance-london.com which is also where you can buy tickets.

One-person plays are risky ventures. Sure, the actor -- who's usually also the playwright -- is putting himself out there, but the audience takes a risk as well.
If you don't like this person, you have committed to an evening with him or her. And an evening of listening to someone you don't like is one very long evening. Just think about an endless Thanksgiving dinner next to your brother's braying new girlfriend.
Luckily "All The Rage," opening Wednesday, Jan. 30, at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater, features the most charming Martin Moran. The play, cleverly directed by Seth Barrish, is a limited engagement until Feb. 25 at the upstairs black box space.
Moran wrote and stars in this work of nonfiction, which the program explains "is also the work of dreams and memory." He's a seasoned actor (Broadway's "Spamalot" and "Cabaret"; TV's "The Newsroom" and "The Big C") who gives the audience a nakedly honest 90 minutes.

Chicago – Sometimes the best way for comics to find an ideal vehicle for their abilities is to direct it themselves. 2012 offered ample proof of that, with Louis C.K. and Lena Dunham setting a stupendously high bar for TV comedy with their respective self-made programs. Of course, “Louis” and “Girls” benefit greatly from the contributions of their first-rate ensembles, yet both are also driven by a singular vision.
I can’t imagine a better person to direct the adaptation of Mike Birbiglia’s 2008 one-man stage show than Birbiglia himself. He’s already proven in a series of bit roles (most notably in Lynn Shelton’s “Your Sister’s Sister” and on Dunham’s “Girls”) that he’s a master of awkward humor as excruciatingly funny as it is painfully authentic. His nonchalant mannerisms and seemingly offhanded line delivery are so believable that it frankly hurts to watch his alter ego bomb onstage,...

Marking a potentially monumental pivot point in his already eclectic career, stand-up comedian turned actor/director/producer/screenwriter Mike Birbiglia has taken his personal tale of failed relationships, comedic development, and serious sleep disorders from the stage to the page and finally to the big screen. The conversion between mediums is flawless, gaining a variety of story expanding tricks this time around that can only come with the visual format. Sleepwalk With Me, winner of the Audience Award at Sundance last year, aches with the anxieties of long term relationship commitment and the struggles of a fledgling comedian while Birbiglia wittily breaks character to orate his tale directly to the audience a la Woody Allen in Annie Hall.
In order to avoid misrepresentation of the people in his life, Birbiglia’s story has been marginally fictionalized. Mike is now Matt , but they are one and the same. To everyone but him,...

Sleepwalk with Me
Written by Mike Birbiglia, Joe Birbiglia
Directed by Mike Birbiglia, Seth Barrish
USA, 2012
Fans of Mike Birbiglia’s stand up and of his appearances on This American Life will already be familiar with some of Sleepwalk with Me’s material. The film follows aspiring stand up comedian Matt Pandamiglio (a thinly disguised version of himself) as he struggles with a dead end job, difficulties with his comedy and a relationship that has reached a plateau. If that wasn’t enough, he suddenly, for the first time in his life, begins to sleepwalk. He soon discovers that he may be suffering from Rapid Eye Movement Behaviour Disorder. This extremely rare condition causes him to act out whatever he is dreaming about with dire consequences to himself and others. At one point, the condition leads him to jump out of a hotel window.

Here’s a phrase we don’t get to hear much these days : this film is based on a radio program. Back in Hollywood’s Golden Age, radio was as much a source for feature films as television, novels, comic books, and video games are today. True, last year’s The Green Hornet and next year’s The Lone Ranger started as 1930′s radio shows, but most folks are familiar with their TV incarnations. And you could say that the autobiographical Private Parts had its basis in radio as does the Howard Stern best seller. Well, Sleepwalk With Me began as a popular true story told by stand-up comic Mike Birbiglia on NPR’s ” This American Life” hosted by Ira Glass ( who co-wrote the screenplay ). So we could say that it’s a movie about stand-up following films ( in comic jargon they’d be the warm-ups ) going back to Lenny,...

Winner of a 2012 Audience Award at Sundance, comedian Mike Birbiglia wrote, directed and stars in this sincere and hilarious film, based on his off-Broadway show and bestselling book. It’s also the first movie co-written by Ira Glass and co-produced by “This American Life.” The story: when an aspiring stand-up fails to express his true feelings about his girlfriend and his stalled career, his anxiety comes out in increasingly funny and dangerous sleepwalking incidents.
Sleepwalk With Me features Lauren Ambrose (“Six Feet Under”), Carol Kane (“Taxi”), James Rebhorn (“Meet the Parents”), Cristin Milioti (star of Broadway’s “Once”), plus comedians Marc Maron, Kristen Schaal, Wyatt Cenac, Jesse Klein, Henry Phillips and David Wain.
“A funny and insightful movie. I could have watched it for ten hours.”

Chicago – The comedian with the tough-to-pronounce name, Mike Birbiglia, hits the next stage with a new film based on his one man show, “Sleepwalk with Me.” Produced and co-written by Ira Glass of “This American Life,” the story of the serious subject of a sleepwalking disorder creates both mordant laughs and poignant moments.
Birbiglia is essentially channeling his life through the comic filter, and while the film is fictional it contains elements of his own truth. He did struggle through a sleepwalking disorder in real life, and all the horrible – and fascinatingly funny – stages of it are showcased in the film. Birbiglia was born in Massachusetts, and during college joined an improvisation troupe at Georgetown University. His stand-up is hugely popular, with the comedy album release of “Sleepwalk with Me” debuting at number one on the Billboard Comedy Charts in 2011. The Onion Av Club declared his previous comedy album, “My...

Chicago – It’s exciting to witness a breakthrough with a new film artist. The comedian Mike Birbiglia has adapted his one-man show, “Sleepwalk with Me,” into a movie, and the result is a naturalistic performance piece that plays both like a documentary and Woody Allen’s during the “Annie Hall” period. Birbiglia gets a little help from some friends like Lauren Ambrose, Kirsten Schaal, Wyatt Cenac and Amy Schumer.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
This is a based-on-real-events story of Birbiglia’s actual bout with a dangerous sleepwalking condition, one that had him falling off furniture and doing potential damage to all of his relationships. He parallels this struggle with his quest to mate, relating to his girlfriend while trying to develop a stand up career. The film is gutsy, poignant, very funny and has a style that plays like Cinéma Vérité, the fancy film school term that means “truth.” Plus it has the...

Sleepwalk With Me is a remarkably assured directorial debut for comedian and storyteller Mike Birbiglia, based on a stage monologue about his journey of self-discovery as a performer and the challenge of dealing with a rare sleep disorder. Birbiglia performed this piece to great acclaim off-Broadway, and while he’s done a good job of translating his material into a new medium—with the help of his brother Joe, Seth Barrish, and This American Life’s Ira Glass—I still wish I’d seen the show. There is something special about having a good storyteller paint word pictures that a literal dramatization can’t match. As if to acknowledge that fact, the...

If some films are smart, Sleepwalk with Me is NPR smart.
I call comedian Mike Birbiglia's terrific new comedy "NPR smart" for two reasons. First, the film is awash in the sort of sophisticated wit, wry observations and cultural relevance that make National Public Radio a welcome refuge for discerning radio listeners. Sleepwalk with Me has a very NPR-ish sensibility, playing like a mashup of the funniest lines from shows like Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! and Car Talk (albeit without all the cackling).
The second reason why Sleepwalk with Me is NPR smart is that Birbiglia had the astonishingly good sense to enlist public radio god Ira Glass as a co-writer. (Glass hosts NPR staple This American Life, which co-produced the movie.) Birbiglia, Glass and co-writers Joe Birbiglia and Seth Barrish have delivered one of the funniest and brainiest films of the year.

When does sleepwalking make you tragically funny (mostly)? Well, when you're in director and star Mike Birbiglia's new film Sleepwalk With Me, the lines between having a sleep disorder and life changing insight are blurry.
In this IFC low key comedy, elements of Birbiglia's real-life sleep disorder are mined to create a funny and at times, thought-provoking story about a man who has to break the mundane mold of his life and find his passion. Co-written by Bribiglia and his brother, Joe and co-directed by Seth Barrish, Sleepwalk with Me could almost be the touchstone movie for Generation Xer's who are now facing the mid-life blues.

Ira Glass, the host and creator of This American Life and one of the most revered journalists in the country, and Mike Birbiglia, the popular comedian, writer, and actor, who makes regular appearances on This American Life, are two beloved figures who are embarking on their first film: the charming and off-the-cuff Sleepwalk with Me, which Birbiglia directed and co-wrote with Glass, Seth Barrish, and Joe Birbiglia (his brother). It’s based on the comedian’s autobiographical one-man show about his bouts with sleepwalking, a stalled relationship, and a going-nowhere-fast career. The film premiered at Sundance to rave reviews and even won an Audience Award. Will that translate to actual audiences showing up to actually see the movie? They’re about to find out. The two men sat down recently with Vulture to talk about selling popcorn, the advice they got from Matthew Broderick, and feeling like little fish in a big sea.

Slackerwood is giving you the chance to see Sleepwalk with Me next week, before it opens in Austin theaters ... and at no cost. The debut directorial effort from comedian Mike Birbiglia (co-directed with Seth Barrish) will have a preview screening on Monday, August 27, at 7:00 pm at Violet Crown Cinema. We have a limited number of admit-two "e-tickets" to give away -- details on how to get one are after the jump.
An important note about the e-tickets: This is a first-come, first-served pass and seating is not guaranteed. Remember, this is Violet Crown and the theaters are not exactly huge. If you've been to preview screenings, you know that more tickets are given out than there are seats, so arrive early to stake out a good spot in line. Fortunately Violet Crown has drinks and snacks, so hopefully the wait won't be too uncomfortable. They will also validate your...

Why He's On Our Radar: Mike Birbiglia came to Park City this year as a popular comic and emerged as an acclaimed filmmaker, writer and actor following the great reception his film debut, "Sleepwalk With Me," received at Sundance. The film won the Best of Next Audience Award (beating out Craig Zobel's button-pushing "Compliance") and found a home at IFC Films. The comedy -- co-written by Joe Birbiglia, Seth Barrish and "This American Life" host Ira Glass -- is a semi-autobiographical tale based closely on Birbiglia's popular off-Broadway show of the same name. It centers on a struggling comedian (Birbiglia), whose growing anxieties about settling down with his girlfriend (Lauren Ambrose) take the form of vivid dreams that cause him to sleepwalk. The film opens at New York's IFC Center Friday, August 24, and expands throughout the country the following week. What's Next: Birbiglia isn't messing around with the formula.

Many already know Mike Birbiglia from his stand-up specials and comedy tours, but his first feature, Sleepwalk With Me, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Stepping into the acting spotlight, while also writing and directing the film, Birbiglia makes first-time filmmaking look seamless and easy. Sleepwalk With Me also debuted at South By Southwest where Birbiglia and the producer of the film, Brian Bedol, were kind enough to sit down with me to discuss this very endearing and funny film. Check out our conversation below.

Whether it’s been as a comedian, writer, storyteller, or frequent contributor to This American Life, Mike Birbiglia has made a living just talking about his experiences and getting audiences to relate to his day to day struggles. The latest development in his career progression is this new film, Sleepwalk With Me, a tale of struggling in a new career, dealing with societal pressure to start a family, and living through an insane medical condition that makes you do crazy shit while you’re asleep; all material ripped straight out of Birbiglia’s real life experiences. Sleepwalk With Me started as a stage show called “Sleepwalk With Me Live,” which later got recorded and became a best-selling comedy album of the same name. The next step was to turn the stories into written memoirs, so “Sleepwalk With Me & Other Painfully True Stories” was born, and went on to become a New York Times Bestseller. This...

After winning the Best Of Next audience award at the Sundance Film Festival in January, comedian Mike Birbiglia's "Sleepwalk With Me" was so popular at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, that organizers had to turn fans away at each of its screenings last week. Too bad for them: "Sleepwalk With Me," Birbiglia's directorial debut, is a charming bit of indie dramedy that manages to combine elements of "Annie Hall," "Funny People," and even "Goodfellas" into one heartfelt story about relationships and nocturnal activity.
Based on Birbiglia's one-man, off-Broadway show -- which also spawned a book, comedy album and segment on "This American Life" -- "Sleepwalk With Me" follows Matt (Birbiglia), a struggling comic at a crossroads in life: his eight-year relationship with Abbie (Lauren Ambrose) is drifting into dead-shark territory, and his Rem behavior disorder is getting more and more out of hand. Funny and filled with great character beats,...

Remember the movie you thought Judd Apatow wanted to make when he directed "Funny People"? Picture if he had gotten the tone right, swapped out Seth Rogen's whining with some Woody Allen-style meditations on modern romance, and used Mates of State as a key music cue instead of Ringo Starr. The result might look something like "Sleepwalk With Me," comedian Mike Birbiglia's very funny -- and very honest -- new film, which screened to a packed house at the South By Southwest Film Festival on Tuesday night. That stuff you read after "Sleepwalk With Me" debuted at Sundance about how it's one of those festival favorites not to be missed? It's all true.
(Thankfully, IFC picked up "Sleepwalk With Me" for theatrical distribution, so you'll actually have a chance to see it sometime soon.)

Two acquisition deals for Sundance titles made this something of a banner day in the independent film world. Variety earlier reported on filmmaker Todd Louiso’s comic drama Hello I Must Be Going, starring Melanie Lynskey as a thirty-something woman who moves back with her parents, landing with Oscilloscope. Variety also broke the news today of comic Mike Birbiglia’s adaptation of his one-man show Sleepwalk With Me being picked up by IFC Films.
