Jane Birkin graced the front pages of most French newspapers on Monday as France mourned the death of the late British actress and singer who enjoyed icon status in the country that she had called home since the late 1960s.
“Our tears can’t change anything,” proclaimed Le Parisien newspaper, which first broke the news of Birkin’s death at the age of 76 on Sunday.
Libération ran with the simple headline “Without Jane”, while regional newspaper Le Maine Libre referred to the late actress as “The Eternal English Bride of France”.
International obituaries have highlighted Birkin’s notorious performance with partner and late bad boy of French pop music Serge Gainsbourg on the 1968 pop song, ‘Je t’aime… moi non plus’, or the fact she inspired the Hermès Birkin bag.
For the French, she was much more.
In a six-page tribute, Libération mused over the reasons for Birkin’s never-ending...

Story Syndicate has begun production on a feature-length documentary on the life and work of Haylna Hutchins. The film will detail both her work as a cinematographer and her death on the set of the low-budget western “Rust.” Emmy nominee Rachel Mason (“Circus of Books”) will direct the film, which has the approval and backing of Hutchins’ widower Matt Hutchins. Julee Metz is producing.
The current untitled documentary will have exclusive access to Hutchins’ personal and professional archives. It will detail her early life living on a Soviet naval base and then in Kyiv, Ukraine and eventually chronicle her rise to professional prominence as one of the indie film scenes’ most sought-after cinematographers. It will, of course, deal with the on-set calamity which saw Hutchins being fatally injured while shooting “Rust,” a Alec Baldwin-led indie, as well as the fallout from that tragedy and attempts to complete the film.

Actress Charlotte Gainsbourg’s directing debut is an intimate pas de deux between a daughter and her mother, Jane Birkin. But the movie does not take audiences back through a famous family’s history, as documentarian Rory Kennedy did with her mother “Ethel,” the widow of Bobby Kennedy. No, “Jane by Charlotte,” which debuted at Cannes 2021, is more home-movie tribute than a full-blown portrait of the British-French actress-chanteuse.
In her day, Birkin was a gorgeous British gamine who married composer John Barry, an unhappy liaison that produced Charlotte’s older half-sister Kate Barry, followed by a liaison with the love of Birkin’s life, French actor-singer-composer Serge Gainsbourg, who couldn’t have been more famous during the happy decade they spent together before they split in 1980.
They met in 1969 during filming of “Slogan,” in which they had a fictional affair. Per usual, Gainsbourg supplied the soundtrack and dueted with Birkin...

Despite forging her own way as a successful actor and singer, acclaimed for her collaborations with Lars von Trier, Charlotte Gainsbourg has been compared to her father Serge and mom Jane Birkin all her life, she says. In directorial debut “Jane by Charlotte,” she comes back to the subject on her own terms. Shown at the Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival this week following its Cannes premiere, the film is sold internationally by The Party Film Sales.
“I lived in New York for a bit and it was a real breather, to be in a place where I didn’t have to talk about them. Then I started this documentary and realized I wanted to be close to my mother,” she says.

It’s been just over two years since documentary power couple — director Liz Garbus and producer/financier Dan Cogan — launched Story Syndicate, and already the production company has four films contending for Academy Award consideration this awards season.
In addition to producing Garbus’ National Geographic doc “Becoming Cousteau,” opening in theaters today, Story Syndicate is also behind three additional Oscar qualified documentaries: John Hoffman and Janet Tobias’ “Fauci” (National Geographic), Orlando von Einsiedel’s “Convergence: Courage in a Crisis” (Netflix) and Jesse Moss’ “Mayor Pete” (Amazon). The company also produced Ry Russo-Young’s “Nuclear Family,” an HBO three-part series about lesbian moms facing a paternity lawsuit, and Erin Lee Carr’s “Britney vs Spears,” a Netflix title investigating Britney Spears’ conservatorship.
Garbus and Cogan launched the Brooklyn-based production company in June 2019 with just three projects in the works – HBO’s “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark,” Amazon’s “All In:...

I don’t know about you, but expectations have a way of interfering with my enjoyment of a film, so I try my best to set them aside and approach each new movie with an open mind. Still, I must confess that as soon as the 2021 Cannes Film Festival lineup was announced, one selection set my imagination racing: the directorial debut of daring actor Charlotte Gainsbourg, “Jane by Charlotte,” where the Jane in question was her mother, Jane Birkin.
The film’s title was an enticement — a clear homage to “Jane B. by Agnès V.,” a playful postmodern essay-film by the late, great Agnès Varda, in which the two women conspire to deconstruct Birkin’s star status, somehow augmenting her mystery in the process. Would “Jane by Charlotte” succeed in accomplishing something similar, unlocking new dimensions of the French pop icon, with her tomboy style and cultivated accent?

HBO’s forthcoming “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” follow-up episode will dive into the case the late crime writer Michelle McNamara had been investigating since she was 14.
The standalone episode, which will serve as a follow-up to the 2020 docuseries exploring McNamara’s investigation into the Golden State Killer case, will cover both Joseph James DeAngelo’s recent conviction and the hometown murder that McNamara had been following since 1984. It is set to premiere on June 21.
Per HBO, “This powerful special closes one chapter in McNamara’s investigative work on cold cases, and brings to light another, highlighting the start of McNamara’s life-long fascination with unsolved murders.”
Using McNamara’s archival research, voice recordings and interviews with people connected to the case, the new episode will investigate the unsolved rape and murder of Kathy Lombardo in 1984 in McNamara’s hometown of Oak Park, Illinois. According to HBO, McNamara returned...

A special standalone episode of HBO’s “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark,” a 2020 docuseries exploring late writer Michelle McNamara’s investigation into the dark world of the violent predator she dubbed “The Golden State Killer,” will debut Monday, June 21 at 10/9c on HBO.
Here’s the installment’s lengthy description, courtesy of HBO:
“In the summer of 2020, former police officer Joseph James DeAngelo, also known as the Golden State Killer, was sentenced to life in prison for the 50 home-invasion rapes and 13 murders he committed during his reign of terror in the 1970s and ‘80s in California. Many of the survivors and victim’s family members featured in the series reconvened for an emotional public sentencing hearing in August 2020, where they were given the opportunity to speak about their long-held pain and anger through victim impact statements, facing their attacker directly for the first time and bringing a sense of...

HBO announced that a special episode of “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” will premiere on June 21 at 10 p.m. and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
Based on the book of the same name that published in 2018, “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” first launched as a docuseries in 2020 and explored writer Michelle McNamara’s investigation into the dark world of the violent predator she dubbed “The Golden State Killer.” Directed by Elizabeth Wolff, the new episode brings shocking new revelations about the 1984 assault and murder of Kathleen Lombardo, which took place in McNamara’s hometown of Oak Park, Ill. and sparked the author’s interest in true crime. It will feature McNamara’s own research into the cold case, which led to her return to the town in 2013 to investigate it on the ground, thereby highlighting the inconsistencies she found in the police’s work...

Michelle McNamara’s definitive book about the Golden State Killer case, “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark,” is getting the docuseries treatment on HBO later this month, giving the late author and crime reporter the chance to explain her obsession with the case in her own words.
McNamara spent 10 years following the case — which included 50 home-invasion rapes and 12 murders throughout California — before she died in 2016, two years before a suspect was identified and arrested based on DNA evidence. She is credited with bringing the case to wider attention with her blog, True Crime Diary, and a lengthy article in Los Angeles Magazine which served as the basis for “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark.”
HBO’s adaptation is described as “a detective story told in McNamara’s own words, through exclusive original recordings and excerpts from her book read by actor Amy Ryan.” The series draws from extensive archival footage...

Michelle McNamara’s years-long hunt for the Golden State killer is almost ready for the small screen: HBO has dropped the trailer to “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark,” a true-crime documentary series which will premiere June 28.
The upcoming six-part docuseries is based on the late author’s book, titled “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer.” The docuseries will explore the serial rapist and killer’s — a suspect, Joseph James DeAngelo, was arrested in 2018 — crimes.
Per HBO, the series will also give a voice “to the survivors and their families, documenting an era when sex crimes were often dismissed or hidden in shame. A timely inquiry into our macabre preoccupation with true crime and a cautionary tale of the dangerous lure of addiction, the series is a riveting meditation on obsession and loss, chronicling the unrelenting path of a...
