John Woo is one of the best to ever do it. And by "it" I mean "make some of the greatest action movies you'll ever see." Woo pioneered the gun-fu subgenre of Hong Kong films and his work became internationally recognized in the process. It was only a matter of time before America, and Hollywood came calling. Sure enough, Woo finally made his way to Hollywood in the 1990s. Now, after some time away, he's back in the Hollywood groove with "Silent Night," a dialogue-free action pic about a silent man seeking bloody revenge. With the release of "Silent Night" now here, you may be wondering: how do Woo's Hollywood films stack up? Which is the best? Which is the worst? Well, you've come to the right place. So grab two guns, unleash the doves, and get ready to read our official ranking of John Woo's Hollywood films, including "Silent Night.

John Woo is talking up the legacy of his 2002 WWII drama “Windtalkers.”
The acclaimed action director revisited the film in a wide-ranging New Yorker interview marking his first U.S. film in 20 years, “Silent Night.” Woo addressed how studio MGM let him reign free on “Windtalkers,” which reunited him with “Face/Off” actor Nicolas Cage. The film follows a Marine (Cage) who is assigned to protect a Navajo code talker (Adam Beach) during the Battle of Saipan.
“The studio, MGM, let me do what I wanted to, especially if I wanted to make changes,” Woo said. “At the beginning, I argued quite a lot with the writers. They didn’t want to change their original idea, which was to follow one character’s painful inner struggle.”
He continued, “Cage was pretty much like a John Wayne type, but I wanted to change the movie to be more about friendship. I wanted...

John Woo is perhaps the greatest action director of all time. No one can shoot action as kinetically as him, and his style paved the way for everyone from Sam Raimi to The Wachowskis to Chad Stahelski, whose John Wick movies are a love letter to the movies Woo made with Chow Yun-Fat. With his comeback movie Silent Night getting good buzz and hitting theatres on December 1st, John Woo recently sat down with The New Yorker for an extensive, wide-ranging interview about his life and career.
Of course, the magazine couldn’t help but ask Woo for his thoughts on superhero movies, with the legendary director coming down firmly on team Scorsese, who’s been outspoken about his dislike of the genre. “I’ve never liked watching movies with big special effects or anything based on comic books. Adam Beach must leave his family in a desperate attempt to protect them in an exclusive first look at “Exile,” which you can watch above.
The trailer lays out the high concept. Ted Evans is being menaced by a man connected to a prior sin. He previously was in a fatal auto accident while driving under the influence. The man whose family he killed is about to be released from prison. The deal: “You leave your family, or I kill your family.” However, his wife isn’t so willing to give up on him. Of course, that’s because she thinks that the threat is not tangible but rather a manifestation of his guilt.
Written by Michael Beaton and directed by Jason James, “Exile” will be distributed by Electric Entertainment and released Oct. 10 on VOD. Amber Ripley and Sammie Astaneh are producers. Ellie Fox, Mark Williams, Tai Duncan and Jhod Cardinal...

It’s a well-documented fact that writer/director David Ayer wasn’t happy with the cut of his DC Comics film adaptation Suicide Squad that Warner Bros. released back in 2016, and he and many DC fans are hoping the “Ayer Cut” will someday be sent out into the world. Now, during a conversation with Jon Bernthal on the podcast Real Ones, Ayer has admitted that the experience of working on Suicide Squad “broke” him.
Ayer told Bernthal (as reported by Variety), “Hollywood, I tell people, is like watching someone you love get f*cked by someone you hate. The big one is Suicide Squad. That shit broke me. That handed me my ass. Come right off (the 2014 war movie) Fury, right? I had the town in my hand — could’ve done anything, and I did do anything. And go on this journey with [Suicide Squad]. When Chris Eyre’s “Smoke Signals” won the audience prize in Sundance 25 years ago, the director thought the kudos would soon lead to a landslide of opportunities for Native talent. Amid a flourishing independent film scene, the road trip dramedy won acclaim and awards as the first feature written, directed and produced by Native filmmakers. But it took two decades, and a pivot to television, for Native voices to finally get a wider chance to be heard.
More than two decades later, Eyre is now an executive producer and director on AMC+’s Navajo noir series “Dark Winds,” based on the Tony Hillerman mystery novels. Longtime Hillerman fans Robert Redford and George R.R. Martin also serve as executive producers. “Dark Winds” premiered in 2022 as a wave of TV Westerns was proving massively popular, and yet, it’s very different from shows like “Yellowstone,” “Joe Pickett,” and “Justified” with its focus on a Native cast,...

Oh come on, you knew it was coming. Despite being a film that made just about every possible misstep they could take, had actually managed to accomplish something very few films do. Because did you know that today’s film actually won an Academy Award? All on top of a script that was written in just 6 weeks! After a first season spent reckoning with the past, with an inconveniently located statue of a dead white colonialist as the jumping-off point, Peacock’s Rutherford Falls is ready to look forward.
As characters like Reagan (Jana Schmieding) and Terry (Michael Greyeyes) start dreaming big for the town in general and for its Minishonka community more specifically, the storylines become defined less by conflict than cooperation, yielding a series that feels sweeter, more relaxed, less bogged down by the gravity of the past — but also one that seems to render its own white-guy co-lead less necessary than ever.
Initially, though, it looks like business as usual. Basically as soon as Nathan Rutherford (Ed Helms) returns to town in the second season premiere, he seems to fall back into his old habit of making everything about him. “I am a Nathan that knows I...

AMC’s new drama Dark Winds, based on Tony Hillerman’s bestselling series of buddy-cop mystery novels set on a Navajo reservation in New Mexico, is not the first television attempt at the property. Twenty years ago, PBS made a trio of TV-movies adapted from Hillerman’s books, starring Wes Studi as veteran detective Joe Leaphorn and Adam Beach as his young partner Jim Chee. The featurette is under 20 minutes and spends time on set and in post-production with filmmaker Jane Campion. The video is titled Behind The Scenes with Jane Campion and can be watched on Netflix for free along with the film. This is part of Netflix's push for The Power of the Dog during the Awards Season, with hopes it'll get more than a few Oscar nominations. It's pretty much a DVD Special Feature available on streaming. "A rare glimpse into the creative process of Academy Award winning writer, director and producer Jane Campion as she shares her memories of the making of The Power of the Dog." (More reading on the craft here.) Benedict Cumberbatch stars in the film with Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie, Frances Conroy, Keith Carradine,...

"It's about what human relationships are... and how far someone will go for love." When the trailer for this film first debuted, I was surprised to discover another sci-fi film was dropping this year. Swan Song is about a dying man who decides to let a clone take over his life, but it's not an easy choice. The film (and this video) explores the implications that come with that choice. Apple TV has debuted this featurette for Swan Song to promote its release on the streaming service. Set in the near future, Cameron Turner is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Presented with an experimental solution to shield his wife and son from grief, he grapples with altering their fate in this sci-fi drama. The always wonderful Mahershala Ali stars as Cameron, with Naomie Harris as his wife Poppy, plus Glenn Close, Awkwafina, Adam Beach, Lee Shorten, Dax Rey, Nyasha Hatendi,...

Mahershala Ali plays a man with a fatal disease who is offered an option to spare his family grief, in the science fiction romance Swan Song. Naomie Harris plays the sick man’s wife, Poppy, and Glenn Close plays the scientist who runs the facility who offers that option, in this drama written and directed by Benjamin Cleary.

“It started with Ben, with the script being so well written, the characters having the same essence but needing different things,” said Swan Song star and producer Mahershala Ali said of playing two roles in the Apple Original Film.
“It was always clear to me whose shoes I was in,” he added about the characters of Cameron and Jack. “I had to know what I wanted to do and do those things.”
Joined by Swan Song director and writer Benjamin Cleary, Ali was speaking Saturday at Deadline’s Contenders New York showcase.

Benjamin Cleary said his upcoming film Swan Song originated from his experience of losing three friends and his own existential questions about grief.
“When something like that happens, you see the grief emanate out and affect everyone else around you,” Cleary said Sunday during Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles panel at the DGA Theater. “In a way I just started thinking about, ‘What if someone else close to me passes away? What if I were to pass away? What would happen to my family?'”
Swan Song is Stutterer Oscar winner Cleary’s feature directorial debut and follows Ali as a man diagnosed with a terminal illness who is presented with an alternative solution by his doctor (Glenn Close) to shield his family from grief.

Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali celebrated a major milestone on Friday night with the AFI Fest debut of “Swan Song,” which marks his first film project in a leading role and first narrative feature as a producer.
“It was an emotional day, for me, I gotta say,” Ali told Variety on the red carpet outside the Tcl Chinese Theatre. “I went on a nice long walk trying to calm myself a bit, and really take in the moment.”
“It’s been a long time coming, but, in some ways, it went by very quickly. In a larger sense, I think I feel prepared for the moment as best I can,” he added. “I could have done it a year or two earlier, but with a lesser film probably, so to get to do it with this film that just feels so rich and [have] the characters and the supporting cast [be] phenomenal,...

Academy voters need to bring an open mind and a box of tissues for the heart-wrenching and moving “Swan Song.” Spearheaded by two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and Oscar nominee Naomie Harris, it’s difficult to find more pure and deliberate performances from two of today’s most revered actors. If this late-bloomer in the awards season can make enough noise and get enough butts in screening seats, a worthy play for several categories could be on the horizon. In addition, this seems like the first film that feels authentically identifiable to Apple Original Films, which will bode well for its awards brand moving forward. However, its most significant hurdle may be awards groups confusing it with the other “Swan Song” that opened over the summer.

Writer-director Benjamin Cleary’s “Swan Song” wastes little time posing deep, morally complex and compelling questions: If we could spare our loved ones from oppressive despair and heartache, would we make any sacrifice to do so? If we could clone ourselves without anyone knowing, would we? How do we identify to others and ourselves?
Part unconventionally-deconstructed love story, part high-concept sci-fi-tinged melancholic drama, the ultra-sleek, elegantly-realized tale is centered on one man’s journey toward answers and self-resolve in the face of death. The feature (which debuts at AFI Fest before its release in theaters and AppleTV Plus global premiere Dec. 17) strikes the right chord, rarely singing its tune off-key.
Graphic designer/artist Cameron Turner (Mahershala Ali) is wrestling with a big life decision. Terminally ill and with his condition rapidly worsening, he struggles with telling his loving, unwitting wife Poppy (Naomie Harris) about the fast-spreading disease taking over his...

"A man's made by patience and the odds against him." Netflix has revealed the full official trailer for Jane Campion's latest film The Power of the Dog, a gritty western romance set in Montana (though filmed in New Zealand). This first premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival to rave reviews, and also stopped by all the other major fests this fall: at the Telluride, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals. They spent months filming this in harsh conditions in New Zealand, and it's finally ready for debut. Charismatic rancher Phil Burbank inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love. Benedict Cumberbatch stars, with a cast including Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie, Frances Conroy, Keith Carradine, Peter Carroll, and Adam Beach. This is...

Jane Campion’s first film since 2009’s John Keats portrait “Bright Star” is a similarly moody study of masculinity, albeit one supplanting a Montana cattle ranch for early 1800s London. The Oscar-winning New Zealand filmmaker (“The Piano”) crafts an ice-blooded, prickly Western — starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemmons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee — about love, repression, and, well, power as the title indeed implies. There’s also Jonny Greenwood’s soothing (i.e. deeply unnerving) string-and-guitar score to massage things along as this quartet comes operatically undone at the hands of a terrifying Cumberbatch. Watch the new trailer for the film below.
Here’s Netflix’s official synopsis:
Severe, pale-eyed, handsome, Phil Burbank is brutally beguiling. All of Phil’s romance, power and fragility is trapped in the past and in the land: He can castrate a bull calf with two swift slashes of his knife; he swims naked in the river,...

"So he has everything?" "Even the memories you store deep in your subconscious." Apple TV has unveiled a trailer for an intriguing upcoming film titled Swan Song, the feature directorial debut of Irish filmmaker Benjamin Cleary already acclaimed for his short films. Not to be confused with the excellent Udo Kier film also titled Swan Song released earlier this year (why do they have to have the same title!). Set in the near future, Cameron Turner is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Presented with an experimental solution to shield his wife and son from grief, he grapples with altering their fate in this exploration of love, loss, and sacrifice. It seems to involve creating a clone, sans disease, with all his memories copied over. Mahershala Ali stars as Cameron, with Naomie Harris as his wife Poppy, plus Glenn Close, Awkwafina, Adam Beach, Lee Shorten, Dax Rey, Nyasha Hatendi, and JayR Tinaco.

Not to be confused with the Udo Kier movie released earlier this year with the same name, this “Swan Song” has a much more star-studded cast (no disrespect to Mr. Kier). This “Swan Song” film features Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Awkwafina, Glenn Close, and Adam Beach. The humanist sounding drama, an AppleTV+ production, is directed by Benjamin Cleary, best known for his short film “Stutterer” that earned him an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the 88th Academy Awards.

It’s two Mahershala Ali performances for the price of one in the upcoming Apple original film “Swan Song.” The science-fiction drama marks the feature directorial debut of Benjamin Cleary, who won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film with his acclaimed 2015 drama “Stutterer.” Ali plays a dying man who is presented with a cloning opportunity that would help his family avoid the grieving process. Starring opposite Ali is a supporting cast that includes Naomie Harris, Glenn Close, Awkwafina, and Adam Beach.
The official synopsis for the film reads: “Set in the near future, ‘Swan Song’ is a powerful, emotional journey told through the eyes of Cameron (Ali), a loving husband and father diagnosed with a terminal illness who is presented with an alternative solution by his doctor (Close) to shield his family from grief. As Cam grapples with whether or not to alter his family’s fate, he...

The American Film Institute said Tuesday that it has added the world premieres of Apple Original Films’ Swan Song, starring two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, and Halle Berry’s directorial debut Bruised from Netflix to this year’s AFI Fest lineup.
When Netflix picked up Bruised at the Toronto Film Festival last year, the pic was in its unfinished form, and its debut in November will be the first time it’s being shown to moviegoers in polished form.
Swan Song and Bruised will screen in-person at the Tcl Chinese Theatre on Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13, respectively.
Swan Song reps Oscar winner Benjamin Cleary’s (Stutterer) feature directorial debut and follows Ali as a man diagnosed with a terminal illness who is presented with an alternative solution by his doctor (Glenn Close) to shield his family from grief. There are two movies named "Swan Song" coming to us in the second half of 2021: one of them sees Mahershala Ali leading a top-shelf cast that includes Glenn Close, Naomie Harris, Awkwafina, and Adam Beach. The other one stars Udo Kier and is a Magnolia Pictures release, which already hit VOD in August.
With all due respect to Kier, it's the Ali-led "Swan Song" that merits attention here. Not only because of its stacked ensemble cast but because it marks another get for Apple, which continues to attract top talent and expand its line of original movies.
