- He was awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1999 Queen's Birthday Honors List for his services to musical theater.
- He was nominated for a 2003 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award: The Hilton Award for Best New Musical of 2002 for "Bombay Dreams", performed at the Apollo Theatre.
- His lyrics for "Tell Me on a Sunday", performed at the Gielgud Theatre, was nominated for a 2004 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Outstanding Musical Production of 2003.

He also co-wrote the end credits song, "Surrender", from Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), making him the most prolific lyricist of the 007 movie series.
