What’s most shocking about the fact that it’s been 35 years since Mystery Science Theater 3000 began its run on Ktma in Minneapolis-St. Paul is the fact that it’s been only 35 years. Sporting a premise that’s gained added resonance since Covid redefined what it’s like to watch movies in isolation, the series has existed long enough—and in enough iterations—as to feel almost impervious to time, endlessly redefining itself as technology and media consumption mutate and grow, and, more frequently, as circumstances necessitate.
While the show’s hook—a human and their robots joke their way through bad movies—suggests a cynical outlook, its overriding imagination leaves room enough to enjoy both the films being watched and the jokes made at their expense. The classics that MST3K has yielded far exceed the limitations of this list’s format—to say nothing of the multitude of grace notes contained within,...

When Jim Mallon's "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie" was released in theaters back in 1996, many noted that it had a shorter running time than a single episode of the show on which it was based. "MST3K" ran for two hours, or 92 minutes with the commercials removed. The movie, in contrast, was an incredibly brief 77 minutes. This was in spite of an arch premise that needed to be explained to the audience, and multiple "host" sequences.
As it so happens, the original cut was much longer.
For the uninitiated: "MST3K" was a two-hour program that debuted on public access TV in Minnesota in 1988, and aired on Comedy Central and then the Sci-Fi Channel from 1989 to 1999. It has since been revived a few times and runs to this day on its own streaming service, the Gizmoplex. "MST3K" was typically scheduled late at night, recreating the experience of watching randomly programmed B-movies on after-hours network TV,...

The longevity of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" has been fascinating to behold. Beginning on Minnesota public access television in 1988, Joel Hodgson's watch-bad-movies-with-sarcastic-buddies cult TV series has deeply entrenched itself into the collected Jungian lore of every Gen-Xer worth their weight in flannel. For much of its life, "MST3K" lived either on Ktma in Minneapolis or, when it became more successful, running at midnight on Comedy Central.
Throughout, the show famously included the phrase "Keep circulating the tapes" in its credits. That was an acknowledgement from the show's producers that world-of-mouth and shared VHS recordings of "MST3K" were responsible for its modest cultural foothold. Fans would call friends, mail them cassettes, and implore that the cult grow. In 2008, when "MST3K" was finally made widely available through DVD box sets, Dr. Forrester/Crow T. Robot actor Trace Beaulieu said in an Av Club interview to "Keep circulating some of the tapes.

After three and a half decades and nearly as many cancellations, cult favorite comedy show Mystery Science Theater 3000 proves that sometimes a premise is just too damned good to die. To promote the fifth iteration of the beloved series, the cast – including creator Joel Hodgson, returning host Jonah Ray, and newcomer Emily Marsh – recently appeared Rolling Stone’s Twitch channel to discuss latest revival.
Originally airing on local Minneapolis station Ktma-tv from 1988-1989, MST3K has always been scrappy at heart. The show’s premise saw creator Joel Hodgson play the character Joel Robinson,...

"Mystery Science Theater 3000" officially ended its run in 1999, but never really went away.
The "watching bad movies with several funny friends" premise was simply too good to leave behind, and every cast member on the show participated in "MST3K"-like projects for years thereafter. The show's creator, Joel Hodgson, teamed up with Mary Jo Pehl, Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, and J. Elvis Weinstein to create "Cinematic Titanic," a riffing show wherein the cast was seen in silhouette, like on "MST3K," and were beholden to an evil, ill-defined corporate entity. Meanwhile, Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy formed "The Film Crew" wherein the...

Sometimes a long-running TV show finds itself linked to a certain holiday. Community had Christmas. The Simpsons has Halloween. Brooklyn 99 had Halloween, then changed it to Cinco de Mayo for scheduling reasons. Saturday Night Live has…Election Day, I guess? I probably should have thought this through a bit more.
While Mystery Science Theater 3000 has done a handful of Christmas-themed episodes, the series has a much deeper relationship with Thanksgiving. Turkey Day is essentially its legacy. It started on Thanksgiving and it always comes back to that one Thursday in late November, whether the show is on the air or not.
Back in 1988, Joel Hodgson created a new show idea inspired by a random image from the liner notes of an Elton John album, wherein a couple of silhouettes sit in front of a movie screen. He and some robot puppets would watch bad movies and crack jokes. While the...

Hey everybody, remember that time Yahoo decided to get into the streaming game? No? Oh right… Well back in the mid 2000s Yahoo decided they would join Netflix in the streaming realm and, well, nobody really knew or bothered to look or care. All I myself really remember was there was something to do with Community and how they lost a whole bunch of money and that pretty much killed it. Yeah that’s pretty vague and I could probably sit here and Yahoo it but… I don’t want to!
But… There was always that one show. That one show that only ever had one season on the platform. That one show that has been spoken about in hushed voices since it was first aired. A show that garnered some...

Paul Feig is back with his sci-fi comedy series Other Space. It was originally aired on Yahoo! Screen back in 2015, but was cancelled shortly after, due to the platform being no longer viable. The digital platform Dust has now picked it up and is scheduled to host the series in August.
Other Space takes place in the distant future, the year 2105, where the Universal Mapping Projects (Ump) has been created by a multi-national corporate coalition. Their intention is – “to explore the universe for the purpose of scientific inquiry”. The main vessel that we see during the show is the Ump Cruiser, which apparently was once used as the setting for a reality show.
After a series of random and bizarre tests to see who should captain the ship, the title is soon given to the eager young man Stewart Lipinski (played by Karan Soni). Of course, the ambitious Stewart is...

In the not too distant past — November 24th, 1988, A.D. — a moderately successful stand-up comedian named Joel Hodgson slipped on a jumpsuit. He then spent a few hours on a Minneapolis Uhf station making fun of the terrible movies Invaders from the Deep and Revenge of the Mysterions from Mars, alongside a couple of handmade robot puppets. Only a handful of lucky Minnesotans were watching Ktma that Thanksgiving night, exactly 30 years ago. They all saw the birth of a pop culture phenomenon: a charmingly cheap-looking show that, no joke, changed television.

In 2015, Paul Feig released “Other Space,” his sci-fi comedy that ran for one season on Yahoo! Screen. The comedy stars Karan Soni, Milana Vayntrub and Neil Casey, as well as “Mystery Science Theater 3000” legends Joel Hodgson and Trace Beaulieu. “Other Space” is set in the early 22nd century and follows the misadventures of a bickering space exploration crew whose star cruiser ends up lost in an unknown universe.
Upon its release the series received critical acclaim, yet it toiled in anonymity on Yahoo’s fledgling streaming service, which has since shut down.

According to Hodgson, he and Oswalt emailed back and forth a bit after the Kickstarter campaign began, with Hodgson offering him a guest writing spot and then an on-camera role (Oswalt's response: "Oh My God"). Fans of Paul Feig have a new group of geeks to fall in love with, and the crew of the spaceship that makes up the set of Yahoo Screen’s Other Space are as odd and “freaky” as anything he’s come up with before.
Stewart Lipinski (Karan Soni) is mildly interested in pursuing a career in galaxy mapping, or whatever, and as we enter the show, he is taking his final test to become Captain of his own spaceship. He wins out over his sister, Karen (Bess Rous), largely because she is so… intense, that even the higher-ups of the space program are scared of her.
This is not exciting news for Stewart, who doesn’t want to spend a long space voyage dealing with her, especially when he has to convince her that he’s in charge.
The crew is basically a semi-typical gaggle of misfits, and Stewart...

Set in 2105, "Other Space" chronicles the adventures of a group of noobie space explorers hurtling through a galaxy full of aliens. The difference between alien gills and brain holes are explored along with plenty of other shenanigans. Karan Soni ("Safety Not Guaranteed") and Milana Vayntrub ("Silicon Valley") star alongside "Mystery Science Theater 3000" veterans Joel Hodgson and Tracy Beaulieu. Feig is also hard at work rebooting the "Ghostbusters" franchise, with Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon donning the iconic jumpsuits. The first season of "Other Space" will consist of...

Paul Feig’s slate has never been so packed. Or so popular. His upcoming espionage chucklefest Spy is gathering positive reviews, he’s deep in development on the all-female led Ghostbusters reboot and if a recent report is correct, he’ll be shaping a Play-Doh movie for Fox. Before any of those come to fruition, however, the director’s penchant for the funny is being catapulted to the far regions of the galaxy in his forthcoming Yahoo! comedy series, Other Space.
Like the recently-revived Community, the show will debut exclusively on the online giant’s network, and orbit around a spaceship crew out and about on a ‘routine collection mission’ that leads them to uncover one of mankind’s greatest discoveries. To whet those appetites ahead of the series’ debut, the first trailer does a sterling job of clueing us in to the haphazard batch of space explorers as they embark on their mission.

With "Ghostbusters" on the horizon, and his hands in "Play-Doh," Paul Feig has graduated to the level of tentpole director. So, you might have forgotten that his early career found him the master of creating funny, flawed characters like those in the beloved "Freaks & Geeks." Even "Bridesmaids" benefitted from having three dimensional people at the core of the outrageous comedy. Can he work that touch again with "Other Space"? Well, see for yourself in the first trailer. Cinematic Titanic is the live movie riffing show from the creator and original cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and they’re bringing their show to St. Louis this Saturday October 12th for what they’re calling their ‘Farewell Tour’ which I guess means this is the last time you’ll be able to see these guys riff on movies. Like MST3K, the show was created by Joel Hodgson and features the same team that first brought the Peabody award winning cult-classic series to life: Trace Beaulieu (Crow, Dr. Forrester), J. Elvis Weinstein (Tom Servo, Dr. Erhardt), Frank Conniff (TV’s Frank), and Mary Jo Pehl (Pearl Forrester), Cinematic Titanic continues the tradition of riffing on ‘the unfathomable’, ‘the horribly great’, and the just plain ‘cheesy’ movies from the past.

Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Movie
Stars: Michael J. Nelson, Trace Beaulieu, Kevin Murphy, Jim Mallon, John Brady | Written by Michael J. Nelson, Trace Beaulieu, Jim Mallon, Kevin Murphy, Mary Jo Pehl, Paul Chaplin, Bridget Jones | Directed by Jim Mallon
Distributors Mediumrare Entertainment are becoming synonymous here in the UK with quality cult releases and that’s not going to change with the release on Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Movie. Making it’s Blu-ray debut – in fact, I think this might be it’s UK debut full stop, the film is somewhat of an acquired taste. Set between seasons 6 and 7 of the series (only season 8 has been broadcast here in the UK), the official plot goes something a little like this: “Mad scientist, Dr Clayton Forrester has concocted a diabolical scheme for world domination, to subject the human race to the worst movies ever made. This time it’s...

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Presents: "Manos" The Hands of Fate
DVD

Starring Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, Kevin Murphy, Frank Conniff, Mike Nelson
Release Date: September 13, 2011
"Well... just in case you forgot, ladies and gentlemen... 'Manos': The Hands of Fate."
Yes folks, it's the movie that is often voted as not only the worst movie ever mocked by the valiant crew of the Satellite of Love, but also the worst movie ever made Period. A movie so bad that everyone involved in its making either died of shame or vanished from the face of the earth. A movie so godawful that it provided the basis for the single greatest episode of one of the best television shows in the history of civilization. Now it's back on DVD in a two-disc set devoted entirely to this movie and the classic of cathode comedy that brought it...

MST3K Vs. Gamera: Mystery Science Theater 3000 Vol. Xxi
DVD
Starring Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, Kevin Murphy, Frank Conniff, Jim Mallon, Patrick Brantseg
Release Date: August 2, 2011
One of the many reasons why Shout! Factory has become my new favorite DVD distributor, in addition to their awesome reissue of vintage drive-in cult classics from producer Roger Corman, is because of the great love and respect they have shown Mystery Science Theater 3000 since taking over the license to reissue classic episodes of the show from Rhino several years ago.
In terms of overall presentation Shout!'s MST3K box sets have trumped Rhino in every way possible. I've spoken before at great length about how Mystery Science Theater 3000 was not only one of my favorite television shows of all time, but also a major influence on me as a person, and if you doubt that assertion you may feel free to...

“Uh-oh. Seven years bad acting.”
It always feels like Christmas (no puns about Santa Claus films) when a new Mystery Science Theater 3000 DVD set comes out. For all us fans out there, we wait with bated breath for every release, each time getting four new DVDs, usually with two Joel and two Mike episodes. This time around it’s four episodes from the Comedy Central era, all featuring the show’s creator and original host, Joel Hodgson. In the past I would have been a bit disappointed by this news, considering I grew up watching Mike Nelson’s run but now that I’ve watched the complete run of the show, I’ve grown to appreciate and even love Joel’s dry wit. And these four episodes give a great selection to people who might not be too familiar with the inhabitants from the Satellite of Love.

This week, Shout! Factory releases Mystery Science Theater 3000 Vol. Xix (yes, that's 19), featuring four more classic episodes from the show that made it Ok to talk back to the screen: Devil Doll, Devil Fish, Ed Wood's Bride of the Monster, and Phil Tucker's infamous Robot Monster. A writer for most of the show's run, Mary Jo Pehl (who played the evil Mrs. Forrester during the SyFy run of MST3K), sat down to talk about her history with the cult cable classic as well as her current movie-riffing project Cinematic Titanic, which teams her with MST3K creator Joel Hodgson and fellow show vets Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, and J. Alberta - Spring is here and truth shall be in the air around Durham, North Carolina as the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival blossoms from April 8 - 11. This is a four day feast of prime cinema featuring real people with real lives and real issues that weren’t shaped by the beancounters in marketing. Last year’s festival featured Oscar winner The Cove and nominees Burma VJ and Food Inc. Looking through this year’s line up, there’s plenty reasons to make the trip to the Bull City if you need to escape from the unmitigated hype of Tiger Woods at the Masters.

Take one barely skilled Chinese martial artist. Add a beefy hunk of traditional blaxploitation, and top off with a complete selection of Asian actors who played bad guys on M*A*S*H. Stir rigorously.
Bake for two hours under the high heat of Mystery Science Theater 3000-inspired quips, and you end up with the new live DVD from Cinematic Titanic, "East Meats Watts."
This latest release from MST3K veterans Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, Josh Weinstein, Mary Jo Pehl and Frank Conniff features a clunky 70's mess on celluloid mocked before an affectionate live audience. Often overlooked by horror fans Mystery Science Theatre 3000 was an excellent source for forgotten and obscure horror fans. With the release MST3K Xv horror fans are treated to two gems of horror/ sci-fi magic.
For those of you who may have blocked out the early 90’s, MST3K was a show with a premise so simple many of us kicked ourselves for not thinking of it first. Joel Robinson (Joel Hodgson) is a man stranded on a satellite in space with two robots, Crow T. Robot (Trace Beaulieu) and Tom Servo (Kevin Murphy) whose only task is to watch and berate the worst movies ever made. The show began its humble days on Ktma-tv in Hopkins, Minnesota but was quickly picked up by a fledgling Comedy Central, where it ran for 7 season then finally ended its days on the Sci-Fi Channel giving us a total of eleven incredible seasons. Mystery Science Theater 3000 began as an attempt to fill a hole in the Saturday-night schedule of a struggling Twin Cities Uhf station in 1988. I am a huge fan of bad movies. Let's just say a nerd for bad B-budget/cult flicks. I used to watch theses guys religiously and I am very pleased to bring news of the 20th Anniversary of Mystery Science Theater 3000, some shaky video (Below) from S.D. Comic Con 08 (that I am sure the guys would make fun of ) and a new brand new 20th edition set from Shout! Factory. Who can forget Manos: The Hands Of Fate MST3K style. Note: Manos is hands in spanish. So the title is Hands: The Hands Of Fate. Okay... My jokes are bad! Torgo would say, "The Master Would Not Approve!" But, He would approve this great box set.Torgo's Revenge: Techno Remix (Below)
