Last year, we lost Goodfellas star Ray Liotta, who passed away in his sleep at the age of 67. Now Deadline has shared a previously unreleased interview they conducted with Liotta a couple years before he died – and during the interview, Liotta mentioned that he felt stupid for turning down a role in director Tim Burton‘s 1989 version of Batman.
Batman first came up when Liotta was talking about writer/director Noah Baumbach’s Netflix-released film Marriage Story, which he had a role in. He said, “They started with the Batman stuff and triggered the whole comic book genre, and now most of the studios are putting an unbelievable amount of money into things like that. But movies like this one, Marriage Story… Thank God for Netflix, because they’ll finance your movie. I don’t know who else would give money for Marriage Story. It’s a great movie,...

On today’s Crew Call we talk with The English composer Federico Jusid, who came into Hollywood’s spotlight after the industry caught his score on the Oscar winning 2009 foreign film, The Secret in Their Eyes.
In the Prime Video series, Emily Blunt plays Cornelia Locke, a woman who arrives to America in 1890 to avenge her son’s death. While an Ennio Morricone sound is natural with any western’s score, Jusid went further to distinguish The English from the rest, incorporating 19th century piano and strings to represent Locke’s homeland.
But if you’re relishing The English on a big screen TV, Jusid’s score sings through, giving it a theatrical quality. Talking about achieving that style, the composer tells Crew Call, “You allow yourself to use a wider orchestra, and of course, sometimes to take a slower tempo.” Jusid expounds on how he boarded the Hugo Blick created series,...

“The English” is hoping for a successful Emmys season coming up, with the show on the precipice for a Best Limited Series bid as well as a Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor nomination for Chaske Spencer, while Emily Blunt is odds-on to be cited in the lead actress category. But they may be joined by the ever-reliable supporting player Rafe Spall, who emerged from Amazon Prime Video’s sweeping western series as one of the best things about it — if not the best.
“The English,” by creator Hugo Blick, follows Blunt as Lady Cornelia Locke, who is on the hunt for revenge in a search for the man responsible for her son’s death. Along the way, she meets Spencer’s Eli Whipp/Wounded Wolf, who is on a quest of his own — to claim back the land he is owed for his service in the US Army. The...

BAFTA gave out their Craft Awards on Sunday, 23 April. As with the Primetime Emmys, the British academy also devotes a weekend to celebrating the creative arts. The BAFTA TV Craft Awards are split into 20 categories, with six devoted to fictional programming, six to factual programming, and a further four in combined fields.
The BBC medical drama “This is Going to Hurt” won three awards — Editing (Fiction), Scripted Casting, and Writer (Drama) for show creator Adam Kay. Kay adapted his best-selling memoir, which chronciled his experiences as a doctor in the NHS. Kay won in a stacked category that included Pete Jackson (“Somewhere Boy”), Alice Oseman (“Heartstopper) and Tony Schumacher (“The Responder”). “This is Going to Hurt” will contend at the Emmys in the limited series categories.
Meanwhile, Writer (Comedy) went to Lisa McGee for her work on “Derry Girls,” which follows a teenage girl and family in friends in 1990s Northern Ireland.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The English Season 1, Episode 6, “Cherished.”] The English may be set against a post-Civil War Western landscape, but the tale told in Hugo Blick‘s sprawling six-part series is a little different than your usual frontier fare. A revenge story at its core, Emily Blunt‘s Lady Cornelia Locke is determined to make Rafe Spall‘s David Melmont pay for his actions. What might those actions be? If you’ve yet to tune in, now would be a good time to turn back and binge, because we’re heading into major spoiler territory. David Melmont is a swindling businessman who in a flashback to years before her quest, tricked Cornelia into believing Thomas Trafford (Tom Hughes) — the man she entrusted with funds from her father to help build up the American West — had become imprisoned for criminal activity ranging from the killing of innocents to indulging in brothels. Tricking Cornelia out of money to ...

Actress Emily Blunt has been a part of a number of acclaimed and beloved projects throughout her career thus far, from “The Devil Wears Prada” to “Into the Woods” to “A Quiet Place,” but her latest struck a chord with her in a unique way.
The eight-episode limited series “The English” not only finds Blunt leading a 19th Century-set bloody revenge Western, but also marks her first time producing a project of her own. Something she says her husband, actor and filmmaker John Krasinski, has been encouraging her to do for quite some time.

At the heart of this subversive frontier tale is a sumptuous but doomed love story. That’s what makes it the renowned TV writer’s most radical and pleasurable work yet
Though born in Henley-on-Thames, Hugo Blick could have been a cowboy. Aged 18, his concerned parents decided he needed to have his waywardness ironed out of him. He was packed off to Montana and put under the tutelage of a family friend who happened to be an avid outdoorsman and former US air force captain.
“I was thought to need a stabilising influence,” recalls the 57-year-old writer, director and actor over video call from New York. The air force captain taught Blick how to shoot and hunt. “Apologies to any vegans out there,” he says. He also learned how to spin a horse. Until I watched all six episodes of Amazon Prime Video’s overstuffed limited series “The English,” I believed I’d follow Emily Blunt just about anywhere. As it turns out, maybe not to the American West circa 1890. In writer/director Hugo Blick’s uneven revisionist Western, she plays Lady Cornelia Locke. The tragic British aristocrat travels across the pond hell-bent on revenge following her child’s untimely death under mysterious circumstances, largely explained in an insufferable voiceover.
Once on the plains, the handsome horsewoman and amateur archer becomes a target for almost any bounder she meets. Her bagful of cash that keeps falling open makes her no less conspicuous. There's almost always a market for gritty westerns, but there's been a bounty of well-made, pitch-black tales of the American west lately. Joining the ranks of shows like "1883" and films like the Academy Award-winning "Power of the Dog" is "The English," a new Prime Video and BBC limited series from writer and director Hugo Blick about romance and revenge on the lawless prairie.
Emily Blunt stars as Lady Cornelia Locke, an Englishwoman of some means who arrives in Kansas looking for vengeance when the violent chaos of the plains throws a massive wrench in her plans. Her fate seems to be intertwined with a Pawnee ex-calvary scout named Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer), who is on his own journey of bloody revenge and redemption. There's more going on — a whole lot more — but the primary drive of the story is Cornelia and Eli's fiery chemistry and their shared goals.

What right does the BBC have, making a lavish six-part western? The BBC – which is all about stuffy, bonneted period dramas and documentaries where a nonagenarian cavorts with chimpanzees – tackling the quintessence of American culture? And, to add to the impertinence, calling it The English? Well, that’s the situation we arrive at with Hugo Blick’s BBC Two drama (co-produced with Amazon), which arrives on our screen with a thunder of hooves.
Emily Blunt is Cornelia Locke, an Englishwoman whose father owns “half of Devon”. She’s journeying through the heart of America on an unarticulated voyage of revenge. It’s there that she encounters Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer), trussed up and beaten to a pulp. A Pawnee-born ex-us army officer, Whipp wants to claim a slide of American land, as is his veteran’s right. “Smoke dreams for the fireside,” dismisses a fellow soldier. Fate throws Eli and Cornelia together,...

There’s a great show hiding inside the convoluted plots otherwise obscuring “The English.” From writer and director Hugo Blick (“Black Earth Rising”), Amazon Prime Video’s new limited series taps Emily Blunt (also an executive producer) and Chaske Spencer to play Cornelia and Eli, an especially odd couple who forge an equally unlikely and unshakeable bond out in the dusty, unforgiving deserts of the American West. Together, these two characters and actors alike prove more than enough to drive the series forward — and yet, Blick continually throws more and more complications into the mix, packing the season’s six episodes with easily 10 hours worth of material.
From her first blazing scene to her melancholy last, Blunt brings her singular combination of warmth, wry humor, and flinty determination to the role of Cornelia, an English noblewoman hellbent on seeking revenge for her dead son. As conflicted Native American Eli, Spencer...

If many a Western captures the sweeping romance of America’s land rush — idealizing a time when seizing one’s future involved planting a literal flag — then “The English” serves as a bright red rebuttal; a revisionist take among the modern era’s various reconsiderations, this time emphasizing the tears, sweat, and oh-so-much-blood required to reach the dream awaiting colonizers somewhere west of the Mississippi.
Writer-director Hugo Blick (“The Honorable Woman”) still embraces traditional elements of the genre, centering his six-part Prime Video series around a rhapsodic love story and capturing plenty of vast prairies in picturesque, sun-kissed shots. But it’s the edge carved into every corner of “The English” that helps the limited series stand out. From the cutting dialogue to its jagged mystery, Blick’s latest story finds consistent success not by drawing pained parallels between past and present but by astutely acknowledging the ferocity ingrained in America’s identity all along.

As presented in Hugo Blick’s new Amazon limited series The English, the Old West was a dangerous place: a collection of breathtaking vistas connected by trauma from horrifying massacres, in which disease-ridden, testicle-eating outlaws sold their services to the highest bidder and the only currency more valuable than acreage was revenge. No place for a woman, but no place for a man either.
In short, The English is a revisionist Western, but the revision focuses on brutality in a way countless revisionist Westerns have done before — which may well be the series’ point. If Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood and their myriad imitators built a body of work tweaking the artificiality of the John Ford Western, Blick has built his series tweaking the artificiality of the revisionist Western. It’s all iconic and it’s all an artistic construct, The English seems to be saying,...

In the final days of 2014, my wife and I both came down with a nasty case of the flu. Unable to do much but alternately shiver and sweat in bed together, we attempted to distract ourselves with a miniseries I had heard good things about earlier in the year: The Honourable Woman. Written and directed by Hugo Blick, the thriller starred Maggie Gyllenhaal as an Anglo-Jewish businesswoman caught up in a web of intrigue that involved, among other things, a kidnapping, Israeli intelligence officers, and, I think, fiber optic cables?...

Emily Blunt knew as soon as she read the script for her new series The English that she’d star in it, but she also realized that she had to have more of a role in the Western than just on camera.
Blunt is also the executive producer of the new drama, which she debuted at MIPCOM on Sunday evening along with its creator, Hugo Blick, co-star Chaske Spencer and producer Greg Brenman.

Emily Blunt left her mark on Cannes, and not just with her acclaimed performances.

Chaske Spencer wants people to talk. The actor, a member of the Fort Peck Tribe, knows that his new Amazon Prime Video/BBC series, “The English,” will get people talking. Written and directed by award-winning Hugo Blick, the Western drama is led by Spencer and Emily Blunt, who portray Pawnee ex-cavalry scout Eli Whipp and Englishwoman Lady Cornelia Locke, respectively. They come together in 1890 mid-America as they search for the new town of Hoxem, Wyo. They only recognize their differences not knowing their pasts are woven together.
What drew you to this story and to Eli?
I was excited and intrigued by the character of Eli and the story. What drew me to him was his past and who he was and just the weight of that — the weight of someone in transition, because when we meet Eli, he’s off to go home. He wants to go back home.

The mere presence of Emily Blunt should be enough to pique your interest in "The English," but what if I told you that the beloved British actress will spend six episodes dressed as a gun-wielding aristocrat who is hellbent on getting revenge? If watching Blunt load a shotgun at the end of "A Quiet Place" gave you chills then this will send you over the edge: she may be wearing lots of fancy gowns, but they will absolutely end up splattered in blood because this co-production from BBC and Prime Video is a classic Western revenge drama.
In "The English," Blunt stars as aristocratic Englishwoman, Lady Cornelia Locke who crosses paths with Pawnee ex-cavalry scout, Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer) just in time to join forces on their respective hunts for vengeance and journey across the violent American landscape as a team. But seeking vengeance is just the tip of the iceberg for these two.

The first trailer for “The English,” a new western miniseries on Prime Video starring Emily Blunt, has been released.
Set in 1890, the series focuses on aristocratic Englishwoman Lady Cornelia Locke (Blunt), who journeys to the American West seeking revenge for the man she blames for the death of her son. While on her journey, she encounters a Pawnee ex-cavalry scout Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer), who is on a similar quest for revenge, and joins up with him to accomplish both of their goals.
Their quest ultimately takes them to the newly established town of Hoxem, Wyoming, where a series of unsolved murders has taken place, and ultimately causes them to discover a surprising connection with each other from their pasts. The trailer teases that the show will offer a mix of action, gore and drama, while also hinting at a romance between the two lead characters.

Premium documentaries, co-productions and the changing streamer landscape are set to dominate next week’s Mipcom Cannes as thousands of buyers descend on the Croisette after three years off, according to a wealth of senior sales bosses.
