- Distinguished British editor, in films from 1935. Learned under the American editor Merrill White, later joining the crew of ex-newsreel editor David Lean. At Pinewood by 1936, assistant to the editor Lister Laurence, working on 'quota quickies' produced by Anthony Havelock-Allan. Full editor from 1942, starting to work on feature films after wartime military service, best known for The Dam Busters (1955) and Ice Cold in Alex (1958).
- In a later interview, he commented about his editing of Look Back in Anger (1959): "I hated it. I still hate it. I can't bear that left-wing philosophy. And I hated the fact that I had to do it".
