In the "Star Trek" episode "The Enemy Within", Captain Kirk (William Shatner) beams up from the planet Alpha 177 covered in a mysterious magnetic dust. Unbeknownst to any of the Enterprise crew, the dust has fouled up the transporter and created a second Kirk inside its memory buffer. After Kirk leaves the room, the second Kirk materializes ... but displays an altered personality. It seems that Kirk has been bifurcated into a gentle version of himself and a cruel, aggressive version of himself. For much of "The Enemy Within," the Evil Kirk stalks around the halls of the U.S.S. Enterprise, startling the crew and accosting Yeoman Rand (Grace Lee Whitney). Gentle Kirk soon realizes that he needs his aggression back in order to be whole. Eventually, the two Kirks confront one another.

“Days of Our Lives” fans who are worried that their favorite 57-year-old soap won’t be recognizable once writing and producing it specifically for Peacock finally airs early next year, fear not. Daytime legend Deidre Hall assures fans, “We’re doing it exactly the same as we always have and will continue doing it that way.”
As the old adage goes, the only things you can count on are death and taxes. Well, and change. Add that to the list. And although “death” is not something you can count on when it comes to soap operas – Hall’s Dr. Marlena Evans has been presumed dead but was not four times since she joined the show in 1976 — a switch from its longtime run on NBC to NBCUniversal’s streaming service is the only change happening. Will it get a little more risqué with language or storyline because it’s now on cable?...

If the drama wasn’t enough on Beyond Salem, the team behind the Days of Our Lives spinoff on Peacock have created a way for fans to enjoy the short-term sudser long after the last episode drops today.
D. Brent Nelson and Ken Corday produced another 44-minute score soundtrack chapter 2 that’s now available across all digital platforms.
Released by Corday Productions, Inc., the album was recorded at Eastwood Scoring Stage on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, Calif. Nelson and Corday hired a 44-piece live string orchestra and a harpist to help set the tone for the second iteration.
“There are places in our show where a cinematic approach enhances the storytelling in a big way,” said Nelson in a statement. “Yes, we are absolutely pushing the envelope in terms of putting music to picture in our genre… And sure, we could settle for a string section half this size.

Now streaming on Peacock, the first episode of Beyond Salem‘s second season wastes no time reuniting Days of Our Lives fans with one of the soap’s most-missed characters — though not everyone is thrilled to see her.
The week-long event begins with Ciara and Ben arriving in Montreal, where they’re greeted by none other than Hope Williams Brady (played by Kristian Alfonso, who left Days in 2020). It’s all hugs and kisses as Hope finally meets her grandson, but once the group is settled in Hope’s new Canadian digs, the gloves come off.

Richard Roundtree’s two-fisted detective tale burst on the scene announcing that a craze called Blaxploitation was on the way. No matter that the movie is somewhat slow and drab — John Shaft was the identification figure denied black audiences for 60 years, a hero who takes no guff from nobody and consistently tells The Man where to head in. Even bigger was the music theme by Isaac Hayes, which transforms Shaft’s casual stroll through Times Square into an iconic image of the 1970s. Criterion’s presentation of Gordon Parks’ smash hit has the original feature in 4K Uhd and in Blu-ray with the first sequel Shaft’s Big Score! in Blu-ray only.

Most noted for its troubled production background, this hospital-set murder thriller turns a doctor into a detective: James Coburn’s medico undertakes an amateur investigation of a crime involving an illegal abortion, and the cover-up thereof. Although tangled up in the crazy James Aubrey-Kirk Kerkorian regime at MGM, Blake Edwards’ film can boast a strong supporting cast: Jennifer O’Neill, Pat Hingle, Elizabeth Allan, Dan O’Herlihy, James Hong, Michael Blodgett, Regis Toomey and John Hillerman.

When even Joss Whedon can’t nail a character, you know there’s a problem. For decades now, film and television has been struggling to take Wonder Woman from the comics and bring her to a wider audience. So far, they’ve managed the Super Friends and the delightfully awful television series with picture-perfect Lynda Carter. However, there are scores of failed attempts beginning with the truly awful William Dozier-produced try out footage through last year’s cringe-worthy attempt from David E. Kelly.
Perhaps the most maligned of the attempts is the ABC Movie of the Week, Wonder Woman, which aired once in March 1974 and did well enough in the ratings for a series to be considered but was seriously retooled into the Carter vehicle. Thanks to Warner Archive, that 73 minute effort is now available for completists everywhere.
Yes, she’s Diana, princess of the Amazons and sent to man’s world.

Before Lynda Carter took the heroine back to World War 2 for her “New, Original” incarnation in 1975, statuesque tennis pro-turned-performer Cathy Lee Crosby swung the magic lasso in a very different TV incarnation of Wonder Woman. As developed by scribe John D.F. Black (Star Trek, Shaft), and seemingly influenced by her recent turn as a mod, cat-suited crime-fighter in the pages of her DC Comics home, this Amazon Princess was more superspy than superhero. Still, many of the expected wondrous elements from bracelets and lassos to Paradise Island and invisible jets all make an appearance, albeit with a sleek, seventies espionage super-action refit. Three years before taking up residence on Fantasy Island, Ricardo Montalban plays laconic lothario Abner Smith, who lurks at the top of the conspiracy to make off with ultra-secret code books – leading Agent Prince to discover an Amazon sister-in-exile (Anitra Ford). Following the popular release of its...

After all the debates, controversies, and stereotype accusations have cleared, looking back on Blaxploitation cinema today it’s easy to see healthy portions of the crime and action genres. Using these genres and the struggles of the black community, these films were created for those that wanted to see African American characters on the big screen not taking shit from the man, “getting over”, and–above all else—being the heroes in movies. In the documentary Baad Asssss Cinema, Samuel L. Jackson gives his take on the heroes of Blaxploitation: “We were tired of seeing the righteous black man. And all of a sudden we had guys who were…us. Or guys who did the things we wanted those guys to do.”
The unsung supporting players in these films that backed Fred Williamson and Pam Grier and many other stars were people acting and making a living off of it.

Days Of Our Lives, NBC's longest-running scripted television series, embarks on a new era of romance by bringing back two of its most beloved characters, Deidre Hall ("Marlena Evans") and Drake Hogestyn ("John Black"). Deidre has starred as the adored Dr. Marlena Evans on the show for 35 of its 45 years and is recognized as one of the biggest icons of daytime television, while Drake has appeared alongside her for 25 years as half of one of the biggest super-couples in soap opera history. Together the two have had four weddings, raised a family together, and survived paralysis, amnesia, false deaths, and mind-control, all while representing the idea that true love and family conquers all.
Executive Producer Ken Corday has promised to refocus efforts on romance and core family values and initiated its transformation with the appointment of a new head writing team, Marlene McPherson and Darrell Ray Thomas, and a new executive producing team,...

Deidre Hall is set to reprise her role of Dr. Marlena Evans on ‘Days of Our Lives,’ Entertainment Weekly is reporting. A spokeswoman for the soap opera confirmed the news that the actress will return on September 26, 2011. Hall immediately became one of the most beloved actresses in daytime after she joined ‘Days of Our Lives’ in 1976. Fans expressed their outrage after she was fired in 2009 due to severe budget cuts by NBC. The veteran was reportedly earning a soap opera high of $60,000 a month. With NBC firing both Hall and Drake Hogestyn, who played her on-screen husband John Black, ‘Days of Our Lives’ was able...

Marlena’s coming home! A spokeswoman for Days of Our Lives has confirmed that Deidre Hall will reprise her role as Dr. Marlena Evans on Sept. 26. Her return marks just one of many changes the soap has in store to please old (and, with any luck, new) fans.
Hall joined the soap in 1976 and went on to become one of the most beloved actresses in daytime — so much so that fans went apoplectic when she was dropped from the sudser in 2009 due to severe budget cuts. At the time, she was reportedly earning $60,000 per month, a veritable mint for daytime actresses.

In Part 3 below, Anderson shares her favorite stories, getting feedback from fans and more.
We Love Soaps TV: How did you get feedback when you wrote for Days. If someone didn't like something how did they let you know?
Sheri Anderson: They might have gotten phone calls at the studio, but we got fan mail. My mother used to go through all my fan mail and sometimes you would see repeats and you would think it was the same people writing back. Yesterday, NBC announced that its long-running—and sometimes possessed-character featuring—soap opera Days of Our Lives had been renewed for two more years, with an option for an additional third year. The new contract ensures that the daytime drama will be on the air through at least September 2013. And no surprise, the news corresponded with a milestone for the show—its rather amazing 45th anniversary of being on the air. That’s a feat, when you consider that major soaps have been killed off both this year and last. (R.I.P., As the World Turns and Guiding Light.)

It’s likely you’ve seen Clifton Collins Jr. but haven’t known it. He took on Captain Kirk and company as Ayel, Nero’s right hand man in Star Trek as well as making Chev Chelios’ life more of a living hell as El Huron in Crank: High Voltage. Entertainment has spanned his family for generations, notably with his grandfather Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez who did a number of roles in the 1950s and 60s, the best known being his take as an innkeeper in Rio Bravo. Likely Pedro would be proud of his grandson, who’s coming into his own with projects like Boondock Saints II, a new Mike Judge film, and even taking a turn behind the camera.
