Founded Granada Television with his brother Cecil in 1955
He was awarded a Life Peerage (Lord/Baron) in the 1969 Queen's Honours List for his services to television.
He was made a Fellow of the British Film Institute in 1984 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to television culture.
He is survived by his son and two daughters.
Co-founder of the London Film Society in 1925.
An avid art collector, he bequeathed part of his collection to the Manchester Art Gallery, including works by Chagall and Modigliani.
Lifelong friend and collaborator of Alfred Hitchcock.
During World War II, served as film adviser to the Ministry of Information.
