In April, The New York Times reached out to OpenAI and Microsoft to explore a deal that’d resolve concerns around the use of its articles to train automated chatbots. The media organization, after the highly publicized releases of ChatGPT and BingChat, put the companies on notice that their tech infringed on copyrighted works. The terms of a resolution involved a licensing agreement and the institution of guardrails around generative artificial intelligence tools, though the talks reached no such truce.
With an impasse in negotiations, the Times on Wednesday became the first major media company to sue over novel copyright issues raised by the tech in a lawsuit that could have far-reaching implications on the news publishing industry. Potentially at stake: The financial viability of media in a landscape in which readers can bypass direct sources in favor of search results generated by AI tools. The suit may push OpenAI...

Thanks to the fine folks at The CW, we are able to enjoy this extended promo video for next week’s brand new episode of iZombie, which bears the clever title “Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind.” And, as we can see in the opening moments of the footage, they are not afraid to drop it like it’s hot.
After witnessing many major developments in last night’s episode, “The Whopper,” fans can expect to see Liv and Clive investigate the murder of an entrepreneur/barista next week. It seems the dearly departed was a “glass half full” type of gal and Liv will obviously temporarily inherit her perspective on life.
While I would not count on her to start adorning her work space with “Hang in there, baby” kitty posters (although you never know with this show), it is probably a solid bet that Rose McIver will continue...

The second season of iZombie continues to thrill audiences with the very wit, humor, intrigue, and sharply written characters that made the first season so dynamic, while still going in a bold new direction. Blaine is cured, Major is a reluctant gun for hire, and Liv, well, is still eating brains to help solve murder cases. The fact that Rose McIver gets to flex her acting muscles each week by taking on a new personality via her grey matter gorging means there is never a dull moment for this series.
On that note, we will next see Liv embody the traits of what has been called a “Real Housewife” in pop culture these days. The title of next Tuesday’s episode is, in fact, “Real Dead Housewife of Seattle,” so that one wasn’t likely too difficult to surmise. We have already seen her take on the traits of a...

Liv’s swiping of a piece of Lowell’s breakfast two weeks ago led to the unpleasant revelation that not only was Lowell getting his brains from Blaine, but that Blaine’s inventory was furnished with the missing teenagers from the skate park. Liv’s first attempt at killing Blaine, however, ended with Lowell’s death, as Liv found herself unable to take the shot. This week’s episode sees both Liv deal with Lowell’s death, and Major deal with Julien’s non-death, in a compelling episode that highlights what the series has done well so far.
Watching Liv’s grief over Lowell’s death is a touching aspect of the episode, and serves to highlight how much out of her depth Liv is.

The tortured trip of Hasbro’s Ouija through development has taken yet another turn, with studio backer Universal recruiting a pair of new writers for the planned movie. Styles White and Juliet Snowden are now in place to handle scripting and directing chores.Very little is known about how the concept of the spooky, spirit-contacting activity will become a fully-fledged thriller, but we do know that Paranormal Activity producer Jason Bloom is on board to oversee the script, so expect relatively low-budget chills.Ouija has been scary enough already without even reaching cinemas. Originally acquired by Universal, which commissioned drafts for a bigger-budget story from Tron Legacy’s Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, it lingered until Paramount swooped in and grabbed it as a potential vehicle for McG. But nothing happened again until Bloom got involved, which made Universal reconsider. The Platinum Dunes team of Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller is also involved.

The low-budget horror team behind the likes of Paranormal Activity are showing no signs of slowing down as they keep finding other concepts to plumb. Producer Jason Bloom has already hired director Scott Stewart to handle new supernatural tale Dark Skies based on his own script and the duo just tracked down their first cast member, with Keri Russell signing on.Plot details are being kept mostly under wraps, though apparently it involves an alien sneakily disguised as a human and a boy tagged as a target for abduction. Could Russell play his mother?Stewart, who kicked off his career as a digital effects artist and producer, will have to work to restore his credibility a little after the double disappointments of Legion and Priest. Perhaps his latest stab at horror will provide just that opportunity.Russell is better known for the likes of Felicity on TV and Mission: Impossible III...

With the found footage franchise machine humming along happily for him, Paranormal Activity producer Jason Bloom is looking for other ways to bring strange events to the screen. And he may just have struck a rich vein of source material, entering a deal to buy the rights to Fate magazine.Fate, which sounds much like a cross between the Fortean Times (whose founder is the subject of a film already in development) and the more lurid excesses of Bizarre, was first published in 1948. Quickly finding an enthusiastic audience, it blended first-person stories of the macabre with investigations and even some sceptical inquiries into various happenings.Blum is working with Picture Shack Entertainment duo George Plamondon and Betsy Schechter – who are experienced in all things spooky given that they oversee unscripted Us TV series Paranormal State – to turn articles from the mag into possible movies and goggle box shows. "Whether you believe or not,...

Vanity Fair has released its annual list of the 40 highest paid people in Hollywood, and as usual, it's full of surprises. For instance, if you guessed that Paranormal Activity 2 producers Oren Peli and Jason Bloom made more money in 2010 than Brian Grazer, Joel Silver, Angelina Jolie, Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, congratulations; you're right! The pair earned $26.2 million thanks to their horror franchise. The top-ten includes some random sightings as well -- yep, Todd Phillips did earn more than the three Twilight stars -- but the weirdest entry of all might belong to Steven Spielberg. Just how did the Academy Award-winning director make most of his money in 2010?...

- In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, speculation and innuendo reigned. Some of those theories made into the realm of the tome. Jess Walter’s satirical political tale The Zero won critical acclaim when it hit the bookshelves, and now Warner Independent has tapped German director Christian Alvart to bring the tale to the big screen. The tale focuses on Brian Remy, a New York City police officer who shoots himself in the head a week after 9/11 – though the book never specifically mentions the terrorist attack, and Walter’s deletion of a single word in the title gives new identity to his tale. Following the shooting Remy suffers strange bouts of memory loss, even forgetting the entire shooting incident. It is during one of these bouts that the Office of Liberty and Recovery recruit him to sift through the thousands of scraps of paper strewn across New York when the towers fell.

Winner of a Special Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival, "Viva Las Nowhere" is just funny and well-executed enough to rope in savvy audiences in the mood for a country music black comedy.
Highlighted by Daniel Stern's three-dimensional portrayal of the hapless lead and Patricia Richardson's dual role as twin sisters, the low-budget Franchise Pictures project is directed with economy and verve by Jason Bloom ("Bio-Dome").
With a comically on-target and abruptly mood-shifting screenplay by Richard Uhlig and Steve Seitz, "Viva" is set in the geographical center of the country, where Stern's would-be songwriter-singer Frank Jacobs owns a motel that has few customers.
When he helps a boozy and attractive singer (Lacey Kohl) after she has been dumped by her partner (James Caan) -- a sleazier veteran of the music scene -- Frank starts down a dark road that leads to several intentional and accidental fatalities, and many suspicious customers showing up at the motel.
Richardson ("Ulee's Gold") makes for a great de facto antagonist as Frank's viciously skeptical and jealous wife, and then later as that character's duplicitous twin. With a Willie Nelson-like mane and echoing some of his hard-hearted characters from the past, Caan is in top form.
But it's Stern who brings the movie to full life with an enthusiastic but unshow-offy performance.
