She and her company were nominated for the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award
in 2000 (1999 season) for the conception of Viktor at the Sadler's
Wells Theatre.
Had a son, Salomon Bausch, with her companion since 1981, Ronald Kay.
She was influenced by Kurt Jooss, an icon of German expressionist dance with whom she studied. She was also influenced by the ballets of Antony Tudor whom she met at Juilliard.
Early in her career, she became known for having her company dance on dirt, leaves, or in ankle-deep water.
She was awarded the prestigious Kyoto Prize in 2007, for her work in breaking down the boundaries between dance and theater.
