While Laura Linney could finally nab her first Emmy for playing Wendy Byrde on “Ozark,” there is another way she can be rewarded for the Netflix drama this year: as the director of the fourth and final season’s 11th episode, “Pound of Flesh and Still Kickin’.” If submitted for this effort, her directorial debut, Linney could pull off a victory in a similar fashion to her co-star and onscreen hubby Jason Bateman, who still hasn’t earned an acting Emmy for the show but won directing when no one expected it in 2019.
Bateman was all the way down in sixth place in our odds when he won for the Season 2 opener, “Reparations.” But in retrospect, we shouldn’t have underestimated the eventual champ, who had built a ton of goodwill as one of the show’s stars, executive producers and main directors. Walter Bernstein, who was blacklisted by Hollywood in the 1950s but returned to writing on many films, including the Oscar-nominated script for The Front, has died at 101.

Exclusive: The Outsider, starring Ben Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo, has been put into turnaround after HBO opted not to proceed with a second season. MRC, the studio behind the drama series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, is taking Season 2 out to market.
The pitch, originally presented to HBO, includes a script and bible for a continuation of the story beyond King’s book, which was the source material for Season 1. Series writer/executive producer Richard Price crafted the Season 2 storyline with King’s blessing, sources said. Centered on Erivo’s Holly character, it expands King’s universe, exploring the human, naturalistic and inexplicable with a sustained pervasive dread you can’t put your finger on.
“We enjoyed our collaboration with Richard, Jason [Bateman], Andrew [Bernstein] and the MRC team, and we wish them well in continuing the world created by the brilliant Stephen King,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline.

The Emmy Awards ballot for Best Drama Directing lists 295 episodes (from 156 series), so there will eight nominees in this category for the first time, per new rules. Although this category never had a guaranteed seven slots, close votes resulted in lineups of seven nominees in six of the last 15 years, including last year:
“Game of Thrones” season 8: “The Iron Throne” (David Benioff & D.B. Weiss) “Game of Thrones” season 8: “The Last of the Starks” (David Nutter) “Game of Thrones” season 8: “The Long Night” (Miguel Sapochnik) “The Handmaid’s Tale” season 2B: “Holly” (Daina Reid) “Killing Eve” season 2: “Desperate Times” (Lisa Brühlmann) Winner — “Ozark” season 2: “Reparations” (Jason Bateman) “Succession” season 1: “Celebration” (Adam McKay)
Although Jason Bateman returned as a director on “Ozark” for its third season, he cannot repeat his win, as he is instead submitting the pilot of “The Outsider,” which is next to “Ozark” on the long ballot.

The Outsider Episode 4
It seems as if every procedural type program has a scene in which someone does some Internet sleuthing, usually through some ridiculously named program like Searchalot or Doctor Sleuth. These scenes, by and large, are never interesting. Everyone searches online for things a dozen times a day or more, it's something that's more fun to do than watch. Making that remotely interesting is one of the most difficult tasks for any director, and yet as Holly sits in the tub, searching El Coco and various other old-world bogeymen, it's not boring: it’s riveting.
The camera watches Holly, transfixed, as she clicks through an impressive array of folk art monsters with wide, absorbing eyes; it's a greatest hits of grandmothers’ nightmares.

From her introduction, the dedicated detective Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo) is something to behold. She's strange, and compulsively watchable, and in possession of some compelling traits. Somewhere between superstitious, savant, genius, and the autism spectrum, Holly falls somewhere roughly between Sherlock Holmes and Monk in her list of eccentricities. But there's something about the character that is more than just a collection of quirks.
That's due in no small part to the incredible performance by Cynthia Erivo. For those unfamiliar, Erivo picked up three-fourths of the vaunted Egot thanks to a much-lauded turn in the most recent Broadway revival of The Color Purple, and she has two chances to capture the Oscar portion of the award at...

“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” is changing showrunners again.
“Prison Break” creator Paul Scheuring, who was tapped to replace Carlton Cuse and run season 3 of the Amazon show less than three months ago, has stepped away from the role, Variety has confirmed.
Vaun Wilmott, who previously worked with Scheuring on “Prison Break” and recently served as a producer on “Star Trek: Discovery,” will be taking over showrunning duties for the forthcoming season.
Cuse left the series in March 2019, and “All The Money in the World” writer David Scarpa was originally in position to showrun season 3, according to sources, but reportedly exited the production soon after coming on board.
“Jack Ryan” stars John Krasinski as the titular CIA agent who, in the second season, ventures into a Venezuelan jungle to investigate an illegal arms deal. Cuse originally partnered with fellow “Lost” writer Roland to bring the Tom Clancy adaptation to the small screen.

Exclusive: Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring has left Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan less than three months after he joined the Amazon thriller drama series as executive producer and Season 3 showrunner. His No.2, Vaun Wilmott (Star Trek: Discovery) will take over day-to-day showrunner duties.
Scheuring is primarily known as a screenwriter and TV creator who lives in Northern California and not as a in-the-trenches showrunner. After giving it a try on Jack Ryan, he found it not to be a good fit and asked to e released, sources said.
In John Krasinski, Jack Ryan has a star and executive producer who is also an accomplished writer-director and has been very involved in running the show, including the making of key creative and staffing decisions. Having survived the end of “Game of Thrones” with buzzy new series like “Euphoria,” “Watchmen,” and “His Dark Materials,” in addition to well-watched new seasons of “Succession,” “Barry,” and “Big Little Lies,” HBO is preparing for its first post-Westeros year with a similar onslaught of exciting adaptations, enticing follow-ups, and shows skewing toward a younger demographic.
The latter point is perhaps more important than ever, given that 2020 marks another milestone for HBO: the debut of HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s all-in-one streaming platform that bundles its various networks (and their programs) in one app. HBO Max will have its own originals, but HBO is still the service’s crown jewel (as evidenced by those three telling letters right before “Max”). It’ll be up to the former Home Box Office as much as, if not more than, any other WarnerMedia network to drive subscriptions, and that’s harder to do without the No.

Carlton Cuse will not be returning as showrunner for Season 3 of “Jack Ryan,” Variety has learned.
The former “Lost” helmer will stay on as Executive Producer, and Amazon has launched a search to find a replacement showrunner for the John Krasinski thriller series.
News of Cuse’s departure comes less than a month after the show was renewed for a third season by Amazon. He originally partnered with former “Lost” writer Graham Roland to bring the Tom Clancy adaptation to the small screen.
Cuse will likely now turn his attention to Netflix’s “Locke & Key,” which he is set to co-run with Meredith Averill. The show is currently shooting, but no premiere date has yet been announced.
Produced by Paramount Television, “Jack Ryan” was originally given a two-season order in 2016. Season 1 premiered last year to mostly positive reviews — mainly for star John Krasinski, who plays the titular CIA operative.

Amazon has picked up a third season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.”
Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke made the announcement at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Wednesday.

A new Fourth of July-centric trailer for “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” was released on Wednesday and wasn’t short on action, even if titular star John Krasinski didn’t have any actual dialogue.
The latest snippet for the upcoming eight-episode first season of the show featured a bunch of action, including footage of Ryan in his cubicle before he sets out on what appears to be a dangerous message, and has to get out of a perilous situation as well.
The clip, titled “Presidents,” also features the voices of several U.S. presidents. It opens with President Clinton, who says: “Though our challenges are fearsome, so are our strengths.” We then hear President Trump’s voice, followed by President Kennedy’s.

Amazon has officially greenlit an eight-episode second season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, starring and executive produced by John Krasinski, well ahead of the action drama series’ August 31 global debut on Prime Video. The writing team for Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, from Paramount Television and Skydance Television, had already been working on scripts for season two under series creators/executive producers Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland who continue as co-showrunners. The show’s producing team also had been scouting international locations for the globe-trotting adventure, a reinvention with a modern sensibility of the famed Tom Clancy hero.
The formal Season 2 green light comes on the heels of the blockbuster success of Krasinski’s horror movie A Quiet Place, which he co-wrote, directed and starred in, turning him into an instant hot commodity in features.

Not everyone is impressed with Steven Spielberg's gracious gesture of sending all five best director Oscar nominees a gift basket of champagne and caviar.
PETA's Andrew Bernstein responded to the news in THR by sending Spielberg a note that opened with a compliment: PETA activists are "big fans of yours" — but not fans of real caviar.
"Our favorite caviar is vegan — it's sustainable and cruelty-free, and it's the only one that we think E.T. and the Bfg would approve of," Bernstein wrote, citing Spielberg's films. "We wanted to get you started with this award-winning vegan...

Fear The Walking Dead double-episode season two finale takes one step forward and frustratingly, two steps back...
This review contains spoilers.
2.14 Wrath & 2.15 North
A couple of seasons ago, my wife stopped watching The Walking Dead and thus, she’s never bothered with Fear The Walking Dead. While I was watching the so-called two-hour season finale (really, just two episodes back to back, but I’ll get to that later), she turned to me and apologised. She said, “I’m really sorry that you have to watch this for work.” Two weeks ago, she came into the room and asked me if I even liked watching the show, to which I could only manage a shrug.
It’s not that Fear The Walking Dead doesn’t have some great moments, because it does. It also has great characters, at least part of the time, and a much better...
